Dear 4-H Families,

I’d like to welcome everyone to the start of another 4-H year! If you take a look at our yearly

calendar, there are many events and activities that will create great opportunities and pro-

vide excellent learning experiences for the members. As you look at the calendar, highlight

a few events that you’ve never done before, and give it a try!

As clubs begin to meet, this is an important time to begin scheduling project meetings for

the club, and this is where parents can contribute to the success of the club by volunteering

to lead a project group. Some of the most popular project groups include those subject areas

where we offer contests, including: Archery, Photography, Foods, Horticulture, Wildlife,

Clothing Judging, Woodworking, and animal related project groups such as Horse, Live-

stock and Dairy. There are many other projects too, for example Fishing or Public Presen-

tation. To see a list of project areas that offer project curriculum books, contact the office.

Project groups are the backbone of the 4-H program, and if you find yourself facilitating a

project group and don’t know where to start, please contact the office. Our team would be

excited to help you!

I can’t wait to see all the great work that is documented in 4-Her record books, which

should be submitted starting September 11th. You can find multiple formats on our web-

site, including a new “fillable” PDF. Recognition for record books will be given at the Kent

afternoon, and we are asking 4-H clubs and 4-H members to join us! The recognition that

takes place is a result of the very type of programs that help mold our youth into young out-

standing leaders.

Do you think 4-H is a little overwhelming? Consider attending the Leader Training on Sep-

tember 23rd. Additional information can be found in the newsletter.

I’d like to mention that National 4-H week is October 1-7th and to celebrate this week, clubs

are busing creating their masterpieces during the month. I’m looking forward to seeing the

ideas and creativity of our 4-H clubs as they display the litter barrels and window displays

in our community. The Paper Clover campaign will take place October 4-15, please be sure

to stop by your favorite Tractor Supply Store and purchase a clover to support your local 4-

H program. We do get those funds in our county, so every clover helps! If your club is inter-

ested in sharing about 4-H and hosting a display at the store, please contact the office, we

can provide a Kent County 4-H Display Board.

Sandy Reynolds, Project Leader, Pure Country 4-H Club

I would like to introduce our Kent County 4-H Families to a long-time

4-H Volunteer, Sandy Reynolds. Sandy has been involved with 4-H for

over 50 years, 28 years as a leader! When asked what the biggest dif-

ference between 4-H now and then, Sandy chuckled and said the clubs

were based on gender, girls clubs and boys clubs, and the 4-Hers

dressed up to go to their meetings. Sandy also mentioned that project

areas were also gender based, where girls participated in the foods and

clothing, and the boys did the woodworking, animal sciences for exam-

ple. Today, a lot of things have changed. Our clubs are all inclusive of

everyone, and there is a good mix of girls and boys in all of our project

areas. Currently, Sandy spends most of her time as project leader of a

foods project group (although she also serves as a project leader in

clothing, since she helps her grandchildren sew). The foods group, also

known as “Kent County Kookers” is open to all 4-Hers in Kent County.

If you are a member of another club, you can stay in that club AND still

participate in Sandy’s Food Group. They meet on Sunday’s, more regu-

larly during the first part of the 4-H year, up to the Favorite Foods con-

test (early March). Parents are asked to stay and assist with the inter-

active curriculum that Sandy provides, including some related food sci-

ence homework! Many participants use this project group to develop

new cooking skills that they utilize for the Favorite Foods contest, and

some learn important facts to help them with the Foods Judging Con-

test. At the end of each meeting, Miss. Sandy has the 4-Hers jot down

what they did and what skills they learned. When it’s time to complete record books, the Kent Coun-

ty Kookers are able to complete them in a snap. Sandy was the Kent County 4-H Outstanding Life-

time Volunteer, recognized in 2008 and was also the nominee for the national award that same year.

