LOVE THE ONE I CANNOT KNOW

Now you say, "How shall I proceed to think of God as he is in himself?" To this I can only reply, "I do not know." With this question you bring me into the very darkness and cloud of unknowing that I want you to enter. A man may know completely and ponder thoroughly every created thing and its works, yes, and God’s works, too, but not God himself. Thought cannot comprehend God. And so, I prefer to abandon all I can know, choosing rather to love him whom I cannot know. Though we cannot know him we can love him. By love he may be touched and embraced, never by thought. Of course, we do well at times to ponder God’s majesty or kindness for the insight these meditations may bring. But in the real contemplative work you must set all this aside and cover it over with a cloud of forgetting. Then let your loving desire, gracious and devout, step bravely and joyfully beyond it and reach out to pierce the darkness above. ‘The Cloud of Unknowing’ 14th Century

The Lord said to Moses, “Cut two tablets of stone like the former ones, and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the former tablets, which you broke. Be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai and present yourself there to me, on the top of the mountain. No one shall come up with you, and do not let anyone be seen throughout all the mountain; and do not let flocks or herds graze in front of that mountain.” So Moses cut two tablets of stone like the former ones; and he rose early in the morning and went up on Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tablets of stone. The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name, “The Lord.” The Lord passed before him, and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for the thousandth generation, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, yet by no means clearing the guilty, but visiting the iniquity of the parents upon the children and the children’s children, to the third and the fourth generation.” And Moses quickly bowed his head toward the earth, and worshiped. For the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God!

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Amen.” For the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Homily A brief reflection follows on the reading of the day, all sitting, followed by

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Let us stand and affirm the faith of the Church.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,

† and the life of the world to come. Amen.

I bind unto myself today

I bind unto myself todaythe strong name of the Trinityby invocation of the same, the Three in One, and One in Three.

I bind this day to me forever,by power of faith, Christ's incarnation, his baptism in the Jordan river, his death on cross for my salvation, his bursting from the spiced tomb, his riding up the heavenly way,his coming at the day of doom:I bind unto myself today.

I bind unto myself todaythe power of God to hold and lead, his eye to watch, his might to stay, his ear to hearken to my need, the wisdom of my God to teach, his hand to guide, his shield to ward, the word of God to give me speech, his heavenly host to be my guard.

Prayer of Preparation

Holy God, holy and strong, holy and immortal, give us the bread of everlasting life, and make us branches of the true vine. Amen.

THANKSGIVING PRAYERThe Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give you thanks, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. For with your only-begotten Son and the Holy Spirit you are one God, one Lord. All that you reveal of your glory, the same we believe of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, without any difference or inequality. We, your holy Church, acclaim you, Father of majesty unbounded, your true and only Son, worthy of all worship, and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. Three Persons we adore, one in being and equal in majesty. And therefore we join our voices with angels and archangels, with cherubim and seraphim, we sing for ever of your glory:

The Sanctus Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Father, you are holy indeed, and all creation rightly gives you praise. All life, all holiness comes from you through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, by the working of the Holy Spirit. Great and merciful Father, we ask you: send down your Spirit upon these gifts of bread and wine that they may become for us the † body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the eve of his passion and death, while at table with those he loved. he took bread and gave you thanks, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: 'TAKE THIS AND EAT IT. THIS IS MY BODY WHICH IS GIVEN FOR YOU. DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.' When the supper was over he took the cup, and again giving you thanks, he gave it to his disciples, and said: THIS CUP IS GOD’S NEW COVENANT, SEALED IN MY BLOOD. DRINK FROM IT, ALL OF YOU, TO REMEMBER ME. Great is the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. And so, Father most holy, we celebrate the memory of Christ, your Son, whom you led through suffering and death on the cross to the glory of the resurrection.

Page 13: Trinity Sunday - queensclifflonsdaleanglican.org · Trinity Sunday 7 JUNE 2019 . Holy, holy, holy! Lord God almighty Holy, holy, holy! Lord God almighty, Early in the morning our

Through the power of your Spirit of love include us now and for ever among the members of your Son, whose body and blood we share. Welcome into your kingdom our departed brothers and sisters, and all who have left this world in your friendship. Have mercy on us all; make us worthy to share eternal life with Mary, Saint John, the apostles, and all your saints who have done your will throughout the ages. May we praise you in union with them and give you glory through your Son, Jesus Christ. Through him, with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honour is yours, almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYERAs through Christ we know the Father, let us pray as our Saviour taught us.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD Risen Christ, we pray, draw us more deeply into the mystery of God’s love. Though we are many, we are one body. For we all share in the one bread.

AGNUS DEILamb of God you take away the sin of the world. Have mercy on us. Lamb of God you take away the sin of the world. Have mercy on us. Lamb of God you take away the sin of the world. Grant us your peace.

HOLY COMMUNION This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Happy are those who are called to his supper. Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed. The sacrament of the Eucharist is given with these words
