July 2017
It is with sorrow that I let you know that a long-time Guild member and a very dear friend has died. Patty Krohn, who had battled cancer with a courageous heart and a positive spirit for some years, died on June 24th in her daughter’s home in Texas, peacefully and surrounded by family. Those of us fortunate enough to have known her will miss her sense of humor and her generosity of heart.

Reminder: The September Guild Meeting will be a week early — on September 14. This is due to
Temple Beth Or's own facilities needs during the
Jewish High Holy Days. Mark your calendar so you
wont forget!
July Meeting Jenny Sloan Copeland will present a Trunk Show of Quilts that focus on simplici-ty in quilting. The show will include charm quilts, big block applique, scrap quilts, and big stitch quilting. Make quilts that look hard, but are not - play with colors. Make it Simple, Make it Fun!
President’s Message
Dear Members of the Guild,
Let me introduce myself to those of you who do not know me. My name is Darlene Silverman and you have chosen me to be your President for the next two years. As an explanation for my accent, I was born in Cali-fornia and have had the good fortune to live in a number of different states. I have loved every place I have ever lived and that includes Raleigh, which I am very happy to call my home; although I rather doubt that I will ever sound like a native!
Many of you started quilting young and/or have a family history that includes quilters. I did not. Although I have been a garment sewer since I was kid back in the stone age, I did not start quilting until my own kids were almost grown, about 14 years ago. I joined this Guild about 11 years ago. I have served on the Board as a Member-at-Large and Vice President. Along with other members of the Remnants Bee, I have worked for Quilts on Wheels and Workshops. I served as an at-large member of the 2016 Symposium Com-mittee.
I love this Guild -- not only for the opportunities it gives us as members, but also for the way it serves the broader community. The Guild is worthy of the time and effort it takes to keep it going; and it keeps going only as long as there are those willing to put forth that time and effort. I thank all of you who have served and those of you who are serving in leadership positions. I thank all of you who answer the call when asked to volunteer for special events, such as selling raffle tickets and the upcoming Guild quilt show. For those of you who have hesitated in offering your services to the Guild or who have not done so for a long time, I en-courage you to do so. As with so many other aspects of life, the quality of your experience is proportional to how much you are willing to put into it. My life has been enriched by the experience of serving the Guild and I am made a happier and better person for the relationships I have developed with the wonderful peo-ple with whom I have served.
As this newsletter comes out the first week of July, we have yet to have the July meeting. I regret that I will miss my first meeting as President. Actually, I will miss the first two. I thank Dorene for stepping up to run these meetings. I will miss the July meeting, as Jules and I will be on a long-planned vacation: a train tour through the Canadian Rockies and a cruise up to Alaska. Regardless of whatever else I pack, I will also be packing a few projects and my lightest-weight machine! I will miss the August meeting for a far less fun reason: I am scheduled for a double knee replacement on August 15th. Please remember and tell all of your Guild friends that we our September meeting will be a week early — September 14— due to scheduling conflicts with Temple Beth Or.
Another thing I will miss is the July 22nd Comfort Quilt Workshop. If you are in town, don’t miss the oppor-tunity to spend a hot Saturday in a big, cool room with other quilters making quilts for one of our worthy charity groups. If you are already working on a comfort quilt, bring it along to work on or just bring your machine and basic tools and pick up one of the fun and easy kits provided by the Cutting Bee. Then take a break from working and walk around the room to look at what everyone else is doing. Pull up a chair and chat with someone you don’t know. I have made lasting friends at these workshops. You can too.
Darlene Silverman
Anyone who works on a quilt, who devotes her time, energy, creativity, and passion to that art, learns to value the work of her hands. And as any quilter will tell you, a quilter’s quilting friends are some of the dearest, most generous, and most supportive people she knows. – Jennifer Chiaverin

RAFFLE QUILT Holiday Boutique
Do you create works of art that you love and wish to donate to the guild
for a holiday boutique silent auction? Perhaps you make boiled wool hats
or hand bags. Maybe you make potpourri pouches or crochet necklaces.
Perhaps a quilted scrap book cover, zen tangle picture or a journal cover is
your passion. How about some of those unique pincushions we just saw
from the swap. Maybe a set of seasonal miniature quilts or placemats
makes you go to your happy place.
What ever your artistic hand made items may be, please think of donating
one or more to our November meeting Holiday boutique. Find the perfect
item for those who are hard to buy for.
Items should be new and valued around $15 or higher.
Let's see how creative we are!