A huge thank you goes out to Sandy for her many hours she has dedicated to working with 4-H youth!

the weekend. Congratulations to Dylynn Cubbage our 2017 Cow Camp Champ who will be joining the plan-

Scribbles from: Susan Garey, Extension Educator, Animal Science

Delaware 4-H Horse of the Year- Deadline November 13, 2017

Have you ever wished that you could have a model of your own favorite horse or pony

to cherish forever? Here’s your chance!

Peter Stone of Stone Model Horses (www.stonehorses.com) has volunteered to create a

model horse to honor the great horse or pony selected as Delaware’s “4-H Horse of the

Year”. The winning 4-H member will be announced at the Horse Bowl contest and

awarded their horse/pony model horse at the winning member’s county achievement

banquet in fall of 2018.

Any currently enrolled traditional Delaware 4-H member (Cloverbuds are not eligible),

can nominate their beloved horse/pony by completing these steps:

1. Complete the Nomination Form 2018.

2. Provide Four (4) 4x6” full color photos of your horse/pony in natural light (not in the

barn): front, back, left side and right side. Attach to the provided page. These photos

will not be returned so make sure you have copies.

3. Add an essay of 500 to 1000 words written by the 4-H’er (age of 4-H’er will be con-

sidered in writing quality). The award will be chosen based on how well the 4-H mem-

ber can answer the following topic:

“I am thankful for a horse in my life because…”

a. Should be a horse or pony you have owned or worked with in some way.

b. Do NOT include your name or the horse/pony’s registered name in the essay.

c. Use the horse’s unregistered nick name in the essay.

d. Not required to own the horse or pony being nominated.

4. The nomination with the essay must be postmarked by November 13, 2017.

Nomination forms, the scoring rubric used by judges, and more details are available on

the state 4-H animal science webpage

collections or drives to benefit local causes will not be accepted as service hours unless you are providing the leadership to organize it or going above and beyond.

Here are some scenarios: If 4-Her mows your elderly neighbor’s lawn, or carries in groceries or shovels their snow, it counts. If they are paid by the neighbor, it doesn’t. If they mow your lawn, it does not count as that is just part of being a family and they benefit financially from that arrangement.

If they are a musician, time spent playing a benefit performance for a charity would count (as well as time to prepare and commute). Regular practice time does not count.

If they attend a 4-H meeting, it does not count. It does count if they are leading the meeting (which benefits other 4-Hers), teaching / demonstrating, organizing trips, buying supplies for other 4-Hers, spending a week as an unpaid counselor at camp, etc. In the case of a counselor, count the waking hours when they were responsible for other campers. The planning time for an event that benefits others is also appropriate to count.

Athletes do not count practice, games, or paid refereeing. Coaching a younger student, setting up conditioning practice for the team, volunteering to work a tournament, etc. would count. Mentoring or teaching younger youth would count as community service. Attending a clinic does not qualify, teaching at a clinic does.

Leading a Bible study or mentoring younger students counts, as does setting up or tearing down for an activity. Performing in a church program is not considered community service. Preparing a meal for another family in crisis would count.

Volunteer babysitting to assist a family in need counts. Watching their own younger siblings does not. Training for first aid or CPR counts; but not if it is required for a paid job.

Helping at voter registration or a polling place counts; but helping a candidate or a cause does not count

Fundraising is not acceptable to count as community service hours. If you are raising funds for your club to provide community service at a later date, count the time/service when you actually execute that activity. For example, if your club raises funds and the funds are spent on making tray favors for the nursing home at the holidays, you would count that time it took to make the favors and related activities. If your club uses the funds to go to the Pennsylvania Farm Show, you would not count that. Exchange fundraisers are not considered community service. Time selling raffle tickets is not considered community service.

Members assisting a disadvantaged person with a chore (cleaning out their garage, gardening, repairing their home, etc.) counts, but helping a family member or any able-bodied person with a chore does not count.

