Spinning Like a Top: 8 Secrets to Well-Oiled Fundraising Operations

Fundraisers must balance dozens of daily priorities. Operational issues often require more than their fair share of attention, which can diminish time with donors. How can a busy fundraiser get operational issues under control? This session will guide fundraisers toward the most efficient strategies to manage data, technology, reporting, and business processes. These issues cannot be ignored, but fundraisers will learn effective assessment and solution techniques during this session. Participants can expect a post-session road map for resolving operations issues that will allow a quick return to donors and dollars.

Presenter: Christopher M. Cannon, CFRE, Managing Associate with Bentz Whaley FlessnerLocation: U of M Alumni Center

In addition, he’s written a number of articles for nonprofit magazines and journals and frequently speaks at AFP conferences.

The theme for the conference is Fundraising for All Seasons. In addition to Michael, other topics for the conference include grant writing, cause-related marketing, and a session with local funders. The conference will be held at the University Center on the University of Memphis campus. Early bird conference registration is $99, ending June 30. Afterwards, it is $119 for members and $139 for non-members. Scholarships will also be available for fundraising professionals and nonprofit students. Look for registration materials soon.

20 Questions with Jennifer Hust

Each newsletter we like to get to know one of our members a little better through a series of 20 questions. This month, Jennifer Hust shares a few details on both a personal and professional level.

1. Full name (people know you as)? Jennifer Hust

2. Date & place of birth? August 30 in Seoul, Korea

3. How long have you lived in the area? Just over one year and love it

4. Occupation? Seeking!

5. Who was your most influential role model? My parents. They were both in the Army for 20+years and taught me everything I

know about serving the greater good, respecting others, and always doing the right thing.

6. Favorite place to go, favorite trip, hike, etc.? I love book stores. Burke’s Books and the Booksellers at Laurelwood could

occupy me for hours upon hours.

7. Favorite local business? I love to go to the zoo. The Memphis Zoo is spectacular and affordable. It’s the perfect place to

get some fresh air, stretch your legs, and invest in a local attraction.

8. Favorite food? Bari Ristorante is my favorite local restaurant right now. I can’t get enough of that spaghetti carbonara.

9. Favorite book? I couldn’t possibly list just one. Can I list 3? Cutting for Stone, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, and All

Over but the Shoutin’

10. Favorite movie? I love old musicals. Singing’ in the Rain never gets old.

11. What do you waste your money on? Shoes...always more shoes.

12. What is the craziest & most adventurous thing you have done? I did a 10 hour, 14 mile, 2500ft elevation gain hike to the

top of a mountain in the Canadian Rockies in Banff, Canada last summer to look for fossils. That was pretty insane.

13. What is your fondest memory? Three week safari in Kenya and Tanzania, Africa with my parents. The stars were amazing

from there.

14. If you could change one thing about Memphis what would it be? I wish more people were aware of the poverty that exists

in this city.

15. What do you think makes Memphis a good place to live? The food is delicious, and the music is outstanding. Throw in

some Southern hospitality and a view of the river, and you can’t get any better.

16. Tell me about one hidden Memphis treasure others should know about? Sun Studios. It’s not exactly hidden, but I hate to

hear native Memphians say they’ve never been. I’ve been 5 times and love it every time. Plus, they make a mean milk

shake.

17. What do you do to de-stress? I love to cook for other people. It is so satisfying to immerse my brain into something that will

delight someone else.

18. If you were to try any other profession for one day, what would it be? Fashion designer.

19. What is one fundraising best practice you can share with AFP membership? Ask the right person at the right time in the right

way.

20. Complete this sentence: Jennifer is excited to attend her first AFP International Conference in Vancouver, thanks to the AFP scholarships!
