Fall 2018 Production “Robin Hood and the Singing Nun” A panto by Stuart Ardern Nov. 10, 17 & 18, 2018 at 8pm / Nov. 11 & 18, 2018 at 2pm at the Arden Gild Hall Stage Director: Ken Mammarella Music Director: Helene Furlong The Ardensingers are really looking forward to presenting this raucous musical pantomime featuring heroic outlaws, wicked sheriffs, usurping princes, and a running parody of a well-known musical. Come out and cheer our heroes and hiss at the villains! The show is appropriate for all ages, with humor ranging from the slapstick to subtle adult humor. To current and prospective Ardensingers: This show requires a large, diverse cast, including motivated young actors. There is a lot of dialogue relative to music, and the music is generally simpler than for our G&S shows. A read-through is planned for Weds. May 16th at 7:30pm in the Lower Hall. Auditions will be on Tues. and Weds. June 19 and 20 from 7 – 10pm. Additional information, including links to the libretto and to audition selections, is available from our Auditions Page. Rehearsals will be Sunday afternoons from 2 – 4:30pm and Tuesday evenings from 7 – 10pm, starting after Labor Day. (We’d try to release young actors from Tuesday rehearsals by 9pm.) Gardeners Gild Meeting, Monday March 19, 2018 The Gardeners Gild will meet on Monday, March 19, 2018, at 7:30 p.m. in the Lower Gild Hall.

Gerry Konzelmann has volunteered to take over as the new head of the Gardeners Gild; a position known as “Gildmaster”. At the March 19th meeting we will open the floor to nominations for Gildmaster, and then proceed with the election. Following the election, on the brink of Spring, we will spend some time reviewing our past gardening successes and challenges, and we will share our ideas and gardening plans for the New Year. Please bring your favorite seed catalogs, your “extra” special seeds, your favorite and most indispensable gardening tool, your special preserved garden produce or other inspiring gardening-related item. We will take turns sharing experiences and ideas so that we may learn more about gardening, and about our community. We will also discuss future plans. This may include plans for speakers at Gardeners Gild

meetings, garden travel, projects, local nature walks and more. We would welcome suggestions about the kinds of plans that would suit the interests of Arden Club members today, and which would encourage new membership and participation in the Gardeners Gild. For questions please call Maura Lynch, at 529-9464.

6 THE ARDEN CLUB CALENDAR MAR 2018

LIBRARY GILD Evening with the Author: Arden Library Series On Saturday March 3rd, at approximately 7 PM following the Arden Dinner Gild's weekly dinner, Arden author will read selections from and sign his newest book: Island Beach - a Sonnet in the Sands. Island Beach is a New Jersey state park formed from an undeveloped barrier island by the large Barnegat Bay Peninsula. This stunning barrier island state park borders the Atlantic Ocean and Barnegat Bay at the central Jersey Shore, displaying seasonal changes that continue to fascinate. All are welcome. This is not a fee event, but donations would be much appreciated.

And, on Friday April 13 at 7:30 New York Times bestselling author will read selections and sign her newest publication. She revisits the characters from her beloved novels Love Walked In and Belong to Me in this captivating, beautifully written drama involving family, friendship, secrets, sacrifice, courage, and true love for fans of Jojo Moyes, Elin Hilderbrand, and Nancy Thayer. On the weekend of her wedding, Clare Hobbes meets an elderly woman named Edith Herron. During the course of a single conversation, Edith gives Clare the courage to do what she should have done months earlier: break off her engagement to her charming – yet overly possessive – fiancé. Three weeks later, Clare learns that Edith has died—and has given her another gift. Nestled in crepe myrtle and hydrangea and perched at the marshy edge of a bay in a small seaside town in Delaware, Blue Sky House now belongs to Clare. Though the former guest house has been empty for years, Clare feels a deep connection to it.

New books at the Arden Library Recommended for teens (YA) Five strong teen protagonists will guide YAs through the emotional minefields of young love and budding idealism. Kirkus Reviews starred (July 1, 2017) This incandescent portrait of suburbia and family, creativity, and consumerism burns bright. It’s not for nothing that Ng (Everything I Never Told You, 2014) begins her second novel, about the events leading to the burning of the home of an outwardly perfect-seeming family in Shaker Heights, Ohio, circa 1997, with two epigraphs about the planned community itself – attesting to its ability to provide its residents with “protection forever against…unwelcome change” and “a rather happy life” in Utopia. But unwelcome change is precisely what disrupts the Richardson family’s rather happy life, when Mia, a charismatic, somewhat mysterious artist, and her smart, shy 15-year-old daughter, Pearl, move to town and become tenants in a rental house Mrs. Richardson inherited from her parents. Mia and Pearl live a markedly different life from the Richardsons, an affluent couple and their four high school–age children – making art instead of money (apart from what little they need to get by); rooted in each other rather than a particular place (packing up what fits in their battered VW and moving on when “the bug” hits); and assembling a hodgepodge home from creatively repurposed, scavenged castoffs and love rather than gathering around them the symbols of a successful life in the American suburbs (a big house, a large family, gleaming appliances, chic clothes, many cars). What really sets Mia and Pearl apart and sets in motion the events leading to the “little

LIBRARY GILD CONTINUED fires everywhere” that will consume the Richardsons’ secure, stable world, however, is the way they hew to their own rules. In a place like Shaker Heights, a town built on plans and rules, and for a family like the Richardsons, who have structured their lives according to them, disdain for conformity acts as an accelerant, setting fire to the dormant sparks within them. The ultimate effect is cataclysmic. As in Everything I Never Told You, Ng conjures a sense of place and displacement and shows a remarkable ability to see – and reveal – a story from different perspectives. The characters she creates here are wonderfully appealing, and watching their paths connect – like little trails of flame leading inexorably toward one another to create a big inferno – is mesmerizing, casting into new light ideas about creativity and consumerism, parenthood and privilege. With her second novel, Ng further proves she’s a sensitive, insightful writer with a striking ability to illuminate life in America.
