President's MessageBy: Bert Lundberg

Now that 2020 has ended, hopefully, this year will be a better year for everyone in the world. as I am writing this message there is an american dying every 30 seconds from Covid 19. 2020 will go down in history as one of the worst years in history.

Thanks to the thoughtful people of our village we were able to survive with a minimum of impact. The Board, out of abundance of caution, acted early and shut down all the activities in our village. It was a tough decision to do but it was the wise thing to do. It appears that in November when we shut down and locked West Hall we installed a lockbox for all the residents correspondence, maintenance requests, HOa fees, etc. This was to keep our employees and residents as safe as possible.

If you are coming from another state, such as Florida, Gov. Murphy is requiring you to quarantine yourself at home for 14 days. The Board has taken additional safety measures by equipping our mainte-nance men with protective equipment. This is for your safety and also theirs.

The leaf pick-up has been completed and what a wonderful job Pete and his men did this year. With the new equipment he had purchased this year made it easier to complete. The next step was the cleaning of the gutters by Pete. Hopefully this is completed by the time you get this message.

The village looked very festive with all the lights and Christmas decorations. The clubhouse was deco-rated by the Maintenance Dept. and a new feature this year is the lighted Christmas Tree in the front lake. Thanks to the Board of Directors and several residents that volunteered their service.

We will get past this pandemic if we all stick to-gether and do the right thing. Continue to wear your mask, social distance and wash and sanitize your hands often. There is light at the end of the tunnel with all the vaccines that will be given out.

In closing, I would like to wish everyone a HaPPy aND HEaLTy new year. Let's have peace on earth and good will to all men. God Bless CGL and america.

Important News – The Radburn LawOn May 18, 2020 the New Jersey Department

of Community Affairs issued new regulations to the raburn Law. This law governs how community as-sociations hold Board elections, membership voting rights, notices of Board meetings and binding votes taken at such meetings.

Please take note:-In order to vote in annual Board elections, a

stockholder must be in "good standing", current in the payment of carrying charges, late fees, legal fees or other charges lawfully assessed by the Corpora-tion. Notification will be sent at least thirty (30) days before an election to any stockholder who needs to rectify their status.

- Write-In Votes will now be an option. On even years, there will be five (5) spaces for any write-ins as there are five (5) openings on the Board. On odd num-bered years, six (6) write-in spaces will be reserved for six (6) openings on the Board.

-Ballot tallying at the annual Board election shall occur publicly.

- Voting at closed Board meetings will not be bind-ing until taken at subsequent open Board meetings.

- The Community Affairs Department has set up a process for complaints on their web site.

The new regulations to the radburn Law are currently being challenged in New Jersey Superior Court. Cedar Glen Lakes will be implementing these new regulations.

Common GoalHi Neighbors,Last month I included a couple of date changes on

two of our 2021 events. The date change on our Oldies Dance should have changed to Saturday September 11, not august 11.

The news reports are indicating that we are getting closer to a vaccine. Hopefully, we'll be able to have some Common Goal events in 2021. In the mean time, please continue to be safe and take all of the recom-mended precautions.

as always, please not hesitate to call me with any questions, concerns or suggestions.

JaNuary 2021 ECHOES OF THE GLEN 9

Creative WritersSubmitted by Charlene Roberts

Imagine...a world of great hope, a world of col-laborative thinking, a world of connection through spirit and heart...

In the midst of a global life-threatening situation the Earth is changing in positive ways that is quite un-expected. Waterways are becoming clearer, air pollu-tion has improved, whales and dolphins are frequently sighted off our beaches, and so many other changes are taking place that are positive for life on this planet.

In the midst of our upheaval is hope unlooked for. Little did we know what changes we would go through ourselves. We've been distant from the world of humanity as well as the natural world, not noticing how our daily lives were being affected, the connection we had with each other being severed by our inability to correct that which we cannot control. We had been separate from each other for so long that we forgot how to connect with each other at a more basic level. Now we are discovering ways to change all that, ways to tune in and give to others the gifts that we ourselves possess. We are looking inward so that we may once again experience a real connection with others.

