    Mga Biyayang mula sa

    Sakripisyo at Paglilingkod

    Czarjeff Laban

    Tasting Life

    Anthony De Mello

Before the young man began his studies, he wanted assurance from theMaster.

"Can you teach me the goal of human life?"

    "I cannot," replied the Master.

    "Or at least its meaning?"

    "I cannot."

"Can you indicate to me the nature of death and of life beyond the grave?"

    "I cannot."

The young man walked away in scorn. The disciples were dismayed thattheir Master had been shown up in a poor light.

Said the Master soothingly, "Of what is it to comprehend life's nature and

life's meaning if you have never tasted it? I'd rather you ate your puddingthan speculated on it."

    FREQUENTLY CALLED NOS.

Page 4 Volume 14 Issue 29One community living up the Gospel through the service of the Lord and our fellow men

TORONTO, JULY 15, 2009 (Zenit.org).- The themes of sheep andshepherding flow though the Scripture readings for the Sixteenth Sun-day in Ordinary Time (Year B). The moving Gospel story of Jesushaving compassion on the crowds that were "l ike sheep without ashepherd" helps us to focus on his ministry of teaching, reconcilingand shepherding.

Literature of antiquity often referred to the person responsible forguiding a community as a shepherd. Likewise, the Old Testamentfrequently described the Lord himself as the shepherd of his people.Individuals invoked him as "my shepherd" (Psalm 23:1), and the com-munity prayed to him as the "Shepherd of Israel" (Psalm 80:1).

In the New Testament, the image of the shepherd expresses greatauthority and responsibility. Nourishing the flock means that the shep-herd must protect them from heresy, ever ready to defend the sheepfrom marauders. John tells us that Jesus himself proclaimed that hefulfilled Israel's hope for the coming of the good shepherd: "I am thegood shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for thesheep" (John 10:11).

When Jesus withdraws with his disciples to a deserted place to rest,he attracts a great number of people to follow them. Toward this peo-ple of the new exodus Jesus is moved with pity; he satisfies their spiri-tual hunger by teaching them many things, thus gradually showinghimself the faithful shepherd of a new Israel.

When the Scriptures describe Jesus as having pity on his flock be-cause they were "like sheep without a shepherd" in Mark 6:30-34,such an image is not original to Jesus in the Gospels. The image isdrawn from Ezekiel 34, where God unleashes his anger at the shep-herds of Israel who have fattened themselves on the weak and vul-nerable, instead of caring for them (Ezekiel 34:10-12).

    Sheep without a shepherd

Jesus' compassion is much more than a fleeting or temporary feeling

of regret or sorrow. It is rather a deep anguish, a gut-wrenching typeof anxiety and sorrow over the condition of people. Jesus was de-scribing the spiritual lives of those who were living outside of the sal-vation so freely offered by God. Jesus felt gut-wrenching anguish overthe souls of these people who were facing spiritual starvation withoutsomeone to feed them, teach them, and lead them to true spiritualnourishment. They were in danger without a shepherd to protect themfrom false teaching. Like sheep without the good shepherd, they werealone and vulnerable to the attacks of the evil one, who roams aroundlike a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

"Like sheep without a shepherd" is an accurate description of thespiritual lives of many 21st-century Christians in the world today. Theexpression describes many of our contemporaries who are direc-tionless, helpless, and very vulnerable to the seductions and attacksof the evil one. "Sheep without a shepherd" are more than just a littlelost. They are more than just a little vulnerable. They are facing dan-ger and destruction.

    Jesus' Compassion

Jesus saw the sick and his compassion healed them. He saw thosepossessed by demons and his compassion freed them. He told thestory of a king who was owed a huge debt by his servant. When theservant could not pay, the king ordered him thrown into slavery, alongwith his family. When the servant pleaded for mercy the king "had

compassion" on him and forgave the huge debt.

Jesus spoke about a man going down from Jerusalem to Jericho. That poor fellow fell among thieves who beat him, robbed him and lefthim to die. Two high-ranking religious officials passed by him, but aSamaritan stopped and "had compassion" on him. He bandaged theman's wounds and carried him to an inn where he nursed him throughthe night. The next day he paid the bill and gave the innkeeper hiscredit line, saying, "If he needs more, charge it to me."

