PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

In Honour of a Beautiful Soul It is with great pride I write this edition of Jumbunna after the opening of the Caitlin Hackett Memorial Garden last Sunday. Even though the rain doesn’t seem to have stopped in the last four

weeks, there was enough of a break in the weather for over 80 people from our school community to come together to witness the opening of the garden to honour our former student Caitlin who lost her brave battle with cancer in 2015.

The garden itself is the culmination of a native garden in our Garden Quad complete with frog pond, Indigenous Rainbow Serpent, a native Australian stingless beehive and a life-size painted cow. The garden project has been largely student led, in particular by Year 11 Prefect Pume and the schools PEAS team (Penno Environmental, Agricultural and Sustainability team), which is facilitated by their coordinating teacher Mr James Stanton-Cooke.

As always at Pennant Hills High School, we were also extremely fortunate to be supported by our P&C, in particular Penny Dean and Margot Leggott, to help bring this project to reality. I would also like to acknowledge Mr Ross Rapmund of the Hornsby Shire Council Community Nursery and a former student of Penno, who not only provided important advice on the project but also generously supplied us with more native saplings to be planted.

As part of the opening ceremony we were treated to, Welcome to Country by Indigenous student Liam and heartfelt speeches by representatives of the Student Leadership Council (SLC) and friends of Caitlin including Pume, Kalindi, Tabitha and Brad. This was followed by a very informative, in fact educational presentation by Mr Steve Maginnity from The Australian Native Bee Company who installed the stingless native social beehive.

After the opening of the garden gate by Caitlin’s mother Jane and grandmother Margaret, who were supported by family members, we were fortunate to have Mr Costa Georgiadis, host of the ABC’s Gardening Australia, tie the whole ceremony together for us. He spoke with enthusiasm and passion, about the importance of the bees in our environment and the significance green space can have not just for our school students but also for our local community.

A local Cheltenham resident Mr Michael Bianchino said, “It was the most amazing environmental, humanitarian, moving, culturally diverse, empathetic and compassionate memorial I’ve ever attended in the local area. What we experienced was a snapshot of how great Australia can be. Words and pictures don’t do it justice”.

It is heartfelt comments like these that highlight some of the many reasons why we are all extremely proud to be a part of Pennant Hills High School.

Senior Parent Teacher Evening The Year 11 and 12 Parent Teacher Evening held last week was a great success. A number of parents spoke to me after their interviews and made mention of how grateful they were for the time our teachers had spent speaking with them. I also had a number of parents provide feedback about how well our staff know their children, acknowledging that it is evident that we are trying to assist them in reaching their full potential whilst at Pennant Hills High School.

It was certainly pleasing to receive this feedback and I have passed it on - together with my own sincere thanks, to our outstanding and very committed teachers at Penno.

Ross Warren, Principal

ATTENDANCE NOTICE

The Department of Education (DoE) requires all absences to be explained in writing by a student’s parent or caregiver.

Although the Sentral system has the facility to reply to SMS messages, the reply does not qualify as a written response. Therefore a student must place an absence note in the Absence Notes box, located in Student Reception, the first day back at school after their absence. The SMS system can still be used as a tool to advise the school of any concerns or discrepancies with the roll marking of that day.

An Absence Notification document can be downloaded from the schools’ website for your convenience. Go to the Our School tab and then select Attendance and Absences. Please see Absence Note on the following page.

Please note, the DoE’s School Attendance Policy states that ‘The Principal or delegate will ensure that explanations for absences are recorded within 7 days of the occurrence of the absence. Any unexplained absences from school that are unjustified for more than 7 days, will remain as a permanent record on the students attendance.’ Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

InTech 2017 HONOURS - continued from page 1

Congratulations to Justin, John and Emily who have had their 2016 HSC Industrial Technology Major Projects selected for the prestigious InTech 2017 exhibition.

InTech 2017 is the annual exhibition of outstanding Major Design Projects developed by 2016 HSC Industrial Technology students.

