“At that same time, Jesus felt the joy that comes from the Holy Spirit” ~Luke 10:21a Salsa, tango or waltz? Dancing under the stars or dancing with the stars? Can you imagine Jesus…Savior of All and Light of the World…asking you to dance? Can you imagine Jesus…Savior of All and Light of the World, twirling and whirling with passion and delight? That’s just what Luke is describing! Let’s take a look at the setting. Jesus had chosen seventy-two followers and sent them out two by two to every town and village he would later visit. He gave them specific instructions about what to proclaim and how to behave. When they returned from their work, they were full of enthusiasm and passion! They took a risk and accomplished much and could hardly wait to share their news. Can’t you just hear them? ―Lord, we can hardly believe it! Wow! It happened exactly as you said it would. Even the demons were subject to us in your name! What a rush!‖ The Greek word describing the joy these followers felt is chara, meaning just what we might assume--rejoicing and gladness. But the word used for the joy Jesus felt at that same time is markedly different. The Greek translation of Jesus’ joy is agalliao. This word decodes as ―to exalt, leap for joy, to show one’s joy by leaping and skipping. In the Psalms, this rendering is often written as ―rejoicing with song and dance.‖ The essence of the joy that Jesus felt was when chara gets physical! With the exciting news his passionate followers shared---that ordinary people accomplish great things, picture Jesus jumping up and down with delight! Picture Jesus whirling and twirling under the stars to the song of praises being sung on an impromptu and sandy dance floor! Jesus invites each one of us into the dance of life. So start tapping your foot. Hear the musical strains stirring passion and enthusiasm. Grab your shoes for a salsa, tango, or waltz. Feel yourself move with boldness and rhythm. And know that you’re not merely dancing under the stars, or even with the starsyour partner is the Light of the World. Observations from the Deck Dance with Passion by Pastor Tom Grevlos

Live…a lot. Unleash yourself upon the world and go! Go now!! Fly free in the frowning face of convention. Giggle! No, laugh…no, howl... as if you’ve never grown up. Understand this is not a dress rehearsal; the story of your life is unfolding! Take it all in. Yes, every last flower and every single breath, and by all means, whatever you do, live with irresponsible passion! DANCE the DANCE OF LIFE! Most of us have been taught that following Jesus is about living ―correctly.‖ That understanding describes ―religion,‖ not responsive, exuberant faith! Jesus called us to come and follow so that we would live fully. The passion of Jesus Christ did not happen so that our lives would be dull, uneventful, and passion-less. Hardly! The abundant life promised is to recognize love and the presence of God in the ordinary and extraordinary. Living a life of passion begins when we say YES to the God who is passionate about us! Remembering that promise, how can we fail to express such passion back to God in how we are compassionate to others? How does it look to live without passion? Michael Yaconelli, in his book Dangerous Wonder, speaks to a loss of passion in our life story: ―The absence of passion results in a grim pallor over our lives, the absence of highs and lows. When there is no passion, we live our lives in the smoky fog of sameness. Life loses its distinctions and we no longer see the nuances, the tiny differences. We no longer feel our feelings. They become dull and insensitive. Life without passion is life without texture, contrast, and depth. We walk through life trancelike, going through the motions of living - emotionless, getting through each day ending our lives loose and directionless, busy doing something that turns out to be nothing, focusing on what doesn’t matter, missing what does.‖

God’s Spirit at work in the world needs a faith community that will dance with passion. A faith community needs people of God who will move to the rhythm of the gospel drumbeat, taking faithful risks, exhibiting a spirit of joy and playfulness in living…for this is it! Let us dance because in Jesus the victory is won. Start tapping your toes, move your feet, clap your hands, and celebrate what God has done and is doing. May the fire of Jesus’ presence and love once again fill our lives with passion and adventure. Grab your partner and let’s dance!

A New Team Member for

Children’s Ministry

Who is that familiar face around the Children’s ministry team? That’s Sarah Swindall! Sarah is a life-long member of OSLC. She has been involved in many activities including the choirs and youth activities throughout her formative years. Where has Sarah been? She is a student at Augustana College, Rock Island studying English and focusing on writing. She anticipates her role as a ―CA‖ community advisor in the dorm next fall to be a great experience. What is she doing in the Children’s Ministry? Sarah is working with Children’s Faith Formation writing, preparing, and leading the mychurch Camp for elementary kids. She is also helping with VBS and supervising the preschool church school at Celebration! She wanted the opportunity to know and work with different generations and ministries at OSLC. This internship offered her a chance to get to know the community in a new way. Her goal for the future is to work in a high school ministry in the church. Welcome Sarah!

Sounds Like Love The Eagle’s Wings and Hearts In Puppetry Ministry tour was a huge success this year, as it always is. The puppet team visited Puppets in Education, where the puppet team received some tips on how to make their puppets more animated.

The tour group was invited to a house of a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Jericho, VT for a home-cooked backyard BBQ! It was incredibly generous of them to cook for everyone and the youth had a wonderful time hanging out in their back-yard. The kids really enjoyed their hospitality and we couldn’t thank them enough.

