PASTORAL MESSAGEDear Friends,

Before Kevin left he asked me to write to you to explain the procedure ofseeking another minister. Since Kevin has left, our church is nowdeclared to ‘be in a vacancy.’

The first step is that we will be allocated an Interim Moderator/Ministerwhose job is to provide some pastoral oversight and to guide the churchthrough the process of ‘calling’ a minister. The interimmoderator/minister in our case is most likely to be a lay preacher. We arehoping that our present joint pastorate with Digbeth will remain and thatboth churches can call a minister together.

Now that the church has been declared ‘in a vacancy;’ Knowle’s PastorateProfile, which we have been working on and completed incorporating theamendments suggested at the January Church Meeting has been submittedto the Synod office. The next step will be for both Knowle and Digbethto have a scoping visit and agree to continue as a joint pastorate. The twopastorate profiles are then combined and a short one page summary will goon the URC website. The full joint pastorate profile for both churches isavailable for any interested minister.

This will enable ministers who are seeking new pastorates to be able todecide whether God is calling them to minister to us and if a minister feelsthat this is the case an application will be made and we will receive a C.V.for the perusal of the Elders. If the Elders feel that this is the right personthen the minister will be asked ‘to preach with a view.’ This enables themembers and congregation to introduce themselves to the prospectiveminister.

After this a church meeting is held and members’ views are sought and avote may be taken to call this minister.

This is a very simplified outline of the process and the rules only allow oneapplicant at a time to be considered.

‘To him who by means of his power working in us is able to do so muchmore than we can ever ask for, or even think of: To God be the glory in thechurch and in Christ Jesus for all time, for ever and ever! Amen.’

(Ephesians3:v. 20-21)

The Gideon's StoryYears ago, a boy promised his dying mother, that he would read a portionof the Bible every day for the rest of his life. He kept his word. One night, while staying in a hotel, he met another man reading his Bible, he foundout that the man was also a Christian, they soon became friends.

In 1899 with another friend, they formed an association for ChristianBusinessmen whose purpose was to spread and share the good news ofwhat God did for us. This association is called The Gideon's International.

The name comes from a person who lived in Israel during old Testamenttimes, Gideon miraculously won a battle with another country with anarmy of only 300 compared with 135,000 on the enemy side, simply byobeying God and using clay jars with a lamp inside and trumpets, Judgeschapters 6 & 7 This name is used because, in the same way that God usedGideon with only a few hundred people to claim victory against impossibleodds, The Gideon's seemed to have an impossible task in front of them.Like Gideon they knew that with God's help they could succeed. Theassociation has now grown world wide to thousands of men and womenwho place Bibles where people are likely to read them, often at a time ofneed. They also place Bibles in schools, hotels and prisons. The Gideon'slogo is a jar with a flaming torch like Gideon used in his night attack, setagainst a dark blue background and surrounded by a gold circle whichrepresents a Trumpet.

Hawking after DawkinFor some unknown reason the fight against religion in general andChristianity in particular is being fought by people who considerthemselves scientists. On May 16th, Hawking argued:

“there is nothing beyond the moment when the brain dies....”"I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when itscomponents fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken downcomputers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark,".

A balanced answer to this was given by P. Wyatt, in the Mail on Sunday:Hawking’s aggressive atheism is not only discourteous to believers, but illogical…..Oscar Wilde, pondering Christianity, thought theonly sensible position an intelligent person could adopt was that ofan agnostic. Just because half of the world believes something istrue doesn’t make it true, but nor does Hawking saying its untruemake it a lie. There is as little proof of no after life as there is ofexistence beyond the grave. (May 22, Review p5)-

Personally, I find my faith in God increasing the more I ponder the wonderof the universe and life. Are we really no more than a bag of chemicals.Does anyone really think they are just a complex robot? Graham Tall

What is a Dad?A dad is a person you can always rely upon to be strong. A dad is strengthand steadiness. Like a sturdy oak he stands, sheltering his growing familyfrom the storms and adverse winds of life. A dad is the person who alwaysknows that time is a great leveller. He has the patience, born of experience, that takes the long view and sees the sun shining beyond the present storm.

