THE RICHNESS OF LIFE IN CHRIST Today we have the beautiful story of the woman prom-ised a child, the wonderful exhortation about life in Christ, and a powerful instruction from Jesus. An embar-rassment of riches? Not if we take Jesus' words about "welcome" to heart. The many challenges and blessings offered to us today by Elisha, Paul, and Jesus should be cause for rejoicing, and welcomed heartily into our lives. And, like the great treat that they are, they should be en-joyed and shared generously with others. Today's reading from Romans was chosen very early in the liturgical life of the Church to be the sole apostolic instruction received by candidates for baptism at the Easter Vigil. This illustrates its importance as a core be-lief, and as a means of comprehending the story of the Resurrection. Christ's resurrection is not merely a story about something that he underwent once upon a time, but it is our story, the story of how we joined the other mem-bers of the one Body of Christ, the church. We were not only dead, but we were buried; not ultimately buried, but raised to eternal life with Christ.

Question of the Week

First Reading — Elisha promises a baby son to the hos-pitable woman (2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16a). Psalm — For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 89). Second Reading — We shall live in newness of life as Christ was raised from the dead (Romans 6:3-4, 8-11). Gospel — Whoever gives but a cup of cold water to an-other will surely be rewarded (Matthew 10:37-42).

Question for Children: How can you live as a follower of Jesus?

Question for Adults: What does this Gospel teach you about the cost of discipleship and how does it relate to your experi-ence so far?

Monday: Eph 2:19-22; Ps 117:1bc-2; Jn 20:24-29 Tuesday: Gn 19:15-29; Ps 26:2-3, 9-12; Mt 8:23-27; or, for Independence Day, any readings from the Mass “For the Country or a City,” nos. 882-886, or “For Peace and Justice,” nos. 887-891 Wednesday: Gn 21:5, 8-20a; Ps 34:7-8, 10-13; Mt 8:28-34 Thursday: Gn 22:1b-19; Ps 115:1-6, 8-9; Mt 9:1-8 Friday: Gn 23:1-4, 19; 24:1-8, 62-67; Ps 106:1b-5; Mt 9:9-13 Saturday: Gn 27:1-5, 15-29; Ps 135:1b-6; Mt 9:14-17; Sunday: Zec 9:9-10; Ps 145:1-2, 8-11, 13-14; Rom 8:9, 11-13; Mt 11:25-30

Treasures from our Tradition

It’s Independence Day week, and there is a link worth tracing between the Declaration of Independence and the language of liturgy. One of the signers of the Declaration on that July 4 long ago was Charles Carroll, probably the wealthiest man in the colonies and one of the few Catho-lics on the political scene. As a flourish to his signature, he sought to distinguish himself from other prominent citizens bearing the same name by penning “Charles Car-roll of Carrolltown”—a defiant “come and get me if you dare” postscript aimed at the British. Carroll’s brother John was a priest and patriot who in 1789 was given the task of organizing the Catholic Church in this country. By 1791 he had assembled a synod, or assembly of delegates, to launch that task for-mally. Archbishop Carroll wanted to gain acceptance of our faith by American people who mistrusted our customs and could not comprehend our liturgy. He made the amazing proposal to Rome that our liturgy should be prayed not in Latin, but in the vernacular, English. His wish was denied, but one hundred sixty years later, his deep desire helped the American bishops and scholars at the Second Vatican Council to win the vote in favor of the vernacular not just for the United States, but for the Church throughout the world. —Rev. Charismatic Renewal since 1971. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1975 and was ordained in 1985; he taught Mathematics at Loyola Marymount University prior to his entering the priesthood. The Spirit comes to conform us to the very life of God, to make us like him, so that we can live forever in the love of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit: “So we know and be-lieve the love God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him” (1 Jn4:16). Come and feel the presence of the living Lord that renews our heart to know God’s love and to live a holy life, with God’s goodness and grace.

PAGE 7 Decimotercer Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Which should we do? Turn our backs on our loved ones, or offer hospitality to all who come to us as Christ? Today we are told to do both, and yet there is no inherent contradiction here. Following Christ might mean that we need to be aware both that Christ comes first in our lives, and that losing our life for Christ’s sake means to find it. We also are reminded that when we were baptized, we died with Christ, to sin and to the pull of the world, and live with him in a new life. No contradiction, no necessary confusion. Just grace and hope.

DYING AND RISING The words of Saint Paul hit us smack in the face: “Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?” (Romans 6:3). This epistle is one of the choices to be read at Catholic funerals. It generally comes as some-

thing of a shock to the listeners. But the reading goes on to offer great comfort to us as Christians. “[w]e have died with Christ . . . we shall also live with him . . . raised from the dead, [Christ] dies no more . . . [Christ] lives for God . . . you too must think of yourselves as dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus.”

HOSPITALITY One of the ways we live in God is to extend God’s hospitality to all. As an old Irish rune says, “Often goes the Christ in the stranger’s guise.” The woman of Shunem offered hospitality to the prophet Elisha in the form of dinner and a place to stay. He rewarded her hospitality with the promise of a son. Christ explains to us just what hospitality means: “Whoever receives you receives me” and shall not lack for a reward. As theologian Paul Wadell teaches, when we offer hospitality, we not only offer food and drink, or a place to stay, or other kindness, we offer ourselves; we offer our attention to a stranger’s story, wherein we learn another person’s perspective, and in doing so we listen to God’s story. In warning us that “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me . . .” and also, “Whoever finds [their] life will lose it, and whoever loses [their] life for my sake will find it” Jesus proposes that we cultivate de-tachment from things that we now consider primary in our lives. Christ loves us and wants us to put him first before other commitments or desires. Our hospitality to strangers puts Christ before ourselves in just this way.

Please join us as we say

“Aloha” to our seminarian

Safeguard the Children

Did You Know? Creating boundaries for mobile phone Parents and caregivers may be more inclined during sum-mertime to allow children to use mobile phones, espe-cially when school is not in session. Consider the follow-ing tips to establish boundaries and help keep children safe when using a mobile phone: --Contact service provider to block internet access and calls from unapproved phone numbers. --Designate certain times that cell phone must be turned off (family meals, school hours, after 10 p.m.) --Insist that parental permission is required for the download of any and all apps. To request a copy of the VIRTUS article "What Age is Appropriate for Children to be Provided with a Cell Phone?" email [email protected] or call

Mustard Seed Mission Trip Are you interested in joining a mission trip this summer, to serve the abandoned and orphaned children of Mustard Seed

Communities? This organization was founded in King-ston, Jamaica in 1978, and cares for children with severe and mental disabilities. We will be traveling to Kingston, Jamaica, August 11-19, 2017, to pray, help, serve, and work with these children. All you need is an open heart and an open mind. All those 16 and older, are welcome to join. Please contact Cassandra Locano for more information ([email protected]).

What Age is Appropriate for Children to be Provided with a Cell Phone? (¿Qué edad es la apropiada para que los ni-ños puedan recibir un teléfono celular?) escriba a [email protected] o llame al (213) 637-7508.

The first Sunday of the month is Amen Sunday. Amen Sunday is an opportunity for us to celebrate and highlight the progress of our Capital Campaign. Dear Parish Family, Because We Care Food Pantry serves approximately 70 needy families per month by giv-ing them various grocery and toiletry items to help sustain their families for about 2 weeks.
