14 th March 2019 From the Principal, DEVELOPMENT VICTORIA INFORMATION SESSIONS Over the last few weeks we have been hosting information sessions in our Theatre for the broader school community with regard to the development of the site adjacent to our school. Students and parents were all invited, as were the surrounding communities and any interested parties. Development Victoria provided planning for the proposed residences and large diagrams showing the placement of the many units to be built and how they will fit on the site. Students were able to experiment with the Virtual Reality Program they offered whilst their parents were able to ask the many and varied questions they had about the development. Even some interested buyers attended, hoping to find out exactly what the development would offer and whether or not it suited their specific housing needs The plenary we held this week with the Grade 5 students, GTAV and Development Victoria explained what Planners do and the considerations taken when planning Public Open Spaces. They spoke about how they prepare planning for shops, offices, schools and parks. One example used was the planning that went into the redevelopment of the playground area at Coomoora Reserve. This was particularly interesting as the children were very familiar with the area and the redevelopment is current – in fact it is happening right now. The inquiry challenge deals with the designing of the Public Open Space in the development next door. Students were put into teams of three and asked to design the best possible area to meet all of the needs of the potential housing community. At the conclusion of the challenge, the 9 best entries will be asked to present their proposals at the final plenary with VIP’s in attendance. The winning entry will receive their award from Cr Roz Blades, Mayor of the City of Greater Dandenong and go on to present their proposal in front of a filled auditorium at the annual GTAV seminar later in the year. It’s a wonderful program, filled with exciting opportunities for our students to engage and become more involved with the existing community around them and the planning for its future. Student Voice and Agency is one of the focuses of our school AIP and this program provides them with a brilliant opportunity to stand up and have a voice, make a difference and have their thoughts and ideas represented. DEVELOPMENT VICTORIA INFORMATION SESSIONS

Over the last few weeks we have been hosting information sessions in our Theatre for the broader school

community with regard to the development of the site adjacent to our school. Students and parents were all

invited, as were the surrounding communities and any interested parties. Development Victoria provided

planning for the proposed residences and large diagrams showing the placement of the many units to be

built and how they will fit on the site. Students were able to experiment with the Virtual Reality Program

they offered whilst their parents were able to ask the many and varied questions they had about the

development. Even some interested buyers attended, hoping to find out exactly what the development

would offer and whether or not it suited their specific housing needs

The plenary we held this week with the Grade 5 students, GTAV and Development Victoria explained what

Planners do and the considerations taken when planning Public Open Spaces. They spoke about how they

prepare planning for shops, offices, schools and parks. One example used was the planning that went into

the redevelopment of the playground area at Coomoora Reserve. This was particularly interesting as the

children were very familiar with the area and the redevelopment is current – in fact it is happening right

now.

The inquiry challenge deals with the designing of the Public Open Space in the development next door.

Students were put into teams of three and asked to design the best possible area to meet all of the needs of

the potential housing community. At the conclusion of the challenge, the 9 best entries will be asked to

present their proposals at the final plenary with VIP’s in attendance. The winning entry will receive their

award from Cr Roz Blades, Mayor of the City of Greater Dandenong and go on to present their proposal in

front of a filled auditorium at the annual GTAV seminar later in the year.

It’s a wonderful program, filled with exciting opportunities for our students to engage and become more

involved with the existing community around them and the planning for its future. Student Voice and

Agency is one of the focuses of our school AIP and this program provides them with a brilliant opportunity to

stand up and have a voice, make a difference and have their thoughts and ideas represented.

OUR STUDENTS AT PLAY

Lunch time provides our students with the opportunity to take a break from their studies, get some fresh air and exert a little of the energy they have been harnessing whilst applying themselves mentally to the challenges of learning. Students eat in the classrooms, to ensure that all students eat properly and to minimise the rubbish in the school grounds and then its outside to play – and play takes many different forms. Some of it is team based, some individual, some quiet and others creative. Students are free to choose their own activities and it is interesting to just watch and observe the choices they make.

INTRODUCING MR COUZENS Mr Couzens came to KPS at the start of the year and has been working as our new Physical Education teacher. He is great with our students and spends a lot of his own time teaching them the necessary skills to be competitive at sport. With the House Sports day fast approaching, he spends his lunchtimes out on the oval encouraging our students to always try their best and giving them valuable instruction. He is a very welcome addition to our teaching staff and we are very thankful for his selfless devotion to our students. If you happen to see him in the school yard, as always, give him a big KPS welcome.

SUSTAINABILITY

Mr Hierk and the students have harvested the corn in our vegetable garden and placed it into the freezer. Later in the year they will have lessons around the product and all of the different ways in which corn can be used. Right now, the pumpkins are growing beautifully. Some have already been harvested and have been placed in the storeroom to cure before they can be offered for sale to the school community, but there are still many growing on the vines. Sweet potatoes are almost ready too. What a wonderful garden we have and the produce is delicious. A big thanks to Mr Hierk for all of his hard work in this area and to the students who help and support him on a daily basis during their sustainability lessons.

It’s been a short week but a very productive one in the classrooms. Students are settled into the school routine now and concentrated learning is taking place on a daily basis. Our teachers are very committed to providing each and every student with the best possible opportunity to learn and to obtain the best possible outcomes for all. Have a great break over the weekend and we will see you all back at school on Monday ready for a full week of learning and instruction. There is no greater gift than a good education.
