Principal’s MessageDear Kendall Families,

September included many start up activities to welcome in another great year. Thank you for your attendance and support at Curriculum Night. Our staff appreciated your involvement, including your willingness to share thoughts, questions and concerns.

Kendall’s commitment to learning is supported by the Instructional Leadership Team made up of the following staff members: Mrs. Guerrieri, Principal, Mrs. Brown, Kindergarten, Mrs. Neely, 1st Grade, Mrs. Sharpe, 2nd Grade, Ms. Neufeld, 3rd Grade, Mrs. Dale, 4th Grade, Mrs. Prorok, 5th Grade, Mr. Popovich, Specials, Mrs. McDermott, Interventionist, Mrs. Olson, Student Services Coordinator, and Mrs. Gutmann, LMC Director. Our teacher leaders’ work with colleagues is driven by our School Improvement Plan for the purpose of improving instruction and student performance.

What does the Kendall Staff do on the Late Start Wednesdays?? The Kendall Staff has been productively using their professional development time on Wednesday mornings. Topics of learning and planning thus far include: fall reading assessment data review, reading intervention instruction and programming, formative assessment development, Stop, Walk and Talk Bullying prevention, and ISAT data analysis. Having this opportunity to engage in new and updated instructional methods and curricular initiatives translates to improved student achievement. Kendall Attendance Line

In February 2010 Kendall phone lines were converted to Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP). Our phones no longer work on landlines. The use of an auto-attendant allows you to pick from several options or press 0 at any time to speak to the office. The attendance line is accessed by dialing our main number, 630-428-7100 and pressing 3.

When Sending Money to School

When sending money to school please make sure it is in an envelope marked with your child’s name, class and what the money is for. Example: hot lunch, field trip, book order, chorus shirt, PTA enrichment, etc. Loose check and money can easily get lost.

Also, please make sure your child’s name is in the memo section and your updated address and phone number appear on the check.

Dear Kendall Families, As we settle into the 2010-2011 school year, we want to thank our wonderful volunteers for helping us get our PTA sponsored programs and activities up and running. A big thank you goes out to Kelly Reina and the many volunteers that helped make our Fall Festival a great success. The time put into planning a great event was evidenced by the smiles seen and laughter heard throughout the evening. Thanks for all of the hard work!

Another great program currently going on is our Fall Fundraiser. Funds raised through this effort are hugely important to what we are able to do as a PTA throughout the remainder of this school year. Funds raised (along with other fund raising efforts throughout the year) support wonderful activities for our children such as our classroom parties, fall festival, field trips, assemblies and much more! Finally, to all of our returning PTA members, thank you for your continued support. For those new to Kendall Elementary or those who have not yet joined, please consider becoming a member of our organization. Our goal is to enrich your child's educational experience at Kendall by sponsoring activities such as social events, educational enrichment programs and school presentations. PTA members will also receive our school directory as part of your membership privileges. Please contact Kimberly Karshen ([email protected]) if you would like a membership form. We hope that you are able to take part in the Kendall PTA weekend of holiday shopping at Learning Express of Naperville.

OOPS.... The initial volunteer sign up form that came out last month read "Mother/Daughter Activity" and "Father/Son Activity". It was the PTA's intention to rotate these activities each year and therefore, this was an error on our volunteer form. This year the Parent/Child activities will go back to "Father/Daughter Activity" and "Mother/Son Activity," Sorry for the confusion. We are still looking someone to chair the Father/Daughter activity. If you would like to volunteer, please contact your PTA presidents. Thank you!

Traffic Safety Reminders• Front car drop off and pick up is for carpooling with three (3) or more children. Side car is for anything

less than three.• Please note there are several restricted areas for parking on both Pradel Drive and Meadow Lake Drive.

The restricted areas are marked clearly with City of Naperville signs and are enforced by the Naperville Police Department. We ask you respect these areas and use our front and side car pick up lines provided.

• Staff begins their morning supervisory duties at 8:50 a.m. Please assist us in our duties by not dropping off your child before this time.

• Parking in the staff parking lot is unsafe for children. They cross lanes of moving traffic. Parents are asked to please use front or side car drop off/pick up lines provided for students.

• Review a rainy day dismissal plan at home with your child to avoid confusion at dismissal. Please call office NO LATER THAN 3:00 p.m. to make any necessary dismissal changes.

• We remind and practice with students to not walk close to the curbs in our pick up lines because of the moving vehicles. Please remind your child. We appreciate your assistance.

• Utilize the second “passing lane” to go around cars.• Please remain in your car during drop off/pick up. The staff is present to guide your child to your car.

We appreciate your assistance and cooperation.

Congratulations!

October is National Disability Awareness Month

How much do you know about Down’s Syndrome, Speech and Language Disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Bi-polar Disorder, Major Depression, Cerebral Palsy, Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis, Diabetes, Autism? How much does your child know? Most of our children have a child with at least one of those conditions in their classroom. Take a moment this month and ask your son or daughter who they know that has a special need. How are they the same as other kids in the class? In upcoming newsletters we will focus on a specific condition or category of conditions. Listed are some resources that will assist you in having a discussion with your child:

National Down Syndrome Society, (www.ndss.org)

American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, (www.asha.org)

National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (www.ninds.nih.gov)

National Alliance on Mental Illness, (www.nami.org)

United Cerebral Palsy, (www.ucp.org)

Arthritis Foundation, (www.arthritis.org)

American Diabetes Association, (www.diabetes.org)

Autism Society of America, (www.autism-society.org)

The Special Needs Liaison for the Kendall community works to ensure communication between our school and the special needs PTA. Our monthly newsletter will have Special Needs PTA updates as well as information about various issues and challenges our kids face. In addition to raising awareness, this helps us all to feel connected and knowledgeable about what our children are experiencing in their everyday school experience. If there are resources that would be helpful, ideas, or concerns that Kendall Elementary’s Liaison could address please contact, Michelle Ward, 630-922-5680, [email protected].

Vision & Hearing Screenings All students in the following grades will be scheduled for vision and/or hearing screenings this school year as mandated by the Illinois Department of Public Health. Kindergarten - Vision (mandate fulfilled by submission of State of Illinois Eye Examination Report) & HearingFirst Grade - Hearing onlySecond Grade - Vision & HearingThird Grade - Hearing only Those students in all grades receiving special education services, or students new to District 204, will also be screened for both vision and hearing. Please send all other requests for screenings in writing to the health office.

Storm Drain StencilingIn October, Cub Scouts from Den 10 will be stenciling the city’s storm sewer drains along Pradel Park, the school side of Meadow Lake Drive and Kendall school’s driveways. The program is sponsored by The Conservation Foundation and the City of Naperville Department of Public Works. According to the Illinois EPA, storm water run-off is now one of the leading causes of surface water pollution in Dupage County. The water from these storm drains is not treated and discharges directly into the river. The goal in stenciling the storm sewer inlets is to raise awareness and hopefully discourage dumping and prevent water pollution. Common pollutants are household, automobile, lawn and garden chemicals, pet wastes and street litter. Cub Scout participants are: Nate Cinnamon, Brayden Elliott, Chayton Gallaga, Michael Grawe, Joshua Kurtz, Blake Storoe and Cameron Sulzer.
