From the President...

Welcome to Spreckels Organ Society's 29th annual In-ternational Summer Organ Festival! Whether this is the first time that you have attended one of these concerts or you have come to all the preceding 28 festivals, you will be delighted with the talent we are able to present to you this year. The really wonderful pleasure for all of you is the increased size of the organ to 5,017 pipes. Not only is the organ larger, but it has many new sounds that should tickle your fancy and your ears! While you are here, I hope that you will visit our gift shop. You will find new items this summer, highlighted by the beautiful new Spreckels history book. Not only will you learn more about our grand 101-year-old lady, but there are many wonderful photographs, both cur-rent and historic, included as well. Immediately adja-cent to the gift shop is our Membership table. Please consider joining the Spreckels Organ Society if you are not a member already. As I write this letter to you, anticipating the season, it is with great excitement that I look forward to meeting and seeing you and the promise of our all enjoying some beautiful music this summer. I am glad that you are here and hope that you will con-tinue to come to more concerts this summer and in the years to come! Warmly,

Jack Jack Lasher President Spreckels Organ Society

Dear Friends,

Special thanks to concert sponsors, who are listed on each of the concert pages, and to these sponsors of the season as a whole:

Lyle and Barbara Blackinton George Hardy and Michael Tassiello

As we embark on another International Organ Fes-tival, I hope that you will enjoy the musical treats that are in store for us. This year, the enlarged Spreckels Organ will sound magnificent with the varied artists that we have brought to you from around the globe. Thank you so much for your support at this fine venue. Without you, all this would not be worthwhile! Best wishes,

Dr. Carol

The 29th annual International summer Organ Festi-val is dedicated to celebrating the lives and spirit of Vivian and Ole Evenson, who helped to create and manage the Spreckels Organ Society. Their time, talent, and treasure were generously shared so that the vision of the Spreckels brothers to have great music in the heart of Balboa Park could be sus-tained for the long term. Since Vivian’s passing in October 2015, the Society has sought to commemo-rate their immense support and to celebrate the joy they brought to us all.

I met Vivian and Ole Evenson in March, 1983 on my first day as Res-ident Organist of First Presbyterian Church. I immediately became aware of their many years of gener-ous contribution of time and re-sources to the music ministry of the church: the organ, the concert grand piano, the concert series, and many special projects. One of the pastors had given Vivian an angel playing a piano, calling her our “piano angel.” I enjoyed picking up this theme and over the years managed to find a different angel to give her at birth-days. When it became apparent that we needed to create an organization to expand the concerts on the Spreckels Organ, I naturally turned to the Evensons for help. I imagined something along the lines of the church concert committee. Vivian’s reply was that Ole told her he thought she should do it, as “it wouldn’t amount to much!” We unanimously elected her as Presi-dent of the Spreckels Organ Society at our first meeting. Little did any of us dream of what the SOS would

become under Vivian’s leadership, or that she would lead the organization for the next 16 years. In the early years Vivian and I worked together around our kitchen tables. The founding trustees all picked up specific aspects of the program, such as maintaining membership lists and preparing the Stoptab newsletter. We all worked together on our goals, objectives, concerts, publicity, grant applications, and hosting guest per-formers in our homes. Vivian was a tireless fundraiser, phoning her friends for support. As the program grew, we needed to hire a part-time administrative assis-tant and, soon, use an office in Balboa Park. She oversaw every aspect of our growth and expansion with a joy and energy that inspired us all. She loved to welcome concert audiences, inviting them to become part of the Society. When she “retired” as President she continued to raise and give money and to build links with other service groups in the community.

The primary mission of Marine Band San Diego is to support the Recruit Training Regiment and other depot organizations. Additionally, the band performs a wide variety of music at military ceremonies and civilian events throughout San Diego County and the southwestern United States. Gun-nery Sergeant Francisco Gaxiola conducts the ensemble. He has written several of the arrangements for band and organ that are to be played at the June 27 concert.

K EVIN BOWYER was born and educated in England. His 1987 world premiere of Kaikhosru Sorabji’s two hour solo Sym-

phony for Organ, considered “impossible” ever since its publication in 1925, helped to cement his reputation as a player of contemporary music and music of extreme technical complexity. He recently completed a critical edition of Sorabji’s complete organ works, a thousand-page pro-

ject that occupied him almost full time for six years (2008-14). Tours abroad have tak-en him throughout Europe, North America, Australia and Japan. He has released a great number of solo CDs. Kevin’s article, Twen-tieth Century European Organ Music – A Toast, cast as a play set in a Cotswolds pub, in the Incorporated Association of Organ-ists’ Millennium Book, was described by one reviewer as “quite simply the best piece of writing on organ music that I have ever seen.”

Now that the Spreckels Organ Society’s Drive to 5,000 Pipes is complete, the organ has 80 ranks and 5,017 pipes, making it once again the World’s Largest Out-door Pipe Organ. These new pipes bring exciting new voices that add more color and shimmer to the sound experience of a Spreckels Organ concert. Stage 1 of the Drive, the Cen-tennial Tuba rank of pipes, re-quires a separate blower in order to power the big pipes, which give a “bold, broad cap to the total or-gan ensemble,” in the words of Curator Emeritus Lyle Blackin-ton. Stage 2 of the Drive, also dedi-cated at the Centennial Concert of Dec. 14, 2014, consists of the paired ranks of Gamba and Gam-ba Celeste. These 146 pipes intro-duce string sounds that were miss-ing on the Great manual, as a re-sult enhancing the entire string ensemble of the organ. Stage 3, which does not offer added numbers to the official pipe count, nevertheless brings important and recognizable bells and whistles—literally. Triangle, castanets, tambourine, Persian roll cymbal, klaxon, siren, train whis-tle, doorbell and other special sounds now add to the enjoyment of watching a silent movie here,

accompanied by the Spreckels Organ. This stage also includes Glockenspiel and Xylophone of 37 notes each. Stages 4 and 5 are comprised of the four new pipe ranks that were dedicated in the April 23rd “Taking the Title” concert. The final pipe was pledged in June, 2015, and this spring’s special event was a continuation of the Centennial celebration of the or-gan and Balboa Park. Stage 4 is the 8’ Geigen Ce-leste rank and the 4’ Violina Ce-leste rank. Together they add richness and “shimmer” to the string sounds on the Choir manu-al. Stage 5 consists of the 8’ Vox Humana and the 8’ Crommorne, each of which add a distinctive voice to the Solo manual. Thanks to L.W. Blackinton and Associates for the team’s su-perb work on the additions to San Diego’s musical treasure!
