This year we also had at least three brothers go to the Grand Coun- cil in Heaven and these members needed to be replaced in addition to the twenty plus members we needed to recruit. This will be our goal for the coming year as well. Let’s see how many members we will need to join us so plans can be made. Rick Kendzior is the Membership Director, but you are all recruiters. Please keep that in mind. If you have asked someone to join but they seem hesitant, let Rick know so he can explain the whole membership program to them. Also, we need to make our insurance member numbers as well. With this column I am asking our insurance director, Dave Mazurk, to our next meeting to discuss the current, new and inexpensive insurance programs. Thanks in advance, Dave. Then at the Business meeting we had our elections for the coming Fra- ternal Year. They are: Grand Knight Tim Hicklin; Deputy GK Greg Ives; Chancellor Glenn Labello; Recorder Bob Wyman; Treasurer Mike Bradley; Advocate Pat Slowey; Warden Mike Kebr; Inside Guard Kevin Scanlan; Outside Guard Paul Ruiz; 3 Year Trustee Marty Zopp; 2 Year Trustee Not up for Vote Vince Esposito; 1 Year Trustee Not up for Vote Bob Thomas; Delegate to Conv Grand Knight; Delegate to Conv Vince Esposito; Altenate to G K Deputy G K; Alt to 2nd delegate Steve Haugh. Also, Fr. Simon will carry forward as our Chaplain; and Pat Bradley will continue as Lecturer. Steve Haugh will continue through this year as Financial Secretary per appointment by Supreme Council. Any Director and event chairmen who would like to step down, please let me know by the next Business Meeting 7/3/203. I’d like to retain all, but will understand if you would like some time back in your life. Thank you for your Time and dedication. And a final thank you to District Deputy, John Orso. His term is up and he has kept our council well informed and on top of all the Illinois State Council information. Thank you, John for a job well done over the last few years. Dear Brothers,

Praise be to Jesus Christ!

Thank you all for helping me through me first year as Grand Knight. The goal for this last Fraternal Year was to earn our Star Council award. It’s been awhile, but even though we brought in many members we fell a bit short. This year we also had at least three brothers go to the Grand Coun-cil in Heaven and these members needed to be replaced in addition to the twenty plus members we needed to recruit. Grand Knight’s Report, continued We held our installation dinner at the social meeting on Tuesday, John 18th. All of the officer positions were filled and sworn in. We will have an Officer and Director in July when our calendar is finalized. The agenda items will be the Calendar and our goal(s) for this coming Fraternal Year. After the Installation, we gathered in the Community Center for pizza and a Council Appreciation (K)night. During the dinner, I had the absolute honor of awarding the Knight and Family of the Year.

Kevin Scanlan was awarded Knight of the year for all he has done while being a knight. He chairs multiple events throughout the year and is al-ways available and willing to lend a hand where needed. Congratulations, Kevin, for all you do.

The Family of the Year was awarded to Dan and Annette O’Connell. Dan and his family members are always participating in Knight’s events. They are heavily invo;ved with the 5th Degree and Dan is also the Boy Scout charter representative for our Scout Troop. Dan also chaired the com-mittee this year for the Council’s donation for the St. Thomas Adoration Chapel. Thank you, Dan, and congratulations on a family job well done!

Finally, by the time this is published, we will have had our annual Clergy (K)night. Hope it was well attended and thank you Mike Chmiel for chairing this event.

