I do what I do because I feel the need to impact an audience as much as I have been impacted by powerful and inspirational creators. Film and Television has always been an outlet for me, making me feel as though I am not alone in how I feel and that it’s okay to strive unapologetically to be the best version of myself that I can achieve. If I can impact just one person through creating something I am passionate about honestly love, then I will feel accomplished. I need to create, whether it is to express myself when I can’t put down my feelings into words, or to help someone else to create their own vision. It’s my passion. Why do I do it? Because to say that I am infatuated with film and television would genuinely be an understatement, it honestly consumes every aspect of my life and I absolutely love it.

Pathway Film and Television

Project Title ‘Perfection’

Section 1: Rationale (approx. 150 words)My project is an experimental, documentary style film discussing societies fixed definition of what it means to be ‘perfect’. The overall area of concern of my short film is the outdated views surrounding the word ‘perfect’, and how the meaning of this word is changing dramatically. To show this: I will use footage from catwalks, articles from magazines, adverts on the street and combine it with my own footage.

I will capture the interest of my audience because the subject matter is so relevant today. It is so hard to accept yourself for who you are due to everything you see plastered on social media but this is all fabricated, highly edited and planned.

Throughout my diploma, I have been taught a range of technical skill and have put them into practice by creating a variety of different short films and scenes of different genres and themes. This will help me greatly throughout this project.

Section 2: Project Concept (approx. 200 words)My main media format is video. I want to use found footage mixed with my own to convey the overall aim of my project. To specify, I will create an informative piece that will make my target audience feel as though they don’t have to change themselves to replicate exactly what they see in the media.

My influences for this project are my peers. I see so many of my friends getting upset because they don’t look a certain way, and I feel like making this short film could help them in some way. I am also inspired by Director Michael Apted for his ‘Up’ series.

I will research short films that think about society’s definition of perfection and use a variety of media products to research the history of perfection. I also want to experiment further with editing and sound. My target audience will be, predominantly women, between the ages of 15 and 25. This is the age where most women get into social media, and understand society’s expectations of women. It could also interest any person who is fascinated by society’s idea of being ‘perfect’. My roles within this project will include: Director, Producer, Script Writer, Cameraman, Editor and Narrator.

My Projects technical requirements will be mainly surrounding editing on Avid and creating crisp and clear voiceover.Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 150 words) I will be recording my decision making in a vast variety of different ways. For example I will make sure to document my progress throughout each week within my progress tracker. Also, after each task, I will be completing peer reviews to get a detailed insight from my peers as to how I did within each part of the project. I will also make sure to complete a detailed production diary throughout the production of my project. This is going to help me when looking back and evaluating my work. I will also make sure to document any changes to my initial intended idea within each chapter of my work in my progress tracker and production diary. After completing and uploading my project to my chosen platform, I will be critically evaluating my finished media project against the agreed requirements and parameters. This will help me to get the most out of the project as I possibly can.

CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Figure 2- Perfection quote - (angelica, 2018)

This project portfolio is a detailed report of my Extended project for my second-year UAL Extended

Diploma in Film and TV pathway. I am beyond excited to delve into this journey of creation. To

summarise, my project is going to be a short film based around the word ‘perfection’. I am going to

be focusing on societies linear, fixed definition of the word perfection and talk about this in detail.

Using both found footage and my own, I hope to inform and inspire my audience, making them

realise that they don’t have to change themselves to fit into the small box that society deems to be

perfect.

Throughout chapter one of my portfolio, I will begin by talking about the background of my project.

This will include firstly discussing what it is that makes me want to actually complete my project.

Through this I will be discussing ‘who I am’ and my previous skills gained throughout the course. I

hope that taking a deeper look into who I am will help me to understand not only myself better, but

my motivation to complete this project. I will detail my idea for the project, my role in the project

and how it relates to my future career. After going over the basic premise of my project I will be able

to explain what I seek to achieve and how my project relates to my target audience. I will finally

conclude chapter one by completing my research plan.

Overall, I hope that this chapter will help me to solidify my idea further, as well as enable me to reflect upon how I developed this idea and why.

The Background of my Project

Figure 3 - And so the adventure begins quote - (pinterest, 2018)

There are a variety of different factors that were at work that might have influence the conceptualisation and execution of my project. Throughout this section I hope to discuss these factors, and gain a greater knowledge into what it is that makes me do my project.

‘What is it that makes me do my project’ is such a broad question, and one in which I intend to break down. I think that to understand fully why I may have began to develop this idea, I must firstly look at ‘who I am’ and ‘who I was.’ I will also look back upon the skills that I have gained throughout my diploma so far, and how this has affected me. My past experiences and an array of other factors will have shaped my mindset and opinions.

