Chairmans Report First of all I would like to congratulate the ladies representing our Club in the 2012 Bronze Section of Super Challenge. Well done girls! It was a magnificent effort. We are still awaiting the arrival of the new neon sign for the front of the Club to arrive. It cannot be too far away now. Also I have not had any update on the verandah surfacing. As soon as I get an update I will pass it onto the Presidents. The Club appears to continue to run smoothly, there being no domestics appearing at Board meetings. I would however ask the Social Clubs operating out of Mt Gravatt Bowls Club, when they have a club outing and leave their cars in the Club car park to travel by coach, would you please park your vehicles in the western end of the car park and leave the areas to the front and outside the Club main entrance free for visitors and other bowlers. Men's President's Report

The past couple of months have been quite busy with a significant number of bowlers

representing our club in the Super Challenge Competition and the Premier Sevens Competition.

Although our teams did not quite make it to the final they are to be congratulated for their

efforts and the manner in which they conducted themselves against some very tough

opposition.

To the Ladies who were successful in winning the final of the Ladies Bronze Super Challenge

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!! You have done the club proud.

We currently have two teams participating in the Poinciana competition and although it is only early days both

teams are performing quite well

It will not be too long before the Pennant season will be upon us and training and selection trials will begin shortly.

Perhaps this will be the year where we get to see a couple of new flags to adorn our wall of honour.

Once again I would like to express my sincere thanks to all the Council Members and dedicated Volunteers for their

continued support in the running of our club.

Ladies President’s Report The game of Bowls, as in all other sports, is governed by a set of Laws. These laws come from the past, updated and printed, learned and adhered to in every game. Every Club has a Constitution and a set of By-laws. These are updated and printed and distributed to members. This objective data can be seen as a surety that bowlers respect the past in order to enjoy and preserve the Game of Bowls and enjoy a social life within their Club. Club life should not be judged as it was "years ago”. Change is continuous and a certainty in life.

The Ladies Club recently celebrated and felt proud of our success in Super Challenge. The team played a professional, good spirited, challenging set of games meeting Clubs from as far north as Cairns and as far West as Charleville. It was exciting, happy, exacting for the Team as well as Club Members who barracked from the sidelines. And we bought home the Cup "and the bacon." Our Club and Self-selected Championships for 2012 are coming to completion in time for Pennants in June; they also have been played professionally. In recent years numbers taking up bowls have diminished. Club membership has dropped. This I believe leads to a clash between the past and the present. The committed Committee members, as always, do a sterling job in organisation and fund raising giving their time willingly and in good spirits. Why is it that just a few people enjoy subjective hurtful comments? Club selectors for Social Bowls, do their best to meet individual needs. At the time of organising the Games, only they know individual requests i.e. medical and such like. "New members should play lead" - this is adhered to as much as possible - however give us a break and encourage new members to ENJOY BOWLS and the wonderful social interaction with friends we all need. We do not mind being reminded of the past glories however we ask everyone to respect the present. On Financial Day this month we had 75 players including ten teams from other Clubs. It was threatening overcast day -all visiting teams were placed on the undercover green. I (in a seniors moment) asked the players to proceed to the greens 25 minutes earlier than the time stated in Conditions of Play. The earth did not shatter however one member found it necessary to delay play on undercover green until the designated time. Oh well I feel better now!!!!! Thank you. FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Congratulations to the girls for winning the Super Challenge at the Tweed Bowls Club. What a

tremendous effort. Southside staffer and team member, Ronnie Elliot, has not stopped smiling

and I hear all about it when the Thursday crew come down to Southside for dinner – EVERY

WEEK! Give me a break girls, I know you won and well done.

I am constantly amazed by the perception that the internet is the preserve of the young and

that us “oldies”, yes, me included, are still reading newspapers by candlelight. I would be willing to bet that if a

survey was held tomorrow the seniors in our community would figure very strongly as internet users. Most of my

friends are in that age group and use the internet to stay in touch with their family and friends, research hobbies,

future purchases, holidays and generally use it to gather knowledge. The list of uses is endless. This is why we spend

so much time, money and effort on our web sites and social media because it is the way of the future.

