If you’d like to receive Pastor Pete’s Monday morning e-mail devotional “Mondays with Pete” please send your e-mail address to him at [email protected] OR...you can read his weekly devotional on the church website under “Pete’s Blog” or on the church’s Facebook page.

TOWN HALL AND CONGREGATIONAL BUSINESS MEETING – BYLAWS

Our Bylaws require us to review them at least every four years. The Vision Team, Bylaw Committee and the Board

of Deacons have been working over the past year on this review and are now ready to make a presentation to the congre-gation of the revised document.

We will hold a Town Hall meeting on June 4th at 4 pm to present and discuss the proposed changes. A congregation business meeting will be held June 11th in conjunction with our fellowship dinner to bring the new bylaws to a vote of the membership. Approval requires a 2/3 vote of those present at the meeting. Most of the changes are minor wording, structural and procedural changes that better fit what we are doing in practice. We have, however, made a change in our Mission Statement and Statement of Faith.

Proposed Mission Statement:

A Christian Church committed to saving souls, worshiping, discipling, preaching, teach-

ing, serving and living the Word of God.

Statement of Faith

WE BELIEVE:

In one God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. (Galatians 4: 4,6; John 14: 16-17, 26)

Our salvation is through Jesus Christ: His virgin birth, life, crucifixion and resurrection. (John 14: 6-7; John 5: 24,6: 44-45;

Luke 1: 36-28; John 20)

The Bible is God’s Word. (Deuteronomy 6:6-9, 25; John 20: 31)

God desires a personal relationship with each of us though we have all fallen short of God’s expectation of us. This be-

gins with the acceptance of Christ as our Lord and Savior. (Romans 3: 23-24; 6:23; John 3:16-17)

Baptism by water is an outward expression of the inner spiritual change brought about through salvation. (Matthew 3: 3-

17; 28: 19-20; Acts 8: 36-39)

All are welcome to participate in the Lord’s Supper who believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, repent of their sins, and

seek to live in peace with one another. (Luke 22: 7-20; 1 Corinthians 11: 17-34)

The Holy Spirit guides and directs us to spiritual growth, compassion and service to one another and the world.

(John 3: 21, 32; Galatians 5: 22-26; James 2: 14-24; John 14: 15-21)

Copies of the proposed Bylaws can be picked up in the church office for your review and study.

Every woman is invited to come and be a part of this dynamic group. You will be welcomed and given an opportunity to get to know your fellow church ladies. Our focus is on service to our community through our mission work and enjoying getting together for shared good times. For more information about the CCW, please contact Jan Rundquist, Doris Tharpe, Mary Reeder or email Gerry Rector at [email protected]

CCW held the Girl Scouts Spaghetti Dinner on May 7th. CCW along with the Girl Scouts Junior Troop

exceeded all of their expectations . A great time was had by all.

Since our CCW year ended in May, I am adding a bonus activity for June— a sunset sailing adven-ture after dinner at AJ’s restaurant on the water in Destin on Friday, 16th of June. We will meet at the church to ride together at 3:45pm (dinner at AJ’s at 4:30pm). We have 24 signed up so far. The sail-boat holds 40, plenty of room for more for dinner and the cruise. Everyone will order off the AJ’s menu and pay on your own for dinner and the cruise on location. ***As for all of our activities, a computer Evite will be sent out each month to let you know all the de-tails about each upcoming activity, asking you to respond. In addition, there will always be a manu-al sign-up sheet in the food/reception area (across from the Admin office) on Sunday mornings. Join us for all our CCW activities. Bring your family, friends, and neighbors. Jan

English as a Second Language ESL Ministry The last day of ESL was celebrated by about 90 students and their families, as well as, teachers and staff on May 16th. The teachers and students had practiced the music and sign language to “Love In Any Language”, as a thank you to our director, Dot Taylor. This

song so nicely represents the message of love we want to share with our friends as we teach them English. Everyone enthusiastically celebrated each student as they were presented with a letter of participation. The students and teachers briefly highlighted their year together. The children who had attended and received home-work assistance were also recognized. We finished the evening with a time of refreshments and fellowship and hugged each other good-bye until the fall. Classes will resume September 12th. Please see any teacher or staff member to learn more about what is needed and the joys of the ministry.