Deputy Grand Knight’s Report Greg Ives

Worthy Brother Knights,A new fraternal year is upon us. With that comes new ideas and ways we can make this Council even better, in the spirit of Venerable Fr. Michael McGivney.Pope John Paul II called the Knights of Columbus the right arm of the Church. That is so true, and in many re-spects Council 3880 is the right arm of our very own St. Thomas the Apostle parish. Look around and see all the great things we have done in support of our parish, life and our Catholic Faith. But we can do more, and we will in the 2013-14 fraternal year. Look for programs geared toward dads through the Order’s Fathers for Good program. What, too, can we do to help us move in the evangelical steps of our par-ish? We do so much good from a service perspective – what else can we do to help drive our own faith experi-ence as Catholic gentlemen? We will find out. Here are a few ideas – attend a Light of the World retreat. Many of us have, and it is life changing. Put Saturday, Nov. 16 on your calendar to attend the Great Lakes Catholic Men’s Conference in DeKalb. Sign up for time for adoration in the new adoration chapel. Stop and see what the Men’s Group is all about on Saturday mornings. These are all steps in the right direction.I am excited about this new fraternal year. I am excited about bringing in new ideas, which will help bring in new members to our ranks. I am excited about the prospects of continuing to move in the direction Msgr. Dan has our parish heading. Great stuff.Vivat Jesus, Greg Ives Deputy Grand Knight

Now that the hubbub is over and the decision has been made by the Boys Scouts of America (BSA), let’s take a look at what has really changed.

BSA, just like the Catholic church, has always wel-comed members of all creeds and ethnicities. They still do and have not wavered from their Oath and Law. They have made it clear that they will not discriminate against a youth based on sexual orientation or preference alone with this most recent change to their membership standard.

The Catholic Council of Bishops, the National Catholic Committee on Scouting and the Rockford Diocese have all said they will continue to support Scouting at present and will review the changes before the effective date of January 1, 2014. The Knights of Columbus Supreme Council has not had any comment at this time concerning the issue.

The local action takenby our sister parish in Crystal Lake do not reflect the overall current consensus of the above named groups.

Our Council has expressed their continued support for Cub Scout Pack 127 and Boy Scout Troop 127 at our last business meeting. We, like all the others, will care-

fully have to watch, listen and deter-mine what the best course of action is as we move forward toward the January 1st date.

Speaking as a Scout leader, I intend to continue with Scouting and sup-port the wonderful tenets the pro-gram brings to so many young men who have an opportunity to become strong upstanding citizens for our country. Thank you for your contin-ued support and may God bless you and your families.

Take A Deep Breath... Dan O’Connell

Here it is for 2013. The only raffle sponsored by the Illinois State Council and you too can participate. Tickets are avail-able now for the drawing to be held on December 7, 2013. (There was a misprint on the tickets that state January 11, 2014 but that is incorrect.)

Each book has 15 tickets and the cost is $1.00 per ticket. The prizes are amazing!!

1st prize - $10,000 2nd prize - $2,500 3rd – 6th prizes - $1,000 7th – 10th prizes - $500 11th – 15th prizes - $200 16th – 20th prizes - $100

If everyone buys just one book, we will sell out. I don’t think you want to miss out on this opportunity. Where else can you invest a buck and have the potential of a 10,000 times return on your worthwhile investment (sorry Dave Mazurk).

The raffle goes to support our seminarians or brothers enter-ing a major or minor seminary or young ladies entering a

convent. They all have expenses and this will help. The Council keeps $9.00 of every book sold and $6.00 goes to the State Council. What a great way to fund our seminarian support program.

If you would like tickets now, contact Dan O’Connell at 815-356-1413 and they will be at all upcomingmeetings. A mailing will be forthcoming as well so if you want to save your Council the postage, please see me. Let’s sell this thing out. Buy early and often!!

Knowing that it’s late, here is the outcome of our December OSOR. This year’s drive was better than last yeat. Thanks to Monsignor Hermes for allowing the parish to participate with the Knights. Items collected for troops was increased and monies to help ship troop packages was up. $25 for shipping. Letters to the troops from the parish, kids and many others help break the loneliness. In this coming year, it would be nice to have many more of these letters for our troops.

God bless you all! Thanks again!Steve Bright

April’s last weekend finished PADS dinners for this season. A heart-felt thanks to all of you: members, fami-lies, and all who made this happen. YOU DID GOOD! In my absence, John Orso came through. Thanks, John, you’re the best co-chair. Thanks again to all for making this possible.Steve Bright