If you have not logged onto the Mt Gravatt Bowls Club, Carson Room and Southside web sites lately then I suggest

you do so as soon as possible and you will see state of the art photography and technology in the new panoramic

virtual tours. The following web sites have the new virtual tours installed:

www.mtgravattbowlsclub.com.au

www.carsonroom.com.au

www.southsidesport.com.au

Hopefully, by the time you are reading this newsletter the new Pylon Sign will be installed. It has been a long time

coming but sometimes you cannot foresee the circumstances that cause delays to projects. Once in place it should

put the Carson Room and the Bowls Club on the map with LED panels displaying important messages to all traffic

travelling in both directions. The LED message panels will be controlled by a cellular phone from the office providing

absolute flexibility in changing messages. They say you can’t teach old dogs new tricks but we will see what happens

when we try to teach Club Manager Jeff McLennan how to operate the LED panels. Southside Marketing

Coordinator, Veronica Elliot, operates the LED displays on the pylon sign at Southside so I am sure Jeff will be in safe

hands with Ronnie.

This financial year Southside will invest around a million dollars on refurbishments and upgrades with $250,000

being spent at the Bowls Club and $500,000 at Southern Cross Sports Club. While the refurbishment of the Carson

Room and the new pylon sign are visually noticeable to the members, the half a million dollars spent at Southern

Cross is not because the money was spent on a new kitchen and the replacement of the old air conditioning plant.

However, the members will benefit at Southern Cross through 5 star food safety, quality meals and a high degree of

comfort, particularly in summer, from the new state of the art air conditioning systems.

I changed my iPod's name to Titanic. It's syncing now. When chemists die, they barium. I know a guy who's addicted to brake fluid. He says he can stop any time. How does Moses make his tea? Hebrews it. I stayed up all night to see where the sun went. Then it dawned on me.

Deirdre’s Club Chat I trust everyone had a happy and joyous Easter and have recovered from the over indulgences of the occasion. The weather certainly favoured the holiday makers, particularly the campers. Congratulations to the Super Challenge Ladies bronze team winning the finals in outstanding fashion. The victory was even sweeter as they went through the competition undefeated. Bravo and well done all. Best wishes to Max Bygrave on turning 80 on the 18th April and to Jack Oliver who will

reach his milestone on the 13th June. A belated congrats to Gladys Holman who has welcomed her 14th Great-Grandchild, Blair, into the fold. Sincerest condolences to Phil Armstrong and Noel Horsburgh on the recent death of their mother. Our thoughts are also with the relatives and friends of Joy Bond. Joy was a regular player of Thursday mixed triples. Also recently deceased was Pat Bonham. Pat had not played for many years but was a great supporter and player for over 20 years. She is fondly remembered by many. Those still on the infirm list are Gail Ingram, Max Bygrave and Jean Magrath. Well on the road to recovery are Paddy Power, James Donegan and Lyn May. It’s great to see James and Lyn back on the green. On the travel scene are Win Worsnop to Dubai, Paris and European River Cruise, Geoff Devencorn cruising Pacific Islands, John Taylor cruising around Oz, John Davies and wife travelling South and taking in a cruise on the Murray river, Mary Smith and her sisters off to Sydney for some R&R taking in the taping of the “Ready, Steady Cook” T.V. show, Stephanie Porter and Frances Williamson are off to attend a Beef Steak and Burgundy conference in Darwin, (sounds yummy to me). On Friday 27th April a group consisting of Reg Walls, Ted Wright, Allan Pearce, John Ward and Les Ockendon (accompanied by their wives) dined at the Club to celebrate their 20 years of Club membership. Unfortunately, another member, Ron Harrold, was unable to be present. We wish the Ladies Pennant teams good luck in their upcoming campaign. They will be competing in Divisions 1, 4, and 6. Until next time, bye for now. Deirdre. Oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

POINCIANA CHALLENGE 2012 The 2012 competition commenced on 14th. April with 2 sections of 7 teams.