14

Who am I? Who am I? This is one of the most important questions, not only in this course but of all time. Who I am moulds and shapes my opinions and views, as well as my likes and dislikes and the very core of my personality. This will, of course, effect the media that I consume and what I choose to create. Throughout this chapter I will be discussing the ‘me’ that I know at this time, as well as looking back and reflecting upon the ‘me’ at the beginning of this course.

Who WAS I?

At the beginning of the course last year I made a mood board to represent and show exactly who I felt like I was at that time. I then discussed why I had chosen these images. Last year, this is who I was:

Figure 4 - mood board created by myself

I really enjoyed this task as it gave me the creative freedom to express myself completely in my own way. I have included many different types of images in my mood board. One of the images that stands out most to me personally is the picture of the girl in the flowers. This picture represents how I feel like an individual in society that wants to break free and be creative without boundaries. Sometimes I feel like society just wants us all to act the same way, and be robots in their world of money hungry beings. But I feel like I want to be able to blossom as a creator. I want to be able to stretch to my full potential.

Another one of my favourite images from my mood board is the television with ‘Walt Disney’ inside it. This image represents my inner child. Disney is something that I would watch literally everyday when I was younger. Now I am older I never seem to have to time to sit down and just watch a classic Disney movie. This image represents how we all have an inner child, and we have to watch how much we show it to others and how often we let it free.

15

Page 16: katiemccamleyfilmandtv16.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewKatie McCamley. Year 2 – Film and Television . Unit 13 – Extended Project. Academic Year 2017-2018. Figure 1 - Remember

There is a fine line between liking something and having something that makes you who you are. This is why, to some people, having an image of Tyler Oakley on my mood board may seem confusing. Although it is true that I really like Tyler, that is not the reason this image is present on my mood board. Tyler is there to represent the LGBTQ+ community, and what can be done when you have some sort of platform to talk from. I think this represents me as I have very strong feelings regarding the LGBTQ+ community. Everyone deserves the right to be equal, regardless of sexuality, gender, religion and where you come from. Also, I think this image makes me who I am because I have always felt a need to try and inspire. It is a part of me that has, I think, defined who I am. I have a YouTube channel that (as of right now) has nearly 1000 subscribers, and the thought of being able to connect with and support and talk to all of these people has been something I have always wanted and aspired to do. There is just something in me that wants to talk and inspire and make people laugh.

Finally, I decided to use a picture of one of my favourite quotes; ‘creativity is the ability to make or think or see or hear something that did not exist before.’ I decided to use this particular quote as I feel it sums up my mind-set and my passion. Creativity is what keeps me going. Even when everything around me isn’t going great, I can focus of my energy on something creativity. The feeling of creating something completely new is inspiring, and something I never want to stop doing.

Who was I? (6 Months On):

Figure 5 - comparing my two mood boards

Six month later I decided to create another mood board to represent ‘Who I am’. In this short period of time you can honestly see that I have changed so much. As you can see, in this short time period my mood board has changed so much. Here is a bigger version of my ‘6 months on’ mood board:

The Scene I have picked is from an animated movie called “The Land Before Time.” I watched this movie a lot when I was younger and I always remember how much this scene would stick with me throughout the movie.

In the scene before this one the mother of Little foot, the main dinosaur in the movie, saves Little foot and his friend from a Sharptooth, which is another dinosaur, but in the process they get separated and the mother dies in a really emotional and powerful scene.

Although this scene was really moving, the scene I actually decided to pick was the one after that, where Little foot finds another dinosaur and talks to him about what happened.

Although I didn’t fully realise this when I was younger, this scene tackles grief in a way that children can understand. Watching it now I can see that it actually shows some of the different stages of grief like anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. I feel like this scene was actually in some ways more powerful than the death of the mother figure, as it shows something I think a lot of people can relate to.

I honestly think everything about this scene is perfect, from the amazing 80’s animation, to the music, to the incredible script that tackles grief in such a delicate way.

A One Minute Video Describing Who I Am:

Figure 8 - Who am I video - (Mc, 2016)

Filming the ‘Who Am I’ video was a really interesting experience. Because I have a YouTube channel, I am used to filming in one long take and editing the vast majority out. Making a video without any cuts or editing I found to be quite difficult, but now I have done it once, I would be interested in doing it again.

I feel like the video I made came out how I wanted it to because I wanted to represent and show that I am not defined by how I look. I am not defined by how I move my hands a lot when I talk. How I see the world and how I share my passion is what defines me.

