WEEKENDMASSES(SummerSchedule,suspendeduntilfurthernotice)
Saturday:8:00a.m.,4:30p.m.(anticipated),Sunday:8:30,10:30a.m.,5:00p.m.
Fr.Carl’sCorner We are all aware of the destruction and violence taking place in our neighborhoods, in Chicago and across the nation in response to the horrific death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. I pray for the great power of the Holy Spirit to help peace to prevail over the anger, hurt and hopelessness that many are feeling during these difficult days. The demands for justice must be met with peace, or the chaos will continue. Cardinal Cupich is among the civic and religious leaders who responded to these recent events. I share his letter with you and his call for peace and justice.
The past nights I have watched in great personal pain as the pent-up anger of our people caught fire across our country. I saw the city where I was born, the cities where I have lived, the city I pastor now, catch embers from the city where I was educated and burn. Was I horrified at the violence? Yes. But was I surprised? No. As the saying goes, if you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention. What did we expect when we learned that in Minneapolis, a city often hailed as a model of inclusivity, the price of a black life is a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill? When we added another name to the list of those murdered for being black or for caring about the marginalized? I will not pretend to speak with any authority about the challenges people of color experience in our society. I do not share the fear they put on when they and their children leave their homes every day. I do not know what it means to be “other.” But I know there is a way to fix it. And the fix begins when we stop talking about the proportionality of “their” response and start talking about the proportionality of “ours.” Surely a nation that could put a man in space, his safety assured by the brilliance of black women, can create a fair legal system, equitable education and employment opportunities and ready access to health care. Laws do not solve problems, but they create a system where racism in all its forms is punished and playing fields are leveled. The COVID-19 pandemic has been called a great equalizer. It has been even more a great revealer of societal cancers as deadly as the virus. As others have pointed out, health insecurity kills, and poverty is poison. We can and must make a society that views the soaring of a child’s potential with more joy than the soaring of a rocket. I stand ready to join religious, civic, labor and business leaders in coming together to launch a new effort to bring about recovery and reconciliation in our city. We do not need a study of the causes and effects. Those answers can be found on the shelves of government offices and academic institutions across our burning nation. No, we need to take up the hard work of healing the deep wound that has afflicted our people since the first slave ships docked on this continent. And we need to start today. Cardinal Blase J. Cupich

STEWARDSHIP UPDATE AS WE NEAR THE END OF OUR FISCAL YEAR As we begin the final month of our fiscal year, we continue to navigate through unprecedented times. During the past 12 weeks while we have been unable to gather for weekend Mass, many parishioners have continued to support the parish by dropping off or mailing in their Sunday donations. Still many others have signed up for GiveCentral, our online donation service. Thank You! Thank You! However, we are still significantly below budget. Our Sunday Offertory donations from July 1, 2019 through May 30, 2020 are:
Actual $ 905,089 88.1% Budget $1,027,862 100.0% Shortfall ($122,773) (11.9%)
If you have been waiting to make a donation or to sign up for GiveCentral, now is the time to do it! You will find a link for GiveCentral on the home page of our website, www.stgilesparish.org. Click the tab and be directed to detailed (but easy) instructions and the link. Your generosity and faithfulness are both needed and greatly appreciated as we hope to narrow our budget gap. For questions or assistance please contact Sharon in the Parish Center at 708-383-3430, Ext.420.

Here I Am Keeping Connected @ St Giles
In anticipation of creating a more robust communication system, we are launching “Here I Am – Keeping Connected @ St. Giles” with a simple Google form that we are asking all parishioners to fill out so that we can make sure we have the most current information for all members of our faith family. By answering these few simple questions, it will help us ensure you are receiving important information as it becomes available and allow the parish records to be updated as appropriate. There is also a final question that allows you to put forward anything you’d like held in prayer by all of us in community. Thank you in advance for taking a few minutes to complete this! You can copy this URL to your browser to submit the form:

