Tips on Keeping Your Pool Water Clean

When you have a pool you want to keep the water as clean as you possibly can. In order to do this there are things that you must do on a weekly and bi-weekly basis. Following this schedule will help you keep your water crystal clear and sparkling throughout the entire swimming season. If it is an above ground pool and you are not going to be using for a few days you could always put the cover over it to keep out debris so there is less skimming to do but you should still do your cleaning on schedule.

• Add pool shock, which will disinfect the water along with breaking down organic matter. You can use either non-chlorinated or chlorine-based products but you need to remember to add whichever one you choose in the proper ratio to the total water volume of your pool. Just follow the instructions on the label or if you are still not sure how to do it consult with a pool maintenance provider to get the correct ratio. If there are excessively high temperatures or there has been a rainstorm you may need to add additional pool shock to the water.

Bi-weekly cleaning• Use a skimming tool to remove any insects, leaves, or any other items that are floating on the water’s surface. Although this is listed as bi-weekly some prefer to do it on a daily basis so they are not swimming with leaves and dead insects. • Use test strips for checking and maintaining the levels of pool chemicals in the water. The pH of the water should measure between seven point four and seven point six. If you are using chlorine it should measure between one to three parts per million. You need to make sure that this balance is correct because if it is too strong your swimwear could be bleached along with your eyes stinging. If it is too weak you will have uncontrolled bacteria and algae growth. If it is too high the best strategy is to wait a couple of days for the water to reach the recommended level or add more if it is too low.
