RA 10533 “Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013”
This act is a response to the foraging call of the need for a nationally responsive and globally competitive Filipinos starting with educational reforms. [ASEAN INTEGRATION]
It focuses on meeting the standards of education globally in terms of length and alignment of competencies needed by the industries.
WHAT IS K-12?
The K-12 program covers kindergarten and 12 years of Basic Education.

KINDERGARTEN Ages 5 (Pre-Elementary)There is no formal education for kindergarten students but areas will concentrate on the development of the following:
ELEMENTARY
Ages 6 (Grades 1-6)
1.Mother-Tongue Based multilingual Education (MTB-MLE)Use of child’s primary medium as instruction for grade 1-3. Gradual introduction of Filipino and English for grades 4-6 will follow.
2. Mother Tongue will be an additional subject from gr. 1-3.
ELEMENTARY
Ages 6 (Grades 1-6)
3. MAPEH will be offered starting Grade 14. Spiral Approach of curriculum is implied.
*BEC 2002 Standard subjects will still prevail however Science will be offered on Grade 3.
SECONDARY EDUCATIONJunior High School
Ages 12 (Grades 7-10)
1. Spiral progression curriculum wherein learning is a process of building upon previously learned knowledge.
2. Career pathways optional course that student select from a number of choices.

3. TLE course will be exploratory for grades 7-8, while specialized for grades 9-10. (*COC’s and NC I/II certifications).

Ages 16 (Grades 11-12) 1. A total of 31 subjects to be taken with 80 hrs each per semester.

2. The student can go on different tracks he/she opted to take. As default with all the tracks general courses are embedded.

What’s more in K-12?
1. DepED – CHED –TESDA collaboration of the three to make strategies that will ensure smooth transition.
2. Career Guidance and Counseling Advocacy. Conduct of career advocacy activities to secondary level students. [Not withstanding RA. 9258]
3. E-GASTPE Expansion of Beneficiaries. RA. 8545 shall be extended to qualified students enrolled in Basic Education.

1. Decongested study loads and ensures applicability and retention of learning (Spiral Approach)
2. National certifications of skills (NC 1 and NC II) for fast employment
3. Better preparation for Higher Education (21st Century Skills
4. Learner Centered, responsive, relevant and context based curriculum

5. Global Recognition of academic degrees in the Philippines
6. Economic and financial development opportunities for Filipinos
ISSUES and CONCERNS
1. Readiness of the government to fund and implement K-12 nationwide (logistic, human resources and stability)
2. Adequacy of competencies parallel to the demands of K-12 education (Teachers in particular)
3. Massive lay-offs for Professors in HEI’s for the full implementation years of grade 11 and 12.
RECOMMENDATION1. Engagement of all the stakeholders
affected in the implementation of the program. (parents, teachers etc)
2. Continuous trainings and seminars about K-12.
3. Yearly review of policy makers and implementers regarding the status of the under-going program.
4. Research and Evidenced based practices must be utilized.
