Staffing Last week I received a call from Justin Butler (our Senior Education Improvement Leader) informing me that my Expression of Interest application for the Acting Principal role at Karoo was successful. The tenure is from 13

th November to 22

nd December.

Fiona Marker will continue her role as Acting Assistant Principal for the remainder of the term. Gemma Wild and Karen Watts will continue as class teachers for 3F until the end of the year.

Class Structure We are currently working to develop class lists for next year. Staff put a huge amount of effort and time into creating classes because they know that creating a positive learning environment will lead to better academic and social outcomes. We value and acknowledge the social development of students too; the playground is a great place for socialising with friends and making friends is an important skill in life.

Therefore we have developed a consistent approach to develop class lists and classes will be formed based on the following:

Students’ learning needs including a cross section of achievement levels

Staff recommendations including specialist teachers

Gender balance

Students will participate in Transition sessions, providing an opportunity for staff to observe groupings of students

To assist students to adjust to a new class in 2018, staff use Wellbeing sessions to develop every child’s ‘resilience’, that is the ability to adapt and adjust to change. Resilient students have skills and strategies to solve problems when they face unfamiliar or difficult situations and strive to find good solutions.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Year 3/4 Camp - Arrabri Lodge Last week I had the absolute pleasure of attending the Year 3/4 camp at Arrabri Lodge in Warburton for a day. It was fantastic to spend time with the students and see them thoroughly enjoying themselves. Highlights included soaring through the air on the ever popular giant swing, tackling the ropes course, zipping down the flying fox, cooking damper, lawn bowls, archery and the highly entertaining ‘Karoo Has Talent’ performance. Added to this was the nocturnal hike, bush dancing, a reptile show and the extreme excitement of sharing a cabin with friends. The students were very responsible in their duty groups and did a wonderful job setting and clearing tables after breakfast and dinner. Camp is an amazing experience and offers many opportunities for students to extend themselves physically, socially and, for some, emotionally in a supportive, safe environment. We would like to sincerely thank the staff who organized and attended the camp, as well as our wonderful parent helpers. Their dedication ensures that our students continue to have broad range of exceptional experiences at Karoo.

Leaving at the end of the year? If your child will not be returning to Karoo in 2018, we ask that parents inform the school in writing addressed to Leanne Vines or myself as soon as possible, to assist us with class structure planning for the new year. This does not include the Year 6 students.

A Note from Rhonda Luttrell

(Student Wellbeing Officer)

We are coming to that time of year where we spend a lot of time celebrating. We celebrate the end of the school year, but also dance, gymnastics, karate and other areas of participation. The last few weeks of the year can be a very busy time, however my encouragement to you is that you enjoy these times, as these are what memories are made from. The end of the year also brings people together for celebrating with family and friends. Throughout the year you have probably been celebrating birthdays, but with the end of the year, celebrations may include special Christmas and New Year events. Each family has their unique way of celebrating and family traditions are important; they provide a sense of identity, the shared memories and ways of doing things. Traditions and rituals often tell a story about a family, for instance how a family may love camping or travel together or how they celebrate with each other by playing simple games such as backyard cricket, or how you may decorate your home. These traditions strengthen family bonds and provide comfort and security while reinforcing family values and leaving long lasting memories. As you look toward the coming weeks, remember that when you do things together, you are creating a memory that will last a lifetime – Sometimes the most ordinary things could be made extraordinary simply by doing them with the right people. Just a reminder that I am at the school Monday and Thursday 8.30am to 4pm, please feel free to come and talk to me about any wellbeing concerns you may have for your child at school, my office is located in the Prep area.

Cheers,

Rhonda Luttrell
