TIPS ON PREVENTING DOG COMPLAINTS The Town of Vermilion receives many complaints about barking dogs or dogs at large. These occurrences make it very difficult to maintain a harmonious relationship with your neighbors.

To prevent your dog from running at large:

Spray or neuter your pet, this will prevent roaming.

Keep your dog(s) busy with toys, games or activities to prevent excess energy from encouraging escape attempts.

Take extra precautions at high times of stress within your residence.

Do not allow your dog to jump up on the fence. Some breeds have an amazing ability to jump over tall fences.

Ensure fences and gates prevent escape. Fix holes and replace old boards.

Place bricks 6”-12” under the fence line so they do not dig under your fence.

Walk your dog(s) on a leash everyday for their exercise and your benefit.

Ensure the dog(s) has food and fresh water throughout the day.

The life expectancy of dogs that continue to run at large is very short. They are often struck by moving vehicles, mauled by other dogs, stolen or taken to new homes, exposed to PARVO and other animal diseases, or attacked/injured by wild animals (skunks, porcupines, coyotes).

As a responsible pet owner, it is your job to ensure your dogs are not barking excessively or running at large.

Invasive Species in Vermilion

Each year in our community, a number of invasive species, particularly weeds, are identified either on town, commercial, or residents’ properties. Invasive species have the potential to cost producers billions of dollars in losses, decimate native species, and alter our landscape forever if not carefully managed. Invasive weeds can be categorized in two ways: Noxious or Prohibited Noxious. Noxious Weeds are plants known to exist in our province that are too widely spread to do anything but take steps for containment. Prohibited Noxious Weeds are those plants that have not already been widely established in the province and can still be eradicated. In both cases, property owners are required by provincial law (the Weed Control Act) to take action to control or destroy the plants. One of the most problematic Noxious Weed in Vermilion is Scentless Chamomile. A single plant has the potential to spread nearly 400,000 seeds. In the flower stage, Scentless Chamomile has a bushy like appearance along the stem, a noticeable difference from the commonly confused Noxious Weed Oxeye Daisy which has a smooth stem. In drought like conditions, Scentless Chamomile will flourish. Its seeds have the ability to remain dormant for up to 15 years and will germinate during cold and wet weather. Alternately, flood conditions accelerate the germination process. When landscape work is being done, there is the potential of uncovering dormant seeds. If found, Scentless Chamomile must immediately be removed from your property. Removal includes hand picking, fully removing the root fragments, and placing the weeds in doubled garbage bags. Upon doing so, the weeds can be taken to the Waste Transfer Station; notify the scale attendant that you have Scentless Chamomile and you will be directed to an area for disposal. Simply cutting the plant with a lawn mower or a weed trimmer will most certainly cause the seed to spread throughout your property and neighboring properties, and will not kill the plant. There are herbicides that have shown promise in fighting the spread of Chamomile—please consult local experts for more information on those options. Please do your part to prevent the spread of invasive species.
