We’d like to welcome the Campbell-Howard family, who have joined us this week and hope they enjoy their new classes and friends here at Kahibah PS. At Kahibah PS, not only do we have quality students, but we also have quality teachers. All classes have the opportunity to attend PE classes with Mr Lyddiard each week. K-2 classes have been anxiously engaged in nutrition lessons and lessons focusing on what we call the Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS). Students need to master certain FMS if they are to enjoy the wide range of physical activities, sports and recreational pursuits offered in our communities. There are twelve fundamental movement skills considered to be foundational for all games and sports played in Australia. It is important that these skills are taught in the formative years of schooling and that students are given opportunities to practise these skills throughout their primary schooling. 3-6 classes have also been enjoying lessons that address the further development of some of the FMS. Mr Lyddiard will continue working with the students in this role for the next two weeks before he takes leave, which will then lead into his retirement. We hope that from Term 2 onwards, there will be opportunities for Mr Lyddiard to return to Kahibah PS to teach in a casual capacity…if he’s not enjoying his retirement too much! Swimming Carnival Although the swimming carnival was off to a dramatic start with the bus incident on the way to the carnival, I’m happy to report that all students and staff that presented with minor injuries, seem to have bounced back remarkably well over the weekend. The incident is still under police investigation. However, may I commend the students for the calm and sensible way in which they conducted themselves. Even the Ambulance Officers commented on how well-mannered all the students were. I’d also like to commend the staff who promptly responded to the needs of the students, so that students could be assessed and reassured in such circumstances. “Thank you” to Mrs Filipo for her outstanding organisation of the day, and a “big thank you” to the teachers and parents who kindly stepped up to assist with the many roles and responsibilities that help a carnival to run smoothly. The manner in which the day unfolded is a true credit to the community spirit of Kahibah PS.

Sporting Achievements Amy A is one to keep your eye on when it comes to diving. This year already Amy has won a gold medal with Diving NSW. On the weekend she competed in Sydney, taking 2nd place, based on four outstanding dives from the 1m springboard. Congratulations Amy! In just his first year of Little Athletics, Hugh S attended the Regional Championships for Little Athletics on the weekend and was fortunate to place in the following events: 60m Hurdles - 1st place (just missing the regional record by .33 of hundredths of sec.) 100m Sprint – 2nd place 200m Sprint – 3rd place Hugh will now be attending State for these events later in March. We wish him every success as he continues to develop his athletic talent and strive for his personal best!

Scripture / Non-Scripture & Ethics The 2015 Scripture Program will commence tomorrow, (Wednesday 18th February), during the middle session. Students have been sorted into classes, based on the preference parents indicated on the Scripture note that was due back last week. If your child did not return the note, the group they were placed in, was based on the information provided at time of enrolment. Students could only be placed in an Ethics class, if at first the note indicated non-scripture. If Christian Scripture was ticked on the note, then that is where they were placed. The Ethics coordinator has informed the school that Ethics teachers will be fully trained by the end of the term, ready to commence classes in Term 2. For organisational purposes, students have already been grouped into their Ethics classes and will be supervised by a teacher during that half hour, as they participate in private study until Ethics classes commence next term. If you have any concern about the placement of your child, please send me a little note so your concern can be addressed and your child placed more appropriately.

Anaphylaxis Anaphylaxis is a potentially life threatening medical condition. It is a severe and sudden allergic reaction, which occurs when a person is exposed to an allergen, (such as a food product or an insect bite). We do have students at Kahibah Public School that are susceptible to anaphylactic reactions. In an attempt to keep our students safe and minimise the risk of exposure, we request that all parents clearly label lunch boxes, bottles and other drinks with the name of the child for whom they are intended. We ask that parents remind their children about the importance of washing hands, eating their own food, and not sharing food, food utensils or food containers. We are also asking parents not to send Nutella or peanut butter on sandwiches, or nut products in school lunches, but rather save these food preferences for home and for weekends.

Chaplain’s Message Friendships are very important to us all as humans, as they give us support in difficult times, as well as providing us with joy & happiness.

It is important for children to learn how to establish and maintain good friendships as early as possible, and to understand what it means to be a good friend to others.

When asked what makes a "Good Friend", most children give very similar answers, such as: "Someone who smiles when they greet you, is caring, is helpful, plays with you, laughs with you, etc."

If you were asked what makes a "Good Friend", what would your top answers be?

A really simple answer, is one that I've seen quoted a few times, recently.

"Good friends make bad days a little more bearable!"

So, nurture your friendships and let your friends know how much you value them.

Have a happy day. Helen Harvie (Mrs Rainbow) School Chaplain.
