PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Kalori /2

Welcome to Week 7! How this term has flown!

AFL clinics

Thanks to Miss Ross for organising the opportunity for students to be involved in AFL clinics today. Students have just started playing footy in their lunch times so this opportunity is timely! It has been an absolute pleasure to see them using our newly installed AFL posts. I am looking forward to football season and chatting with students about their weekend games. Just a reminder that ‘It is just a game’!

Improving Reading Comprehension

Over the past three weeks students have been completing reading assessments. These assessments have shown us students’ areas of strength. They have also provided much important information about their areas of need in understanding text. Teachers have been observing each other’s practice and have also trialling new strategies that support our students to comprehend deeply. At home you can help by asking more questions as your child is reading. Here are some examples of basic questions that you could ask.

Self-regulation project

Students are learning about growth mindset and how to talk to themselves in powerful ways when learning new things. Every time we face a challenge we begin the self-talk. Sometimes that self-talk is primed to speak in unhelpful ways (I can’t do this, I am not good enough, I don’t want to look silly, I don’t need to try). We can train ourselves to be more open to new experiences and learning challenges by using a growth mindset which changes your self-talk for the better (I don’t know this YET, I can try a different way, I am only just beginning to learn this so it should feel hard).

Celebrating Attendance

Our students have suffered through a particularly rough fortnight with many bouts of gastro. Thanks to those parents who made the call to keep their child home to minimise the risk of spreading. Unfortunately, it did hit the teachers in our junior classes but everyone is on the mend this week. Back to strong numbers of students attending in this week. It is important to get them back to school as soon as possible after an illness to get them back in the swing of learning.

Have a great week Tina

4/5 PURPLE CLASS NEWS

Year 4/5 Purple has been extremely busy engaging in a variety of learning tasks from mental additions and subtractions to writing convincing arguments to Mrs Roworth regarding shorter school hours. Last week was exciting as we prepared for our assembly item and we hope you enjoyed our fun skit.

The first five weeks of this term have been dedicated to honing the students’ skills in writing a persuasive text using techniques such as emotive language, modality, rhetorical questions, varied sentence starters and the Point, Explain, Evidence, Link (PEEL) model of writing an argument.

During Reading Groups, we are completing comprehensive text analyses of a variety of texts

such as poems, narratives and information texts. The students are encouraged to determine the author’s and illustrator’s purpose for including particular language choices, language features and images.

Our PDHPE focus this term how to deal with ethical and emotional dilemmas. It is challenging when confronted with the choice of being loyal vs being an upstander and this topic has created a great deal of discussion. We are concluding the term with a focus on Child Protection during which the students will learn that adults have a responsibility to protect all children and all children have a right to be safe.

Page 5: Kalori Henty Public School Week 7 Term 1€¦ · If your child wishes to order Recess/Lunch, please place orders in separate bags with correct change if possible and have your child

We have been making ourselves familiar with the Dash robots and the students have successfully created mazes through which they guide the robots using Blocky coding. This is a fabulous activity that involves planning, teamwork, use of mathematical concepts (e.g. angles) and spatial relations. Some students have taken the project a step further and have created a road safety lesson for Dash.

It is pleasing to see many students acting responsibly and completing their Home Learning by Friday. This process will help them to manage their time as

they enter high school where the Home Learning demands are much greater.

I hope you are enjoying the See Saw posts and if you do not have an account, please see me and I can help you create one on your Smartphone. If you have an queries or concerns, please feel free to pop in and see me for a chat.

Regards,Joanne Malmo
