Nat’s News!

Thanks to everyone who came on Sunday and contributed to a fantastic event. We have had some excellent feedback

about the building and the students have certainly enjoyed using it this week.

A big applause to Bec, Kelly and the Parent’s group for organising and setting up the sausage sizzle. I also want to

acknowledge Justin, Stacey, Andrea and June who were able to come and assist with activities on the day. Much

appreciated!

We will be having a pupil free day on Thursday 18th July. The staff will be taking part in Writers Workshop in service with

guest presenter Danny Hyndmann. Some staff from other local schools will also be joining us on the day and the

Parent’s Club will be doing the catering.

Following some consultation with staff and School Council, I have made an adjustment to the procedures for the

Interschool Winter Sport program. All Year 5/6 students will now go with the footy/netball team regardless if they are

playing or not. We will be encouraging non players to either score/cheer etc. Year 4 students will only go if there are not

enough players for the teams. Due to the large number needed for a footy team this is highly possible. Please contact

me if you require further clarification about this.

A reminder that the last day of Term will be a Pyjama/teddy bear day. Students can come to school in their pj’s and stay

in them all day. No need to put school uniform underneath. School will finish at 2.15 on this day. We are also going to

have free sausages available at lunch time for any students who would like a sausage or two for lunch.

Next week we have two incursions happening. The first is on Monday and involves a visit from ‘Scien-tastic’ at 9.30am

and then on Tuesday the Responsible Pet Education will be visiting the school.

On Sunday I gave out some colouring competitions to the children starting school next year. One entry has already been

received and the closing date for this is the last day of Term 2. If you didn’t get an entry and would like one please

contact the school.

At the Junior Council meeting yesterday I asked the students to think about how we could make a poster explaining the

Child Safe Standards in kid friendly language. Kealey, Hannah and Gemma have been working on putting these ideas

into poster format and I look forward to sharing the finished product with the school community next week.

This week we have had Ella Dennis doing work experience, mainly with the 5/6 class. Ella is also my niece and has

chosen to come and spend some time at Katunga from her High School in Melbourne.

Have a great week,

Nat

Parents’ Club

Thank you to all who supported our Pie Drive. All orders will be available for pick up on Thursday the

20th of June at 3.00 pm. Please supply your own bags for pick up.

Coming up we are organising a Movie Night, please see the attached flyer for more information.

Lions Club Public Speaking

Currently the Grade 3 to Grade 6 students have been working on their public speaking speeches.

Our in school competition will be held this week. We will then announce two winners from the

Grade 3-4 competition and two winners from the Grade 5-6 competition. These four students will

then head to Strathmerton, on Thursday the 25th of July, to compete against students from

Strathmerton Primary School. This competition will be held in the Golf Club/Lions club hall at the recreation reserve.

Excursion to Her Majesty’s Theatre Melbourne – Wednesday, 11th September

This year we are very excited to announce that we are going on an excursion to Melbourne on Wednesday 11th

September, to Her Majesty’s Theatre to see ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’.

Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory features direction by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien, music

by Grammy, Emmy and Tony Award winner Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Grammy and Tony Award winners Scott Wittman

and Marc Shaiman, a book by Artistic Director of Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum theatre David Greig, choreography by Tony

Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Joshua Bergasse, and includes additional songs by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony

Newley from the 1971 Warner Bros motion picture. Scenic and costume design is by five-time Tony Award nominee

Mark Thompson, lighting design by four-time Tony Award nominee Japhy Weideman, sound design by Andrew Keister,

projection design by Jeff Sugg, puppet and illusion design by Obie and Drama Desk Award winner Basil Twist, and music

supervision by Nicholas Skilbeck.

The cost of the tickets are $100. We wish to take the whole school to the performance and understand that this may be

costly to families, therefore we have subsidised the cost of the day to $50.00 per student to enable all students to

attend.

In order to plan for the event and to secure your child/children’s ticket we ask that you pay $20 to the school by Friday

the 28th of June, and then the remaining $30 before the event. Please complete and return the attached reply slip with

student details and payment. Parents are most welcome to attend and will need to contact Cardwell’s Coaches to book

and pay for your ticket. We will have some spare seats on the bus for parents (this may vary according to student

numbers) otherwise you will have to make your own transport arrangements.

The show commences at 1.00 pm. More information regarding departure times will be relayed closer to the event. If

you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact Natalie or Andrea.

Anxiety in Children

Everyone suffers from anxiety at some point in their lives. It is when this anxiety starts impacting on the way we live,

refuses to go away and seems to happen for no apparent reason that it becomes a problem. People are becoming more

aware of anxiety as a real mental disorder.

Some signs your child might be suffering from anxiety:

- Sleep problems

- Concentration problems

- Panic, tantrums, screaming, tearfulness

- Change in performance

- Clinging/difficulty separating from parent or teacher

- Avoidance or withdrawal from activities

Avoidance is a common strategy for children to use especially when their ‘tool box’ is empty of any other strategy to

help and unconsciously we adults can be reinforcing this strategy through a “negative reinforcement loop”.

Check out the newsletter next week for some tools to teach any child to help deal with anxious feelings.
