Prior to joining the Center, Parke spent more than eight years working in Tennessee, where he worked for Developmental Disability Management Services based in Collierville, and for the State of Tennessee at the Arlington Developmental Center. He currently serves as President of the Rotary Club of Senatobia, and Parke is very active in his church and he coaches various youth sports teams. Leading a remotely located nonprofit organization that serves clients from across the country, Parke will share with us the unique challenges and opportunities he and his team experience as they work to raise funds and maintain the Center’s programs. Funding from individuals, foundations, events, and a client-staffed garden center and packaging operation provides for the needs of the residents. Like most of the nonprofits for which we work, The Baddour Center endeavors to cultivate support in unique ways, while dealing with the realities of a weak economy and ever-increasing competition for the charitable dollar.

According to a report recently released by AFP International, salaries for fundraising professionals are on the rise. That’s great news. And not just because it helps your own paycheck, but for what it means for the profession and our organizations. As Andrew Watt, FInstF, president and CEO of AFP notes, this suggests that giving is returning to pre-recession levels. It also suggests that many nonprofit organizations feel more positively about where the future will take them. Such news also indicates that many organizational leaders realize how vital fundraising professionals are to the sustainability of the organization. The report also states that those individuals with CFRE credentials earn more. What more incentive do you need to register for the CFRE review course this summer? Take advantage of your membership benefits and download the full report – in time for your next annual review.

On the flip side, I would suggest most of you don’t work in fundraising for the paycheck anyway. Sure, it’s nice to be able to put food on the table and buy that cute pair of shoes (or tickets to the Grizzlies). But, more importantly, we work in our field because of the passion we have for our organization and its mission. That is why we are successful at it and that is why we return every day. We are not professional fundraisers so we can line out pockets with riches. Instead, it is our hearts that are lined with riches as we serve those in need, open up the arts to the community, and ensure that the future is bright. You are making the world a better place to be and no salary could match the value of that.

It Makes Sense to Give to AFP Foundation for PhilanthropyFundraisers do more than just raise money—we make positive change happen! Without fundraising, donors and charities wouldn’t be able to transform communities and improve the quality of life for everyone. Fundraising increases the capacity of nonprofit or-ganizations to create impact, and the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy is proud to play an important role in that process. Through education, training, ethical practices, research, networking, collaboration and community building, we help fundraisers raise more money to increase their organizations’ capacity. Since our formation in 1960, AFP has helped fundraisers generate more than $1 trillion in gifts and donations, and AFP members raise more than $100 billion every year for charitable causes around the world.

We are excited that AFP has announced three new membership types. We believe that these changes will provide greater opportunity for Memphis area professionals to join AFP, experience the many benefits of membership in AFP and save while doing so.

For more information, visit the AFP national website at www.afpnet.org and click on the top left tab, Join AFP.

Young Professional Membership

Open to individuals, 30 years old or younger, who hold some degree of responsibility directly for fundraising, are compensated for their services and are employed, or have been employed by an organization that provides benefits to society. Membership fee is $75.00 and includes chapter dues.

AFP Nonprofit Organizational Membership – Small Organizations Open to nonprofit organizations who can answer yes to all the following criteria:

1. An operating budget of less than $1,000,000, 2. A fundraising department with less than two (2) Full time equivalent (FTE) staff, 3. Individually incorporated or otherwise organized as a separate entity in the laws of the

specific country; and 4. Not affiliated with a larger institution supporting their operations.

The organization will designate one fundraising professional to receive the benefits offered in this membership category. The membership may be transferred to another individual if the original member leaves the organization. Limit one membership per organization. The $150.00 includes chapter dues.

AFP Nonprofit Organizational Membership – Large Organizations AFP’s Nonprofit Organizational Memberships will provide long-term value, promote philanthropy and charitable giving and bring public recognition of an organization’s commitment to foster ethical standards and professionalism in fundraising. To be eligible for the large organization discounted membership rates, an organization needs eight (8) or more fundraising professionals. For more information about how a large organization can qualify and experience reduced membership costs, please talk directly with Jennifer Watkins, AFP Membership Representative at [email protected] or 800-666-3863 to learn how this membership type applies directly to your organization.