A concert was for the good people of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Jericho, VT.

Senior Posts From The Tour Blog Taylor Musial here to tell you about the amazing time I’ve had on tour this year.

On Ministry tour we’ve been given opportunities to meet new people and have times when we’ve had to go out of our comfort zone to meet others who have been impacted by God. Every church that we’ve sung at has welcomed us with open arms and given us a place to stay. There have

been a couple times that I wondered, how could we give back and help others just like the host homes and the people we’ve met on tour. So when I heard on Tuesday that we would be doing a service project I was really excited! We found out that we would be helping at a garage that gave people who were less fortunate the opportunity to have things like a car, bike, etc. Good News Garage was a success with the choir because we worked together to get things done. It felt good giving back to people who really needed it. Sometimes living in such a good area we tend to forget that life is not so easy for some and we take for granted the gifts we get from our parents. This service project was worth all the dirt and grime that I got into because I knew that it was worth every ounce of work. Especially when we got onto the bus to leave, I saw a family of 3 little kids picking up bikes with big smiles on their faces. It felt good to know that with a little effort you really can impact someone’s life. Times like these are the ones that I’ll miss the most when I go to college in the fall. Eagles Wing’s has become another family to me and has changed how I appreciate a lot of things. Each tour is a life-changing experience that really makes you stop and think about what is really important in life. Peace Out! See you soon!!!-Taylor Salutations, this is Billy Michael. This trip has been so awesome; probably my favorite one yet. Over this year I’ve grown close with so many of the guys and girls of this choir and this tour has only brought me closer to them. There have been many fun times this tour. One time in particular was the first time all the seniors got together to brainstorm for crowns for everyone else in the ministry. We were throwing out the most random and craziest names for people and the ridiculous comments people were making up was hilarious. Somehow we were able to finish crowns with good names for everyone, but the thought process that went behind them was even more hilarious. Word is bond, Billy Michael Take the time to read more of the wonderful blog postings that the seniors wrote. You will see how God works in wonderful ways at www.oslcministrytour.com.

Mega Garage Sale 2010 -

Two Perfect Days! By Sandy Martinich Thanks to the table and tent filling contributions of untold numbers and the many hours worked by approximately 250 volunteers, this year’s Mega Garage Sale gross income was over $33,000. With most prices in the dime to $25 scope, thousands of items were sold, ranging from mugs to snow blowers. With the death that Friday of John Wooden, well respected NCAA basketball coach, many of his quotes are being remembered. ―You can't live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you."

An enormous thank you to all who donated goods, spent hours sorting, pricing, selling, baking, cooking and serving, setting-up and cleaning-up. A successful sale is only possible when we all work together to help others. We, the sale co-chairs, recognize the tremendous group effort. We helped the families by providing bargains in this stressful economy. We helped people with their needs through the caring ministries of the OSLC. We can never repay you who have given. May you live blessed, perfect days. Here are some of the stories of caring and helping: Tila, nine months pregnant, new to America, from Bhutan,

and mentored by our refugee ministry, shopped for her baby and for winter coats on Thursday. She gave birth to her baby girl, Cristina, Friday.

Young Kyle became a ―personal shopper‖ sorting through mounds of clothes to find perfect shoes and an adorable outfit for a three-month old girl.

Boy Scouts from Troop 107 helped at the check out line, offering help carrying purchases for many harried shoppers.

A local Girl Scout found items to complete a ―Welcome to America‖ Pack she has put together for a refugee family.

Families on ―half price‖ day, filled bags as they selected clothes from many boxes and racks for toddler to Grandma. Many languages spoken yet many faces smiling in the language known to all.

Backpacks found for the OSLC ministry to Loaves and Fishes for the back-to-school supplies. Money raised will be divided among OSLC’s Good Samaritan Fund, Pastor’s discretionary fund and Church missions for local and global and community organizations.

It’s About The Kids!

By Pastor Mark This is one of the last evenings before me and the five others return to the states. For so many years my knowledge of our mission partnership with Slovakia has been focused on the church we helped to build in Nitra and the Bible College and dormitories we helped to rebuild in Martin. These are great stories worth celebration and part of Our Saviour’s mission history. But there is a new story being written. And it’s all about the kids in Slovakia. This is probably not a stretch for you to imagine, but I preferred hanging in the classroom with the children than hanging with the mayor of the city. The kids are amazing. Their English rocks!!! My Slovakian does not! There is so

much joy and excitement in the classrooms it is simply contagious. And, at first I took that for granted. I mean ... c’mon, all kids laugh and have a good time in school. Right? Wrong! Parents pay the tuition to send their kids to the elementary school on the CCE campus even though they could go to public school for free. Why? It’s the atmosphere of this Christian elementary school that is worth paying for. The children are being taught by people who love Jesus. Bohdan Hroboň and the other entrepreneurial leaders of the CCE have assumed the responsibility of training and influencing the next generation of Christian thinkers and leaders.

