Two innocent children bludgeoned to death

In what is believed to be one of the most gruesome killings in Vhembe, two innocent children, aged fi ve and three years, were mercilessly beaten to death at Makonde.

The two children, Thinawanga Munyai (5) and her little brother Justice Thagwana (3), were bludgeoned to death with a knobkierie. Thohoyandou police spokesperson Major Mashudu Malelo confi rmed that they are still searching for Prince Budeli-Vele (45), who is suspected of killing the children. The suspect is said to be the father of the three-year-old Justice.

Circumstances surrounding the gruesome incident are still vague and the victims’ mother is still receiving counselling at the local trauma cen-tre. The rumour going around in the village is that Budeli-Vele, who works in Gauteng, came back home and allegedly found the mother of the two with another man. The suspect, who is not a resident of Makonde, but from Nzhelele-Milaboni, is said to have vent-ed his anger on the innocent children. He is alleged to have run away and has not been located so far.

The incident has left stakeholders, the traditional leadership and organizations in a state of insecurity as people fear that the man might come and do more harm in the community.

According to the next-door neighbour,

Ms Azwitamisi Madzivhela, it was between 00:30 and 01:00 when the chil-dren’s mother, Ms Ndidzulafhi Thag-wana, asked her assistance to rescue the children “because Budeli-Vele wants to kill them.” She added that the mother of the two was on her way to meet the po-lice at the main road to report the threat against her children.

“When I reached the house, I found the children, Thinawanga and Justice, lying next to each other, covered with a blanket. As I tried to wake them, they were not responding. It was only when I switched on the light from my phone that I realized that the children were dead and they were covered in blood. I then called another neighbour, Dzivhu-luwani Rantsana, who came and also confi rmed that the children were dead,” explained Madzivhela.

The children’s aunt, Ms Joyce Netshiavha, said that tension had been simmering between the two. She further indicated that she had received a call in the early hours of Wednesday from one of the relatives, informing her of the incident. “I stay at another part of the

village, but I rushed to the scene and what I saw there was shocking. There was blood everywhere in the room.” She added that the tiny bodies were wrapped in a blanket “as if nothing had happened to them.” - Continues on page 2

A clearly distraught accident victim, Karabo Rathongwa (14) of Madombidzha, photopraphed waiting for an ambulance after the accident. The bus ended up next to a fence post after the accident.

Passengers injured in bus accident on Madombidzha roadSeveral of the 65 passengers on a bus travelling from Louis Trichardt to the Madombidzha area sustained injuries when the bus crashed into other vehicles and eventually ended up next to a fence.

The injured were rushed to the Louis Trichardt Memorial hospital, but most of them were discharged after being treated for bruises and scratches.

The incident occurred last Thurs-day on the Sinthumule road. The bus was transporting commuters to vil-lages such as Madombidzha, Magau and Rathidili.

According to one of the passengers, Ms Takalani Makhitha from Madom-bidzha, commuters complained to the driver, saying that the bus was over-loaded. The driver apparently ignored their complaints and kept on driving. As far as the accident is concerned, she only remembers that “there was a huge cloud of dust and we could not even see what was happening. I

strongly believe that we were saved by the grace of God.”

She suffered minor injuries to her head and a fractured left foot. “This is the most horrible experience of my life,” she added. Another eyewitness, Ms Julia Musethla, explained that the bus first hit a car and then sped out of control into a bakkie. “When we saw the bus hitting a car at high speed, we screamed and, as if that was not enough, the bus also came straight to a (another) car and suddenly collided with the bakkie,” she said.

The driver of the bakkie, Mr Kassie de Lange, said that he was turning into his farm at Belkado when the accident occurred. He said that he didn’t know what had happened, because the bus came from behind, driving in the same direction as they did.

According to Const Irene Radzilani from the local SAPS, the accident oc-curred after the bus driver lost control and hit a bakkie that was coming from the same direction. “We have opened

a case of reckless and negligent driv-ing against the driver. Further charges may be brought against him, pending the outcome of police investigations,” she said.

The continuous spate of fatal road

accidents in the region is fast becom-ing a major concern. Last Wednesday, seven people died when a taxi collid-ed with a truck at Musina and a further 11 people were admitted to hospital.

