Chairman’s Corner– Bob Swanson, Chairman of the Board

As we move into the summer months

here at the Club, it is exciting to see the work

taking place on the TPC golf course. With

the tremendous job that was completed on

our Cottonwood Valley course, and the fact that we have a great

PGA Pro and golf course architect in D.A. Weibring, I am very anx-

ious to see the final product.

Hopefully you are enjoying all the fun summer activities available

to us as members of the Sports Club. We have a number of tradi-

tions that have been established over the years, but I can’t think of

one more exciting than Hal Logan’s Famous Fish Fry, celebrating

the 4th of July. From the golf pro’s stimulating putting contest, to a

dunking booth, kids games and the dazzling fireworks display that

culminates the evening, it is one of the great events that our club

hosts. Make your reservations now, for what is guaranteed to be a

fun family night.

I would also like to invite you to our member cocktail parties

and member dinners. They have become very well attended and

are a wonderful way to meet other members. Look for one in the

monthly calendars at the back of this Sportsline, or in the Weekly

Watch, which you should receive via e-mail every Wednesday.

Wherever your itinerary takes you this summer, please travel

safely. It is nice to know that when returning, you have your very

own wonderful resort and club to make you feel as though you

are still on vacation!

GolfAn Earnest Opinion – Paul Earnest, Director of Golf

The scaffolding is coming down, marking the end of another EDSByron Nelson Championship. A great finish produced a hometownfavorite who is one of thebest competitors I have

ever played with – and against. I have very fondmemories of a great match that Scott Verplankand I played at The Hills of Lakeway in the TransMiss Amateur. Although a hard-fought battle onmy part against the #1 ranked amateur, he defi-nitely added to my education in the game. I amthrilled that Scott’s name will forever be presentat the Nelson statue. Perhaps the interesting side-note is that it will be the only event partiallyplayed on the newly renovated Cottonwood Valleycourse. I am thrilled that the PGA TOUR starsgave it one more try. Cottonwood Valley morethan held its own... frankly, it won this year. A higher stroke average than its sister course, one of thetoughest starting holes ever played on Tour, and ravereviews about both design work and conditioning fromall that played should give us a great sense of pride. Wewelcome the day that Cottonwood Valley is retired fromthe Championship, as this will give us more control andthe ability to produce a quality course for the membershipon a year-round basis. Although they speak highly of thecourse, the PGA TOUR players are happy to prepare foronly one course. We have a rich 25-year history with thePGA TOUR, and we eagerly anticipate the next chapterthat will begin in 2008 on a brand new generation course.

Your Seasonal Golf Tip… – Tim Cusick, Director of Golf Instruction

The newly renovated greens on Cottonwood Valley are pristine!

They’re firm, true and roll fantasticly. These conditions allow you a

better chance to make more putts, assuming you have the proper

speed. The speed is the most important component of a putt. It will

dictate the amount of break that you play. In most cases, putting is a losing proposition.

Even in a good putting round, you’ll typically miss more putts than you make. Therefore,

concentrate more on the pace of your stroke and the speed of the putt. By following this

plan, you’ll lag the ball closer to the hole and minimize your 3-putts.

From the GreenJohn P. Cunningham, CGCS, Director of Golf CourseOperations and Landscaping

During the next few months, while we renovate the TPC course, we

will work hard to continue with improvements on Cottonwood Valley.

One of the first orders of business will be to transition from an over-

seeded playing surface back to bermuda grass. We will lower the mowing height, spray a post

emergent herbicide and fertilize. Lowering the mowing height allows sunlight to enter the

turf canopy which encourages the bermuda grass growth. The herbicide will affect the over-

seed grass, weakening it so it will expire. We need to convert the playing surfaces back to

bermuda grass as soon as possible to give the turf as much time to regain its health before

we overseed in the fall. Forcing the overseeding out will speed the recovery process and

increase the quality of the playing conditions during the summer months. We are in the

process of taking soil and tissue samples to properly identify the proper fertility requirements

for our turfgrass conditions.

