Cool! I’ll tell you what’s cool: ½ of the Board of Governors power couple, Bob Shema. Bob’s cool, and once again, he’s given his valuable time to create yet another unique Four Seasons Cool October insignia.

Plus, he uses the word “cool” all the time in his language, so maybe I could be as cool as Bob if I started using that word more often, but I wouldn’t be willing to put highlights in my hair to keep pace with him.

As of this writing in mid-summer, the weather is definitely not cool (3rd hottest June on record and over 100 degrees nearly every day thus far in July), but because of the new water cooling system at the Member’s pool, it was cool to see and feel the water temperatures drop an astounding 20 degrees! People are actually commenting that it was too cool, so we raised it 5 degrees. How about that?

Of course, as one might have surmised from my overuse of the word “cool” in this Corner, one of the coolest things we do as a club is give our unwavering support to the Four Seasons Resort and Club’s philanthropic effort, Cool October, benefitting the non-profit Baylor Medical Center in Irving. Our efforts have made us the largest contributor in the hospital’s history, with well over $2M donated since its inception. To help promote this year’s event, Marsha Tokerud (Board of Governors Cool October Chair) and Angela Enright (Four Seasons Director of Public Relations and Chairman of the BMCI Hospital Board) did something pretty cool this summer: They invited the Senior Radiation Oncologist at Baylor Irving, Dr. Anand Shivnani, to speak at a club-catered event for the Board, Operating Committees, and past Cool October donors. It was impossible to listen to Dr. Shivnani speak on the new image-guided radiation technology (our latest donation) fitted for the Linear Accelerator (which we helped purchase a few years ago), without feeling a tremendous sense of pride. This technology has the ability to target cancerous cells without damaging healthy cells – and utilizes much less of the patient’s time for treatment! In addition, we’ve also played a role in Baylor Irving adding a staff counselor to help patients work through the details and stress of their cancer care. Clearly, our fundraising efforts are truly making a difference right in our own backyard.

So PLEASE get involved! There are many ways to contribute: The respective marathons of Paul Earnest (golf ), Robin Scott (tennis), and Michelle Scannell (fitness); the Fun Run, 5K, and/or 10K run; the golf tournament open to corporate sponsorship; donating and bidding on fabulous items during the online auction; and by volunteering for the various Cool October activities.

We are all blessed to belong to a club of this stature, and Cool October is the kindest, most selfless gesture we offer at the Four Seasons Resort and Club. Nothing is cooler than that.

Sincerely yours,

3

I t struck me in almost a humorous sort of way when I finally broke down two weeks

ago and signed up for Twitter. It was really a multi-step, “self awareness kicking and

screaming” process where I came to the realization that I was way behind the curve. I

now needed an even “smarter phone” than I have had the last many years, and had to learn about the

latest and greatest apps that will make my life easier – both professionally and personally. This was a big step for a guy who, when I started

working here, used good old-fashioned file folders, and our assistants were the only ones who had computers. Once we did get computers it

seemed like we were stuck in the DOS world…forever. Needless to say, ours is not the most tech-savvy industry in the world, but it has all

come rushing to us at full speed.

In the last year and in our never-ending quest to maximize our communications to our membership, the Club has ventured into the world

of web videos, QR codes and has added a Club Twitter account to the already established and active ones at the hotel. I have to admit, the

whole thing was not as hard as I thought it would be and there definitely is something to be said to having so much real-time information at

your fingertips at all times. For those information junkies out there, we would love for you to be part of this as we evolve in the latest and

greatest ways to communicate!

From the Club ManagerROB COwaN

The Club experience is taken to a new level when shared with family, co-workers or friends, and our Member Referral Program rewards you for introducing others to the Sports Club. Did you know that by referring a new member, you can choose from any of the following options?

We are confident your nearest and dearest will enjoy being a part of our membership just as much as you do. Thank you for being such great ambassadors for the Club. We look forward to meeting our future members!

We are so excited to be on the path to honor our

Paul marks the position of his ball and taps down his marker with

his putter. Rob marks the position of his ball, lifts his ball and walks

to the hole to remove a twig. He walks back and crouches down to

read his putt. He notices that his marker has stuck to his shoe. At

the same time, Paul notices that his marker is missing and has stuck

to the bottom of his putter when he tapped his marker down. Do

Paul and Rob incur any penalties?