Crime

“We hope the police will do their job”(From page 1)The local Sanco chairperson,

Ms Khwatheleni Rambuda, said that they were living in fear as the suspect had not been arrest-ed so far. "We hope the police will do their job and bring the perpetrator to book," she said.

The senior local traditional leader, Thovhele Vho-Tshi-lidzi Edward Ravhura, who came to offer his condolences to the family, said he was very disturbed by the incident. “We are worried that people are not sharing their problems with oth-

ers and they end up committing crimes. There are many struc-tures that are meant to assist people with problems and it is done free of charge.

There are elders who are al-ways ready to assist and people should confide in them for an amicable solution,” he said.

Ravhura further indicated that he was worried that the man might pose a further dan-ger as he had not been arrested as yet. “We are making an appeal for the community to be calm and give the law a chance. Those who might come across the suspect should report him to the police and not take the law into their own hands.”

Mr Tshilidzi Masikhwa, a sector manager at the Thohoy-andou Victim Empowerment Programme, said they were worried about the rising num-ber of such incidents in the community. “We are available all the time to assist those with problems but people seem not to take us seriously. We cannot allow the loss of life by men who are supposed to care for women and children. We are planning to intensify our pro-grammes and have dialogues with men in this area,” he said.

The two were buried in a joint funeral on Tuesday.

House music star turns political agentTendamudzimu Dagada, an anchor of the region's best-known gospel ensemble, Wor-ship House, recently openly declared his membership of the ANC and said that he would assist the organization in its campaigns in future.

Dagada, popularly known as Tenda, is known as a staunch Christian and he recently released a monster house album, Deeper Love. During a recent event to promote his album, he left many fans eating out of his hands and asking for more. Backed by two dancers, he became an instant hit with his per-formance in front of the chairperson of the ANC in the Vhembe region and the execu-tive mayor of Vhembe, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, political stalwarts Dean Tshenuwani Farisani, former MPs Tovhowani Tshivhase and Tshif-hiwa Muofhe, ANC branch chairperson Alex Nemakonde and many youths.

"I have kept my membership a secret for some time now and I feel I would not be

doing justice by not declaring where I stand. I am going to help the ANC in all its campaigns, starting from today. I am avail-ing myself to the service of the organization," said Tenda, who had a standing ovation at the end of each song he performed.

Matibe said that he was happy

that many youths were beginning to realize that the furture lay with them. "We are very glad to have such a determined youth who are using their skills to the advantage of the community. We urge all our youth to follow Tenda's example and unleash their full potential," he said.

Five lose their lives in Thohoyandou accidents

Hardly a week after the horrifi c accident in Musina that killed seven passengers, Vhembe experienced another weekend marred by road deaths.

Two people died after the driver of a vehicle they were travelling in with others lost control and the vehicle capsized. The accident involved soccer players who were coming from a tournament at the Makwarela Stadium and happened next to the Tshikev-ha School at around 16:00 on Saturday.

In the second incident, three people, among them two drivers and a child, per-ished when the vehicles they were travelling in collided head-on. The incident happened along the Punda Maria Road next to Tshi-khudini at about 19:20 on Sunday.

In the first incident, a day of fun for 20 youth from Tshakhuma en-ded t ragical ly when the bakkie they were travel-ling in capsized at a sharp, steep bend, killing two young men and injuring many others in its wake. The bakkie was packed with soccer players. The players are said to have taken part in a soccer tour-nament at the Makwarela Stadium earlier.

The driver of the bakkie allegedly ran away after the accident. The road between Thohoyandou Stadium and Tshikevha School was closed for hours while scene experts, firefighters and traffic officials combed the scene for clues. Even though the scene was cordoned off, a large group of onlookers gathered and the police had to

battle to keep them at bay.The driver was later located by residents,

allegedly hiding at one of the local schools, and was handed over to the police.

