From the PresidentGlobalization is like the Weather

I hope your “To Do” list for July includes signing up for one of the Chamber’s upcoming travel opportunities.

As we’ve recently experienced, there’s a lot of anxiety in our society—especially when it comes to welcoming people from different cultures into our workplaces, schools, and neighborhoods. But in reality 96% of humanity lives outside our country’s borders—and we risk being left in the dust if we don’t know how to effectively engage the rest of the world.

There’s no better way to understand other cultures than to travel. Global travelers learn to celebrate, and engage in the vast diversity on our planet. Learning about a different culture and place allows us to see our own challenges in sharp contrast, and with more clarity, as we observe smart people in other countries dealing with issues similar to our own.

Globalization is like the weather: regardless of what you think about it, you have to live with it. Our world is a big, rapidly evolving marketplace, and I believe North Iowa can be a region that will greet diversity with enthusiasm, rather than anxiety. The purpose of the Chamber’s Global Familiarization Travel program is to assist North Iowans in transitioning to the global economy. It’s a chance to experience first-hand the people and culture of countries that are important U.S. –and Iowa—trading partners.

There’s still time to join us on tours this fall to Ireland and Egypt. We’re planning trips to China next spring and to South Africa in Fall 2017. Contact the Chamber for more information.

Cost of Living UpdateThe Chamber participates in research to assist the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) in producing the quarterly Cost of Living Index. Raw data from urban areas across the United States is analyzed to compare the cost of living in various geographic locations.

An index of 100.0 represents the mean; an index lower than 100 means the region’s cost of living is less than the average, and a number higher than 100 indicates the cost is higher than average. In the most recent survey, Mason City has an index of 88.4. By comparison, the Manhattan borough in New York City—the most expensive place to live—has an index of 227. The least expensive locale in the study is McAllen, TX with an index of 76.9.

Here’s an example of how to use this information. Assume that City A has a composite index of 98.3 and City B has a composite index of 128.5. If you live in City A and are contemplating a job offer in City B, you can calculate how much of an increase in your after-tax income is needed to maintain your present lifestyle. In this case, 30.72%, or about a 31% increase in after-tax salary to maintain the same living standard.

The table below compares the cost of living in Mason City to peer Iowa communities.

City & Composite Score

Groceries Housing Utilities Transportation Health Care Misc. Goods & Services

Mason City 88.4 102.5 72.9 91.5 78.3 94.8 97.1

Lullaby Lane to Begin Constructionhank you to all who have helped make the Lullaby Lane project a reality. The Chamber’s 2016 Leadership North Iowa class is excited to report that enough funds

have been raised to complete the paver pathway in Lullaby Land at Elmwood Cemetery.

Lullaby Lane will be installed in the children’s section of the cemetery and specifically honor infants lost to miscarriage or premature birth. The class partnered with Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa in an effort to help provide closure to mourners by offering a personalized engraved paver in the pathway.

Construction will ensue later this summer and be completed in time for a dedication ceremony in October for National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month.

If you’d still like to contribute to the project, please send donations to the Mercy Foundation with “Lullaby Lane” noted on the check. Any additional funds collected above the cost of the pathway will be used at the discretion of Mercy’s Fetal and Infant Loss Bereavement Committee. For those interested in purchasing an individual paver to honor their loved one, information will be available soon through Mercy.

Grant funds available for tourism marketing

Each year, Visit Mason City (VMC) allocates a portion of our budget to helping local partners promote events, attractions and other initiatives that exhibit positive tourism potential. Funds from the Visit Mason City Tourism Marketing Grant Program are awarded to marketing projects that directly increase visitor spending in the community and help build a positive image of the North Iowa area. The

target audience of projects funded by this grant program must be visitors from outside a 90-mile radius of the community with a cash match required by the applicant.

The deadline for ROUND 1 applications is 4 pm on October 3, 2016. Vistor-focused marketing projects completed October 1, 2016 – October 1, 2017 are eligible. Applications and complete program details are available online at http://www.visitmasoncityiowa.com/index.php/tourism-marketing-grant.

