array of high class performances from the boys, both parents and staff were kept on the edge of their seats. After a long day of competing, it was Stuart who picked up the trophy for both the Rushmere and Priory Sports Days. Well done to Nathan (TWL), Barney (1H), Harry (2M), Rudyard (3MH), Marcus (LRB) and Guy (URP) who were awarded the Victor Ludorum trophies for most outstanding athletes of their year groups. In addition to this, a huge thank you to the staff who helped run the events, the parents for their support and of course the boys for their excellent participation on the day. Following the West Surrey Athletics that took place last week, we wish Leo (3M) and An-tonio (3OH) the best of luck for next Monday, as they represent the district of Surrey at the National Prep Schools Athletics Championship. Leo will be competing in the shot put, whilst Antonio will be competing in the long jump.

Oliver was outstanding in representing Great Britain A in the Team Tennis Trophy Event held at Queenswood School. Oliver secured fantastic wins in boys’ singles, boys’ doubles and mixed dou-bles against the best young talent in the world at U12 level, with teams from Belgium, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Great Britain B Team and France.

22 June

On 22 June, Kingsway hosted the annual King’s Champions Junior Shield. Twelve boys from U11-U13 represented the school brilliantly against both St. Paul’s and Dulwich College. Both the U11s and U12s won their age categories, with the U13s just missing out to St Paul’s. Overall the boys were narrowly pipped to the post by one rubber. It was a superb showcase of King’s Junior School talent yet again, supported brilliantly by many parents.

25 June

This day will certainly go down in KCJS history. Boys from U12 and U13 level managed to secure two famous Surrey League tennis victories beating Reed’s in a semi-final and final respectively. It is an outstanding achievement from all the boys involved across the term, a fabulous end to an excit-ing tennis term. What a win and fully deserved!!!!

Every year, House Debating shows the school at its best, with many remarkable speakers and this year was definitely no exception. House Debating 2019 seemed to challenge the idea of debating altogether, with motions being for ‘talking less and doing more’ and ‘climate change is the only issue worth de-bating at the moment’. Right from the start, the standard of speaking was so high from all teams, and this seemed to rub off on the audience too. The floor had so much enthu-siasm, and quick-witted responses to com-ments were flying around the hall!

We were very lucky to have Mrs. Diane Mills (Chairman of Wimbledon and Putney Com-mons Conservators) as this year’s adjudica-tor. Such a hard task as judging something so complicated and nuanced was handled ex-tremely well, as shown by the feedback she gave to the speakers.

This year’s House Debating gave both ex-perienced and new debaters the chance to shine. I can only congratulate such a high standard of debating but, in the end, Norman was decidedly the victor this year.

Josh (2M) followed his gold medal in last year's under 10 category at the JKA National Karate Champi-onships (which took place on Sat-urday 22 June), with 4th place in this year’s under 13 category. His technical score (for Kata) of 34.2 was just off the bronze medal score of 34.3 and, as the youngest finalist with 2 more years in this age cat-egory, he is hoping to impress the England junior team selectors.

We have had a really productive time in the garden this term. The regular team of faithful and happy workers have made a small pond, planted salad and radishes, tidied up weeds and made creative mini-beast habitats. This week Antoine enjoyed cutting his crop of rocket leaves. We are very grateful to the kind men who made us a new fence and gate. We love it!

Last Friday evening, a group of Up-per Removes gathered in anticipa-tion in Cotman Gallery, as their French exchange partners were ushered in. After initial greetings, we took our exchanges home for the weekend. Our families got up to all sorts of things, including go-ing on the London Eye, playing crazy golf, crossing Tower Bridge, boat rides on the Thames, and even going on a 200-metre tunnel slide! At home, the French boys tasted traditional English food and English drinks (tea!) and all the boys went to bed with full tum-mies every night! Although it was tiring, everyone had a great time and the exchanges departed on Monday morning in good spirits! Thank you to all the French teach-ers for organising such a fabulous exchange. On Wednesday this week all the boys were fortunate to hear from Mr Tony Hoskins who is a pilot and engineer. He earns a living rebuilding classic planes and is currently working on a very special Spitfire. This was one of the planes in the Photo Reconnaissance Unit which was responsible for finding the German battleship Tirpitz during the Second World War The Tirpitz was eventually sunk by the RAF in November 1944. It was shot down over Norway in March 1942 but its pilot, Sandy Gunn, parachuted to safety. He was imprisoned by the Germans but took part in the Great Escape from Stalag Luft III. One of the others who escaped with him was Des Plunkett. Both men were recaptured and Sandy was amongst the group executed on Hitler’s orders. He was just twenty-four years old. Des survived the war and did not pass away until 2001. Des is especially interesting because he is a King’s old boy and would have sat many times in the Great Hall, just as our boys did when they listened to Tony Hoskins. We are celebrating this year the seventy-fifth anniversary of the Great Escape and Tony has written a book about Sandy Gunn’s life, Sandy’s Spitfire. He is shown here holding an aileron from Sandy’s Spit-fire. The other items on display are the cameras with which PRU planes were fitted. Tony recovered the plane recently from Norway and hopes, once he has completed the rebuilding project, to take it into the air once more. His talk was fascinating and there were many questions from the boys.

I would like to thank all the Third Form boys who learnt their capital cities and countries over the Easter holidays. A particular mention must go to Bryn, Veer, Alex, James, George and Scott who got all 193 countries and capitals correct and to Daniel who got 191. The boys and their parents have man-aged to raise £3500 which will go to Colegio Asvin, outside Cuzco in Peru. ¡Felicitaciones y muchísi-mas gracias!

news FrOm the music schOOLOn Monday evening the Ensemble Con-cert took place. The concert featured some of our smaller ensembles, includ-ing string quartets and wind trios. Cho-rale, our selective Rushmere Choir, also performed and for many of these boys this was their first “big” concert. We look forward to our Summer Concert on Monday featuring our larger groups and choirs. Please remember to pur-chase tickets in advance.

On another note, Ivan (UR) travelled to Italy to participate in the City of Pa-dova International Music festival. Ivan came first in his age category achiev-ing a score of 98/100. Congratulations Ivan! Arvin (3M) took part in the Wim-bledon International Piano Competi-tion last weekend and won the Silver prize (Own Choice under 12 category).