A woman who did not wish to be named said their team, Tshakhuma RO, was knocked out earlier on in the day, but they decided to have fun watching other games. “It was around 16:00 when we decided to leave, but we could not locate the driver of the taxi that had ferried us to the stadium. That was when we saw this local guy and begged him for a lift. To tell you the truth, he refused, saying that we were too many as we were around 20. People forced them-selves into the bakkie and as it was about to move away, I received a call from my friend, who said I should wait for him. Hardly fi ve minutes after the bakkie had left, I heard the sad news that it had been involved in

an accident.”Thohoyandou

pol ice spokes-p e r s o n M a j o r Mashudu Malelo confirmed both incidents and said

they had opened culpable homicide dockets. He said they had opened a drunken-driv-

ing docket in respect of the driver who ran away from the accident scene. The man, Magau Donald Ntshavheni (27), appeared in court on Monday and the case was post-poned for a forensic investigation. He was released on a warning.

“We are appealing to all motorists to be extra cautious when using the road. We are losing many innocent lives and, in most instances, these accidents are a result of human error,” he said.

MTG Funerals to the rescue

The Thagwana family of Makonde, who lost two of its members last week when an enraged stepfather vented his anger on them and killed them with a knobk-ierie, received a helping hand when a well-known local funeral business offered them a free burial for the two.

MTG Funerals, one of the country’s leading funeral businesses, assisted the poor family. The two children, Thinawan-ga Munyai (5) and Justice Thagwana (3), were allegedly killed mercilessly by their stepfather, Prince Vele Budeli (45) after an argument with their mother, Ndidzu-lafhi Thagwan (44). The fi rst-born son, Given Thagwana (9), survived as he was visiting relatives.

The gruesome incident, which shocked the whole country, took place on Wednes-day morning. The suspect fl ed the scene, leaving behind the two dead little bodies wrapped in a blanket after the murder. He is still on the run and the community is living in fear that he might come back and cause more harm to the family.

Ms Khwathelani Rambuda, the local SANCO leader, said they were the fi rst to arrive at the scene of the killings. “The scene was shocking, with blood everywhere. What we saw will always linger in our minds. What worsened the situation is the abject poverty the family is experiencing. They were staying in a one-roomed house which served as a

kitchen and bedroom at the same time,” she said.

According to Ms Rambuda, the funeral cost would have been excessive for the family “and that is where we sprang into action and approached MTG Funerals, who did not think twice but made a com-mitment to bury them free of charge. We are very blessed to have a company which is close to the people, ready to help at all times,” she said. Rambuda urged the com-munity to support the company as it has the interests of the community at heart.

MTG’s Shudu Magwabeni said his company was entrenched in the commu-nity and had a social responsibility wing that catered for community development

and involvement.“We are involved in many community

initiatives. We are doing our bit in com-munity development and we have helped countless families who could not give their loved ones dignity during death. We have buried so many people free of charge as a way of ploughing back into the community.

They are the ones who make this busi-ness tick and we will continue being of assistance to them. This is our humble contribution to the community we come from,” he said.

Our main branch is located in Thohoy-andou, and we also have branches in Louis Trichardt, Polokwane and Johannesburg.

Serbia’s Vojvodina Province to assist Thulamela Municipality Members of a delegation from the Republic of Serbia’s Vojvodina Province visited several agricultural projects in Limpopo during the past week and, according to the MEC for Agricul-ture and Rural Development, Ms Joy Mashoge, the visit will promote friendship and active cooperation in the fields of agriculture, science, technology and rural development.

During a gala dinner for the Serbian delegation at the Khoroni hotel in Thohoyandou last Tuesday evening, Mashoge added that the visit would also lead to a change in technology and know-how in agricultural production between Limpopo and the Vojvodina Province.

“Our department of agriculture, in collabo-ration with the local municipalities, will select farming-project beneficiaries from cooperatives, small, medium and micro enterprises and share their best practices with the Serbian delegation,” added MEC Mashoge.

According to Mashoge, the Serbians’ tour include visits to the agricultural landscape in the Thulamela municipality, especially macadamia nuts farms.

Thulamela Mayor Grace Mahosi welcomed the delegations and said Thulamela was the economic hub of the Vhembe district, while the district was the food basket of the Limpopo province. “In Thulamela, agriculture is one of the key job drivers. Agriculture and rural development are our pillars. With agricultural development, we are

also helping in empowering our farmers, especially emerging ones.”

