Dear students, parents and friends, Welcome to Week 4 of this term. We have another busy week and of course we have the mid-week public holiday for Bendigo Cup tomorrow. As you will see in today’s newsletter we have much happening at our school from dental clinics, secondary school transition visits and excursions to the Discovery & Science Centre. Please keep checking the calendar and the LED sign outside to keep in the loop.
Big Day Out – Grade 6 at Crusoe College. This afternoon our Grade 6 students participated in the‘Big Day Out’at Crusoe College. This is a great opportunity for our students who will be attending Crusoe College in Year 7 to familiarise themselves with their secondary school and meet many other students from cluster schools who also attended the afternoon activities. Morning Tea – Kanga Gotcha rewards. This morning both Mrs Martin and I enjoyed the wonderful company of a number of gorgeous students who were being acknowledged for consistently upholding the school values. They had reached their 50 or 100 Kanga Gotcha chart and accepted the invitation to have a morning tea celebration. Well done!
Teeth on Wheels This week we have the Teeth on Wheels clinic here Monday, Tuesday and Thursday who will be seeing students who have returned their dental forms. This is a wonderful
onsite dental van that supports students with their dental health and completes any dental work needed. Discovery & Science Centre – Escape Room Science challenge Our school has been provided with a wonderful opportunity to participate in a challenge at the Discovery and
Science Centre later this week. Grade 5 students will attend this Thursday morning and our Grade 6 students will
attend this Friday morning to test the challenge parameters. This excursion is free of charge and we are the only
state primary school invited to participate. This is thanks to our ongoing science relationship we have with the
Discovery & Science centre. Have fun kids and I hope you use all your teamwork skills to achieve the challenge.
Crusoe College Grade 4/5 Science Extension:
Each term we have the opportunity to send students to Crusoe College to attend an extension workshop with a particular curriculum focus. This Friday we are sending 12 students from Grade 4 & 5 to experience what science has to offer in secondary school. This will be the last extension workshop for the year and I wish to thank the Crusoe College staff who have engaged our students throughout the year in a variety of different learning experi-ences.
St Mary’s Parish Fair We have a number of absolutely beautiful volunteers from the St Mary’s Church who visit our school each week and support our Breakfast Club and our Hope Mentoring programs. This Saturday the St Mary’s Anglican Parish will have their annual fundraising fete in the grounds of their church. Given the support we receive from this com-munity I encourage any of our families who may have a little time on Saturday to pop in, visit the stalls and sup-port the day. Learning Walks Last week, members of our School Improvement Team plus students from our United Classrooms forum partici-pated in Learning Walks across the classrooms to observe what students do in a Numeracy lesson. The focus for the Learning Walks was ‘What does a Numeracy class look like and sound like at KFPS?’ It was noted that the students in each classroom were highly engaged and were using teamwork skills to discuss problems or to investi-gate an open ended question or task. I wish to thank our teaching staff for their willingness to open their class-rooms for observations and I also wish to thank the staff and students on the Learning Walk team who provided excellent feedback.

Student Safety & Wellbeing Concerns
Arrival times: Parents are asked to ensure their students do not arrive at school before 8:30am unless attending Breakfast Club on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays from 8:20am. Our students are encouraged to wait in the amphitheatre until 3.10pm if they are waiting for an older sibling from Crusoe. This will help eliminate the congestion near Crusoe. Children waiting for the bus are reminded to show respect to others and wait safely for the bus to arrive. We wish to thank our Crossing Supervisor, Peter, for keeping our students safe and for assisting any children who need help.

Student Safety
We have been informed of some safety concern regarding the speed in which cars are travelling around Freeman Drive. This is a very heavily used road where there are a lot of children and parents coming and going from school. These are safety concerns for our students, staff and our families, especially our younger siblings when cars are travelling at high speed. Students and families need to enter and exit the school via the school gates, and not use the staff carpark. We have three gates:
One near the gym in Freeman Drive
One near the school crossing in Olympic Parade
One at the back of the school Please do not use the front office as a walk way unless you need to speak to the office staff. Your co-operation is appreciated.
WRITING EXTENSION PROGRAM This week students have been working on how to plan a narrative using the story graph. We have spent lots of time talking about how to tighten the tension in our stories by making sure the problems are in the right order. This makes our reader worry about our main character and create the tension. Students have also been looking at how to add more backfill into their stories so readers understand who is in our story, where it is taking place and why the problems are happening. This week students used voting slips when they voted for the writer of the week. The provided a peer with some positive feedback about their story graph. This week’s Writers of the Week are: Gumnut Neighbourhood: Dempster M (room 5) Feedback from Peers:
I thought you planned for success by adding enough backfill. From Zach
I thought you planned for success because you listed all of your ideas quickly in short sentences on the story graph. Ms Picken
Grevillea Neighbourhood: Alyssa L (room 12) Feedback from Peers:
I thought you planned for success by using lots of detail. From Ava
I thought you planned for success by using your imagination and making it interesting to read. From Cooper
I thought you planned for success by using a twist in the story to tighten the tension. From Mitch
I thought you planned for success by using a really good sizzling start. You used the strategy of dialogue. From Nora
Well done to all students – keep up the creative work!