Who can forget the thought-provoking story of the younger son whotook his inheritance and squandered it in loose living? One day he"came to himself" and returned to his father's house, not hoping to berestored as a son, but wanting only to be hired as a servant. His fa-ther saw him coming and "had compassion" on him. Before the soncould even utter his speech of repentance, the father placed on him aring and robe and shoes and called for a royal feast.

The compassion of Jesus heals and feeds, forgives huge debts, nurses hurt bodies back to health and welcomes home sinners, re-storing them to a place of honor. Jesus will not let his compassionstay with God or in heaven. He commands us: "Be compassionate as

    your Father is compassionate. "

Jesus did a lot more than just feel compassion for those in today'sGospel story from Mark 6. His strong emotion moved him to act, farbeyond what any shepherd would be expected to do for his sheep. The authentic shepherd, who models his or her life on Jesus, mustlove the people entrusted to him and imitate Jesus.

Where will we find such compassion for ourselves?

From time to time, despite our best intentions, we find ourselvesamong those in need, those who are like sheep without a shepherd. At times we ask ourselves: "Where on earth can we find this compas-sion to share with others?" I have learned that only in solitude beforeGod, faced only with ourselves, can we learn the compassion of God.Perhaps it is not by accident that in the thick of his ministry and bur-

dened by the unrelenting needs and demands of the crowd, Jesuscalled his disciples to join him in the desert: "Come away to a de-serted place all by yourselves and rest awhile."

Could it not be the same for us, that away from the hustle and bustleof the everyday demands, we retreat in order to wrestle with our ownhearts before God? And there we learn mercy and become in our daybearers of the compassion of Christ.

    Leading people out

One of the most powerful and moving reflections on the theme ofcompassionate shepherding is found in Benedict XVI's inauguralhomily of his Petrine Ministry on April 24, 2005:

"The pastor must be inspired by Christ's holy zeal: for him it is not amatter of indifference that so many people are living in the desert. And there are so many kinds of desert. There is the desert of poverty, the desert of hunger and thirst, the desert of abandonment, of loneli-ness, of destroyed love.

"There is the desert of God's darkness, the emptiness of souls nolonger aware of their dignity or the goal of human life. The externaldeserts in the world are growing, because the internal deserts havebecome so vast.

In today's Gospel the disciples come home exulting in their firstmissionary experience. Jesus invites them to make a retreat, "Youmust come away to some lonely place all by yourselves and restfor a while." In our own times people continue to go apart to makeretreats. In recent years the trends in retreats have been changing.

The first of the trends, basic to most of the others, is that the em-phasis has moved from morality tospirituality. In the days prior to Vati-can II, most retreats assumed andemphasized that things weren't go-ing all that well in the lives of peoplewho came. At the top of the agenda, you would find awareness of sin andthe need for wiping the slate cleanbefore returning to a sinful world. Butin the wake of Vatican II, interest inthis kind of retreat died out, and theretreat movement might have gonewith it.

But from the ashes rose retreats with

a new emphasis - spirituality. Thefocus became spirituality and prayerexperience rather than the heavymorality of the past.

The interest today is in a more holis-tic spirituality. That is, people are notas preoccupied with the vertical linkbetween God and the soul, but areconcerned with all aspects of thehuman and their connection with thedivine. In other words, this spiritualityconcentrates on the whole person,on all of the person's life.Because holistic spirituality also includes the body, often seen in

the past as the enemy of the spiritual life, several retreat directorsnow include exercise programs in their retreats. Some would bringin a nutritionist or a doctor to speak during retreats, while still oth-ers have artists and musicians participating in retreats in an effortto help achieve integration.

However, the most remarkable trend in today's retreats is thebursting interest in contemplative prayer. No doubt many tradi-tional prayers - such as the rosary and rote prayers featuring lotsof words, memorized or read from a book - are still in evidenceduring retreats. But the trend now is very much toward the con-templative word-less thought-less style of prayer, a form of prayerassociated in the past with religious communities and the East, but now gaining popularity among lay people in western or west-

    ernized countries.

While interest in prayer and silence and solitude remains veryhigh, an increasing number of people are coming to retreats be-cause they are suffering in some way and are looking for help. They are hurting and looking for healing. They can often behelped to healing through an individually directed retreat or

through a peer co-counseling typeof group retreat.