The Serbian provincial secretary of inter-region-al cooperation and local government, Mr Brainslav

Bugarski, said the Serbians were good producers of maize and sunflower, among others, and hoped their exchange with would have mutual benefit for both parties.

Quarrel over selling of “development land”A chief from Tshififi outside Thohoyandou said people were allegedly selling land earmarked for a new secondary school and irrigation scheme.

Chief Ranwedzi Tshikalange said communi-ties had applied to the Department of Education for the erection of a new secondary school to be built in Bunzhe, a sub-village of Tshififi, but that the sites were being sold to members of the community.

According to the application letter from the Tshikalange Traditional Authority, the estab-lishment of the new secondary school to be based at Bunzhe will ease the long travelling of pupils from about ten villages in Tshififi for attending school as far away as the seconday schools in Azwifarwi, Tshilala and Dzwaboni.

“We are amazed by such people who are selling sites and stands since 2010 and without the approval of the chief and the tribal author-ity. We have also applied for a water irrigation scheme, which will help local communities in agriculture and farming, but such development have stopped,” said Tshikalange.

He said he had tried to engage with the people who are illegally selling the sites for the benefit of themselves, “but I am surprised by people building their houses and they claim they have bought stands and they are entitled to build the houses. Neither I nor the tribal council gave permission for anyone to sell stands and sites,” added Chief Tshikalange.

The chairperson of the Tshififi Civic As-sociation, Pfarelo Luruli, said they were also amazed to see that people had started building their houses in a place set aside for the erection of the new school and irrigation scheme, which will aid the development of the communities.

One of the people accused of selling stands and sites earmarked for the erection of the new school and irrigation scheme, Mr Patrick Madzunye, strongly rejected the contention that he was selling stands and site illegally. “Yes, I am selling stands and sites because the royal council and the close family of Tshikalange have instructed me to do so. We don’t recognize Ranwedzi Tshikalange as our chief because he is accused of dividing communities and we are waiting for the final date to dethrone him as chief of Tshififi and other villages,” said Madzunye.

Madzunye added that the Tshififi and Bunzhe communities had never recognized the civic association, which is lead by Mr Pfarelo Luruli.

Mr Patrick Madzunye denies that he is selling the stands and sites illegally.

Reggae guru Callet “Burning Doctor’’ Lisoga recently released a new album, Thivhilaeli.

The album comprises nine melo-dious songs and, according to the artist, he is very happy about the latest release.

He added that the album was already doing well commercially.

His fi rst album, Athitanwi, hit the air waves in 2002. It proved all the critics wrong, as the fi rst print of the album was sold out within two weeks. It was followed by Nyimelo (2003). At least seven albums and a DVD followed after the fi rst two albums and Lisoga enjoys a large fan base.

He was born at Ha-Tshino and started singing as a little boy in the Tshino Sweet melody choir. He later became the lead vocalist in the

Tshino Pentecostal Church.“Even though I am presently using

my old studio, I try to work with different producers to avoid creating the sounds and same level of quality which the other in-house artists seem to achieve,” says Lisoga.

Some of the stand-out songs on this album include Tshifhinga, Crazy World, Thanga Phanda and Loswo is coming. On this album, he is using a new style in terms of sound and rhythm.

Lisoga sounds gloomy and sad as he speaks about the “malignant poi-son of piracy. I sell my music at taxi ranks in the town around Vhembe,” he says. “While I occupy this corner here, those who pirate our work will occupy the area over there, selling my music at a mere R10 per MP3 collection.”

A Mashamba-based mathematician and school teacher, Tumelo Errol Mudau, launched his poetry collection, titled Voices in the Wilderness, on Satur-day at Mashamba Presidential School.

Voices in the Wilderness is a package of 35 well-crafted poems.

“It will uplift people and take them from the ground level to the upper level,” he said. “It speaks about the state of the nation, about Africa and also sheds light on more social ills affecting all of us.”

