Facility maintenance Well maintained courts provide a better playing experience and help Clubs/P2P attract and retain members. If you have a number of courts to look after, then planning maintenance and resurfacing in line with your cash flow makes it important to have a club/P2P facility maintenance plan. Trevor May Contractors Limited can assist you by surveying all of your courts and preparing a budget cost for the maintenance, resurfacing and fencing works that you are likely to face over a period of ten or twenty years. This assessment will take into account the unique factors of your club/P2P location, access limitations, proximity to trees and how intensely your courts are used. If you would like assistance, contact Tim Freeman at Trevor May Contractors Limited, Tel 01233 740574 or email [email protected]

Incorporation

On 1 October 2011 the LTA became a limited company. Counties will become members of the new company and Registered Clubs/P2P will become Associates. This has required the County to take steps to ensure it complies with the new system and become a member of the LTA Ltd. Clubs/Registered P2P will also have to take similar steps to become associates. The County has appointed a Council member, Geoffrey Stephenson, to see through these changes on our behalf. Geoffrey will be happy to help any Clubs/P2P with questions they may have and can be contacted as follows:

Home phone: 0208 460 8809 Mobile: 07932683702 E-mail: [email protected]

Wimbledon online ballot system What is the online ballot system? · An online tool for running your ballot · Clubs will be notified when their allocations of tickets are live They can then run their ballot in one of two ways: Manually – this option allows clubs to run their ballots in the same way that

they have done in the past, drawing names out of a hat. The difference is that rather than giving physical tickets to members and taking payment from them, clubs allocate tickets online and winners pay the LTA direct over the phone or online Randomly – clubs can simply click a button to allow the system to randomly

allocate tickets and notify winners, who then go online to pay or make their purchase over the phone

Please click here for How To Videos on running a Manual or a Random Ballot and a comprehensive guide to the online system

The Olympic Games Countdown clock With the biggest sporting event hitting us this summer it is a fantastic opportunity for us all to sell and promote tennis to a new audience while everyone is gripped by the Olympic frenzy! As the Olympics is fast approaching, now is the time to start thinking about what your club/p2p could do to take advantage of this opportunity to promote itself and to help grow your membership. From Tuesday 17th – Monday 23rd July the Olympic torch will be travelling through various locations in Kent. Elena Baltacha, Britain’s Number 1 will carry the torch at St Peters in Broadstairs, Kent on 19th July. Speaking about her selection, Elena Baltacha said: "This is such an amazing honour that it's hard to put it into words. The Olympic Torch is a unique symbol, not just for athletes but for everybody who is part of London 2012.

Please click on the link to see which of the 40 chosen Kent locations are near you This will be followed by the Olympic tennis event itself at Wimbledon from Saturday 28th July to Sunday 5th August. What could your club do throughout this period to encourage this captive audience to pick up a racquet and give tennis a go? Some ideas could include: Offering free taster sessions linking to local schools and community groups Hosting Olympic themed social and tennis events

Offering some tennis activities as part of the local torch procession – contact your local authority to see what may be planned in your area:

Is your Club/P2P looking to the future?

Website – Is it acting as an effective shop window and generating those enquiries? Both your area on the LTA’s main website as a registered Club/P2P and your club/P2P’s own one. At the recent club forum Dan Stevens (Nebstone Ltd) gave some advice for an effective website (i.e. 80% marketing tool; 20% member resource, a photo says 1,000 words, make it easy to make an enquiry) – Perhaps you would like to discuss this through with Dan further – check out - http://www.nebstone.co.uk/ or contact him on E: [email protected] IT Management – Is your club official an administrator or a wealth creator? We had a presentation from Tony Beddoe from The Parklangley Club about how the IT Management System – Clubsys has enabled them to cut down time on the general admin duties (i.e. collecting subscriptions, court bookings, communication) and instead allowed them to use their time to grow and retain memberships, upgrade and expand their facilities and constantly revise and evolve their range of activities they offer. To see whether their system is right for your situation check out their website http://www.clubsys.co.uk/ for contact them on E: [email protected] Marketing – Are you promoting yourself in an effective manner? Mike Lynch from GBSport went through a range of areas which might be sensible for your club to consider (i.e. What would a potential members first impression of your club be? Do you give great customer service? Do you have a brand identity?). To view the marketing factsheet which Mike referred to at the recent club forum click here. To check out the overall range of activities that GBSport offers look at - http://www.gbsport.org.uk/ or contact them on E: [email protected] The 5 roles of a facility manager: Business Manager – Are you running your business like a business? Welcomer – Why should someone spend their leisure time and money with you? Entrepreneur – Are you moving with the times and taking calculated risks? Caretaker – How attractive is your shop window? Community Connector – Is your facility the hub for your local community? For the full article check out the Sports Marketing Network website

AEGON International Eastbourne, 16-23 June 2012

Eastbourne’s Devonshire Park Lawn Tennis Club will once again open its doors to the annual AEGON International this summer. The event provides some of the world’s top male and female tennis players with the opportunity to hone their skills ahead of the Wimbledon Championships and with the 2011 tournament featuring 13 of the world's top 20 female players, including Serena Williams, Petra Kvitova and Victoria Azarenka, you can be guaranteed an all-star playing field this year. It’s the fourth year in a row that a men’s ATP tournament has been incorporated into the week after being solely a WTA event. Russian Dmitri Tursunov made history in 2009 by becoming the winner of the inaugural men’s event, which has since been won by Andreas Seppi in 2011. On Saturday 16 June the LTA and lead partner AEGON are throwing the doors open to fans to watch the tennis for free, with seats on Centre Court and Court 1 being unreserved. This will be a great opportunity to bring all the family to watch some world-class tennis - simply collect free tickets from the onsite box office on the day. In addition to this, on Sunday 17 June four Legends of the game will return to the courts – keep checking www.aegoninternational.co.uk for more details and for updates on confirmed players at the event. To book tickets to the AEGON International call 0844 581 3015 or visit www.aegoninternational.co.uk