A dad is the person you go to when you know you will get a straightanswer. He never glosses things over or coats them with sugar, but willalways tell you the facts. A dad is a person who always has a sage bit ofwit or wisdom for any situation, drawn from the wealth of his experienceand acquaintance. A dad is the person who can turn a seeming calamityinto a smile by turning the light side up. A dad is the person who earns anddeserves the title “head of house”. It is his judgement and foresight thatsafely steers the home ship through the years. A dad is a person who talksless about love than he shows it. His love is always there, evident in thedust in his face when he comes home at night, the sweat on his brow, andthe strong hands that are continually working for his family. A dad is theperson who sets the example his children most want to emulate. Hisindustry, devotion and care are the heritage his sons and daughters carrywith them throughout their lives. A dad is the reason that sons are proud tohave sons who will carry the name he has blessed.

(Whilst I might like to think the above is a valid representation, I have toadmit neither my wife nor children would agree. Graham Tall)

From Children about Dad’s“I’m sure my Dad’s beard has grown into his ears, because he neverlistens to what I say. My Mum agrees”“My dad says we brighten up the home, because we always leave the lightson”“My dad says Father Christmas gets into our house through a hole in hiswallet”“My dad reads to me till HE falls asleep”“No matter how sound asleep my dad is, he always wakes up if you try tosteal the remote control from him”8 Happy Father’s Day to all Dad’s wherever you are.

Three Fifth’sDuring the 2009 Proms Season the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra ofVenezuela was something of a sensation. Youth orchestras all play withverve and enthusiasm, but the S.B.Y.O,V. also displays consummatemusicianship and a feeling for the music which sets them apart. But this isnot a privileged group nurtured in the rarefied atmosphere of academiccalm; it is composed of graduates of the Sistema, which provides theinstruments, the training and the chance to play in a local youth orchestraas an alternative to the drugs, alcohol and gang warfare to which they wereotherwise doomed. Even their (very) young conductor, he’s only just intohis thirties, is a Sistema graduate.

The Simon Bolivar Orchestra is very large but it deploys only a fraction ofthe young people of Venezuela who are part of “the most important thinghappening in in classical music anywhere in the world” (Simon Rattle).

But why “Three fifths”? The Simon Bolivar Orchestra record on theD.G.G. Label and, a few months ago, I bought the 5th Symphonies ofBeethoven, Mahier and Tchaikovsky —Francesca da Rimini andBeethoven 7 came as well. If you already have versions of all or any inyour library add these. The quality of the interpretations and the sheerenthusiasm of the players shine through and for sheer pace and attack theyare outstanding. They can play slowly and with great feeling as well — theMahier Adagio is a case in point. I cannot recommend these discs toohighly. DG000289 477 6228, 477 6545 and 477 8022. HYMN by Isaac WattsWatts’ father a Nonconformist imprisoned twice for his religious views.Isaac learned Greek, Latin, and Hebrew under Mr. Pinhorn, Rector of AllSaints, and headmaster of the Grammar School in Southampton. Isaac’staste for verse showed itself in early childhood, and his promise caused alocal doctor and other friends to offer him a university education, assuminghe would be ordained in the Church of England. However, Isaac declinedand instead entered a Nonconformist Academy at Stoke Newington in1690, under the care of Thomas Rowe, pastor of the Independentcongregation at Girdlers’ Hall; Isaac joined this congregation in 1693.Watts preached his first sermon at age 24. In the next three years, hepreached frequently, and in 1702 was ordained as pastor of theIndependent congregation in Mark Lane. At that time he moved into thehouse of a Mr. Hollis in the Minories. His health began to fail the nextyear, and Samuel Price was appointed as his assistant in the ministry. In1712, a fever shattered his constitution, and Price became co-pastor of thecongregation, which had moved to a new chapel in Bury Street. It was atthis time that Isaac became the guest of Sir Thomas Abney. He lived withAbney (and later Abney’s widow) the rest of his life, mainly at Theobaldsin Hertfordshire, then for 13 years at Stoke Newington.

Now to the Lord a noble song!Awake, my soul; awake, my tongue;Hosanna to th’eternal Name,And all His boundless love proclaim

But in His looks a glory stands,The noblest labor of thine hands; The pleasing luster of His eyesOutshines the wonders of the skies

See where it shines in Jesus’ face,The brightest image of His grace;God, in the person of His Son,Has all His mightiest works outdone.

Grace! ‘tis a sweet, a charmingtheme; My thoughts rejoice at Jesus’ Name:Ye angels, dwell upon the sound!Ye heav’ns, reflect it to the ground!

The spacious earth and spreadingfloodProclaim the wise and powerful God;And thy rich glories from afarSparkle in every rolling star.

O may I live to reach the placeWhere he unveils His lovely face!Where all His beauties you behold,And sing His Name to harps of gold!