The book was published by an emerg-ing publisher, Shukran Printers, which recognises raw, new voices in literary circles. Mudau’s book launch was also attended by his proud publisher, Dr

primary schools, to read on a daily basis, the love for books is still very low in black communities,” he said. “It is for us to write and publish more books, and make those books available to the people out there.”

A senior member of Mashamba Royal Council, Vho-SE Mashamba, concurred with Dr Phaswana and said that rural communities still had a long way to go in educating the youth in terms of values, ethics and norms embedded in books like Voices in the Wilderness.

The author’s wife, Mrs Gloria Mudau, was over the moon when she lit a candle during the launch. She was full of praises for her loving, caring, understanding and

humble husband.“I feel blessed to have a husband who

is a true leader, one who loves his family and education,” she said. “All those posi-tive values of love and respect helped the project to be brought to fruition. I would also like to thank Mrs Angie’tjie Phaswa-na and Dr Phaswana for the support they gave our family.”

The author attended his primary school at Mashamba and later matriculated at Raluombe Secondary School. In 1986, he completed his Senior Primary Teachers Diploma at Modjadji College of Educa-tion, near Tzaneen. He later completed his BA and B.Ed degrees at the University of the North (now Limpopo).

Family members surround the tombstone of the respected gogo, Munzhedzi Nyambeni.

By Kaizer Nengovhela

Gogo Nyambeni laid to restHundreds of people gathered at Ngwenani village on Saturday to pay their last respects to gogo Munzhedzi Nyambeni (81), who was buried at the Ngwenani grave-yard. She recently died after a long illness.

During the ceremony, she was described as a pioneer, a born leader and a woman of vision. According to Ms Azwindini Mabilu, she was a good gogo who helped everyone, despite her circumstances. "We are saddened by her death, but we will have to accept it, because God’s will has been done.”

Her son, Mr Tshifaro Nyambeni, said that his mother was a very solemn, restrained and dignified woman.

“For so many years, she served selflessly and faithfully in parishes throughout the country, and in those dark days she made herself available day and night to all who needed her,” he added.

Thovhele Vho-Ratshinyiwaho Themeli described her as a pioneer, a born leader and a woman of vi-sion. He said the whole community gathered with heavy hearts, because she had been influential in the area.

“Hand case not a typical ritual murder case”Louis Trichardt’s infamous “Hand Case” drew to a close on 2 July with the sentencing of Freddy Azwitamisi Tshikhudo (40) to life imprisonment, as reported upon in last week’s Limpopo Mirror.

The newspaper is currently hosting a guest from the Netherlands, Mr Wiebe de Jong, who is conducting his doctoral re-search into the symbolism of muti murders here in the Vhembe District. Regarding the Tshikhudo case, De Jong shared his insights into the case, which has been widely regarded as a muti murder.

Over the last two years, the Limpopo Mirror ran several articles about the ritual murder conducted by Freddy Tshikhudo. In 2013, he was seized in an Indian shop while waving around a human arm. After being arrested, he led the police to some nearby bushes and showed them the corpse to whom the arm belonged.

“Up to now, the authorities maintain that Tshikhudo committed a ritual murder because the victim missed some body parts (though one could not say whether these had been cut off or taken away by animals; except for the arm). It does not, however, display the features of a typical ritual murder,” said De Jong.

First of all, he explained, Tshikhudo acted on his own, while ritual murders are usually planned way ahead by a group of people. “The archives of the Thohoyandou High Court contain quite a lot of court cases in which a group of usually three to four men ambush a chosen person and strip the victim of particular body parts. Usually, one of the group is the instiga-tor, who wants to improve his position with medicine made of human material, and he carefully selects people around him to seize the victim,” he said, adding that Tshikhudo never sought the help of

others, let alone a traditional healer to produce muti.

Secondly, De Jong said, ritual murder cases are characterized by the fact that body parts are cut off while the victim is still alive. “Some anthropologists have also noted that the screams of the victim would supposedly alert the ancestors, while others argue that a ‘fresh’ body part contains more medicinal power,” said De Jong. In Tshikhudo’s case, however, he testified that he had cut off his victim’s arm more than a week after she had passed away. “That is rather late for it to be clas-sified as a ritual murder,” said De Jong.

