new student leaders for 2020-2021 have been announced. They commence their term of office at the beginning of Term 3.

Being a student leader at Pennant Hills High School is an honour. A great deal of trust is placed on them by their peers and staff, to make a positive contribution to our school community. The SLC is an integral part of the school. They are the voice for our students, liaising with the school Executive, staff and students to promote the best interests of the school and the wider school community. They also perform a pastoral role, particularly with younger students and serve as role models to all. Under the guidance of Miss Morton and Mr Banyai students in the SLC gain experience in leadership, planning, communication and management.

Congratulations to the incoming 2020-2021 SLC. A list of all students elected to office will be included in the first edition of Jumbunna next term.

2020-2021 SLC Induction In line with the management of social distancing regulations, the SLC Induction will be held at an assembly for students and staff on Friday 24 July - Week 1 of next term.

Unfortunately the regular induction when we celebrate this important occasion with family and friends, will not be held. However, we will ensure the ceremony maintains its formality in keeping with our traditions.

Professor Masters’ NSW Curriculum Review Last week we welcomed the news of recommendations from the Curriculum Review by Professor Masters. There was some discussion of the curriculum being a ‘back to basics’ approach to learning, including an increased study of literacy and numeracy. This interpretation involves only a small fraction of the recommendations of the review which are far reaching and, if successfully implemented, will allow students to develop skills and deep knowledge in an innovative and engaging manner. There are many positives to be found in the recommendations which will ultimately improve student learning.

The government has laid out a timeline for the rewriting and implementation of new syllabuses by NESA commencing with Early Stage 1 and some rationalisation of Stage 6 courses.

At Pennant Hills High School we will prepare for these changes as they are released, ensuring appropriate staff learning and resource allocation.

A three page fact sheet with information has been included on pages 4-6 of this newsletter. For further details about the proposed changes, please go to NESA link: https://nswcurriculumreview.nesa.nsw.edu.au

Year 12 Trial HSC Examinations The exams commence in Week 3 on Monday 3 August 2020. Students are encouraged to utilise their semester break to study and prepare for them. This being said, it is very important, given the challenging year, that a balanced approach is maintained. Please ensure time is made for exercise and relaxation in combination with your study regime.

School Holidays This has been another hectic term with unusual events that have tested our resilience. I am very proud of the commitment and adaptability shown by our students and staff. Thank you to all families for their support. Our Penno community once again rose to the task proving that together, we are strong.

I wish all students, staff and families a safe and restful semester break. I look forward to welcoming everyone back, recharged and ready for another action-packed term.

School resumes for staff only on Monday 20 July. We welcome back students on Tuesday 21 July2020.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Spirit Week Our Student Leadership Council (SLC) turned on a magnificent week, ensuring that the necessary adjustments to our normal festivities, did not deter

from the excitement and proceedings of the 2020 Spirit Week.

There was an online talent show, a huge egg and spoon race, online trivia and a Thankful Thursday where the SLC showed their appreciation to staff for the enormous effort made during the lockdown period. It was very much appreciated by us all. As always, celebrations concluded with our fantastic multicultural day shindig - a colourful day of fellowship which unites and reminds us of our diverse culture.

Congratulations and thank you to our hardworking SLC Coordinators Miss Morton and Mr Banyai who work tirelessly to nurture and provide guidance to our leaders ensuring at all times that their development is well managed with the perfect combination of seriousness and fun.

The staff surprised our students with a lip-sync video contribution, which played during our online assembly. Thank you to Ms Van Ede for her enthusiastic coordination of the video. A sensational week! Well done Penno.

Year 10 Course Selection Information Session Our process for selection of courses for Year 11 2021 has had an overhaul due to the current restrictions on gatherings. Replacing the information evening is a Course Selection Information Hub, which will be posted to the school website next term. In it will contain information provided by The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) and myself, regarding the requirements for the Higher School Certificate (HSC) as well as advice about course selections. There will be information from each faculty regarding individual courses available for study in 2021. Mr Symons, Careers Adviser will also post a video with valuable information.

This week, all students, parents and caregivers were emailed the Course Selection Information Booklet. I encourage families to familiarise themselves with the courses on offer over the semester break, in readiness for the information session scheduled for Period 4 on Wednesday 22 July - Week 1 of next term.

Following this, each student will be interviewed by Mr Symons to assist in tailoring their pattern of study. Selections will be made online next term once the process commences.

Students are urged to speak to their teachers and/or Head Teachers with any questions they may have. Parents and caregivers seeking clarification about courses are asked to email the school with a request for the Head Teacher of the relevant subject to contact them.

The advice for students remains the same - carefully read all the information available, speak to your teachers and the Head Teachers as they are your greatest resource and choose subjects that genuinely interest you - ones that you think you will be good at.