Community Service or Volunteer Service Hours are the compilation of time your student spends doing things for other people. If it counts for a school credit/grade, you cannot also count it as time spent volunteering, since you’ve been compensated. If your kids are paid for it, directly or indirectly, it does not count. Just participating in an extracurricular activity does not count. There is a difference between service and donations. General donations,

Acceptable examples of Community Service: Coastal Cleanup or Adopt-A-Highway Litter Barrel and Window Display, Trim-A-Tree (be accurate with your reporting here) Making food /Assembling Care Packages Haunted Hallways – not donating candy but attending the event Assisting at 4-H events (Holiday Fun Day, Fav Foods, Fashion Revue, DSF, Hall of Fame, State Teen Conf., Basket Auction, etc) Making / Delivering Tray Favors; Making centerpieces for a non-profit Making Hats/Scarves; Filling Holiday Stockings; Filling Shoeboxes Collections, Drives if you are the leader/organizer (donations themselves are not community serv) Assisted and/or Handed out ribbons at a livestock or horse show Yard work for someone who is unable to do it for themselves Assist as a junior leader at the Livestock Overnighter or serve on the Livestock Advisory Committee and regularly attend planning meetings. Training for first aid or CPR counts Members assisting a disadvantaged person with a chore (cleaning out their garage, gardening, repairing their home, etc.); helping at a local mission Volunteer time at a 4-H display booth, not collecting funds, lead a craft, talk to passer-bys, provide demonstrations, educating public. Must be engaging. Standing at a table is not considered service. Vacation bible camp volunteering counts Ringing the Salvation Army Bell Volunteer time to the following approved service organizations; Ruritan, Elks, Moose, Delaware Farm Bureau, Delaware State Grange, 4-H Foundation (not local club), FFA Foundation (not local chapter), Delaware Food Bank, Relay for Life, Special Olympics or your local Firehouse. Volunteering at Fifer’s IF you are educating or presenting some type of display. Offering a petting zoo for a non-profit event/organization or providing a nativity scene Helping at voter registration counts or a polling place counts Officer at any level (club, jr council etc): 10 hours of service per year A committee member: time in meetings, time spent shopping; time at event (Great Pumpkin Day, Holiday Fun Day, Favorite Foods etc.) Younger Member Weekend or Day Camp Counselor: Time at the event and time planning are appropriate to count Junior Project Leaders: Time spent teaching other 4-Hers is appropriate to count

Some activities that have been submitted in the past, that do not count as community service • Hosting a foreign exchange student or family; or Interstate Exchange• Helping a family member or any able-bodied person with a chore does not count; for example cleaning

stalls/volunteering at a local farm or helping to haunt the local attraction is not community service…• Garage sales – although you may help someone if they are holding a garage sale and all the proceeds are

going to charity• Adopt a Family at the holidays or gift buying for the holidays… these are great donations but not service.• Teaching Health Rocks or Up for the Challenge or any other program where youth are compensated• Running/Walking in a 5K or any other type of donation is not considered community service• Hosting breakfasts or dinners for the purpose of fundraising as well as working snack stands and food

booths, with the exception of the approved service organizations listed below

Michael Everline Memorial Leadership Award

A Leadership Award has been developed in memory of Michael Everline, a longstanding dedicated and devoted 4-H member and supporter. This will be an annual award to recognize a Kent County 4-H member for their leadership role in the Delaware 4-H program and in other outside groups and organizations. Several individuals who were fellow 4-H members and friends have developed this award to present in his memory.

Michael Everline was a very active member of the Harrington Sunshine 4-H Club. He always spoke highly of his 4-H activities, experiences and the training he received from 4-H. He was a competitor and a person who showed a great deal of creativity in anything he was involved with in his life. But, most importantly, he was a person who demonstrated outstanding and exceptional leadership skills in both 4-H and in other organizations outside of 4-H. He will always be remembered for his ability to develop, encourage and motivate any group he led. His leadership in the 4-H program will not be forgotten.

Please take the time to nominate a 4-H member who you feel has been an active leader in 4-H and other organizations and one who has demonstrated strong leadership skills in their daily life. Completed nomination forms should be returned to the 4-H Office by the required due date. If you have any questions regarding this award, please feel free to contact the office at 730-4000.
