ADA KOCHart auctioN chairPersoNThank YOU for supporting the 2018 KC Artists Coalition Auction – the only large, annual fundraiser for this vital organization.Forty-two years ago, artists founded KCAC based on an important NEED for artists to work together, play together, and have a voice in the community.Today, the membership of KCAC has grown to over 400, because artists recognize the NEED to stay educated on the ever changing business of art, to participate in the local visual artists community, and to contribute to contemporary culture, art and ideas. More than ever, the future of the KC Arts Community will NEED the KCAC to continue to host exhibitions that explore the diversity of expression that shapes our cultural future, to provide a space for innovative and experimental art, which does not readily lend itself to commercial venues, and to aggressively support and embrace local and regional artists and their work. As one artist who has been a proud member of KCAC for many years, I have benefitted from the programs, the opportunities to show work, chances to see work from local students or internationally famous artists, and from friendships
and mentoring with other artists I have met in these galleries. I, like over 250 other artists, am happy to donate work for this event to help this worthwhile organization continue to thrive and prosper. Thank you to our Honorary Chairperson, Jan Schall, for support at KCAC events over the years and for her contributions to the Kansas City community with her work at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Her knowledge, enthusiasm, and generosity have inspired many towards excellence in learning about art and in art careers. Thank you to our featured artist, Tom Corbin, who has generously donated a magnificent bronze sculpture “Female Walking” to the auction. Tom’s career path has been unusual, yet very successful, and throughout his years in KC, he has continued to be a loyal, energetic supporter of KCAC. Thank you to our phenomenal leaders and staff! The KCAC Board Members are very important for forging a path for KCAC, spreading the word about the mission, and establishing relationships throughout the community. Our staff, Janet Simpson, Executive Director, Marissa Starke, Assistant Director and Erin Hall, Executive Assistant continue to amaze us with updating past events and always adding new programs and ideas to keep pace with a constantly changing art environment. Finally and importantly, THANK YOU TO YOU, our volunteers, our supporters, our guests for engaging with KCAC at this auction, making it possible, making it successful, making it fun! We NEED you!
Tom Corbin is an internationally collected bronze sculptor, known for his elongated female figures and cast bronze furniture. The donated edition of Female Walking is one of Tom's signature pieces, also one of his favorites. The figure exudes confidence and embodies qualities of the true feminine spirit. Her powerful stride, raised chin, with shoulders back produce this "woman with a mission".
Tom’s work appears in 22 showrooms and galleries internationally. Private collections include Nicole Kidman, Jack Nicholson, Ellen DeGeneres, Alec Baldwin and Sofia Vergara (among others). Public installation sites include the United Nations, the Kauffman Foundation, the Firefighter’s Memorial, the Children’s Fountain, University of Oregon, Florida State University and the Kemper Museum. In addition to important public and private collections, his work has found its way onto the sets of some major motion pictures, among them True Lies, A Perfect Murder, It’s Complicated and Transformers.

Fellow Friends of Art – It is no secret that the arts play a dynamic role in the life of Kansas City and our wider metropolitan area by greatly enriching the emotional, intellectual, and economic health of the community. Our city is blessed with great theater, dance, music, literary, and visual arts. The energy and commitment of Kansas City artists, together with support from organizations like ArtsKC, have made possible the individual and group achievements that that enliven our community.Since its founding in 1975, the Kansas City Artist Coalition (KCAC) has fostered solidarity among artists, advanced shared goals in the community, and contributed to the enhanced visibility of the visual arts in Kansas City and beyond. Today, Kansas City is an acknowledged leader in the arts, the result of more than forty years of passionate dedication by those in this room and by those who came before. The Coalition is now more than 400 members strong. Countless exhibitions of paintings, drawings, photographs, sculpture, and ceramics have enlivened the River Market gallery space in which we gather tonight. Lectures, workshops, and community events have also found a place here. While the Kansas City Artists Coalition is “home” to area artists, its arms reach beyond our city and beyond the United States to engage the international community. Recently, the KCAC gallery hosted an exhibition of Swiss Artist Nina Staehli’s multi-media project, “Gloryland”—an exploration of the place of American Indians and the impact of the Trail of Tears in contemporary society.Tonight, we celebrate the strength of the Kansas City Artists Coalition, its individual members, and the works of art on view in this gallery. — Jan Schall, Sanders Sosland Curator, Modern Art; The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art2018 Auction Honorary Chair