Dear St. Giles Families, As a faith-based community and one that has worked hard to foster diversity and address issues of racism with our students, it saddens us to see all of the destruction and violence that has taken place since the horrific death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last week. Sadly, this is not the first but most recent event that has sparked an outbreak of violence and destruction in many of our communities. We pray for the great power of the Holy Spirit to help peace to prevail over the anger, hurt, and hopelessness that many are feeling during these difficult days. People must be allowed to express themselves peacefully without fear of the violent response of others. The demands for justice must be met with peace, or the chaos will continue. The challenges before us now need more than prayer, but for individuals to put true leadership that is most needed into action. Cardinal Cupich, on behalf of the Archdiocese, has released a statement which appears in Fr. Carl’s Corner on page 2. Please know that St Giles will continue our work in addressing racism and teaching tolerance through our work with Linal Harris and Jessica Oladapo, who partnered with us this year and will continue in the fall. We know that there is a need for healing, recognition of pain and feelings of others, and call to action on the part of our entire community. We are a community of faith that values everyone and recognizes that we, too, can do better. We would like to share these resources with you to help begin or guide your discussions as a family and encourage everyone to speak to your children about these important issues. We know that we have been dealing with a pandemic of not just a virus, but issues that have been impacting not just St. Giles but all communities for far too long. In prayer and with heavy hearts, Fr. Carl and Meg Bigane

DROP OFF ITEMS AT THE PARISH CENTER
Donations of canned or shelf-stable dry goods and paper products to the covered bins located at the back door on

emptying the bins and bringing the donations inside to prepare them for delivery.
PREPARE A DONATION FOR PICK UP
Are you not able to get your food items to St. Giles, but have things to donate? On Wednesday at 2:00 p.m.,
volunteers run a pick-up route through our community. Email your name and address to
[email protected] and we will add you to our list for the week. Emails need to be received by Wednesday
at 9:00 a.m. to be included that week's pick-up.
FOOD DELIVERY & PICK UP
We need volunteers that can drive to either:

SORT AND SECURE COLLECTED ITEMS OVER THE WEEKEND
Over the weekend, our parish staff is not around to help in transferring collected food items into our pop-up pantry in the teen space. Bins need to be checked in the afternoon &
evening on Saturday and Sunday. To volunteer for this, there is another SignUpGenius link on our webpage www.stgilesparish.org/youth-ministry/love-in-action
Hello St. Giles Family, Cardinal Cupich recently shared our multi-phased plan for reopening churches in the Archdiocese of Chicago, found at https://www.archchicago.org/coronavirus/reopening. Specifically,
• Phase I allows for parishes to reopen for Baptism, Reconciliation, Weddings and Funerals with a limit of 10 attendees.
• Phase IA allows for parishes to reopen for private prayer and adoration with a limit of 10 attendees.
• Phase II allows for reopening for weekday and weekend Masses for larger groups depending on the guidelines from the state and the capacity of the church building.
Volunteers Needed – In order for our parish reopening plan to be implemented, I am asking you to consider being a volunteer. However, to keep everyone safe, we are required to ask only those under the age of 65 to participate in the work of the reopening plan. It is also important that you not have any underlying medical condition, such as diabetes or lung disease, or are undergoing cancer treatment, etc. If you are someone who can volunteer under these circumstances, I urge you to consider assisting me with one of these three reopening teams:
• Set-up team – Sample duties include ensuring that all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration / gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to attendees’ arrival/departure, windows are opened, etc.
• Greeting team – Sample duties include assisting in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church, making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill; directing people to appropriate seating/waiting areas, etc.
• Cleaning team – Sample duties include maintaining and cleaning essential and trafficked areas of the church before and after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if you do not have your own, in addition to approved cleaning / disinfecting supplies.
The Reopening Leadership Team and I will make sure that all volunteers are properly trained. If you are willing and able to volunteer, please choose a team via our SignUp Genius page found linked on our website, stgilesparish.org, or send a message to Alex Ryan at [email protected]. Thank you for your consideration! Yours in Christ,