I found a suitable location to film, there weren’t many people around and there was an incredible contrast between the sharp edges of the towering buildings and the subtle, baby blue sky. By doing this I was trying to represent the harsh reality of life and society compared with what I want to define myself as. As a species humans are obsessed with routine and order. Everything has to be ‘inside the lines.’ But as an individual I want to step out of the lines and explore. I want to be able to let my creativity blossom. This is why I decided to pan down to my feet at the end, showing that these ideas are in my head are what I wish for, and that I have not yet accomplished everything I have set out to do to make me yet.

My Family:

As I said in the ‘Who Am I?” video: my family make me who I am. They have shaped my opinions and my personality and I couldn’t be more thankful. Every single picture in this mood board means something incredible important to me.

Figure 9 - my family - a mood board by myself

One example of a picture that means a lot to me is the picture of my Grandad with my cousin. This picture is extremely important as unfortunately my

Grandad passed away before I was born, and so having pictures like these show that even though some family may not be present any more, they are still a really important part of me and my life.

Another one of the most significant photos on this mood board is the picture of me and my friends when we were in Italy. To me personally, my friends are part my family and so going to Italy with my school was one of the best experiences of my life: we had so much freedom to just explore and find out even more about the country and ourselves as people. My friends and I have become even closer due to the Italy trip and have formed memories that will never forget.

I really enjoyed this task as it gave me a chance to show how important my family are and how much they mean to me. I’m so thankful to have people around me that have been able to help me in the journey to pursue my passion to go into film and television. They always encourage me to follow my dreams and this mood board shows all of the positive things that we’ve been through together as a family.

Who Am I Now?

After looking back through my previous ‘Who I am’ work, I have been inspired to delve deeper, and to question who I am on a more precise level. Throughout the rest of this chapter I will be discussing a variety of different things that make me who I am. One example of this is that I will be producing both a skills timeline (which will details the skills I joined the course with, and the skills I have now ) and a skills focus (which details and explain the skills I am considering developing and working on for my Extended Project.) As well as this I will also be discussing one of my favourite media practitioners. I hope that this task will help me to develop my understanding of not only this skills I want to develop for my Extended Project, but also Who I Am.

What did I learn on my course? Whilst completing my extended project at the very end of last year I created a detailed timeline of my skills and how they have developed throughout the year. I truly believe that this detailed skills timeline is still completely relevant now, and really shows my development throughout the past year:

Further Development:

Although I do believe that this skills timeline shows basic skills that I have gained throughout the first year of this course, I do think that I have developed these skills to a higher level throughout this last term. Here are some examples:

Lighting:

Another thing that I have definitely worked on a lot on throughout this year is lighting. In one of my favourite tasks, we were given the chance to represent different situations using simply lighting and sound. This task forced me to think in detail about how to use different types of lighting to represent different situations. Overall I think that this was one of the most successful and educational tasks that I have completely so far. Here is my reflection of the task in greater detail:

Teamwork:

31

Page 32: katiemccamleyfilmandtv16.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewKatie McCamley. Year 2 – Film and Television . Unit 13 – Extended Project. Academic Year 2017-2018. Figure 1 - Remember

GO TO CONTENTS

Overall, I am incredibly inspired and positive about the way our team came together today. This is by far my favourite task that we have worked on as a crew, and I am incredibly proud of the shots that we have shot throughout today. We worked extremely successfully as a team, communicating well between each other. We also tried to rotate roles throughout the production of these shots, so each person got a chance to work in role throughout the day.

One really positive element of our teamwork is that we all acted professionally, and communicated well between each other if we felt as though a shot was not successful. One example of this is the shot set ‘in front of the television’. At first we used a dark blue gel on the key light to represent the television screen. When we all watched this back, some of our team felt as if the dark blue gel was too dark, and not representative of the TV set. This is why we decided to use a light blue gel instead. Looking back, this definitely looked a lot better. If we didn’t have honesty and good communication within our group, we would never have experimented with different gels, and found a shot that was far better than our original.

Shots:

Sitting by the fire:

The first shot that we had to create, was using lighting to represent siting by the fire. Overall, I am really happy with how this shot turned out. One of the most successful elements within the lighting composition is the way that we flickered both the key light and the fill light to create the illusion of a fire flickering.

The television set:

I am also incredibly happy with this shot as well, I think that the added Foley Sound helps to add even more emphasis to the fact that the character is sitting, staring at her television screen. Reflecting upon this shot, I do feel as though we could have changed the tones of the colours coming from the ‘Television set’ slightly more, just to suggest that the scenes and shots of the television were changing slightly. This would have added a slightly more realistic effect, but overall I am still incredibly please with this shot. The added prop of the gaming controller has also really helped to the illusion to the character being in front of a Television set/ computer.

