July is Friends Of CASI Month In 2008 Jim Ezell presented to the CASI board a new sponsorship pro-gram called the “Friends of CASI.” This program provided an opportunity for individuals, Pods, and companies to be part of the TICC sponsorship group on a lesser scale than the Legacy, Gold, and Silver sponsorship pro-grams already in existence. I’m sure you all remember the TV ad for a cell phone in which the actor keeps asking, “Can you hear me now?” I decided to use that as the title for this article because for the past few months that is exactly what I’ve been asking myself about my communications with CASI.

I know, and you do too, that CASI isn’t perfect. I know there have been questions in the past about board leadership, money, policies, closed door activities and other stuff. If the last Great Peppers Meeting is any indication, CASI seems to be pulling itself along in a positive manner. The board’s activities are virtually transparent, we rely more on Great Pepper input year-round, and after handling some tough money decisions, CASI is back in

the black! And the 50th Anniversary celebration is going to be super! So, what is it that I need to be communicating? We, CASI, need you to be involved! How, you ask?Recruit some new members. If every Pod added one new CASI member it would add a lot to our already ex-

citing organization. This isn’t a money thing. This is a life’s blood thing. So many of us are headed for the rocking chair, if we don’t get new blood, we’ll look out there and we won’t see anybody. Just a couple newbies, folks. I’m not asking for each Pod to do a hundred. If you recruited two new people from your regular cooks who aren’t CASI members, it would be a great start.

Support our sponsors. Sponsors support CASI because they like who we are, and they like the exposure their products get. Add our sponsors’ logos to your cookoff posters. Talk about them. Have some sponsor products vis-ible at your cookoffs. The message will get to our sponsors very quickly.

Support the CASI online store! I can’t think of an indicator besides Membership that gives me/us insight into the health and welfare of CASI. When long-time members won’t buy, it isn’t because there isn’t anything there they like, although that’s what they might say; it’s because they don’t care to support the organization by spending a few bucks. You know, I’ve sent most of my relatives an email on how to get to the store. I told them, buy a shirt and when someone asks you what a CASI is, tell them it is an organization that Crazy Ted belongs to that cooks chili. It ends up they went to a couple of cookoffs sporting their CASI T-shirts.

Volunteer for a position of responsibility. Volunteer to run for a pod office, or run for a director position. How many Pods out there don’t even hold elections because they can’t get a slate together? Pods need officers and even occasionally new ones. CASI needs directors. We need new ones, younger ones. We need folks willing to take on off-board support positions. The more people we have involved, the easier it is for everybody. Take a week and think about it. Then go to casichili.net and download and fill out a Director’s Application and send it to me. I’ll buy you a beer!

Can you hear me now? Did you hear me?? I hope so.

CASI Forever! "Chili, Charity and Fun"tED

There will be a raffle at TICC this year benefiting the fund. We are giving away an HP laptop computer (grand prize) and a popup with the 50th anniversary logo. The computer was donated by a generous bene-factor and the popup was from Statewide Remodeling.

There will be no printed tickets this year. I am purchasing tickets with spaces for address information. An email is going out to all Great Peppers asking that they spread the word and sell tickets for us. A special sheet will be sent for them to keep a tally. This is similar to how Keith Longabaugh does it for the stove for Cooking For CASI. Tickets can be checked out to sell by contacting me. I will also be selling at the GPM. Tickets will be 5 for $20 or $5 each. If you have any questions, please contact me at 214.802.8194 or [email protected]

Grades are due to me so if you know one of our students, please remind them to send the grades to me. Nancy HewlettScholarship Program Administrator

2016 TICC POSTER CONTEST

It’s time once again to get creative and start thinking about a poster design for the 2016 Terlingua International Chili Championship (TICC). CASI is looking for a unique, creative design that embodies the essence of TICC and CASI..

Poster Guidelines• When designing the piece of art, please keep in mind that the

poster is a vital element to the success of the event. The artwork chosen will not only become the official poster of the Terlingua International Chili Championship, but it will also possibly add to the development of the retail merchandise.

• Artwork must incorporate the following elements:

o Name of Event: Terlingua International Chili Championship

o Annual Designation: 50th Annual

o Location: Held at Rancho CASI de los Chisos

o Date of Event: November 5, 2016

• Artist should keep in mind that the Sponsor Logos, CASI logos, pictures of the previous year’s winners and names of the current Board members will be included in the finished poster.

• Artwork or photo must be original design, no copyrights, with the use of bold colors.

• Actual sizes of the finished posters are 19” X 25” and 11” X 17”. Submissions do not need to be that size but they need to maintain that proportion. The 11” x 17” poster is an infor-mational poster. Copies of previous years’ posters are available in PDF format upon request. These posters may be used as a guideline for some of the content required in the design.

