It’s a small thing, often over-looked amid major items like furniture and paint colours when you’re decor-ating a room.

But don’t underestimate the power of household hardware.

These small items — door-knobs, drawer pulls, cabinet-door handles — are “the jewelry” that can add style and sparkle to any space, says New York-based interior designer Young Huh. Just as the right necklace can turn a simple dress into a fashion statement, a striking new set of knobs on an old cabinet, or vin-tage crystal doorknobs can bring a dose of style to your home with minimal expense, she says.

In many homes, these hardware items are mostly ignored. Inter-ior doors may have mismatched, inexpensive knobs that were installed at different times.

Drawers and cabinets may have functional but unappealing knobs or bars.

Swapping these items out is often easy, and Los Angel-es-based designer Betsy Burn-ham says her clients are fre-quently surprised at the visual

impact of something as simple as carefully chosen hardware. Last summer, she added door pulls made of rope tied in small naut-ical knots to the built-in cabinets at a California beach house, inexpensively adding a dash of personality to the space.

Here, three interior-design experts — Huh, Burnham and designer Brian Patrick Flynn of Flynnside Out Productions — offer advice on choosing the right hardware and using it to co-ordinate the look of a home.

TRENDSOne of the most popular styles

now is lacquered or aged brass. “Ten years ago,” Huh says, “it was all about nickel: brushed nickel, shiny nickel. Now it’s the resurgence of brass.”

Designers are using “bold tones, and things that look worn,” she says, by installing unlacquered brass that tarnish-es over the course of a year, or paying extra for “pre-antiqued” brass that already has a colour-ful patina.

Flynn uses a lot of brass, espe-cially “satin or antique finishes, because they’re more sophis-ticated and less formal than pol-ished, glossy styles.”

In addition, “a newer option I’m seeing and totally love is matte black hardware,” he says.

“This is excellent for modern kitchens or for adding dark con-trast to an otherwise light and bright space.

“The matte finish helps camou-flage any scratches or smudges you’d deal with on glossy black pulls and knobs.”

Another dramatic favourite of Flynn’s: unlacquered iron.

UPGRADES AND CHANGESBurnham and her staff

recently gave a preteen girl’s bedroom a more grown-up look just by “changing the vibe from kind of old-fashioned to Bohemian.”

Their changes included a new set of striped, bone-inlay knobs from Anthropologie that gave the furniture a funky appeal.

The same approach can make grown-up furniture look just right for a baby or child’s room: If you are turning a guest room into a nursery, Burnham says, change the cabinetry hardware to something “sweet or pink or shiny,” or choose knobs shaped like birds or other animals.

If you’re shopping, Huh suggests hunting for an affordable piece of furniture and then making it look more expen-sive by adding dramatic hardware.

The range of available styles is enormous, and shopping for new or vin-tage items online is easy. Even if you’d prefer to buy in person, Burnham says a bit of online research “makes your creativity kind of percolate a little bit.”

“Just pay attention to dimensions,” she warns, because you “may not real-ize that in person, an inch-and-a-half sphere is quite large.”

Measure the size and location of the holes left behind by your current hardware, she says. If you buy replacements that don’t match, drill new holes and fill the old ones.

And amid all the focus on style, do choose hardware that is easy to grab and use.

CONSISTENT OR CONTRASTING

Take note of all the hard-ware and metals in a room, including lamp bases, and decide whether you want them to match or whether you’d like to inject some dramatic contrast.

Either method works, as long as it’s done delib-erately. “If you don’t do it consciously,” Huh says, “then it could all look real-ly messy.”

“You don’t want to have shiny brass in one case and unlacquered in another and nickel hardware on something else,” she continues.

“Having similar tones is a good way to start. When you feel more expert, then mix metals.”

In a kitchen, “your finish-es should probably match,” Burnham says. “You wouldn’t want the finishes to be fighting just a little.”

GET CRAFTY“In addition to pulls and

knobs, I think nailheads can make a huge impact in a space,” Flynn says.

“After updating cabinets and drawers, I’ll also give closet or interior doors a unique look by adding a nailhead border around the perimeter.

“This can elevate a basic hall closet into an architec-tural feature.”

You can buy nailheads at a craft store, or roofing tacks from a hardware store.

Then cut fabric batting to size and use spray adhesiveto cover the door with the batting.