Driving in a car:

The final shot that we had to create was a shot of a character driving in a car. As you can see in the short, we used different tones of lights to create the illusion of streetlights going past the character. I really think that using the different tones of light, for example using a plain LED light with a diffuser and another LED light with a light orange gel, to create the most realistic lighting possible.

Final task:

Green Screen Setup - Clarine, B. (2015, December 31). DIY Green Screen Complete Setup Guide

One thing that I learnt a lot about this year is greenscreen. This was an amazing opportunity for me, as it is something that I have always wanted to learn more about.

After we set up the Green Screen for the first time, we then had the opportunity to shoot our own scene. Our group decided to make a short, 30 second clip of our Actor talking about Planet Earth. This is because of the fact that we all loved the idea of using the Green Screen to make it look like there were different animals in the background, as this would be something we, as students, would not be able to budget and do in a small space of time. We curated a short script for the Actor so we would have some video footage to experiment with in Post-Production.

After Filming, I came back up to complete the editing of the project. Editing green screen is actually incredibly simple. All you have to do is:Add the green screen video to one video track, and the video you want to replace the green screen in another video track. Use the effects button, and drag and drop the ‘Spectra Matte’ effect onto the clip with the green screen. Go to the ‘effects mode’ button, and specify a key colour by using the paint tool to select the green of the green screen. You can now click onto the 3D effects button to scale, crop and manipulate your Actor or object within the green screen to how you would like it.

Here is my first attempt at greenscreen:

Confidence:

Confidence is something that I have always struggled with slightly. Although I have confidence in terms of talking about Film, I often struggle when trying to have confidence in my own. Throughout this term I feel as though I have developed in this respect. I am now trying to pick out positives within my work instead of focusing on all of the negative points that I find. I am also making sure that I learn from any negatives that I find within my work and grow and improve by finding solutions to any problems or difficulties I may have encountered.

Overall, in the last year I have developed in such a wide range of different ways, on both a personal level, and a technical level and I am excited to develop even further whilst completing unit 13.

Skills Focus:

Whilst delving deeper into who I am, I realised that one of the main skills that I want to work on throughout my project is lighting. I love the fact that focusing on lighting can really add another layer of detail to a production. Adding to this, I also want to focus on colour correction, adding to the depth and realism of each and every shot. I also want to work on my camerawork, to ensure that I am using a variety of different shot types to ensure each shot unique and important.

After breaking everything down, it is clear that who I am and the skills that I have learned throughout my diploma have really been some of the most important factors into what makes me do my project.

Figure 27 – what’s your plan image - (Watson, 2018)

My personal experiences have clearly influence my choices for my project:

The idea for my project:

life is so short, and it so easy to get caught up and worried about being ‘perfect’, but surely everything that is living and breathing, creating and doing is perfect. It is so much more important to make your mark on society because of what you have done to impact other peoples lives, not that you have the perfect eyebrows, body or thigh gap. Personally, I really struggle with my body image. I constantly check myself in the mirror, and get upset over the smallest imperfections that others fail to notice. If anything, I am not only doing this project to help others, but tot better myself as well.

My role in the project:

My personal experiences throughout this year have really motivated me to get involved in every single stage of the production process of this project. I am going to be involved in every single job, including Director and Producer. I have been given a vast amount of opportunities throughout the year to learn and practise each role within the production process, and this is why I now have the confidence to take control of each of these roles in some way or another.

How my project relates to my future career:

I don’t have a set idea concerning what I want to do when I am older, although I am certain that I want to show my work, or help the creations of others to be created and shown in some way. My project is a short film because I feel like this is the best way to show and put across vivid, realistic emotions to my audience. It is what I want to do for the rest of my life, and so I want to begin as soon as I can.

Figure 28 - my project animation - (Ankor, 2018)

The basic premise of my project is the following:

an experimental film focusing on how today’s society has such a fixed definition of what is meant to be ‘perfect’, and how this is slowly being changed in the present day. I would be focusing on societies views towards, young women. This would include looking at social media sites such as Instagram and snapchat. I would like to use footage from catwalks, take articles from magazines, images from social media, adverts on the street and other forms of media and combine it with my own, to create an experimental short film about societies outdated views on the definition of the word ‘perfect’, and how the meaning of this word is changing dramatically.

Thinking in detail about this, I seek to inform and inspire my target audience. In todays society, it has become so hard to accept yourself for who you are because of everything posted on social media. As a young teenager, you can view thousands of selfies and ‘body goals’ pictures, but this is all fabricated, highly edited and planned. The person taking these photos will have taken dozens just to get the perfect one. It is so easy to get put down by what you see on social media, but none of it is actually real. This is something I would like to consider in more detail. I could research into different people’s experiences with social media and how this has affected them and how they live their lives. I seek to help my target audience in their journey towards accepting themselves for who they are, ‘flaws’ and all.