But there is another sense inwhich the spirituality one finds onretreats has a holistic character. Itnot only emphasizes the individ-ual as a whole, but creation as awhole, and, human beings as partof that creation. Further, this em-phasis says creation reveals theCreator, and, indeed, is the firstsource of revelation and whereGod can be experienced.

One reason the retreat directorsmay be turning toward creationspirituality is that its strong this-world dimension forms a basis fora social justice focus, an area inwhich efforts have been inconsis-tent up to now.

    Not surprisingly, the traditional

retreat of the past whose content

tended to be the same, also had a

    format that was considered more

or less standard. There are many

new formats today in which participants don't just listen passively,

but participate actively and interact with each other. Often thisapproach is called process. It emphasizes helping people make

discoveries usually about realities already present in their own

lives, rather than sharing new information. What's more, in their

dialogue participants go beyond discussing ideas to a deeper

level of sharing their personal feelings, experiences and faith. This

process is particularly powerful in retreats focusing on participants

with a common hurt - such as the divorced or widowed dealing

    with their loss.

Paint you in most colorful way

ANONG MISYON MOANONG MISYON MOANONG MISYON MOANONG MISYON MO

    Amie Sison

At kailan darating

At naaalala

sa oras ng pangangailangan. Kaya siguro binibigyan tayo ng pag-

subok ni Lord upang makausap natin sya. At minsan binibigyan

    maaari tayong manalangin.

Recruitment Agencies Frowns on New POEA Rule

Groups of recruitment agencies openly aired their protests against new memorandums from the Philippine OverseasEmployment Administration (POEA) that adds 44 overseas jobs to the classification of low- and semi-skilled over-

    seas Filipino workers (OFWs).

Groups of recruitment agencies openly aired their protests against new memorandums from the Philippine OverseasEmployment Administration (POEA) that adds 44 overseas jobs to the classification of low- and semi-skilled over-seas Filipino workers(OFWs). The new POEA rule also means stricter visa processing and additional requirements foroccupations that belong to the said category.

According to the Federated Associations of Manpower Exporters (Fame), an organization of recruitment agencies, thenew POEA rule is not necessary because it would slow down the hiring process, thus would result to the decreased

deployment of OFWs. The FAME also said that POEA created the new rules without seeking the opinion and approvalof the manpower agencies.

Under the said memorandums, employment contracts of OFWs belonging in the low and semi-skilled category wouldnow have to go through the screening of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) before it will be processed. The

work contracts also need to be authenticated by the Philippine Embassy in the host country.

The president of Fame, Eduardo Mahiya said The recruitment industry is already over-regulated, strangulating the

sector with more rules that are not conducive to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyos thrust to create more jobsabroad.

Mahiya added, What is the use of all these marketing missions which the President herself attends if after cominghome, we, the direct providers of overseas employment opportunities are prevented from deploying more?

Recruitment agencies also complained that the government agency provided no transition period for the implementa-tion of the new rule, thus affecting even job orders that are already for approval.

The MCs were issued last June 15 and implemented right away (July 1). It was formulated without due consultation,

and there is not even a transition period to allow the stakeholders to prepare, he explained

A recruitment consultant Emmanuel Geslani also said that the POEA memorandums would result in a maze of formsand certifications from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (Owwa), the Technical Education and Skills De-velopment Authority (Tesda), labor attaches, valid visas/work permits, individual employment contracts.

According to Geslani, the additional requirement would discourage foreign recruitment offices to hire OFWs especiallyin the Middle East.

Geslani said, The end result will be a massive drop in deployment starting by the third quarter of 2009."On the other hand, the POEA explained that Memorandum Circular 5 and 6 was imposed with the objective to furtherprotect OFWs from exploitation and abuse. The POEA Chief, Jennifer Manalili said that the 44 overseas jobs added inthe June 15 circular are the most exploited. This is the reason why they required POLO verification prior to approvalof a job order.

The POEA found an ally with the group, Center for Migrant Advocacy (CMA). The executive director of CMA, ElleneSana said in an e-mail interview by GMANews.Tv, "We should be happy that POEA is concerned with the rights andwelfare of our low, semi-skilled workers and wants to protect them from reprocessing,"

The new POEA rule was also welcomed by another umbrella organization of recruitment agencies, the Philippine As-sociation of Service Exporters, Inc. (Pasei). According to Victor Fernandez, PASEI president, this is "just a one-timedifficulty."

Fernandez said, "From my point of view, that is the best way to do it."
