I hope that all families enjoyed the break in school routines especially seeing as so many children were running out of puff in those last couple of weeks of term. Even though we have only been back four days it has been a busy time with a couple of big activities: 100 Days of School On Tuesday students from Foundation-Year 2 celebrated 100 days at school with a range of numeracy and literacy activities based on 100. Children were invited to dress up and the range of costumes was fantastic. Thank you to the parents for the time and effort put into the costumes, the teachers who coordinated the day- especially Megan Heys our Numeracy Leader and of course the children who participated in the day. Girls AFL Footy On Tuesday girls from Year 4, 5 and 6 participated in the District AFL Round Robin. THURSDAY 20th July 2017

Dear Families,

As I walked through the yard this morning unlocking the various doors this fantastic rainbow appeared above our multi purpose room and it made me think of what a wonderful way to welcome in the new term. I hope that all families enjoyed the break in school routines especially seeing as so many children were running out of puff in those last couple of weeks of term.

Even though we have only been back four days it has been a busy time with a couple of big activities:

100 Days of School On Tuesday students from Foundation-Year 2 celebrated 100 days at school with a range of numeracy and literacy activities based on 100. Children were invited to dress up and the range of costumes was fantastic. Thank you to the parents for the time and effort put into the costumes, the teachers who coordinated the day- especially Megan Heys our Numeracy Leader and of course the children who participated in the day.

Archbishop Hart. The final elements of preparation are two reflection days next week. On Tuesday the students will participate in a Reflection Day at St Paul’s Missionary College in Wantirna South. The children will reflect on the significance of this Sacrament as it applies to their everyday life. Then on Wednesday they will join with the students from St Patrick’s School for mass and some time to meet with Archbishop Hart prior to the reception of the Sacrament on Friday night.

SJV Fete 2017 and COMMUNITY On Tuesday evening the organising committee for this year’s fete conducted one of their regular meetings. This group have already had a number of planning meetings and much is being done behind the scenes. From this point on they will regularly be calling for volunteers in a range of areas.

Please be prepared to put your hand up and be involved. The SJV Fete has a very proud tradition of community involvement creating a community success.

So often we talk of role models and refer to them as people with a profile- sportsmen, entertainers, business leaders and the like. In reality this community event is one where we all have the opportunity to be role models to each other and especially to our children.

A community event like our fete builds ownership, respect, pride and camaraderie in our school these are the type of KPI values that we want to grow. We could have the best buildings and physical resources in the world but if we don’t have the values and example then we are missing the mark.

If you want to find out more about how you could get involved why not attend the PFA meeting next Monday evening at 7.30p.m. in the staffroom, you will be most welcome.

St. John Vianney’s Feast Day and Grandparents Day 4th August On Friday 4th August we will be celebrating St. John Vianney’s Feast Day and Grandparents/Special Friends Day. On this day we invite all Grandparents/Special Friends to come along and see what a school day looks like here at St.John Vianney’s. Some of our students have prepared a special card for the occasion and our Student Representative Council members will prepare some special activities. The timetable for the day is as follows:

• 9.00a.m. Grandparents/Special friends come and are welcome to visit classrooms • 10.15a.m. St. John Vianney’s Feast Day Mass, Grandparents special friends most welcome • 11.15a.m. Morning tea in the multi-purpose room for the Grandparents/Special Friends • 12.00p.m. Children come in from playtime, Grandparents/Special Friends head off

SCHOOL PRODUCTION…. DONATIONS PLEASE Please see the below list, are you able to help ? Ø Huge (Dishwasher or fridge boxes if possible) I would like one or two if possible. Ø Wide PVC or even cardboard pipes would be great. They would need to be tall

(around 6 foot I'm hoping and preferably the same shape. They could be returned as we would make a base and we could send them back.

Ø Any flat/large pieces of cardboard would be good as we need to cut circles from them. Ø Polystyrene offcuts would be handy as well to make things more 3D. Ø Some more newspapers

HELP PLEASE …. Please leave your names at the office or email Gabbi Davoren at [email protected] if you are able to help with the school production. It would be great to have some dads or mums with wood working skills to make some simple screens for us. We would also like some help on a Thursday (during leadership time) to make props with the 5/6 children. We appreciate any and all assistance.

Indonesian Day at SJV – Friday 11 August 2017

Once again we are holding Indonesian Day at SJV where we celebrate the culture of Indonesia together as a school community.

This year we are having a musical incursion from Baguskan, a company that has many years of experience in bringing authentic Indonesian culture to schools all over Victoria. They will be bringing a real gamelan orchestra and the students will be learning to play the instruments.

Gamelan orchestra!

They will also be bringing a real becak (pedicab) and all the students will have a turn in this unique Indonesian form of transport.

A becak!

We are very lucky to have the support of the parents in providing a hot lunch, Indonesian style. Enak! Delicious!

Nasi goreng!

Jangan lupa – Don’t forget! The students are being asked to dress in the colours of the Indonesian flag Merah (red) and Putih (white). There will be a prize for the best costume!

Parents, family and friends, how can you help us to have the very best Indonesian Day? ☺

• Volunteer to help run the becak (pedicab) rides. There is a bike at the back and the seat is at the front. We would love parents to take a shift during the day (approx. 40 minutes) to either ride the becak or push it along so the students get to feel what it is like (You won’t need to go to the gym! Lots of great exercise!) Please contact Mrs Davies for a spot on the roster.

• Volunteer to help with the workshops. Each grade from Grade 2 to Grade 6 will be running a workshop. It would be fantastic to have some extra pairs of hands (including the gamelan workshop if you are musical). Please contact Mrs Davies for a spot on the roster.

• Remember to dress your child/children in red and white.

6

• Provide your child/children with 2 strong plastic bag (recycled, and preferably white) for our Kite Making workshop (they can bring them in any time before the day and they will be stored in the classroom)

• Come along to our assembly that will be held from 3.00 to 3.30 on Indonesian Day where you will see a performance of the Gamelan Orchestra and see students win prizes for the best costumes and maybe a performance of one of Indonesia’s most famous legends!

More details and reminders to come. Hope to see you there!