Although I did touch on it previously, my project relates extremely closely to my target audience (which is most likely going to be, predominantly women, most of them between 15-25, as this is the age where most girls and women get most into social media, and understand societies expectations of women, but it could also interest any person who is fascinated by societies idea of being ‘perfect’ and what this entails.) I think that it will relate so closely to them because of the fact that societies opinions and social media is such a huge part of young peoples lives. Media consumes their daily lives, almost suggesting that they are unable to escape from this constant pressure surrounding leading the perfect life.

What is my project about?

http://edtech2.boisestate.edu/jaciprance/502/webquest/conclusion.html

Overall, to conclude this chapter I will be summarising what my project is about and my role within the project.

In today’s society, there is such a high level of pressure pushed upon both men and women to live up to beauty standards set by everything seen within the media and day to day life. My documentary style film will discuss this in detail. This is important because there are so many individuals, including myself, that have struggled so much with trying to live up to societies ‘definitions of perfect’. It is only now that I am beginning to understand that you can’t let this one type of ‘perfect’ be the only version of what is beautiful. By using footage of things familiar to my audience such as billboards, television adverts and catwalks, I will show and prove that society does have this strict and closed minded idea of what it means to be perfect.

My roles within this project will include: Director, Producer, Script Writer, Cameraman, Editor and Narrator.

Why my project is important?

My project is important because I want to make an impact on my audience. As I mentioned previously, I see so many friends and peers looking at themselves in the mirror and being so convinced that they aren’t perfect. Because of everything on social media, and constantly seeing generically beautiful celebrities, they have managed to convince themselves that they are less than that. I want to inform my audience in an experimental, documentary style way that they are perfect in their own way, and they should try to not let the pressures of society get in the way of them feeling good. Men shouldn’t have to be tall and muscular, and women don’t have to have a tiny waist to be beautiful.

Although I have watched a variety of documentaries specifically talking about people who have pushed through and now feel perfect within themselves, I think that a more experimental style documentary aimed more at a younger audience is needed within the media industry.

My Research Plan

Table 3- My Research Plan

EXTENDED PROJECT - RESEARCH PLAN No of Words

Interest/Topic/Theme 150The main theme of my research will be about society and the concept of trying to live up to unrealistic standards. I will be researching into a variety of different existing similar media products to that of my idea. For example, I will be watching short documentaries such as ‘I became Anorexic for Instagram’ (2018). I want to inform my audience that they don’t have to try to live up to society’s definition of perfection, but first l I should find out more about other peoples experiences. I will also look at experimental films to gain a greater understanding of my chosen genre, for example ‘Water – Experimental Documentary (2014)’. I will be reading books, listening to podcasts and using interactive elements such as websites, blogs, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram posts. All of these existing media products relating to my project will give me a broader perspective on not only what is already out there but hopefully I will learn even more about my subject matter. Why is it important? - Importance 100My project is important because I want to make an impact on my audience. I see so many of my friends and peers feeling demotivated and ‘ugly’ because of everything on social media and in everyday life. I want to inform my audience in an experimental, documentary style way that they are perfect in

Since the 1920’s, how has societies definition of perfection changed in terms of appearance?

Which editing software do I work best on and which one will be the best suited for my project?

What different editing techniques are there to create the most informative piece possible?

To what extent do my target audience feel the pressures of society and what they see in day to day life?

What examples are there currently in television to show societies unrealistic standards?

How do I define and summarise society’s definition of ‘perfect’?

Research Design 100I will be completing a literature review on how society’s definition of perfection has changed from the 1920’s in terms of appearance. I will use found footage to edit a short piece on Avid and Final Cut Pro which will develop my skills and show the software I work best on. I will conduct focus groups with members of my target audience to understand the extent my target audience feel the pressures of society. Introduction

Within this chapter I will present a variety of different literature and resources that I have collated in relation to this project and how it influenced my further research, study and development of the final idea for the project.