De Jong said that to find a more accept-able motive for the murder, one should rather try to shed light on the relationship between Tshikhudo and his victim. Ac-cording to Tshikhudo’s testimony, they had had a secret relationship, which the deceased wanted to end. “Moreover, she allegedly unmasked Tshikhudo’s adul-terous relationship when she phoned his wife. As such, it might be possible that the motive was not a ritual murder, but one of revenge. Anthropologists have shown that the dishonour felt by an abandoned lover can be so fierce that the only way to ‘remove and cleanse its stains is by shedding blood’. By cutting off par-ticular body parts such as the victim’s private parts, as Tshikhudo had allegedly done, ultimate vindication is found, through a literal am-putation of one’s honour and dignity,” said De Jong

When studying the prac-tice of ritual murders, De Jong said, attention should

not only be paid to the fact that body parts are missing. “Rather, we should look for connections between the ones involved and the context in which it happened. If you perceive it from that perspective, Tshikhudo’s murder looks more like a crime of passion,” said De Jong.

The question remains why Tshikhudo decided to cut off the victim’s arm after her death. “A simple answer could be that Tshikhudo is aware of the illicit trade in body parts and thought that he was able to sell it for a good price. But that did not seem to be the initial motive as it was done a week after, but rather a choice to make quick money. A wrong decision,

as it proved to be, be-cause that started the court case for which he has now been sentenced to life imprisonment,”

said De Jong.

For more than 10 years, a Thohoyandou family has had to endure the stinking smell caused by the persistent sewage spillage that leaves a river of faeces flowing into their own yard.

The Mukwevho family, who resides in Thohoyandou P East along the Thohoyandou main street, said they had complained of the same thing time and again at the local municipality for the past 10 years, but with no help forthcoming.

When this paper arrived at the house, we were greeted by a river of sewage that flowed straight to the kitchen and the outside sink. The stream flows around the house to the road outside the yard. To en-ter the house, one needs to wear water boots as it is watery all over.

“It has been like this for the past 10 years. We tried to engage the municipality and they would come and fix it and go, but the follow-ing day it would be the same thing again,” said Ms Takalani Mukwevho (38).

Mukwevho, who also owns Main Street Car Wash, said the engi-neers from the munici-pality told them that the pipes were old and too small, so that they could not carry the heavy load of the growing town. She said that she told them to remove the pipes to give them peace of mind, but they told her that this could not be done. “We are really

suffering. Both my parents are aged and the bad smell is affect-ing their health in a negative way. We cannot even cook food in the kitchen as it is also smelling and my car wash business is adverse-ly affected."

She mentioned that some of their clients had gone to other businesses because of the smell. "These people do not care about our lives and we do not know where to run to for assistance,” she said.

The ageing Vhakwevhos, Dan-iel Tsaitsai and Alinah, said all they wanted was compensation

from the municipality. “We have endured a lot of pain through the years, because of the incompe-tence of municipal officials. We need to be reimbursed for the suf-fering. We have spent thousands on doctors and our health has been compromised,” said Daniel.

Vhembe District municipality spokesperson Matodzi Ralushai said they had dispatched techni-cians to the house and that they would get to the bottom of the problem. “Our personnel are on site and we hope the problem will be dealt with once and for all,” he said.

Accountants to brush up their knowledge

Water and sanitation under scrutinyA summit highlighting the theme Water is life, sanitation is dignity took place at the Karibu Leisure Resort in the Greater Tzaneen Municipality area last Thursday.

Stakeholders from the min-ing sector, the farming frater-nity, academics, water-user associations, traditional leaders, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations as

well as the private sector delib-erated on solutions to water and sanitation issues.

Premier Stanley Mathabatha opened the summit and added that the summit had brought together various role players in the water and sanitation sector to identify challenges of water and sanitation in Limpopo.

He mentioned that the event was the culmination of district

water summits, which focused on mining and agriculture in the context of water needs and usage.

The Minister for Water and Sanitation, Ms Nomvula Mokonyane, said that it was time “to go back to basics, given the fact that we are dealing with a scarce commodity and also with climate change adding to the challenge of getting rain water.”

Parents remove pupils from schools

The cha irperson o f t h e S G B , M r Tshamano Raselabe.