Stretch your fabric across the door and attach it with staples.

Finally, place nailheads over the staples and secure in place with a mallet or hammer.

“Although it may seem small, hardware can make the biggest impact of all elements in a space,” Flynnsays.

“With so many styles and finishes to choose from andso many available price points, there’s no reason not to update hardware regularly to give a room a fresh new look.”

Urban industry inspires gritty furniture styleMARY BETH BRECKENRIDGE AKRON BEACON JOURNAL

AKRON, Ohio — Dominic Fal-cione’s gritty studio on down-town Akron’s western fringe once warehoused industrial parts. His materials include met-als and rough wood. His inspira-tion sometimes comes from the urban infrastructure.

Yet from those come objects of function and beauty.

Falcione is a sculptor and fab-ricator whose business, Rubber City Fab, creates furniture, light-ing and other items for homes and commercial spaces. Most are commissioned pieces, but Falcione is not just a craftsman carrying out others’ instructions. He’s known for bringing an artis-tic vision and a keen attention to detail to his work.

“It always ends up being a mix between designer and fabrica-tor,” said Karen Starr, an Akron interior designer who often contracts with Falcione to build furniture for clients of her Hazel Tree Interiors. Typically she’ll tell him the function of the piece, the scale she needs and her aes-thetic parameters, “but it’s his design from there,” she said.

Falcione’s explanation is more self-effacing.

“Things come up,” he said, “and I can figure out how to make them.”

That’s what happened when he won the contract to furnish the Bit Factory, an arm of the Akron Global Business Accelerator that supports new technology com-panies. Falcione had the oppor-tunity to both design the layout and create the furnishings, a rare combination of skills he relished.

The collaborative work space is in downtown’s Canal Place, the old B.F. Goodrich factory complex. Falcione honoured its industrial pedigree by leaving ceiling pipes exposed and cover-ing the cracked concrete floors with only a clear finish, but he used movable partitions to define

rooms within the open area and imbued the space with a modern feel and an energizing glow of light.

Large tables called work sta-tions are each topped by a slab of walnut with its natural edges left intact, which hides electric-al outlets and provides a place to mount arms for computer monitors. Sheer panels framed by raw wood diffuse the light from overhead fixtures and are interspersed with metal panels bent into angular shapes. Glass-topped occasional tables in a casual seating area have clever metal bases that can be turned

on their sides to change tables’ height.

Light glows from within angu-lar partitions and tall wood light-ing fixtures called fire lamps. The partitions have a crisscross design inspired by bridge truss-es, a design Falcione also used for the metal bases of the work stations. The light is a decorative element in itself. “When you introduce light, light is kind of like a living thing,” Falcione explained. “The light kind of gives the object life.”

The space showcases the mod-ern industrial look he gravitates toward, a sort of refined rough-ness. But he can create items in a range of styles, depending on the customers’ wishes. His versatil-ity, he believes, is his strength.

Visitors to an Akron First Night celebration this year might remember the light wall he created with colorful plastic pegs made from pharmacy vials, sort of like a giant Lite-Brite toy. His public work also includes the lighted, textured sign at Angel Falls Coffee Co. in Highland Square and bike racks in Kent, some with abstract forms and one with a peace sign motif.

Falcione typically designs his pieces on a computer using the design software Solidworks but uses the traditional tools of metalworking and woodworking to carry out his vision — grind-

ers and wire welders, table saws and drills. Much of his creating is done with simple hand tools, and he contracts out complex work such as laser cutting that requires expensive equipment he doesn’t have in his shop.

Falcione was trained at the Uni-versity of Akron’s Mary Schiller Myers School of Art, where he worked as studio manager after graduating with a major in sculpture. He also worked for about five years for Akron sculp-tor John Comunale, with whom he still collaborates.

“I put out some beautiful work when he was here with me,” Comunale said.

Falcione, he said, has a crisp design style and a meticulous nature to his work.

Designer Starr has hired Fal-cione to create a number of pieces, including a conference table made from 10-foot-tall, brass and aluminum bank doors and a light over a billiard table that’s reminiscent of gears, but with gentler, more refined lines.

What sets him apart is his craftsmanship and attention to detail, she said. When he designed a bookshelf with a Frank Lloyd Wright feel, he spent so much time on the computer rendering to show to her clients that the finished piece turned out exactly as they envisioned it.
