In the past we have taught using AusVELS. Consequently, there will be a slight change to the reports that your child will receive at the end of this term. The report will still provide the usual information such as what your child has achieved in English, Mathematics and general comments regarding areas for improvement as well as a student comment. There will also be a grade such as needs attention, acceptable, good, very good and excellent for the work habits of effort, behaviour, home reading and homework. All this is very similar to the report you received at the end of last year. The minor change will occur in the area where the dots (progression points) are placed. The coloured circle will be in the normal place and there will still be a yellow shaded area which is the expected level of achievemnent at your child’s year level. However, we will not have the white circle and the dots displaying your child’s progress as we have not used the Victorian curriculum in previous reports. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we make this transition into reporting using the new Victorian curriculum. School Reports

This year Katunga Primary School has changed over to teaching using the Victorian Curriculum. In the past we have

taught using AusVELS. Consequently, there will be a slight change to the reports that your child will receive at the end

of this term.

The report will still provide the usual information such as what your child has achieved in English, Mathematics and

general comments regarding areas for improvement as well as a student comment. There will also be a grade such as

needs attention, acceptable, good, very good and excellent for the work habits of effort, behaviour, home reading and

homework. All this is very similar to the report you received at the end of last year.

The minor change will occur in the area where the dots (progression points) are placed. The coloured circle will be in

the normal place and there will still be a yellow shaded area which is the expected level of achievemnent at your child’s

year level. However, we will not have the white circle and the dots displaying your child’s progress as we have not used

the Victorian curriculum in previous reports.

Thank you for your understanding and patience as we make this transition into reporting using the new Victorian

curriculum.

School Review Parent Survey

Thank you to those of you who have taken the time and effort to fill out and return the survey. Your input and ideas have been taken on board and will be used during our school review when we focus on what we are doing now and what we need to do in the future to remain a successful entity in this community.

World Of Maths Roadshow – Thursday, May 26th

Numeracy is a compulsory component of our curriculum, and to make numeracy fun and relevant to our students, we have arranged for the World of Maths Roadshow to visit our school. The World of Maths Roadshow is an ideal opportunity for students to see how maths is applied to some real life situations. More importantly, students will be engaged in hands-on activities that will cater for all ability levels and probe their problem solving skills. It is a highly engaging session which will show the children that Maths can be fun! For more information visit our website www.vicworldofmaths.com

This incursion will occur this Thursday. The Prep – Grade 3 students will work from 9.10am – 10.20am and the Grade 4

– Grade 6 students will work from 11.30am – 1.00pm.

Matilda Excursion

As you already know the whole school will be taking off to Melbourne on Wednesday the 22nd of June. At the moment

we are in the process of organising the itinerary but what we do know is that we will depart school at 7.30am sharp and

the show commences at 1.00pm. Therefore we will have time to stop for morning tea and lunch before we watch the

show. The show runs for roughly three hours so we will also be stopping on the way home for afternoon tea as well.

Jump Rope For Heart

Congratulations to everyone who supported our Jump Off day last week and for raising money through organising sponsors for the day. Your hard work and effort raised a little over $1,000 of which the school can keep $500 to use to purchase much needed resources and equipment.

Thank you to Miss Hickey for organising this again this year. She has put in endless hours organising the event as well as tallying up the sponsorship money. Miss Hickey also organised prizes for the two highest money raisers. They were:

The Newbery Family and Havanah Gardner. Congratulations!! We hope you enjoy your prizes.

New Website

In some very exciting news we have been working hard all year with a website developer to update our website. The

site is more user friendly than the past one. Please have a look and let us know what you think. The address is:

http://www.katungaps.vic.edu.au

What we have found is that it works much better using Google Chrome rather than Internet Explorer. The old versions

of Internet Explorer do not support the site so if you are using old versions you may need to update them.

Division Athletics

This Friday the Division Athletics will be held in Shepparton. We will hand out nametags for the students

participating tomorrow along with an itinerary. Can they please wear their school polo and place their

respective nametags on this whilst participating on Friday. Good luck to everyone participating. Most

importantly, have fun!!