If applicants would like assistance in completing an application, appointments can be made with Visit Mason City staff. Appointments will be scheduled during Visit Mason City office hours, Monday through Friday 8am to 4:30pm. Appointments must occur three business days before the application deadline.

Priority is given to projects that focus on attracting visitors to the City versus projects that focus on visitors once they have already arrived. Other evaluation criteria includes the number of visitors attracted, number of lodging rooms generated, distribution plan, projects held during the "off season" and during the weekday.

Submit Your Event Information Visit Mason City is in the process of updating our Calendar of Events, located

at www.VisitMasonCityIowa.com. Nearly 3,500 travelers access the Visit Mason City website each month… The Calendar of

Events is the most viewed page on the site! All tourism-focused events in Cerro Gordo County that are open to the general public will be

considered for placement on the web site but priority will be given to those in Mason City. The event should be unique to the community and of interest to travelers outside the community.

To have your event considered for listing on the web, please complete the online submission form available at:

instrumental in ensuring the ongoing operation of Clear Lake’s historic Surf Ballroom.

“The Corridor is fortunate to gain such a multiplicity of talent, experience and service in these new board members,” said Dan Varnum, Corridor Chairman. “Joleen, Brian and Paul each bring with them tremendous perspective, energy and leadership to the Corridor. Those qualities will be important each day in their new role at the Corridor as we seek to improve the business climate and economy in North Iowa.”

“NIACC does not discriminate in employment or education. See http://www.niacc.edu/about/non-discrimination-statement/ for additional information.”

The Pappajohn Center offers a 10-week course to help a business start-up right or grow to the next stage. Launch & Grow Your Business has a track record of success. We recently updated the program to include elements of the lean start-up. We help you test your value proposition or brand promise. Confirm you are targeting the right customer. Learn from peers and customers. Get your business model right before writing the business plan. Develop the right business model by testing and interviewing customers. Understand how to fund your business. Then understand the operational side of the business and write the plan. Success requires a road map. You can't get financing without a plan. Participants create a business canvas or one-page summary of their business model. They perfect a persuasive pitch. They write the business plan. Participants avoid five common problems:

1. The customer does not see what goes on “behind the scenes” of your business. How matters less than what you deliver. Customers want the benefit. 2. Lack of focus, especially a confusing brand promise. Are customers willing and able to pay for what you promise? 3. Inability to explain or understand the customer’s request or pain point. Entrepreneurs have to speak with the voice of the customer. 4. Inability to plan where the next customer is coming from. Sales don't happen by accident. 5. The bottom line? Start up + operating costs require recurring revenue less than total expenses.

Participants bring their own specific business concept to pursue. The concept may evolve or change with lessons learned. Launch & Grow covers it all from licenses to bookkeeping to marketing to setting up shop. Take your business idea and make it real. Take your existing venture to a new level of growth and success.

The next offering is scheduled for September 15—December 1, 2016 from 6:00-9:00 pm at CL TEL in Clear Lake (107 N 4th St.). One evening class per week at a cost of $199. To register, please contact 641-422-4358, course #102835.

Premier Members arketing and Leadership Development Director Allyson Krull and Program Director

Collen Frein recently completed 24 hours of course instruction at Institute for Organization Management, a four-year nonprofit leadership training program in Madison, WI. Allyson completed her second year and Colleen finished her first year toward the IOM certification.

Since its commencement in 1921, the Institute program has been educating tens of thousands of association, chamber, and other nonprofit leaders on how to build stronger organizations, better serve their members and become strong business advocates. Institute’s curriculum consists of four weeklong sessions at five different university locations throughout the country. Through a combination of required courses and electives in areas such as leadership, advocacy, marketing, finance, and membership, Institute participants are able to enhance their own organizational management skills and add new fuel to their organizations, making them run more efficiently and effectively.

Institute for Organization Management is the professional development program of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation. It is the premier nonprofit professional development program for association and chamber professionals, fostering individual growth through interactive learning and networking opportunities.
