Keeping the Engine-Room Clean: CCS in China

A one-day stakeholder conference, October 11th 2010, Zep Pavilion, Shanghai Expo

China’s status as the engine-room of worldwide economic recovery is almost undisputed. And any engine-room needs fuel – in China’s case, oil and coal. If China is to sustain its extraordinary economic ascent during the decades ahead without irreparably damaging the environment then it is likely to have to employ carbon capture and storage technology on a massive scale.

A number of recent developments have drawn renewed attention to China’s potential role in CCS, among them:

• the oil industry’s interest from the perspective of enhanced oil recovery

• the government’s growing interest

• the possibility of CCS as part of the Clean Development Mechanism

• new demonstration projects such as NZEC.

As an illustration of our own conviction that China’s role in CCS cannot be underestimated, we intend to use this conference not just as a platform to discuss the next steps for CCS in China but to launch a major new research facility in the UK, the National Centre for Carbon Capture and Storage.

The National Centre for Carbon Capture and Storage is a pioneering joint venture that brings together the expertise and talents of two prestigious and highly respected UK institutions: the British Geological Survey and the University of Nottingham. It is a collaborative institution that aims to draw on all the talents that can help it become and remain a key global player in the field of CCS. In seeking future associations, it will look to academic institutions, industry partners and other organisations that share its belief that climate change is a phenomenon of both impacts and opportunities – and nowhere is this more apparent than in China.

Senior Chinese colleagues will be joining us at Keeping the Engine-Room Clean, which will offer excellent networking opportunities. Simultaneous translation will be provided during the conference.

The Shanghai Expo also provides an ideal platform for a prestigious and high-profile event, with the Zep Pavilion alone receiving more than 7,000 visitors a day and the Expo site as a whole some 450,000.

We are looking for companies to help sponsor Keeping the Engine-Room Clean: CCS in China and would be delighted to hear from you if you are interested in taking advantage of the many benefits we believe this conference will provide.

Kind regards,

Professor Mercedes Maroto-Valer, University of Nottingham

Dr Mike Stephenson, British Geological Survey