A. Paul and Rob each incur a one-stroke penalty

B. Paul incurs a one-stroke penalty and Rob incurs no penalty

C. Rob incurs a one-stroke penalty and Paul incurs no penalty

D. Neither Paul nor Rob incurs a penalty

According to Bernie Loehr, manager for the Rules of Golf at

the United States Golf Association, the answer is C. As Paul’s

movement of his marker was directly attributable to the marking

process, Loehr said, he incurs no penalty (Decision 20-1/6 and Rule

20-1).

Rob incurs a one-stroke penalty because the movement of his

marker was not attributable to the marking process (Decision 20-

1/5.5 and Rule 20-1).

Each player must replace his marker as near as possible to the spot

where it was located before it was moved but not nearer the hole

(Rule 20-3c).

Abe’s rules to play byaBE hERNaNdEzhEad GOLfPROfESSIONaL

A Texas native with a love for the game, Abe Hernandez joined Four Seasons Resort

and Club in June as the Head Golf Professional. He came to us from Royal Oaks

Country Club where he worked for six years perfecting his skills under Randy

Smith, teacher to several PGA TOUR players including Justin Leonard, Gary Woodland, Ryan Palmer

and many others.

Abe brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge of the game, as well as a genuine love

of people, which is evident if you have already had the pleasure of meeting him. In 2008, he was

named the Metro Chapter Assistant Golf Professional of the year and NTPGA Section Assistant Golf

Professional of the Year. Abe received the honor of NTPGA Chapter Assistant Golf Professional of

the Year in 2010.

Originally from Andrews, Texas, Abe attended the University of Texas at the Permian Basin in Odessa.

His hobbies outside of golf include hunting and fishing, which he loves but claims to be horrible at

both. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Stephanie, and they have one “kid” - a dog named

Murphy.

If you haven’t done so already, please give Abe a warm welcome to the Club!

Welcome Abe Hernandez

Now that the summer is behind us, it’s time for our fall aerification. Our bentgrass

greens are put through quite a bit of stress during the summer months and there

is nothing better for stress than a good aerification. This aerification will be a

hollow tine aerification, which means we will pull a core out of the green and back-fill with sand.

Accomplishing a hollow core aerification will help to relieve compaction, increase gas/oxygen

exchange and increase water infiltration. By improving these growing conditions, we will set

up greens for success during the fall months. As the nighttime temperatures begin to drop, the

bentgrass plant will start initiating root growth and the aerification holes will provide a channel for

these roots to grow into.

If you have any questions, concerns or comments please send them my way. I look forward to

hearing from you.

See you on the course…

T aking a proper divot when hitting your irons is a product of a good swing and

impact. Ideally, you’d like to make contact with the ball and ground at the

same time. Hitting the ball first and then the ground is a viable alternative,

but never do you want to hit the ground first then the ball.

Positioning the ball in the center of your stance, swinging the club on plane, turning back and

through in your posture, and having the back of your left hand facing the target at impact are

good keys to live by for proper contact of the ball and ground. The picture of the front edge of

your club striking the ball and ground at the same time is an excellent visual the next time you

head to the range or the golf course.

1) The bottom divot is contacting the ball first then the ground. 2) The middle divot is the correct contact that should be made striking the ball and ground at the same time. 3) The top divot is what to avoid, hitting the ground first then the ball.

Fall Fashion report

MEREdiTH LEMERANd RETAiL diRECTOR

[email protected]

Fashion and fall are like clubs and balls: They are meant for each other and, together, they create a harmonious symphony that

allows a player to shine amidst a backdrop of rich hues that highlight the best in everyone. This season is bolder and brighter, and after the dog days of summer we are ready to

experience a refreshing pep in our step!

Speaking of step, one of the biggest trends hitting the golf scene this season is the footwear frenzy that is taking on a whole new

laidback swagger. For example, the new Ashworth Cardiff to hit the Shop in a hip hue of navy blue looks as effortless as Freddie Couples on a Wednesday Pro-Am. At $120 ($84 for our CLUB 30 members!), this is a great place to start if

you’re considering taking the footwear plunge! The stylish shoe is also available in white, black and brown.

