Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Everything You Always Wanted to Ask about Your Faith but were Afraid to Ask Contributed by Fr. Rey Sarmiento

Question:

“Is it a serious sin to miss Sunday Mass?” Answer: Missing Mass on Sunday is a serious matter (see CCC 2042), but this does not mean it is always a mortal sin. For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must be met: (1) it must be serious (i.e. grave) matter; (2) one must have full knowledge of the action they are doing (or not doing), and (3) one must fully consent in the action – they must freely choose it of their own will. If any of these as-pects is lacking, the sin is merely venial.

Sometimes, circumstances beyond our control prevent us from attending Mass on Sunday. For ex-ample, if your car breaks down on your way to church, you certainly do not intend to miss Mass – so there is no free consent of your will. In such a case, no sin at all would be committed. Similarly, if you are seriously ill, you are not required to pull yourself out of bed and drag yourself to Mass, es-pecially if you sincerely desire to go. Also, if you absolutely need to travel over a weekend (e.g. on a 12-13 hour flight to the Philippines or Vietnam), and cannot go to Mass although you sincerely want to, this too would not be sinful.

It’s a different story, though, if you can get to Mass and you know that missing it is a serious sin, but you deliberately lay around on the couch anyway watching TV. Such behavior would objectively meet the requirements of a mortal sin. But only God can be the judge of this because only He knows if you have full knowledge and consent of the will. In a certain sense, though, God is not the only one who can figure it out if this is a mortal sin. Once you understand the conditions of mortal sin, you should generally be able to figure out what is and is not a mortal sin in your own life! You should know what went on inside your conscience before the action and be able to honestly admit to yourself and to God whether or not you freely choose to do something that you fully understood was seriously wrong. In short, deliberately missing Sunday Mass is objectively a serious matter, but it’s only a mortal sin if one fully knows this and consents this action.

Book: Rediscover Jesus

Chapter 26: The Prayer Process

What is your life’s “Substance,” the “Center”? Our life sup-port is Prayer, and the many ways to pray are suggested in Re-discover Jesus. We grow in prayer and faith, putting life in Christ. Religion without a relationship is a heart without a soul.

We can survive without prayer, but we cannot thrive without it.

PEACEMAKERS Bartolome de Las Casas was a Dominican friar in the 15th cen-tury who served in Cuba and in Mexico. He was one who raised his voice against the violence inflicted on the indigenous peo-ples of Cuba and Mexico by the Spanish conquerors. He began as a simple chaplain, but underwent a dramatic conversion after witnessing such cruelty.

While others claimed that the Indians were a lesser race, he af-firmed their full humanity and entitlement to human rights. But he went further. He argued that in their sufferings they repre-sented the crucified Christ.

Quote: “Christ did not come into the world for gold.”

What can we learn about compassion and justice from Bar-tolome? How can we honor the indigenous people of our own community? Brought to you by the Social Justice Committee
