Appreciation, like wisdom, often takes years to acquire. As we grow older, we are more likely to give our friends and family the true gift of gratitude for the things they’ve done for us and the role they’ve played in our life. Too often, though, we wait too long to express this gratitude. Why wait? (Green, 2011)

We may feel that some things go without saying. We think others already know how we feel and assume that showing gratitude isn’t that big of a deal. If you have taken a moment to intently thank someone or express to someone your appreciativeness, you know that it does mean something. It means something to them and to you. We know that thanking someone is polite and courteous, which is true, but what we don’t always think about is how it benefits us too.

Everyyearduringtheholidayseason, wethinkaboutall the things we’re thankful for and how we can give back to those around us. Rather than focusing on being thankful for a month out of the year, what would happen if we extended the tradition beyond this holiday season? Researchers say we may see improved health. University of California Davis psychologyprofessor,RobertEmmonsstates,“thosewho regularly express gratefulness tend to take better care of themselves and engage in more protective health behaviors like regular exercise, a healthy diet, and regular physical examinations.” Gratitude can

also help us better manage stress. Stress is seen as an indicator for many chronic diseases, including heart disease and cancer. Feelings of thankfulness have tremendous positive value in helping people cope with daily problems, especially stress. Gratitude allows us to feel better, think positively, ease our mind, and have a positive effect on others.

For some, it’s difficult to see the positive in difficult situations and it’s hard to begin to think how to be grateful.Bybroadeningourperspectiveandthinkingmore about the big picture rather than just our own feelings, we can see small things to be thankful for. As we practice seeing the big picture, our gratefulness is clearer.

Psychology professor at the University of Utah, Lisa Aspinwall, shares some tips on how you can start your gratitude journey today.

•Maintainagratitudejournal.Thosewhokeepgratitudejournals feel better about their lives as a whole and maintain greater optimism about the future.

•Createalistofbenefitsinyourlife.Askyourself,“TowhatextentdoItaketheseforgranted?”

•Talktoyourselfinacreative, optimistic, andappreciative manner. This could be simply reflecting on things for which you’re grateful for.

Caregiver Connection

As a caregiver, the list of tasks to complete may seem endless. Your caregiving responsibilities may take up all or most of your day, and possibly your evening and overnight hours as well. You may also continue to work on top of caregiving. Perhaps you are balancing your time and attention toward a spouse and family with caregiving. In the delicate task of dividing your care, love, attention, and effort, it is all too easy to forget the importance of taking care of yourself.

There are many ways to incorporate caring for yourself intoabusy, caregivingday.Herearejustafew:

1. Utilize times when your loved one is resting comfortably to do something for you that is relaxing and enjoyable to you. This may be meditation, journaling, progressive muscle relaxation, reading, or another activity that is just for you.

2. Take care of your own health by visiting your doctor regularly, eating balanced meals, and getting physical activity. This may involve arranging for respite care for your loved one while you attend to some of these tasks.

3. Seek out social activity that is meaningful to you. This might be a coffee date or shopping with a friend, attending a support group regularly, or a weekly game night. Again, this may mean coordinating some respite care for your loved one.

4. Find out about local resources and options for assistance. Talk to a Caregiver Support Coordinator at the Aging & Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin to find out about local caregiver supports, resources, and information. Talk to family members

about times you might need some help or support with respite to see if they have availability.

Some of these suggestions may be more feasible for you than others. Some of them might require arranging respite care, which many caregivers are hesitant to do for a variety of reasons. Allow yourself to consider respite care, whether it is hiring someone to provide care or finding a family member who is willing. Taking some time for yourself can be rejuvenating for you and allow you to function as a better caregiver for your loved one as a well-rested and more relaxed person. If you are tired, stressed, and feeling pulled in a million different directions, your caregiving will reflect that. An hour per week to take care of your health or do something you enjoy will not alleviate all of the stresses in your life, but it may refresh you in a way that makes your day to day caregiving tasks seem more manageable.