Justin designed and created a reversible hall table from Jarrah and European Beech. The table included shaped legs and two large curved inlays; John designed and created a Japanese low cabinet featuring traditional dovetail drawers hidden behind mortice and tennon sliding doors. Timbers used were American Walnut and Victorian Ash; and Emily designed and created a curved side cabinet from Tasmanian Blackwood. It was constructed using techniques of lamination, steam bending and veneering.

This year, the InTech exhibitions will be at the Sydney Timber and Working with Wood Show held in Hall 6 at the Sydney Showground, Homebush. This exhibition will take place on Friday 23 June to Sunday 25 June from 10.00am to 4.00pm.

Last year, over 2500 students and teachers from across NSW visited the InTech exhibitions at the Sydney Timber and Working with Wood Show.

GOOD FRIENDS, GOOD LEARNERS How Parents Can Assist

Pennant Hills High School’s primary function is to:

establish a harmonious social climate in which children can learn well

set examples of courtesy, reasonableness and fairness

hold expectations of courteous and civil behaviour within the student body

teach students how to conciliate over conflicts

encourage students to support their peers in a positive way

Junior students have recently been presented with the Good Friends, Good Learners brochure and spent time with their Year Advisers discussing positive relationships with their peers. Parents can assist by spending time reviewing the Good Friends, Good Learners brochure with your child and discussing how to effectively manage conflict when it arises in everyday situations.

Different types and causes of conflict can arise at school. These can range from disagreements and temporary falling-out with friends, to discourtesy and name-calling.

Sometimes adolescents do not know how to deal with conflict well, and a relatively minor situation can escalate to ongoing hostility, rivalry, group harassment and bullying.

If your child comes home upset about a situation of conflict at his or her school, you can:

Listen to the story of how this developed

Be calm and supportive

Acknowledge their feelings by letting them know that it is normal to feel hurt, sad, scared, angry, etc.

Help your teenager be specific in describing the issues: Who, What, Where, When.

Ask them for their ideas on how they might resolve this positively

Suggest that there are adults at school who could assist, such as the Year Adviser, School Counsellor

or Head Teacher Student Wellbeing.

If the situation persists, and is affecting your child’s attitude to school in a detrimental way:

Ask your child if you may contact personnel at the school to let them know there is a concern.

Ensure as far as possible that your teenager knows what action you are proposing to take and that he/

she agrees with it, and be guided by his/her response.

Make an appointment with the appropriate personnel so that time can be made available for you to talk.

Unhelpful parent responses:

Ignoring your teenager’s response.

Becoming emotional and angry.

Advising your teenager to physically fight back.

Confronting the teenager who causes the conflict.

Confronting the family of the teenager causing the concern.

CATCHING UP WITH THE LIBRARY

Visitors to our library may have noticed a few changes lately. Following the generous decision by the P&C to allocate funds towards upgrading the library, we have begun clearing spaces to enable a better vision of what we may achieve. To date: Two large bays of shelving have been removed from the non-fiction section and have been donated to Lifeline, Pennant Hills. Many thanks to one of our parents, Michael Walsh, who gave up his time to dismantle and deliver the shelves to their new home. Freeing up this space has opened up a reading nook in the far corner of the library; and The broken sensitizer has been removed from the library entrance - a big thank you to Industrial Arts teacher, Mr Ctercteko for his assistance. This has created a more accessible entry point and a more welcoming feel to the library.

What has been happening in the library? Year 7 students have all had lessons in the library about accessing the new Oliver Library Catalogue at school. Students can access the Pennant Hills High School library catalogue at home by logging into their DoE portal. The Hornsby Shire library catalogue can also be accessed through the “Oliver Library” link. Don’t forget to check out our new books carousel on the Oliver home page. There are nearly 100 new books to choose from covering genres such as science fiction, romance, crime and drama. Premier’s Reading Challenge The Premier’s Reading Challenge 2017 has begun. There’s still plenty of time to register. Students only need to read 20 books by the end of August. Students can register themselves from a link in their portal or see me if they need assistance.

BYOD and PDHPE

During PDHPE lessons students’ BYOD devices will be kept secure in the PE storeroom.

Students must bring their devices to the storeroom at the start of the lesson.