We are also retrofitting the irrigation

sprinkler heads to a single wire system.

This will allow us to control all heads

individually, which will allow us to bet-

ter monitor the amount of water

applied to specific areas of the golf

course. This will lead to more consis-

tent playing conditions.

We are aerifying, verticutting, leveling

and topdressing tees and fairways this

summer. This work is carried out when

the bermuda grass is most active and

can recover. The greens will be aerified

with two to three small, hollow-core aer-

ifications. This allows for proper water

infiltration and thatch prevention.

Many improvements have been

made on Cottonwood Valley over the

past eight months, but we are not fin-

ished. We are working hard this sum-

mer to continue the improvements

necessary to make Cottonwood Valley

absolutely great!!TPC No. 18 – proposed rendering

Sports Shorts... – Robin Scott, Director of SportsWe’ve had a busy spring with club championships in Tennis and

Squash. Often it is the “Open” division champions who receive the

most recognition - Vince Menard and Katie Buford in tennis, and

Bret Zimmerman in Squash. But let's hear it for the other division-

al champions - Brett Johnson, Queenee Syre, Ben Panchasarp,

Kathy Dorris in Tennis and Ricardo Brauer, Tom Hook and Howard

Stein in Squash. The participants in these divisions are the back-

bone of the championships and make the event feel like a real tournament.

Congratulations again to all of our champions and to everyone who participated.

This spring TCD season, we enjoyed record participation with 8 ladies teams, and 3

mixed doubles teams. In total, there were over 170 members on Sports Club TCD team

rosters. Over and above the competitive aspect of TCD, our Sports Club teams consistently

receive highly favorable comments from visiting teams regarding fair play, sportsmanship

and friendliness. It is this spirit that helps make The Sports Club a very special place.

Thanks to all of the TCD participants for representing our club in such a positive manner.

Now that spring is over and hot summer temperatures are upon us, let us turn our

attention to Summerfest Summer Camps. At this time of year, our professional staff is

dedicated to providing the best possible sports camp experience for kids of all ages.

This year we are offering Tennis, Golf, Fitness, and “Swing, Serve and Splash” camps,

May 29 – August 17. Plus, there is Swim Team and Swim Lessons throughout June and

July. New this year is the “Sports Skills Camp,” where the kids will focus on learning the

fundamentals of kicking, throwing, dribbling, agility and much more.

And don’t forget that adults deserve a break from kids too...so enjoy the “Kids Night In”

program on Friday and Saturday nights throughout the summer. Think date night for

mom and dad!!

Australia: Beyond Shiraz - James Tidwell, Four Seasons Sommelier

Australia has earned a reputation for producing some of the world’sbest syrah (known as “shiraz” there). However, this is not the only wineproduced there. Australia is the same size as the United States and pro-duces at least as many different types of wine.

Excellent pinot noir is grown in the Yarra Valley, on Mornington Peninsula, and on the islandof Tasmania. Producers to look for include Kooyong, Giant Steps and Coldstream Hills.Numerous producers offer ageworthy chardonnay, including Cullen, Giaconda, and LeeuwinEstate (with their “Art Series”). Grenache, a traditional grape of Spain and the Rhône Valley, getsa New World interpretation from Betts & Scholl, D’Arenberg and Mitolo.

For the best white wine from Australia, look to Riesling. The wines are dry, un-oaked, concen-trated and crisp, making them perfect partners with today’s cuisine. Riesling from Eden Valleyand Clare Valley produces some of the most exciting wines of Australia. A few top-flight produc-ers are Grossett, Betts & Scholl, Henschke and Mt. Horrocks. Further afield, Leeuwin Estate,D’Arenberg, and Jasper Hill make excellent examples.

If these wines don’t satisfy your curiosity, then try semillon, viognier, mourvedre, verdelho, sauvignon blanc, marsanne, sangiovese, or tempranillo. And, the standby reds, merlot and caber-net sauvignon, can be found in abundance.

Like the United States, Australia has something for everyone. The wines are high quality with arange of styles and prices available. So, venture “down under” for your next wine discovery.
