Kerala State Bamboo Mission (KSBM) was constituted in 2003

under Department of Industries & Commerce and functioning at

Kerala Bureau of Industrial Promotion (KBIP). KSBM adopts a

focused approach to revitalize the bamboo sector by promoting

value addition, enhancing income generation and alleviating

poverty through the following interventions

• Creation of new design for innovative products in Bamboo sector

• Assess gaps in skill of artisans on location basis

• Prepare training module based on the need-assessment

• Quality enhancement and Product improvement on existing products through Engineering inputs

• Promotion of bamboo-based entrepreneurship by providing necessary support services

• Provide necessary support to create market demands

• Act as a support service provider to bridge the critical gaps in the sector

• Promotion of bamboo propagation

• Maintaining an information System about Bamboo.

Such an intervention-based approach is expected to create income generation opportunities at various levels, especially among women and improving the living standards of the artisans/craftsmen thereby contributing to the overall growth of the sector.

After formation of Kerala State Bamboo Mission, the Mission initiated several interventions to address the issues faced by the sector like skill development, training for the artisans, institutional linkages, trade fair participation, developing trainers, promoting propagation of bamboo etc.

Kerala Bamboo Fest is one of the major interventions undertaken by the Mission for the development of marketing in this sector. It

provides a platform for the beneficiaries to widen markets, acquire knowledge about product development and sharing information with each other. The first edition of ‘Kerala Bamboo Fest’ was organized in 2004. Since then, the Fest has been conducted every year, in the month of December. From the year 2007 onwards, artisans/craftsmen from outside the State (mainly from the North Eastern States) are also participating in Kerala Bamboo Fest.

The Fest gives an opportunity and a platform for artisans from the State to interact and share knowledge with the artisans from all over India. It helps them to move from traditional to modern and enable them to present their product in the competitive market.

Kerala State Bamboo Mission (KSBM) has established a Bamboo Innovation Centre (BIC) at the premises of Kerala State Bamboo Corporation (KSBC) at Angamaly, Ernakulam with the technical support of related Institutions. The aim of the Centre is dissemination of need-based knowledge and supporting services to the bamboo sector.

The Mission is also in the process of developing Supply Chain of Treated Bamboo to the beneficiary Groups through the Depots of Kerala Bamboo Corporation, that are already established across the State. It will help the beneficiaries to source the raw material readily at lower cost.

Kerala Bamboo Fest provides a platform to create awareness among the public about bamboo-based products and their applications. There is sizeable public interest in bamboo items and enquires from corporate are also being received at the Mission office.

Each edition of the Fest helps the Mission and the participants to learn and share information with each other, which leads to various interventions for development of the bamboo sector of the State.