To summarise, throughout this chapter I will be completing firstly a Practitioners Report which will focus on two directors that have helped to inspire me to want to create this short, documentary style film. I will also be completing a Media Product Review, where I will go into greater detail when thinking about what similar media products there are already out there, how similar media products have influenced and shaped my project and what I have learnt from these similar media products? I will also be completing a literature review on how society’s definition of perfection has changed from the 1920’s to the present day in terms of appearance. The chapter concludes with ideas and key conclusions of all the resources used in this chapter

There are already a vast variety of resources that I could use that would significantly benefit my project. They cover all aspects of my project, including experimental film, documentaries, the topic of unrealistic

Practitioners Report:Throughout this section I will be completing a practitioner’s report of two different Directors, one from the present day and one from the past. I have decided to focus on one director who mainly creates documentaries, and the other whom mainly creates experimental Short Films. I hope that this will help me in a variety of different ways. For example, I hope that by looking at an experimental film Director from the past will not only inspire me, but help me to understand the broad definition of what is classed as ‘experimental’.

Michael Apted:

Figure 30 - Michael Apted - (Lattanzio, 2013)

The first Director that I have decided to focus on is Michael Apted. I was originally inspired to do a more Documentary focused piece due to Apteds’ ‘Up’ series, which I will discuss in more detail further through this practitioners report. I am really enthusiastic about learning about Apted and about his life and filmography. I think that this will help not only to motivate and inform me, but also to just give me a broader knowledge of what documentaries and Films are already out there.

Life:

Figure 31 - Apted on set - (IMDB, n.d.)

The first thing that I will be looking at is Apteds’ life up to this point. I want to understand how Apted got started, and how he came to be interested in Film, Documentaries and editing.

Apted with born on 10 the February 1941. In 1963, after attending The City of London School and reading History and Law at Cambridge, he was able to join a 6 month apprenticeship at ‘Granada TV in Manchester’. After this apprenticeship he actually stayed with the company for seven years. Within this time he worked on well over 50 productions.

This job lead to many opportunities in researching, directing and investigating. Throughout this time he became well established within the industry. Throughout his time within the industry, Apted work on a multitude of popular shows, for example Stardust (1974) and Agatha (1979). Before this though, in the 1970’s, he spent the next few years Directing plays for companies such as ITV and BBC.

One of the things that inspired me about Apted is the fact that he tried create both Hollywood movies as well as more personal projects with a more niche audience.

In 1980, Apted was invited to America to work on a project that never ended up actually being produced. Even though this project was technically unsuccessful, it led to an extremely pivotal moment for Apted: have the opportunity to make ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’ (1980). After the success of ‘Coal Miners Daughter’ Apted consequently made the decision to move to the US to continue making Films Television programs in America.

One of the most interesting things that I have researched so far is Apted’s Filmography. It has been informative to learn about the wide variety of Films, TV programs and Documentaries Apted has created as well as the ‘Up’ series that I was originally inspired by. Here is Apteds Filmography as a Director:

As you can clearly see by Michael Apteds’ Filmography as a Director, he has created a multitude of Films, TV Programs and Documentaries of a variety of different genres and themes. There is so much variety (which is really inspiring) with projects ranging from the 19th Bond Film, all the way to some of the first ‘Coronation Street’ (1967) episodes.

Overall this section has helped me to understand Apted and his work in more detail. At the beginning of this Practitioner report I was only focusing on his documentary work, but the rest of his Filmography has also been really educational to familiarise myself with.

Maya Deren:

(Rosenbaum, 2003)

The second Director that I have decided to study is ‘Maya Deren’. Born between 1917-1961, she is going to be my practitioner of choice from the past. Deren is an experimental Filmmaker. I am really excited to discover a lot more about Deren and her life. After watching two of her experimental Films, I would like to understand why she was so interested in Dance and movement.

Life:

Maya Deren (original name Elenora Derenkowsky), was born on April 29th 1917 in Kiev in the Ukraine. Deren:

‘was an American avant-garde filmmaker and film theorist of the 1940s and 1950s’ (experimentalcinema, n.d.)

To put this in simple terms, Deren created new and experimental Films; she thought outside of the box and created incredible works or art through the medium of Film.

In 1922, Deren immigrated to the United States with her parents. After this she went to secondary school at ‘League of Nations School in Geneva, Switzerland’. She then decided to studied Journalism. It is throughout this time that she became passionate about the Socialist movement, becoming active within the ‘Trotskyist Young People’s Socialist League’. Through this, Deren met her husband Gregory Bardackle, whom she went on to marry at the age of eighteen, but after graduating from New York University they got a divorce that was then finalized in 1939, the same year that she received a M.A. in Literature.

In 1941, Deren began working for Katherine Dunham, a choreographer. After meeting Alexander Hammid (a Czech photographer, cameraman and filmmaker) they married. In the early 1940’s Deren decided to use some of the inheritance that she received from her father to buy a Camera. Deren and Hammid then codirected ‘Meshes of the Afternoon.’ (1943).

