Culture of ControlTeach boundaries in everything they do: roll/toss/throw and catch, hit balls, play points, athletic development.
Start with individual tasks/skills with quantitative goals.Progress to cooperative skills with quantitative goals.Teach them how to toss to each other, premium on
accuracy.Count out loud while performing tasks/skills (ind. or
coop.).When they compete, it is in a group, with cooperative
tasks first. Add peer pressure in a healthy environment. Don’t let
down your teammates or your partner.“Re-program” them to think control as it relates to

Types of Instructors
Volunteer youth – 8th graders up to first time instructors.
Adult volunteers – select carefully.
High School instructors – get paid after X amount of volunteer hours and pass grading test. Pay starts at minimum wage, moves up with time and performance. Can be Team Leaders.
Non certified adult instructors – local college kids as well as adult league players. Pay depends on amount of experience. Team Leaders
Certified pros - Team Leader and Head Clinician
Roles of InstructorsYouth volunteers - begin with Play Days, then clinics. Best
use: fill-in hitting/hand feeding for quantitative tasks or games. Minimize the amount of feedback/instruction they
provide. Adult volunteers - start with Play Days, then clinic. Best use:
fill-in hitting and hand feeding for skill development, quantitative tasks, as well as coaching during games. No
Athletic Development unless in their background. Paid HS instructors - depends on level/experience of
instructor and players. Best use: for 4-6 year olds, HS Jrs. and Srs can instruct and provide feedback. For 7-10’s, assist pro with skill development and run a game court.
Non-certified adults - Best use: running games and Athletic Development. Use for skill development according to
subject.Certified Pros - Best use: skill development and AD.
Student/Teacher RatioDepend on three things: age and level of kids, experience of
instructor, and subject area.For younger kids (6 and under) you need a smaller ratio.
Attention spans are smaller and kids are less skilled.As kids improve and can rally, the ratio can get bigger.
An experienced instructor can handle more kids.When working on skills, especially skill acquisition, you need
smaller numbers and a more experienced instructor.When playing games, numbers can be larger.
When doing athletic development, an experienced instructor can handle a larger group.
Ratios can be higher if proximity to players is larger (36’ vs 60’ court)
Remember, the more attention required, the smaller the ratio.