That's not to say we can't still pick up our smart phones to communicate. although technology has and can keep us separated it can also bring us together as we've witnessed these past few months through social media. But we also know it's important to hear a real voice and see a real face, and react to real time com-munication. We have come to realize that nature plays an important role, in a big way. More people have gone out for a walk, rode a bike, paddled a kayak, or took a drive through the country these past months than ever before. We have discovered true gold in those treasures that can be found in a bit of nature. I was amazed at how many places there are to take a walk a short distance away from my house. Hidden gems revealed beautiful spots to clear my head, stretch my legs and breathe some fresh air. To feel the sun on my face was like heaven on Earth. Nature has healed us in ways nothing else could and it has brought us back to our self, that which speaks from the heart and overcomes all things. It's what I call the trilogy of life – nature, communication and creativity, coming together in perfect harmony.

as 2021 begins let us remember what we've

learned and take heart in knowing that this will not last forever, that this too shall pass. 2020 will be a year we will never forget, but this year will be a year of transformation that we will remember for the rest of our lives.

Walk in love, be well, be safe...

Health Report: Consequences of Dehydration in Seniorsby Laura Slauson

you may have already experienced some mild dehydration effects. Most of us have. If so, you prob-ably didn't feel that you were at your best. Perhaps you experienced some of the possible dehydration symptoms, including:

• Fatigue• Memory problems• Poor concentration• Irritability• HeadacheThese symptoms can appear quickly. In fact, ac-

cording to the article in Age and Ageing, even a small drop in our body-fluid levels (as small as two to three percent) can lead to physical and cognitive problems in older adults.

The long-term effects of not drinking enough water are the factors that lead to chronic dehydration. Elderly people can experience some of the following symptoms when they're chronically dehydrated:

• Low blood pressure• Dizziness• Skin problems, including pressure sores• Constipation• Kidney problems, including kidney stones• Increased risk of urinary tract infectionsIf left untreated, you can die from dehydration.

Some of the severe dangers of dehydration are:• Seizures: Dehydration can lead to an electrolyte

imbalance. In elderly people, particularly those with cardiac problems, the consequences can be grave. Because electrolytes carry electrical signals to our muscles, changes to our body's electrolyte balance can lead to seizures. Warning signs of an electrolyte imbalance include:

• Muscle cramps• Irregular heartbeat• Mental confusion• Shock: Low blood volume shock (also called

hypovolemic shock) happens when we experience a sudden drop in blood volume. Dehydration can lead to low blood volume, which in turn leads to a drop in blood pressure and, sometimes, shock.

• Kidney failure: Dehydration complications such as low blood volume can reduce blood flow to the kidneys, which can cause lasting damage to the

renal system over time.• Heat exhaustion or heat stroke: When we get

too hot, our bodies cool down by sweating. But if we don't have enough fluid to produce adequate amounts of sweat, we can quickly become overheated.

Depending on a person's overall health, it takes anywhere from a few days to several weeks to die from dehydration, according to the Death with Dignity National Center. Most people would die somewhere in the middle of that range, closer to 10 days. But, in general, a loss of more than 10 percent of a person's body weight through fluid loss is a medical emergency that can lead to death if not treated.

Knowledge Is PreventionBeing aware of the risk of dehydration is the first

step toward averting it. So don't hesitate to talk to your healthcare providers about creating strategies for getting enough fluids. And watch for the warning signs of dehydration (in yourself and your loved ones). although dehydration in elderly people can be serious, it's also preventable and treatable.

Have a Healthy and Happy New year.Geri Soto, Health Chairperson

Kevin's Kids – Thank You!The Kevin's Kids annual Drive is over and the

holidays are behind us. I am pleased to tell you our community donated $2,870.00 to Kevin's Kids. It was because of your generosity that we were able to keep the holiday magic alive for so many children and their families.

My sincerest and heartfelt thanks to the Cedar Glen Lakes Board of Directors, the Cedar Glen Lakes clubs, and the many Cedar Glen Lakes individuals and families whose donations made the Kevin's Kids Drive a success. I would also like to mention the clubs individually who donated. They are the Piecemak-ers, Bingo, Ladies of the Lake, Conunon Goal, and Lakeside Gardeners.

again, thank you to all for your support!I Wish you a Blessed, Happy, and Healthy New

24 ECHOES OF THE GLEN JaNuary 2021

When shooting indoors everyone’s fi rst thought is to use a fl ash. While this is often a good move, shooting indoors without a fl ash can produce some very interesting images.

using the natural light will enhance many images. Someone in the glow of a candle is a good example. Using a fl ash in this case will overpower the golden glow of the candle. This is also true of shooting an event on stage. A fl ash will eliminate the stage lights and create harsh shadows

Many of these shots will have a slow shutter speed, so you may need some additional camera support. If you don’t have a tripod, try leaning against something, placing your elbows on a fi rm support, and using the self timer.

as always you can send me an email at [email protected] with any photographic questions. Visit www.kirmsphotography.com if you’d like to see more of my images.

Keep shooting and improving your images, but most importantly, have fun with your camera.