After this time, Deren created five more short films. For example, Derens’ second Film was ‘At Land’ (1944). Other creations of hers includes: ‘Ritual in Transfigured Time. (1946) and ‘Meditation on Violence (1948).

Another interesting thing that I have learnt about Deren through this research is that she had a passion for dance. It is clear to me that she was inspired by the complexities of dance, and the way that distorting the body in different ways can make for exciting and visually interesting shots.

Deren also lectured and taught in the United States. She was often able to distribute her own Films through this, promoting her work through a variety of screenings.

articles, journals, podcasts, web sites, documentaries etc. As you gather this information, it will either support your original research question, or provide you with new areas to research, or even make you consider an alteration in your research plan, and a change to your research questions. As you read and analyse the different source material, you will start to synthesis (Look at the Literature Review PowerPoint to remind you of what that is) the information you are acquiring. Your analysis and synthesis is what you detail in your Literature Review. It allows you to clearly and academically demonstrate that you have researched and analysed the existing sources relevant to your media product.

Media Product Review

In this section you need to examine and explore existing media products, media practices and ideas in the spirit of creativity and imagination. Identify different media projects related to your media project. Record and analyse findings.

What are similar media products and how is my work related to them? (position yourself and your project in relation to similar media products)

How have similar media products influenced my project?

How have they shaped my project?

What did I learn from similar media products? (compare similar media products, how it influenced your perspective and ideas for the project)

Conclusion

Answer the following questions: -

Who or what was my inspiration for my project? Refer to Chapter 1, and your “Who am I?” task to help you answer these questions.

Contextualisation of my study – this is, “What was your motivation to do your project?” Refer to Chapter 1 and your Project Proposal to help you answer these questions.

Research Design

IntroductionThis chapter is ‘How-to’ section of your EXTENDED PROJECT. In this chapter you have to introduce the design of the research, how data was collected.

The introduction should be relatively brief, simply providing an overview of the chapter. For example:

This chapter explains research design for my EXTENDED PROJECT. It starts with research questions and follows by the description of the research design and research methods used in my project.

Research Questions

Start with stating the intent of your Extended Project – what are you trying to achieve?

Outline the key characteristics of your project. Write about your overall research aim. Ask yourself: “What do I want to find out?”

You have to base your research design on your research questions Write clear research questions, detailing what you wanted to find out and why?

Each piece of resarch needs to have a question, before you can start. The research activity should be supportive and relevant to the type of information you are trying to find out.

Research Design

In this part of the chapter, you will expand on what you wrote in your project proposal. Write about what you researched and how you collected your information/data (research activities).

Remember, in this chapter, you will only write what you have researched and what research activities you used. In the next chapter, you will write about your findings, analysis and conclusions

This primary research is anything done by you, such as:- Online questionnaire – you could ask your Facebook friends to comment on your

project idea and give you some additional ideas how you can make it better. Get the feedback from your Lecturers and peers and reflect on it in relation to your

journey. You can contact companies, the council, artists, depending on what your project is

about to get their opinion on your project idea. You can use your phone or tablet to research, take photos of possible locations and

places that you can use in your project. Practical activities such as creating models, drawings, recording, filming, working in

Photoshop. Experimentation

Target Audience ResearchAsk yourself questions: Who? What? Where?

of media or entertainment they consume. Where can you find this out? You can use, ‘YouGov Profiles’ site to find out about

your target audience demographic. (secondary) You can set up interviews or record a ‘Vox Pops’ (primary) to find information about

your audience. Skills and Techniques Research

Come up with the plan of what skills and techniques you will need to research to produce an effective, original and to near professional standard project.

For example, you can watch tutorials or read about how to achieve specific skills and techniques that you will need for your project (secondary) (cross reference)

Experiment with range of skills yourself (primary) (cross reference)

Production ResearchExplain what and how: o People needed for the production/availability (how: emails, Facebook, Skype

conversation, etc.) o Research production roles that you will need to carry out and how to do it

successfully (how: the internet, media books, etc.) o Production schedule (how: create your own) o Budget (How: secondary internet, primary ask yourself) o Recce research/location needed (how: take images, contact individuals for

permission, etc.) o Health and safety research ( How: take images, check locations yourself, ask for

permission) o Visual ideas (storyboard optional) (How: take images, create sketches, get

inspired by other people ideas, etc.) o Props (how: make a list, ask to borrow, make it, buy it, use what you have)o Production (techniques, hardware, workflow) (how: research what you need /

how: try it yourself) o Post -production (Edit, colour correction, VFX, etc. (how: read, watch how other

people/professionals do it, try it yourself)

Conclusion

List all research activities

What activities did you conduct to answer your questions and collect the data? Write about the information and data you collected; your choice of data presentation and how you structured your information.