In honor of National Caregiver’s Month this November, take a moment to think of one thing you can do for yourself this month. It can be something small and simple. Next week, or perhaps next month, think of something else just for you. Continue this pattern to build more self-care into your caregiving journey, as taking care of yourself is an integral part of caring for your loved one.

What is the NAMI Family Support Group Program?

NAMI Family Support Group is a peer-led support group for family members, caregivers and loved ones of individuals living with mental illness. The hallmark of a NAMI support group is leveraging the collective knowledge and experience of the other participants. It can offer you practical advice on addressing issues related to mental illness and your loved one and gives you the appropriate space to have your personal needs met so that you can provide the best possible care for your family member. The NAMI Family Support Group is a 60-minute session, free of charge. Attendance is optional and confidential.

Northwoods

NAMI Northwoods and dedicated volunteer members and leaders work tirelessly to raise awareness and provide essential education, advocacy and support group programs for people in our community living with mental illness and their loved ones.

“Before coming to the support group, we had never spoken about mental illness to neighbors, friends and often not even to our relatives.”

NAMI Northwoods offers its NAMI Family Support Group on the 2nd Wednesday of the month, beginning September 13th from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Meetings are held at Good Samaritan Hospital in the DeAngelis room.

WINTER…AGAINWinter is almost upon us again. It seems like our summers are so short compared to the many months of winter. Winter, though, is a very pretty time of year, but if you are unprepared it can be treacherousandunsafe.Hereareafewtipsthatcanhelp you prepare for the winter ahead:

Time to get your furnace checked – though at times it seems that there is not enough money to do this, this is a necessity. If your furnace goes out during the winter, you risk the water pipes freezing causing major damage and expense to your home. Call the service man and have him inspect, clean, repair, and change the furnace filter.

Buysaltandsandnow.Haveitinacontainerthatis handy for you to spread on your steps and/or sidewalks.

If you are still driving, be prepared for an emergency in the winter with your vehicle. If you get stuck in a snowbank or caught in a snowfall you want to have the necessary items in your car to help you survive. Herearesomeoftheitemsthatyoushouldcarrywith you:•Warmblanketandextrawarmclothing, extrahat

and mittens•Shovel•Flashlight–preferablyonethatissolarpoweredor

that plugs into your vehicle•Water–don’tleavehomewithoutwaterifyouare

anytime of the year•Snacks–highenergyorproteinbarsareideal•Matches,lighter,candles

•Acontainerwithsandtothrowunderthetiresifyou are stuck•Usingyourfloormatsunderyourtiresfortraction

also works.

Most importantly, if you are no longer able to shovel snow hire someone now to help you this winter. Don’t wait until the first snowfall to figure out who is going to help. Make sure that person is reliable and available to help you when you most need it. This person should also help to keep the sidewalks and steps clean by shoveling them and by putting down a de-icer. There are a lot of reputable lawn maintenance providers that also provide plowing and shoveling in the winter.

Bybeingpreparedforthewintertocomeyouwillbeable to sit back and enjoy all that winter has to offer: the beautiful snowfalls, the holiday season, and the clean crisp outdoor air. And as always, if you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact your local ADRC office.

THINKING ABOUT VOLUNTEERING?If you are like 90% of Americans you probably have thought about volunteering (longevity.standford.edu blog). What stands in your way?

For many of us, it is the day to day demands that takes over our best intentions. What if there was a very meaningful volunteer opportunity you could do in a short period of time?

Meals on Wheels with the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Central Wisconsin might be a perfect fit.

In many of our locations, we have busy full time workers that are juggling family demands in the eveningsandweekends.HowdoesMealsonWheels volunteering fit into a busy day? We have volunteers that come in on their lunch hour. Many routes can completed in one hour. Volunteers will pop over and deliver a route and head back to work when their lunch hour is over. They have a variety of schedules. Some of our volunteer drivers commit to donating their lunch hour to drive one day a week and others have given up their lunch hour to drive meals once a month. We are interested in talking with you and seeing how we can get you involved in delivering meals to homebound older adults in the community.