SLC Change of the Guard Congratulations and thank you to the outgoing SLC. They can all be extremely proud of the work they have done in building Penno Pride, exceeding the expectations of the whole school.

They have organised charity events, sporting competitions and a very successful Spirit Week. They have attended and facilitated school events such as Open Day and assisted in all formal and informal school ceremonies and assemblies. The 2019-2020 SLC have provided a valuable student voice on many school issues.

After an extensive recruitment and selection process, the

CANTEEN NEWS ONLINE ORDERING

Pennant Hills High School Canteen is very happy to advise that we are now accepting lunch orders online. All you need to do is download the app Qkr! by MasterCard, set up a profile and start ordering.

Lunch orders can be placed daily no later than 9.15am or for your convenience you can order up to 2 weeks in advance. You pay online via the Qkr! by MasterCard app and your child can then collect their lunch from the dedicated lunch order window.

The advantages of using Qkr! by MasterCard are: your child is guaranteed to receive their choice of lunch and no long queues to wait in.

If you have ordered and you know your child or the student who ordered will be sick and not in on the day, just call the canteen on 9473 5020 by 9.30am, let us know and we can hold the order over until the student returns.

We are very proud of our menu and its compliance with the NSW Government Healthy Canteen Strategy. We really look forward to making lunch times easier for our students and receiving your online orders soon.

MULTI-TASKING? MYTH OR REALITY? IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHO YOU TALK TO…

Ask any student and they will tell you they can multi-task with ease. Do homework, watch TV, listen to music and check their phone all at the same time, no problem. Ask the academic researchers though and a different story emerges.

Dr Larry Rosen, Professor of Psychology at California State University, explains that what is actually occurring in this ‘multi-tasking’ is ‘task switching’. Instead of doing two things at once, students are actually switching their focus from one task to another and back again, in a parallel fashion, at high speed, resulting in them staying on task for an average of only 65% of the time period and for a maximum of only 3-5 minutes at a time. Constant task-switching results in it taking much longer to complete the individual tasks not just due to the interruptions, but also because there are delays as the brain switches between tasks and refocuses. This brief bottleneck in the prefrontal cortex delays the start of the next task and the more intense the distraction, the longer it will take the brain to react.

A study conducted by Dr Rosen’s team sent varying numbers of text messages to students in a lecture then tested the students on the content of the lecture. The results were surprising, it was not the number of interruptions that negatively impacted results, it was the time taken by the students to react to the interruptions. Students who responded immediately performed worst on the tests. Those who considered when to check the message and respond (ie in a part of a lecture they deemed less relevant) performed significantly better.

What we can learn from this is that students need to become more aware of their ‘task-switching’ and make conscious decisions as to when they choose to shift their focus – instead of being enslaved by their technology and at its constant beck and call. We need to teach students that this constant mental task shifting (even thinking about the technology has the same effect as actually checking the technology) takes oxygen and brain activity away from what they are learning. We need to convince our students that it is ok and even necessary to wait, that they don’t have to respond immediately and do have the ability to delay their check-in with the cyber world. It is all about learning that we can control our selective attention and choose to ignore distractions.

We need to train the brain to stop thinking constantly about technology. However, resistance for too long can create anxiety and a fear of missing out, creating ‘continuous partial attention’ in students as oxygen is diverted to activate and maintain thoughts about social media at the expense of classroom material.

Dr Rosen’s team has determined the best approach for students who find it difficult to pull back from their technology devices is to set an alarm on their phone for short regular ‘tech breaks’. They may start with 15 minutes and gradually increase this amount over time to around 30 minutes. The phone will be face down on their desk on silent mode or off, and when the alarm rings they let themselves check messages and status updates for a minute or two, then set the alarm again. Dr Rosen’s studies found that knowing they can check in 15 minutes creates less anxiety, whereas depriving them of the phone completely did not stop them thinking or obsessing about possible e-communications which took away from their ability to focus fully on their homework. It all comes back to teaching the concept of focus.

Finally, Dr Rosen argues that we cannot simply remove technology and other distractions; they are too intricately woven into students' daily lives. Instead students should learn metacognitive skills to help them understand when and how to switch their attention between multiple tasks or technologies.

In the Home Economics faculty, Stage 5 is back to doing what they love – practical work! To satisfy the requirements of our course, students must undertake a range of practical experiences that occupy the majority of course time. Practical experiences allow students to develop skills and confidence in the use of a range of equipment. This is what we have been working on since returning to face-to-face learning resumed:

HUMAN SOCIETY AND ITS ENVIRONMENT (HSIE) UPDATE

Historical Investigation Year 11 Ancient History and Modern History students have just completed a historical investigation which involved selecting an area of interest, researching the personality or event and make a judgement based on the various historical interpretations identified in the research process.