The research activities should be identified such as:

CHAPTER 4

Research Findings

In this chapter, you will summarise the collected data and the statistical treatment, and/or mechanics, of analysis. You should start this paragraph by briefly restating the topic/theme of your project (take it from Chapter 1).

Explain the object of each question, research activity, point out results, and present those results in a chosen form of summarised data. Select method of presenting data carefully.

In a quantitative study, the results usually begin with a description of the sample (e.g., sample size, description of participants who were excluded and why, handling of missing data). Next, descriptive statistics (e.g., frequencies/percentages for categorical variables, means, standard deviations, and ranges for continuously measured variables) are presented.

In a qualitative study, the results often include many quotes from participants who were interviewed. Here you should also present your non-textual elements such as photos, videos, audio files, maps, tables, charts, mind maps, SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis, etc.

Findings/Data analysis What did you learn from your research and how did it inform our project?

Present, explain and contextualize findings

Background and context of the work (refer to work produced in Chapter 1) What is it that makes me do my project? My personal experiences that influence my choices (idea for the project, my role in

the project, how it relates to my future possible career) What is the basic premise of my project? What do I seek to achieve and how it relates to my target audiences?

Use Findings to contextualize my Project. Present and Discuss Findings. (refer to work produced in Chapter 2)

What are similar media products and how my work relates to them (position yourself in relation to similar media products)

How do similar media products include my project? How they shaped my project? (thought and action) What did I learn from similar media products? (compare similar media products,

how did they influence your perspective and ideas for the project – talk about both script and techniques)

CHAPTER 5

My Project

Introduction In this chapter you should present the level of self-direction, personal initiative and commitment necessary to progress ideas and find solutions, and the practical, theoretical and technical comprehension, appreciation, knowledge and proficiency necessary to achieve identified goals. The ability to plan and organise work within a given timeframe and the efficient production of outcomes both individually and collaboratively.

Pre-Production Produce Pre-Production Portfolio which will formally define your project (location

survey; risk assessment; treatment; script; budget; schedule etc.). Pitch your proposal to the production board (video recording of your production

board presentation)

Analyse your target audience. Investigate the target demographic and record the type of media or entertainment they consume

Production Project management techniques, (notes of team meetings; production and post-

production schedules; call sheets, etc.) Team and individual performance monitoring (weekly check against schedule)

Development – Demonstrate development (photos from the shoot, screenshots from computers). Keep daily production and post-production diary and reflect on your production process.

Post-production Describe post post-production of your project.

Assess your production and post-production process. Describe, and critically analyses any production problems and the solution you experienced.

Presentation In this part of chapter, you should demonstrate ability to be able to present a creative media production project to a specified audience. Your EXTENDED PROJECT has to be presented appropriately (effectively; imaginatively) and presented with suitable (relevant; purposeful) media conventions to suit the target audience.

You have been given the showcase of the Summer Shows (see calendar for dates). You need to explore the different strategies needed to present your Extended Project.

Your presentation will very much depend on the medium of your Extended Project. In the Summer Shows, there will be the possibility to screen your films, exhibit your photos, or display your scripts and Pre-production Planning Documents. You need to:-

Decide what medium is most relevant for your project and target audience, and detail why you think it is the most relevant approach.

Design your presentation, paying particular attention to your target audience. If you are producing a horror video, a screening at 3pm in the main street is not appropriate. You need to detail and plan all elements of your presentation, from the physical exhibition space to the supporting promotional material and supporting paperwork such as a programme.

Write about what influenced your decision to present your work in a certain way. You should look at other events which have showcased productions similar to yours, such as Trailers, Art Galleries, and Festivals.

Project Evaluation

Critically evaluate your finished media project against the agreed requirements and parameters.

Answer the following questions: Introduce the project in your words List five strengths and five weaknesses in your final design Was there a theme for the design ideas? Can you describe it? Can you reference any

influences here? - art movements, designers, media companies/campaigns, etc. What experiments and exploration did you do (what happens if). How did it affect your

development? Find a similar type of design publication - place it next to your own - what

comparisons/difference can you identify? What were the key areas of development in this project? - use your daily reflections to

help you with this Review your proposal - what changed, what developments did you make, did you manage

to complete everything you set out to achieve? What did the client think of your concept? How did that make you feel? What could you do to adapt the work produced to improve and develop it? Is the final work appropriate for the needs of the project? Does it sufficiently answer your

brief? Reflect on your pitch to the board; how did you feel about it before? Did it go better or

worse than you expected? What was the feedback from the client/lecturer? What do you think you could improve next time?