• The artist should design an initial draft of the poster artwork. If selected, the artist will work with CASI staff in making changes and developing the final piece.

• Artwork must be camera ready. If selected, artist agrees to relin-quish ownership of artwork.

• If selected, artwork becomes the sole property of the Chili Ap-preciation Society International, Inc. The winning designer will receive credit with their name included on the final product.

• If selected, artist agrees to sign and number fifty (50) prints within 30 days of request.

Scholarship recipients express their gratitude –Dear CASI,

Thank you for your extreme generosity. With your help I will be able to pursue my goals for years to come. I have one more full year here at Casper College until I graduate with a degree in Drafting and Design Tech-nology. After Casper I plan on transferring to New Mexico State University to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technolo-gy-Mechanical. I am still rodeoing and I will be able to compete for another two years. This semester I enrolled and completed 19 credit hours. I have a cumulative GPA of a 3.1 and I am working on raising it.

Again, thank you for your generous sup-port.

DURANT, OK – The 33rd Annual Southwest Open was held at the Choctaw KOA RV Park on May 28th to benefit the KOA Camp for Kids. Charlie Tyree and his staff did an amaz-ing job and we are grateful for all they did to support this cookoff. Friday evening’s events included a dessert contest, cook’s party, and domino tourna-ment. Eighteen desserts were turned in, with first place Janet Nash receiving a gift of $100 in free play at the Choctaw Casino Resort. Judy Russell, who actually cooked Janet’s entry, won second place. The NOB Pod prepared tacos for the cooks and everyone enjoyed the side dishes that were brought to the party. The domino tournament took place after dinner, with Scott Spencer and Tim Collier winning. The runners up were Clint Wooster and Tom Noe. Saturday morning produced a beautiful day after Friday’s light showers. There were several day cooks out on the lawn just outside the party room. Several past champions were in attendance including the current TICC champion James Burns. After final table judging, Blu Daniels led our ladies in a Tequila Rose toast before announcements. Teresa Baker was the lucky winner of a YETI tumbler for pre-registering for the cookoff. The 50/50 winner was Margarett Lopez, and the winner of the raffled Wendell Rankin painted stove was Bruce Stew-art. Our sponsor, the Choctaw Casino Resort, provided chairs for our top 20 chili winners and top three in show. They also added a chair for the oldest participating cook, which was won by George Bienfang, and a chair for the farthest traveled, which was awarded to Bill and Cheryl Pierson for traveling 833.4 miles from Batavia, Illinois. Several other states, including Okla-homa, New Mexico and Louisiana, were represented, in addition to Texas. On behalf of the NOB Pod, I wish to thank the many volunteers who helped make the cookoff a success this year, and a special thank you to Jim Ezell who emceed for us. Without you all, it would have been difficult to pull off. But we did it and produced a winner out of 121 cooks. Spencer Casey of Arlington, TX won first with his grandfather, Eli Casey of St. Jo, TX, coming in second. Matt Jones of Lubbock, TX won third. Top Show was Janet Nash of Shreve-port, LA. The NOB Pod cookoff was held on Sunday and had 67 chilis turned in. The winner was Sabrina Swanwick of Mesquite, TX. Connie Collier of Snyder, TX was second and Janet Nash of Shreveport, LA was third. Blu Daniels of Winona, TX won first place Show. We hope you will all join us next year for the 34th annual Southwest Open and join us in representing “Chili, Charity and Fun.” Cindy Noe, Great Pepper, NOB Pod

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Maybe it was for the “pants on fire” or maybe it was for the autographed Gary P. Nunn T-shirt, but the chili god Chiligula smiled on Mike Wat-kins on May 29, when he took top honors at the inaugural Chili of all Nations cookoff. The Capitol Pod teamed with local grocer Foods of all Nations to bring competitive chili back to Charlottesville after a long hiatus. Eighteen cooks from five states raised $1,240 for the Service Dogs of Virginia. Top 3, L-R above: Christopher Watkins, 3rd; Mike Watkins, 1st; Kit Rudd, 2nd.

Free Quarter Page Ad to CASI Pods, State, Regional and International Opens

As a CASI Pod you are required to put on a pod cookoff once a year. To help you advertise your pod cookoff we allow each pod to place one quarter-page ad in the Terlingua Trails each year, free of charge. This ad should run the month before your cookoff occurs. Should you decide that you need an ad larger than a quarter-page, we will simply bill you for the difference in price. This ad should not be confused with the article advertising your cookoff in the "Cooking with CASI" section in the Terlingua Trails. That article will start to run as soon as you request your cookoff packet and will run until your cookoff occurs.