James Boyer , Head Teacher PDHPE

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT, HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION (PDHPE)

Physical Education It has been a hot - some days temperatures exceeded 40 degrees, and now very wet start to the year for students in Physical Education.

Year 7-10 PE lessons have been delivered mainly in the MPC and this was made all the more bearable under the big fan. Students were introduced to a range of partner and bush dances and were able to compete against their peers on the big screen in the Wii Game Just Dance. Despite dance not being everyone’s favourite activity, everyone is willing to give it a go and the vast majority cannot help but do it with a smile on their faces.

The second half of Term 1 is Cross Country Season. Our training has been impeded due to wet weather and as a result the School Cross Country Carnival has been postponed to Tuesday 4 April. During Cross Country, students are motivated to improve on their personal best times and are being rewarded with a Certificate of Merit when they make a significant improvement. This unit is all about personal best and it is great to see students pushing themselves beyond their comfort zone.

Crossroads – U Turn the Wheel

This year there have been changes to the structure of the Crossroads Program. The program is mandatory for Year 11/12 students in NSW Government Schools. It is designed to help senior students address issues of health, safety and wellbeing at a time when they face significant changes and challenges in their lives.

This program is being conducted through a ‘seminars approach’, involving four 1-day seminars, spread throughout Year 11. Last Friday was day one of the program and students completed the RYDA – U Turn the Wheel component at St Ives. The RYDA Program is attended by over 30,000 students each year and is aimed at reducing the road death and injury incidents on our roads. The program specifically targets 16-17 year olds. Year 11 students participated in a range of activities on the day including hazard perception, fatigue, safe celebrating, influences on stopping distances and the costs of owning and maintaining a car. It was an extremely valuable and meaningful day for the students.

Open Night Thank you to the following students who volunteered their own time to assist the PDHPE Faculty during the Open Night earlier this month: Sarah, Sam, Myles, Joel, Timon, and Jordan. These students form part of the Premier’s Sporting Challenge Leadership Team and were great ambassadors for our school on the night.

BEE THERE OR BEE SQUARE

Despite the wet weather, there was a buzz in the air as over 80 students and other members from the school community joined together at our school last Sunday morning for the opening of the Caitlin Hackett Memorial Garden. The opening included a fly-in visit from Mr Costa Georgiadis, host of ABC’s Gardening Australia.

The event celebrated the establishment of a native garden in the school courtyard complete with frog pond, Indigenous Rainbow Serpent, installation of native Australian stingless bee hive and a life-size painted cow.

It was the culmination of work by students, teachers and the P&C to honour student Caitlin who lost her brave battle with cancer in 2015. Caitlin loved cows, colour and art and just wanted to be remembered, according to her friends who celebrated the fitting tribute.

The garden was the combined inspiration of students, including the steam engine behind the project Pume and the schools PEAS team (Penno Environmental, Agricultural and Sustainability team) and our teacher Mr James Stanton-Cooke, Co-founder of BeardsOn for Conservation (a not-for-profit environmental organisation) who worked together to

create a special space for students to reflect on life and the importance of the environment.

“We are honoured and privileged to be part of regenerating this special patch of earth and installing a native bee hive that will allow for people to connect, reflect and heal in their own way, in a newly constructed green community space. This is a new and special milestone for BeardsOn helping to support the school, students, staff and the broader community", remarked Mr Stanton-Cooke.

Attendees enjoyed a reception from our Principal Mr Warren, a Welcome to Country by Indigenous student Liam and heartfelt speeches by representatives of the Student Leadership Council and friends of Caitlin including Pume, Kalindi, Tabitha, and Bradley.

Mr Steve Maginnity, of The Australian Native Bee Company who installed the stingless native social bee hive, gave an educational presentation on Tetragonula Carbonaria, which he described as ideal pets that live for just 50 days, travel no more than 500 metres, and will not leave their hive in temperatures below 18C or above 35C.

After the opening of the garden gate by Caitlin’s Mum Jane and grandmother Margaret, supported by family members, Mr Costa Georgiadis, host of ABC’s Gardening Australia, was the surprise keynote speaker.

