MOROCCO SENIORS FINISH 1-2-3 IN THE AFRICAN OPEN PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Morocco Seniors team comprising of Abdella El Ghrari – Jean Hayat, Abes Alami – Guy Cambournac, Mohamed
Said Berrada – Abdel Kamel Rerhaye, swept the medals with a comprehensive and compelling demonstration
of consistent play through the three sessions. The 1-2-3 places oscillated between the three before settling
down to 1. Ghrari – Hayat, 2. Alami – Cambournac and 3. Berrada – Rerhaye. The South African pairs of Cathy
– Pierre and Tania-Vanessa put up a spirited fight but could not breach the Moroccan wall which the Seniors
built around the three top spots. Detailed scores and results are available on the last page of this bulletin.

In the Zonal Team games, all players are requested to adhere to punctuality while reporting to the playing
table, at the beginning of each round. Ideally, please report, five minutes before start time, so you can check
your places, your opponents, your Bridge-mates and exchange convention cards.

TO BE ADVISED
THE AFRICAN OPEN PAIRS – SESSION 2
BID BOLDLY, WIN MPs!
I was kibitzing one of, Morocco’s senior team players and amongst the leaders in the African Open Pairs; this is
how the auction and the play went
Board 3, dealer S, EW vulnerable,
West North East South
Pass
1♦ 1♥ 1NT 2♥
Pass!! Pass Pass
West’s pass of 2♥ was rather tame, it may be right to pass 2♥ on
some hands, but not today; to add insult to injury, the defense
could not muster their six defensive tricks as the ♣ shift was not
found in good time. (East led a ♦ and persisted with a ♦ when in
with a ♥, no good reason to lead a ♦ as a ruff will come at the
cost of a natural trump trick, hence East should try a ♣ or a ♠ lead). (!!) A double from West would
have extracted a 3♣ from East which makes in comfort. If East chooses to defend 2♥ doubled,
accurate defense yields only +100 to EW.

THE LUCK OF THE DRAW
Board 4, dealer W, Both vul.
This board had swinging results. On the table I kibitzed, EW got
to 4♠; west opened 1♠, North bid 2♦ and East bid 4♠, ending the
auction. Different lines of play yield 10, 11 or 12 tricks, all leading
to high MP scores. Wherever, South decided to intervene, the
situations varied from 5♠ making, 5♠x, making, and one pair got
to 6♠, also making. One NS pair bid 3 NT from the South side and
10 tricks rolled home!! For this kind of score to come home, the
chemistry on the table has to be spot on! Boo Boo on the auction
as well as on the defense!
PROTEAS USE MINOR SUIT STAYMAN TO TELLING EFFECT!
Board 15, dealer S, NS vul.
Siegal – Sulcais and Fick – Der Kin Deren from the South
African open team, were NS and got to the par contract of 6♣ via
a minor suit Stayman. Siegel(sitting North) opened a multi 2♦
after 2 passes,(whereas Fick opened 2NT) heard his partner bid
2♥, then bid 2NT and the minor suit stayman took over. While
Sulcais took the RKCB route (by bidding 4♦ RKCB on his
partner’s 4♣ reponse to the minor suit stayman); Der Kin’s 4♦
elicited a 5♦ response from Fick and the pair marched on to 6♣!
The play was routine as North was the declarer and with the ♦
suit coming home and the trump suit behaving, 12 tricks roll in
comfortably. These two were the only pairs to bid the minor
slam in the entire field.