Each student produced a museum exhibition that reflected their interpretation of the personality or event. All students reviewed the museum pieces and had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the reasons for the various interpretations.

Ancient Sparta Year 12 are studying Ancient Sparta. This included looking at the army composition and strategy. Students used lollies to re-enact the Battle of Leuctra in 371BCE

Learning Outdoors Ms Tibbotts' Year 11 Geography and Mr Schmitt's Year 12 CAFS class went on a quick walk to the outdoor classroom where they discussed Social Impacts of Technology for Year 12 and Global Challenges for Year 11; sub topic Population. Students interacted with each other through brainstorming discussions on each of the points relevant to their current topics.

Mr Schmitt led the group with initial discussions of ideas in the use of technology throughout the world, focusing on challenges such as transportation, medical advancements, fertility and mortality rates.

Further discussion included artificial organs including the implications and effects it would place on future generations and the use of technology within developing nations. Across the two classes, students were well engaged with one another and this short activity proved to be a successful collaboration across the two faculties and year groups.

Mr Schmitt and Ms Tibbotts were very impressed with the level of discussion and have further discussed another collaborative lesson at the outdoor classroom.

YEAR 11 DRAMA SHOW

Year 11 Drama students have been hard at work on their yearly theatre production.

They are performing Louis Nowra's Summer of the Aliens.

Set in Australia in the 1960's, the play is a dramatic and touching coming-of-age story in an era of uncertainty. The show is cast, directed, performed and designed by the talented Year 11 Drama class.

We will be rehearsing throughout the holidays in preparation for the two student and staff performances in Week 1 of next term on the evenings of Thursday 23 and Friday 24 July.

Unfortunately due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, external visitors are not allowed to attend the performances.

We encourage all students to support their friends by on one or both of the evenings. Tickets are on sale in the main quad at lunchtime this week and in Week 1 of next term for $10.00 each.

We are looking forward to showcasing our drama students next term.

MUSIC ENSEMBLES PROGRAM

We are happy to announce that rehearsals for all music ensembles will resume in Term 3, commencing with the Choir on Tuesday 21 July - the first day back for students after the holidays. We are looking forward to having everyone back playing and singing.

In light of the need to adhere to the Department of Education's Infection Control Guidelines specific to the Performing Arts, rehearsals will be held in the MPC for the first two weeks followed by the Learning Hub during the weeks when Year 12 Trial examinations and Year 11 Yearly exams are scheduled. This will give us the necessary space to conform with requirements. There will be hand sanitiser, iso-wipes and paper towels available at rehearsals and students will be required to assist in the correct set up and pack down procedures.

We are saddened to announce that Mr John Buckley, Concert Band 2 and String Group Band Director has accepted a position at another school and will no longer be able to continue with his expert tutelage of these two groups. He will continue with Concert Band 1, rehearsing Friday mornings. Guest conductors will be engaged for CB2 and Strings until a replacement is finalised.

We are currently looking at Term 4 performance opportunities and will keep our families updated with information as it comes to hand.

Year 12 Band Students On behalf of the Music Ensembles program, we acknowledge the following Year 12 students for their commitment and contribution:

These talented students have been in the program since Year 7 and have devoted many hours to rehearsing and performing in concert bands, jazz bands and the choir. They have represented our school at local fetes, The Sydney Opera House, numerous instrumental festivals and eisteddfods. They have also performed at many of our own formal school ceremonies such as Presentation Evening.

Congratulations and thank you for being excellent role models and an for inspiring our younger students. We will miss them greatly and wish them well in their future endeavours.

SPIRIT WEEK - THANKFUL THURSDAY

A letter from our 2019-2020 School Captains Emily and James

Dear Staff,

On behalf of all students at Pennant Hills High School, the Student Leadership Council would like to thank you for your continued support of

and dedication to our learning. This year has presented unique challenges that serve as reminders for just how important our strong

school community is.

From learning at home, it was clear to all students that online modes of learning were not seen as a hindrance but rather as an opportunity by our

teachers. Online learning was embraced by our teachers with creativity and enthusiasm, which instilled in students a sense of motivation and allowed

for the continuation of the high standards of learning we receive in the classroom. Behind this, was hard work and dedication not only from

teachers but all staff at Penno.

This is a wider reflection of the outstanding support we are continuously given to help reach our goals as students. We would like to take the

opportunity to thank you all for this.

Sincerely,

The Students of Pennant Hills High School, 2020.

Yesterday, at assembly we saw staff come together to inspire YOU to reach your potential at school in this fantastic production put together by