He gave a passionate, tree-hugging address about the importance of the humble bee to humanity and the significant role bee hives and green space can play in schools and an increasingly busy society.

The event wrapped up with a morning tea and the planting of more native saplings generously supplied by Mr Ross Rapmund of the Hornsby Shire Council Community Nursery, who was a past student of the school and provided important advice on the project. Thank you to our staff who gave support on the day: Deputy Principal Brendan O’Byrne, Eileen Clements (who assisted with refreshments), Kristina Garcia, Matthew Dwight, Brad Wilson, Charlene Stewart, Cassandra Bernie, Lucas Ctercteko, Merise Feneley and Katherine Stanton-Cook (assisted with refreshments and catering).

This wonderful experience by our school and wider community was summed up in the quote from a local Cheltenham resident, which appears in the Principal’s Report earlier in this publication.

After a successful debut in 2015, Pennant Hills High School will again be entering a team, Penno Pacers, in the

2017 Hills Relay for Life. This event will run from 9.30am on Saturday 20 May to 9.30am on Sunday 21 May 2017

at Castle Hill Showground, Showground Road, Castle Hill.

This overnight event involves teams walking in shifts over a 24-hour period to raise much needed funds for the

Cancer Council in support of local programs to help defeat cancer. It is an opportunity to recognise and

celebrate local cancer survivors, patients and carers, and to honour and remember loved ones lost to cancer.

Whilst there is a serious message and a serious cause, it is a fun event with a carnival atmosphere, all day

entertainment and lots to see and do. You do not have to run; you can just walk and talk, and it is up to each

person how many laps they do and when they do it. Last year, the Penno Pacers accumulated 1540 laps in total, or

616 kilometres at Castle Hill Showground. The major highlights of the weekend include:

Saturday 9:30am Opening Ceremony

10:00am Survivors and Carers Lap

6:00pm Ceremony of Hope

Sunday 8:30am Dog Hour (register your dog for $5 and they can join us walking the track!)

9:30am Closing Ceremony

More information concerning the program of events can be found at www.relayforlife.org.au

In support of our Pennant Hills High School team, a Mufti day was held today in conjunction with a barbecue at

lunchtime organised by members of our Student Leadership Council. Early next term, a cupcake stall and other

fundraising initiatives will also be held. At the 24-hour event, members of the Penno Pacers will also be selling

Gozlemes.

Staff and students will be approaching local shops and businesses seeking their assistance to make this event as

successful as possible. In 2016, the Penno Pacers raised over $4000.00, contributing to a grand total of over

$268, 000 by local community teams. We would love to raise even more money this year.

So how can you help? Please come along and join us walking and talking – for as long or as little as you like – and

encourage your children and friends alike. If you cannot make it on the day, please consider making a donation.

Any amount is greatly appreciated.

To register or make a tax-deductible donation please go to:

SPORTS SHORTS…

Open Girls Knockout Basketball Our team lost their 3rd round game to Narrabeen Sports High School 48 to 36. Top scorers were Lara (9 points), Amy (11 points) and Zoe (6 points). The team were unlucky to come up against such a tough opponent so early in the draw, but fought hard until the end. Congratulations to the players for their fantastic effort.

A Guard of Honour for a Cross-Country Record Year 7 students formed a guard of honour at the finish line of the Cross-Country course this week, to celebrate the success of Austin who completed five laps of the course in 30 minutes, a school record!

Students from 7P and 7O were awarded Merit Certificates for beating their previous best times in Cross Country. A reminder that the Cross-Country Carnival was moved to Tuesday 4 April due to the recent inclement weather.

ENCORE

Last Monday our Music 1 and 2 students from Years 11 and 12 watched the Encore showcase at the Sydney Opera House, which recognises and celebrates outstanding performances and compositions from the recent HSC Music Examinations.

20 exceptional students, who had completed their HSC in 2016 in different schools across the state, performed their works. Many of these students will be continuing their studies in music after Secondary School. Styles ranged from Classical Piano and Strings, to Contemporary Vocal and funky Latin Jazz - a crowd and personal favourite.

As a student, it is inspiring to see what we could achieve during our senior years of High School.