Five clubs entered 2 teams and the other clubs one each giving 14 competing. After two rounds the Mt. Gravatt Mountain Men are leading section 1 whilst The section 2 team The Mt Gravatt Marauders are looking for their first win

even though they are playing well. These results can be seen on our web site, also Gateway’s website and in the Sunday Mail.

Most of these bowlers are new to this type of competition, so come along and give them some encouragement. We have a team at home each weekend up to May 26th. Bruce Black. Co-ordinator

It was unfortunate that the Easter Open Pairs had to be cancelled; however the

numbers were insufficient to continue with it. It was felt it was much better to cancel

than to try to run it with the numbers we had and run at a loss.

Many aspects of human sexuality are puzzling.

Take celibacy for example.

This can be a choice in life, or a condition imposed by environmental factors.

While attending a Marriage Encounter Weekend, Tony and Julie listened to the instructor declare, 'It

is essential that husbands and wives know the things that are important to each other.'

He addressed the men. 'Can you each name and describe your wife's favourite flower?'

Tony leaned over, touched Julie's arm gently and whispered, “White Wings Self-Raising, isn't it luv?”

Thus began Tony's life of celibacy.

Do you

understand these laws?

Apparently there are

some members who are

still confused about the

laws governing the

placement of and/or

replacement of a

misaligned mat. I will deal with Law 19.1 first but

only19.1.1 thru 19.1.4 as the rest, describing the use

of groundsheets, does not affect us.

19 Placing the mat

19.1 At the start of each end

19.1.1 Before the start of play in each end, the player to play first should place the centre line of the mat lengthwise along the centre line of the rink, with the mat line at least 2 metres from the rear ditch and at least 23 metres from the front ditch.

19.1.2 If, before the jack has been delivered, a player or the marker finds that the mat has not been placed as described in law 19.1.1, the player to play first should correctly position the mat.

19.1.3 If, after the jack has been delivered but before the first bowl is delivered, a player or the marker finds that the mat line has not been positioned within the distances described in law 19.1.1, the opposing player should place the mat as described in law 19.1.1 and re-deliver the jack, making sure that it is centred, but the opposing player should not play first.

19.1.4 After the first player to play has delivered the first bowl, no-one has the right to challenge the legality of the original distance of the mat line from the rear and front ditches.

This is fairly straight forward and a law which has

been with us for a long time. Basically the law is to

ensure that each end is played from a centred

position and so that the length of any end is at least

21 metres. Confusion only comes from changes which

were made in 2006 to affect Law 19.2:

Merv Ingram

Umpire

19.2 During each end

After the start of play in any end, the mat should not be moved from its original position except in the following circumstances. 19.2.1 If the mat is displaced, it should be

replaced in its original position. 19.2.2 If the mat is out of line with the

centre line, it should be straightened on that line.

19.2.3 If the mat is off the centre line, it should be moved to that line.

19.2.4 If a player picks up the mat before the end has been completed, an opposing player should replace the mat in its original position.

19.2.5 If a bowl from a neighbouring rink, moving in its original course and on a bias which will take it back into its own rink, is travelling on a path which will bring it into contact with the mat, any player on the rink on which the mat is being used can lift it so that the bowl can pass and then replace the mat in its original position.

19.2.6 After the last bowl required to be played in each end has been delivered, a player or the marker should lift the mat and place it completely beyond the face of the rear bank. Opponents in Singles can, however, agree to carry the mat up the rink so that they can use it at the next end.

In earlier days, if a mat was placed on a line other

than the centre line, it could only be shifted to the

centre line prior to the first bowl being played. Now

there is no penalty for moving the mat during an end

to the centre line, providing it is replaced as per Law

19.1 and to ensure there is no alteration to the

distance from the ditch, i.e. one must only move the

mat at right angles to the centre line.

Basically, losing the mat can only occur as a result of:-

o Placing the mat so that the length of end would be less than 21 metres.

o Rolling the jack in to the front ditch. o Rolling the jack out of bounds right or

left. o Losing the toss prior to the game start

or following a drawn game as per Law 45.2.

I do hope that this has clarified the interpretation of

these laws. Enjoy the game.