If you would like to participate in teaching or assisting please contact our Director

at 850-622-1538

P.S. - Praise Sustained

What is the shortest verse in the Bible? Do you know? Can you quote it? John 11:35, right? “Jesus wept?” You are right,

when referring to our English Bibles; however, you may know that most of the New Testament was written in Greek. The

shortest verse in the Greek New Testament is a command from the Apostle Paul, found in 1 Thessalonians 5:16, “Rejoice

Always!” The first in a series of commands, God’s Word instructs us to rejoice at all times: “Rejoice always, pray

continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NIV).

The reason the praise comes first is because it is the catalyst for fulfilling the rest of the commands. Oftentimes, praise is

confused with thanksgiving. In his extensive workbook on prayer in worship, Hughes Oliphant Old provides some

clarification on the distinction between praise and thanksgiving:

Praise comes out of the experience of awe that wells up within us when we are confronted by God's

presence. Praise is the “Hallelujah” that recognizes and acclaims God's presence in the sanctuary. It is for

this reason that the gates of God's sanctuary are named Praise (Isa 60:18). Praise is entrance into God's

presence. Thanksgiving, on the other hand, is a recognition that God has blessed us.1

Praise is rejoicing in WHO God is. Thanksgiving is showing appreciation for WHAT God has done. To put it another

way, praise for the GIVER and thanks for the GIFTS.

Praise is the only response when we encounter the glorious presence of Almighty God. It brings our attention off of our

situation and puts it on God. That’s why He reminds us, “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10, NIV). When our

focus is on God, we begin to recognize that He is sovereign, holy, eternal, loving, good, omnipresent, omniscient,

omnipotent, unchanging and truthful. Each one of His character traits speaks volumes to our present situation. The

realization of who God is puts everything in perspective. Rejoicing in praise at all times is not a new concept. The

Psalmist writes, “My praise is continually of You… I will praise You every day; I will honor Your name forever and

ever” (Psalm 71:6; 145:2, NIV). Do you see how he connects the praise directly to God?

There are times when circumstances and situations take our mind off of God. If we try to say “thanks” when we are

confronted with our situation without any thought of God, it would be impossible. How many times have you prayed like

Jesus, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me!” (Matthew 26:39a, NASB)? “Lord, surely there is another

way.” I personally believe the prayer recorded in Scripture is the final conclusive prayer of Jesus, before “setting His face

like flint” to endure the cross (cf. Isaiah 50:7; Luke 9:51; Hebrews 12:2). I think He wrestled with the circumstances in

Gethsemane even to the point of sweating drops of blood (cf. Luke 22:39-46), before He embraced the final words that

concluded His prayer, “Yet not as I will, but as You will” (Matthew 26:39b, NASB).

I wish for all of us to maintain focus on God as we approach the middle of the year. May the postscript (i.e., “P.S.”) of our

hearts be towards whatever God has ordained for the rest of this year—may we trust Him with all our heart, even when we

don't understand. In the good times and the bad times, may we praise Him for the wonderful God and Father He is. He is

for us--not against us. He will work everything together for our good and His glory, if we make it our business to love Him

and know we are called according to His good purpose.

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete,

without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass” (1

Thessalonians 5:23-24, NASB).

MUSIC MINISTRY

“A Tempo” is a musical term instructing the musician to return to the

original tempo or beat. I think this certainly applies to our lives as

Christians. Sometimes we get out of sync with God’s redemptive rhythm

for our lives. Each day provides an opportunity for us to return to walk in

tempo with Him. ...Scooter Ward

Have a terrific summer break!

The Community Ukes will continue to meet on Thursdays at 10am for lessons and practice throughout the summer. All levels of expertise are welcome. That includes people who just got a ukulele and want to learn to play.

Pastor Scooter teaches new and fun music. Community Ukes played for our friends at Brookdale on May 25th. The music was patriotic for Memorial Day and we concluded with our signature song for Brookdale, “You Are My Sunshine”. We enjoyed sharing songs, prayer and love with our friends at Brookdale. Community Ukes is open to anyone interested in learning to play or experienced musicians. Please contact Pastor Scooter for more information.

hurt. From the bottom of our heart, we thank

you.