250 children attend the elementary school. Administration has to turn down close to 200 children a year because of space limitations. And every year they add a new grade (next year it is 7th grade) and pray the classroom space will be available.

Now, my job and the team of people who went have been given the task to tell the story to others. And there’s much more to tell. But for now, when it comes to our mission partners in Slovakia, the message is simply this… ―It’s all about the kids!‖

If you’d like to hear more, let’s get together for coffee. [email protected].

Karen and Paul Petersen’s

Adoption Journey Since we were starting a family a little later in life, a d o p t i n g seemed like one option. We attended 5 or 6 meetings at v a r i o u s a d o p t i o n agencies. We

started out thinking about China or Korea, as we both have relatives that have been adopted from those countries. We also had good friends that were going through a pretty difficult process of adopting from Guatemala. We learned about The Cradle and open adoption by talking with a couple of different friends who had adopted domestically. We also made the decision that we would stop trying to start a family ourselves. Our infertility journey ran the gamut of science and emotions, and dealing with all that we lost was devastating. We realized that we needed to focus on one or the other, not both. Our first meeting was in January, 2009 and we dove right in. There was a lot of research that needed to be done, and we finished all the paperwork and finally got on the list in July, 2009. And the wait began… We were contacted on a few situations but didn't feel comfortable about them. Saying no was incredibly hard. We questioned whether or not we were making the right decision and talked with our counselor about how we felt. That helped us feel confident about those decisions. Then, we got a call in January, 2010. After considering the information we learned about the birth mother, we allowed her to see our profile. In a few days we learned that she picked us! Wow, what an exciting moment. It felt as if we had just learned that we were pregnant. She was due in late February so we only had a month to get ready! Between all the getting ready we had one of the most important meetings of our life – meeting with the mother. We were so nervous. She was too. It went very

well. It’s at these moments where you get the feeling of what's really going on – the selflessness of wanting to give your child to another family for a better life. It's a very emotional time. The power of adoption is incredible. The mother was a week overdue and we were all on pins and needles. Then, we finally got a call...that she had just had a baby! We were so nervous when we got to the hospital we forgot the camera in the car. It was a surreal moment when we walked into the hospital room. The mother was in bed and her friend was holding a little baby. Then her friend gave us the baby to hold – she was only 2 hours old. Wow! We visited for a while and then the mother’s parents came in. That was unexpected. We got an emotional hug from her mom thanking us for what we were doing. We had mutually decided on a direct placement, so the baby would be coming home with us before the surrender papers were signed. At first we were a little nervous, but as we got to know the mother we became more comfortable with that decision. Placement papers were signed, a bath was given, pictures were taken, and the next thing you know, we're driving a baby girl back home. When we got home we didn't know what to do! The big moment came after the phone call that told us the surrender papers were signed. With a sigh of relief we sent an announcement via email to all our friends. All in all, we'd just like to say what an amazing experience this has been! We have been so blessed with our little daughter, Sarah. We still have to pinch ourselves to make sure we're not dreaming

Trip to Israel Tim and Emily Fries headed to Israel this past month. Tim is working in the field assisting with the excavation and supervision of the new volunteers. Emily is in charge of the dig office, a job which includes organizing all of the finds they excavate. However, the dig is just the beginning of their adventure! After the excavation Tim will be entering a one year graduate program at the Hebrew University’s Rothberg International School. While Tim is in school, Emily has been offered an opportunity to assist the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Jordan and the Holy Land (ELCJHL) as the assistant to the director of the Lutheran schools. Tim and Emily will have constant access to the internet and will send email updates to any who wish to follow their adventures. You may send them emails at [email protected] or [email protected].

Wellness Tips to Help You Avoid

Summer Spoilers

By Saralea Holstrom, Advocate Parish Nurse

You might have a lot of fun things to do this summer, but heading to the emergency room is probably not high on your list. Here are 5 ways to help avoid that trip: 1. Don't get ill from your grill! This happens to be the peak season for food-borne illness. Wash your hands, use a meat thermometer, and store leftovers promptly. 2. Buzz Off! Insect bites can be painful and for some, life threatening. Check the label on insect repellents for safe use with children. 3. Play time! Bicycles, skateboards, scooters, etc. are all fun but all carry a common theme-HELMETS, need we say more? 4. Snap, crackle, pop! Fireworks are illegal in IL. Know the law and the dangers. Even sparklers need supervision with children and can cause harm due to the high temperature they reach, so be cautious. 5. Mower beware! Power lawn mowers can be a dangerous tool. Avoid injury by wearing sturdy, closed-toe shoes and remind your kids to do this too (no flip-flops when mowing). Use a mower that stops when the handle is let go, and NEVER let a child ride as a passenger on a riding mower. Yard work and gardening do's and don'ts: 1. When raking and digging, switch hands so you use both sides of your body and prevent blisters by wearing gloves. 2 Use sunscreen and a wide-brimed hat to protect yourself from sun's harm. 3 When lifting heavy items, bend at the knees and keep your back straight.