For the ladies, fashion is a state of mind, and we all know that women have the right to change their minds! No fear, ladies,

Nike brings to us the Convert Skort – a wrap skort that can be reversed from a fashion bright to a solid basic. The skirt also detaches and a stylish short remains

underneath. Tie on the adorable print belt to complete the ensemble, whichever way suits you. Your options don’t end there, either. The Reversible Filled Vest allows for quick wardrobe changes, and the Convertible long-sleeve top goes from a sassy snap-mock to a structured polo collar. Throw a pair of their Light

Tight Leggings in your bag for those crisp fall mornings, and the possibilities are endless!

This summer was a hot one, both inside and out! The Club kicked off the season with the Jazz in June Member Cocktail, where guests enjoyed live music from the Joe Ruggiero Trio. The 18th Annual Independence Day Celebration was a smashing success, and Summerfest Camps were as busy as ever. To kick off Cool October, our Board of Governors and Operating Committees gathered for a presentation from Dr. Anand Shivnani, senior radiation oncologist with Baylor Irving.

A Look Back at Summer at the Club

Page 11: Sportsline - Fall Issue 2011

As we are soon approaching Cool October, it is very important to be aware of cancer prevention and the many ways we can beat this terrible disease. As

researchers continue to wage war against cancer, many have begun to focus on what could be the most promising ammunition to date: DIET. One of the easiest, least expensive and effective ways to promote good health is to embrace healthy foods.

Here are six anti-cancer foods to give your diet the nutrients it deserves:1. Broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower have a chemical component

called indole-3-carbinol that can combat breast cancer by converting a cancer-promoting estrogen into a more protective variety.

2. Carrots contain a lot of beta-carotene, which may help reduce a wide range of cancers including lung, mouth, throat, stomach, intestine, bladder, prostate and breast.

3. Kale has indoles, nitrogen compounds which may help stop the conversion of certain lesions to cancerous cells in estrogen-sensitive issues.

4. Mushrooms – shiitake, maitake, reishi, Agaricus blazei Murill and Coriolus Versicolor – appear to help the body fight cancer and build the immune system.

5. Seaweed and other sea vegetables contain beta-carotene, protein, Vitamin B12, fiber and chlorophyll, as well as chlorophylones – important fatty acids that may help in the fight against breast cancer.

6. Sweet potatoes contain many anti-cancer properties including beta-carotene, which may protect DNA in the cell nucleus from cancer-causing chemicals outside the nuclear membrane.

The list continues with fruits such as avocado, grapefruit, figs, grapes, oranges, papayas, raspberries, flax seeds and Brazil nuts.

The American Cancer Society estimates that 1/3 of all American cancer deaths may be food related. The conclusion is really pretty simple: kick cancer-loving food to the curb and embrace a healthier diet.

If you have any questions or are in need of nutritional counseling, please contact Erin at [email protected].

Great doubles players hit the ball up the middle the majority of the time. This concept helps to control the point and sets up points to be ended in a quick

manner.

1. When returning the serve, think about hitting the ball up the middle, as this is the lowest part of the net, and keeps your opponent from hitting to angles.

2. Serve down the middle, as it allows your partner a better opportunity to poach and finish the point! Again, fewer angles can be created by your opponents.

3. When your opponents are exceptional at creating angles, you should serve right at your opponent’s body, minimizing their space and opportunity to create an angle.

4. When your opponents are strong from the baseline, you should rally up the middle, then attack up the middle to maintain control of the point.

Beat the middle up, and your success of controlling the point will greatly improve. Good luck on the court and have fun!

H ard to believe summer is officially over. It just seems like yesterday when plans were put in place for our Summerfest programs. I would like to thank all of the kids who participated in our summer camps this year. Yes…it was hot…

but the camps were very well attended, the kids had tons of fun, and our professional staff made several comments that the kids in camp this year were the best-behaved group ever! Of course, we would not have camps without the support of the parents, so a big thanks to all of the parents who trusted their little ones with us over the summer.

Without time to take a breath, we shift to the fall…one of our favorite times of the year at the Club. Beyond the cooler temperatures (we hope), the Club is alive with activities in all areas. Highlights in the fall this year include the fall Tennis Competitors of Dallas (TCD) season, Racquetball and Squash leagues, Tennis Doubles Club Championships, after school Junior Tennis Program and of course our Cool October fundraising initiatives.

We appreciate every one of our members for your support for our programs, activities, services and charitable efforts.

Have a great fall season at the Club!