Head Lice – Please note we are still getting reported cases of this

We have continued to conduct random head lice checks over the past few weeks and unfortunately have had to send some students home due to the detection of lice. Do not take this personally but if your child/children have been sent home can you please thoroughly treat them and then continue to make follow up checks for eggs over a seven to ten day period. It must be noted that one head lice can lay hundreds of eggs.

Reconciliation Day at Numurkah Secondary College

On this day we will be having an out of uniform day to assist with the running of the event. Can you please bring a gold coin donation.

Permission slips are attached to this newsletter. Can you please fill these out and return to school by Monday, May 30th. Please remember that this day is a compulsory day of attendance for the whole school.

National Reconciliation Week 2016 OUR HISTORY, OUR STORY, OUR FUTURE

Each year National Reconciliation Week (NRW) celebrates and builds on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians.

Numurkah Secondary College, Numurkah Primary School, Katunga Primary School and Strathmerton Primary School are very excited to be taking part in a combined NRW Celebration Day, which will be held on Tuesday May 31st. Our teachers and students will have the opportunity to learn about the culture and experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and to think about the importance of reconciliation for all Australians.

We are very fortunate to have an amazing array of activities to enjoy on the day, including traditional and contemporary dance, traditional aboriginal sporting games, story-telling, weaving, traditional and contemporary music, painting, bush tucker and artefact presentations. In the lead up to NRW Celebration Day, students will also learn more about significant historical events such as the 1967 Referendum, The Stolen Generations and Mabo.

VCOP Big Write

Next Monday we will send home another Big Talk homework sheet. Please be on the lookout for this. Once you receive the sheet just have a quick chat with your child that night about the topic.

If they can’t say it, they can’t write it. Winter Interschool Sports Program

Last Friday we played St Francis, Nathalia at home. Luckily for the girls St Francis fielded two teams therefore we were able to give the younger girls a go in a non-competitive environment. The main team had a brilliant win 13 to 9 with Aida Hickey and Bethany Hibma being named best. Over at the football ground we came up against a very well drilled St Francis line up. We kicked two goals to their ten goals. Mr Walsh named Jhesse Foote and Viv Russo in the best players.

Parents Club – Family Pie Drive

The Parents Club have organised a family pie drive through Brereton’s Bakery in Nathalia. Order forms

were sent home with last week’s newsletter and need to be returned to school by tomorrow, Thursday,

26th May. The pies will be available to pick up at school on Thursday, 9th June. If you require another order form please

do not hesitate to contact the school office.

School Uniforms

Winter clothing - With the cooler weather upon us students need to dress accordingly. Whilst it is warm inside during class time students need to ensure they are adequately dressed for outside play. Children spend their breaks inside if it is raining but not when it is only cold.

Lost Property - We have an abundance of lost property at the moment, predominantly school jumpers with no names

on them. If your child has lost a jumper please take the time to check through the lost property basket to see if

anything there belongs to you. It is important that school jumpers have names on them so that when they are found

they can be returned to their rightful owner.

Uniform order - With the cooler weather approaching families may like to top up their uniform supplies. Please

complete the attached order form and return to school by Wednesday the 1st June. We will continue to hold a limited

supply of uniforms but would appreciate if families take this opportunity to have a look at their supplies and order

where needed.

Sports Dress Up Day/Hot Dog Day

Yesterday we had a very busy day at school. We held a sports dress up day where the students dressed up in a variety

of sporting colours. In conjunction with this the school captains ran a tabloid sports in the middle session. Their

leadership and organisation on the day was tremendous. We also held a hot dog lunch. Thank you to the parents who

cooked these tasty treats. It is very much appreciated.

Interleague Football

Last Saturday Picola League had a game of Under 12 football where the North West division faced off against the South

East division. Bailey Smith, Dylan Baker and Cameron Harding represented the South East and all played well.

Congratulations boys, it is an outstanding achievement to make Inter League.

School Banking

Don’t forget that Monday is School Banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can then be redeemed for a range of great, exclusive reward items in recognition of their continued savings. Refer to your rewards card for items you can redeem for Term 2, place your name and tear off the chosen reward and return to the school office for ordering.