About The Big Lunch – an idea for the future? The Big Lunch is a very simple idea from the Eden Project, who felt thatsociety is better equipped to tackle the challenges we face when we facethem together. The aim is to get as many people as possible across thewhole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours in a simple act ofcommunity, friendship and fun. This year it’s happening on Sunday 5thJune . A Big Lunch can be anything from a few neighbours gettingtogether in the garden or on the street, to a full blown party with food, music and decoration that quite literally stops the traffic. A record numberof people are expected to take part Since starting in 2009, thousands ofBig Lunches have taken place in all kinds of communities across the UKand the best part of a million people get involved each year. - why don’twe join them?A record number of people right across the country are expected to takepart in 2011.

The Thinking Behind The Big LunchThe Big Lunch is based on a belief that the world can be a better placethrough people working together, with nature, optimism and commonsense.

· We know that when people get together, we become more positiveand start to sort out some serious stuff.

· By simply having some fun with our neighbours on one day in thesummer, we can build new friendships that we can enjoy for therest of the year.

· The Big Lunch is a chance for neighbours from differentgenerations and backgrounds to hear each other out and sharestories, skills and interests. We call this ‘human warming’.

Thank you to Heather, John, Hamish & Harry for a delightful service onyour special Friday in April. Mary and I enjoyed sharing your day. Weenjoyed William & Kate’s day. We had a garden party at Bentley HeathSchool, everyone dressed up. We had “Brides & Grooms”, and Red Whiteand Blue was the appropriate colours in hand. The occasion was alsomarked with a Blue Leather Bookmark showing Prince William’s coat ofarms.

A Journey through the Bible with Tiglath.34. Book of Judges Chapter 1 to Chapter 4.

Sometimes when one is travelling the journey becomes very difficult. One may have to traverse a desert or a range of mountains. It is the samewith our Biblical journey as we attempt to pass through the Book ofJudges. This book covers less than 200 years and is full of conflict andvery often cruelty.

The main feature is the loyalty of the Israelites to God. When they areloyal God supports and helps them. When they forget the true God andworship pagan gods things go terribly wrong. You must read the Bookfor yourselves. preferably with a commentary.

There are, of course, interesting episodes on the way. In Chapter 1 thereis mention of chariots of iron. The Philistines who had invaded Palestinefrom across the Mediterranean had brought with them the knowledge ofhow to use iron to make chariots and weapons. They guarded closely thesecret of how they did this. This knowledge ensured that the Philistineswere superior in battle to the Israelites for very many years.

I have always beenintrigued when the Biblementions visitations to theearth by the ‘Angel of theLord’. Recently we havebeen thinking about hisvisit to the Virgin Mary inthe New Testament. See ifyou can discover how manyvisits he makes in the Bookof Judges. When we thinkof Judges

we think of people well versed in the law. The Judges in the book we aretraversing were men with leadership qualities often quite capable ofgoing into battle at the head of the Israelite troops.

16

Page 17: June and July 2011 - grahamtall

Tiglath ContinuedChapter 4 is very exciting as it shows how much influence women couldhave in those far-off days. The two heroines of the story are Deborah andJael. Deborah was a prophetess and she rallied Barak, the leader of theIsraelite army, so he went into battle against the Philistines. She promisedthat he would be victorious, even though the Philistines had nine-hundredchariots. Chapter 5 verse 21 tells us that ‘The river of Kishon swept themaway’.The leader of the Philistines, named Sisera, fled the scene of battle on foot and tookrefuge in the tent of a friendly tribe namedthe Kenites. The wife of the leader of thistribe was Jael and she invited Sisera to gointo the tent to rest. She even gave him adrink of milk and covered him up. WhenSisera was fast asleep JaeI took a tent nailand hammer, went softly in, and drove thenail into his temples and fastened him to the ground (Chapter 4 verse 21).When Barak the leader of the Israelites arrived Jael was able to show himthe dead body of the man he was chasing nailed to the ground!

The BaptismVery much the worse for wear; a drunk stumbled across an evangelicalmass-baptism by a river. He waded into the water and stood beside thepreacher.

“My son, are you here to find Jesus?” the preacher asked. “I sure am”,said the drunk. The minister dunked him under the water, pulled him backand asked, ”have you found Jesus?” “No, not yet I haven’t” replied thedrunk. So the preacher dunked him again, but for a little while longer.“Have you found Jesus?” he asked.“No I have not, Reverend”. So theminister held him under the water for a full half minute. “By all the saints, have you now found Jesus?” he asked. The drunk spluttered, wiped hiseyes and said “Look, are you sure that this is where he fell in?”
