We are fortunate to have 85 preps enrolled for next year. Therefore we will have four classes. Mirella Irving, Sandra Donovan and Mel Johnson all current Karoo staff will be joined by a new staff member, Sophie Brown. The evening was a great success and well attended by parents both new and also existing families. Our Prep team shared information to ensure the parents are supported to prepare their child for this exciting time in their lives. We can be very prepared and organised for these sessions however I believe the most valuable aspect of the night was the opportunity for parents to ask questions. I would like to acknowledge the great preparation and informative presentation provided by the Prep team. Melissa from Out of School Hours Care and the Office staff (Sue, Anna and Karen) also attended and capably answered questions asked by parents. Thanks also to Andrea Haley (School Council President) and Fiona Robinson (School Council Treasurer) for attending the night too. They both answered questions and also provided an insight to their experiences at the school. Many thanks to everyone who attended. On Friday we held our first whole school transition session. Students eagerly made their way to a different classroom where they participated in some energising activities. These were designed to provide them with an opportunity to meet other students and to share about their strengths as a learner and their interests. All valuable skills to assist staff to form classes for 2018. We welcomed five new students to the Transition session and look forward to having them continue their learning at Karoo. School Structure and Staffing for 2018 Currently we are working on class lists for next year, I would like to advise parents that we are no longer able to accept letters of request from parents. Due to the fluctuation in the number of students enrolling and leaving the school we have had to reorganise many class lists, this is now having an impact on the allocation of staff to year levels for 2018. If your child is not returning to Karoo next year I would greatly appreciate this information in a letter addressed to me. A few students have spoken about changing schools, we require formal notification from parents, there is a process to be completed to exit students. We are currently in the process of employing a new staff member, this also has an impact on the allocation of staff. I understand many students and parents are keen to know about next year, we are doing the best we can. It is important to follow processes to ensure we have effective teaching teams at all levels across the school. I am very hopeful that we can announce our structure and staff allocation in the next newsletter. Year 5 Students preparing to be our new school leaders Despite the busy time of the year it is always a great privilege to sit down and listen to our Year 5 students present their speech, part of the process to select leaders for next year. The students have very capably written heart- warming and honest speeches, highlighting their personal attributes and desire to be a school leader. The process includes Year 5 staff, current school leaders, Mrs Marker and myself. We then consult with all staff before decisions are made. Final Assembly Our final assembly will be Thursday 21 st December at 9.00 a.m. Current School Captains Danielle and Sam will announce the 2018 School Captains. Karoo Citizenship awards and Rowville Lysterfield scholarships for two Year 5 students will be announced too. Staff Carpark Student safety is paramount at Karoo, many thanks to the parents who have been supporting me to ensure the school driveway is a safe place for our students. We have noted significant decrease in the number of parents who do the wrong thing and hope that those who are continuing to use the staff carpark inappropriately cease doing so. I will continue to monitor the situation and implore the school community to be responsible and show care towards others. Christmas Raffle The Christmas Stocking is once again in the foyer and already has several donations. We would love it if you are able to send along some Christmas goodies to help fill the stocking! We have a number of excellent vouchers and some fantastic items that have been donated to the school, which will be part of the prizes. Raffle tickets will be coming home today, each family receiving 5 tickets selling for $2 each. The raffle will be drawn at Carols evening on Monday 11th December. On the 14th of November the Year 5s went on an excursion to Rowville Secondary College Maths and Science Academy.

First my group went into the science lab with Mr Johnstone and we got put on lab coats and safety glasses, we did a really cool experiment which was making raisins dance in a cup of vinegar and bi-carb soda.

Next my group went into a classroom to do robotics with Miss Strain. It was really cool—we got to build a brick programme and make the robot spin around and drive back and forward.

Then my group went into another classroom where there was a piece of string, some sticky tape, 20 pieces of long pasta, and a marshmal-low; our challenge was to balance the marshmallow on top of the pasta sticks and whoever could make the highest tower wins.

My experience at Rowville Secondary College was awesome and I would definitly go back there.

By Olivia W—5W

I was really excited going to Rowville Secondary College because I love science and I had heard about their Maths and Science Academy before. When we got there we were in our groups lining up ready to go in. They opened the doors and we went in a room that was to the right to listen to Miss Fraser, the head of the Academy. When she had finished Mr Johnstone showed us something. He had a liquid inside a test tube like thing and shook it up and it went from a clear liquid to a blue liquid in 5 seconds! After another 5 seconds it went to a yellow colour and stayed that colour. Afterwards my group (group 1) went into the science lab as our first activity. We did dancing raisins. We filled in the first part of the sheet did the experiment with a real lab coat and goggles and then we filled in the second part of the sheet. Our second activity was robotics. In robotics we got into pairs and each pair got a Lego EV3 robot. We programmed it to drive off turn around and then come back and once we had done that we did the challenge. The challenge was to get the robot to drive until its touch sensor felt something and when it did it would back up turn around and keep driving. All of the groups did the last activity at the same time because it was a contest to see who could make the biggest tower that would hold up a marshmellow. We had to make it out of 20 pieces of spaghetti a metre of sticky tape and some string. We got to work with the Year 7s and it was a lot of fun, even though ours was one of the smallest. I really enjoyed going to Rowville Secondary College and I would like to go there for high school.

Written by Xander. H - 5W

On the 14/10/17 the Year 5s went to Rowville Secondary College Maths and Science Academy.

First my group went into the science lab and we made dancing raisins. We wore safety goggles and a lab jacket. It was really cool watching them go up and down. We got a cup of vinegar, then we put bicarb soda and raisins in. They went up and down because the vinegar and the soda made bubbles which attached to the raisin so they floated. Then the bubbles popped and the raisins fell down!

Then my group went to coding—it was fun. My partner was Katerina. We made a unicorn jump over a rainbow, then a wizard made the uni-corn disappear then reappear and then the wizard threw a ball at the unicorn. We did it in Scratch.

After that we went into the science lab and did a competition of who could make the highest tower. We had two Year 5s and a Year 7 named Alex. Our tower fell down after we put the marshmallow on the top, which is where we had to put the marshmallow. The highest was 80 cm.—unfortunately we did not win.

I had a great time! Taya M—5W

INDONESIAN NEWS

Wayang Kulit Performance The Year 4 students learnt about the Wayang Kulit or Shadow Puppet play in Term 4. These plays and performances are usually held at night in Indonesia. The students made their own puppets from cardboard and straws and performed the Ramayana play in groups of 2, 3 or 4 during their Indonesian lessons. One group was very good and was chosen to perform at assembly.

They practised very hard during lunch times and on Monday 27 November at the whole school assembly, they gave a marvellous performance and we are very proud of their achievement. Here are some of the photos of the play.