When the parents realised that their pleas for a new building were not being answered, they decided to close down the Bale Primary school in June and only allowed the pupils to write their mid-year examinations.

The doors of learning have now been shut down for three weeks. Members of the school

governing body (SGB) and officials of the De-partment of Education met earlier and, accord-ing to the parents, they never received the mo-bile classes promised in May. The decision to close down the school was taken by the parents and the community be-cause they feared for the safety of their children.

The school’s eight classrooms, which were built in 1978 by the

community, are now dilapidated. The parents fear that the building could collapse

and injure or kill their children. The walls are cracked, the floor is riddled with potholes and the roof leaks.

Teachers and learners have reportedly sustained injuries as a result of the holes in the floor. The pupils also said that the school's roof was on the verge of collapsing.

The chairperson of the SGB, Mr Tshamano Raselabe, said that bushes on the school premis-es also posed a serious danger to the pupils and teachers as snakes had been seen.

“This school is a ticking time bomb, waiting to explode at anytime,” Raselabe said. He said parents had been pleading with the Department of Education to provide them with new classrooms since 1993.

He added that they had alerted the Limpopo Department of Education on numerous occasions in an attempt to fix the school, but to no avail.

He said the conditions at the school made it very difficult for education to proceed smooth-

ly. Raselabe said they always found snakes and scorpions seeking refuge in the dilapidat-ed classes.

The communication manager of the Limpo-po Department of Ed-ucation, Mr Naledzani Rasila, said that the de-partment was facing a backlog in terms of re-pairing infrastructure. “It is a well-known fact that our budget has been reduced. This school, however, is one of many schools that will be fixed this year,” promised Rasila.

Mbabalelo Nematondoni (30), a former Makhado and Univen FM presenter, is now the darling of the airwaves at the SABC’s radio station, Phalaphala FM.

Listeners of Phalaphala FM have somebody to be proud of, as this girl from the dusty streets of Tshilamba settlement is making her mark in the national broad-casting industry.

Nematondoni’s road to stardom was not as smooth as her listeners might think. She matriculated from Lucas Ratshalingwa High School in 2006 and the following year she proceeded to Central College to study for a diplo-ma in media studies.

“I fell in love with radio at a very young age, and I believe I have made the right career choice. I used to mime radio programmes on my own at home. I could not resist the opportunity to join Phalaph-ala FM because I have want-ed to expose my talent to the public for a long time. I took the bull by its horns because I am not afraid to face new challenges in life. I make sure that the listeners are also part of the show. I also accept constructive criticism and this makes me more popular with my listeners,” she says.

Nematondoni currently presents Zwamasheleni na vhubinduzi (commerce and fi nance) on Wednesday from 14:30 to 15:00 and Masofani on Sunday night at 21:00 to midnight. Barely two years after joining the station, Nematondoni’s popularity has grown tremendously because of her emphasis on promoting her mother tongue (Tshivenda) without compromise.

“My programme is more informative than entertaining and I make sure that the lan-guage I use is understand-able to everyone. When it comes to radio, one has to be very careful with lan-guage because it is the only way of communication with the listeners.”

Asked about the recipe for her success, Nematondoni was quick to say:

“Perseverance, hard work, motivation and effective time management are the only secrets for success. I have always believed that, no matter how many shots I have missed, I’m going to make the next one. I want to tell the youth that it is important to put education fi rst, so that they can make a signifi cant contribution in the community in which they live. Youths must stay away from drugs and criminal activities and prepare themselves for careers that will benefi t them in life.”

The expression that it takes a whole village to raise a child came to life when the commu-nity structure staged a career guidance and prize-giving event for pupils at Mandiwana village in the Nzhelele area.

Cash prizes were presented to 10 pupils who performed well last year. The pupils came from different schools within and outside the village as they only had to be residents of Mandiwana to be eligible for awards.

All community stakeholders were invited to the event, and speakers and career guides included offi-cials from the University of Venda, Vhembe TVET College, and Tshwane University of Technology. Pupils were inspired to read and study harder and aim for greater achievements and a brighter future.

Vhembe TVET College’s Bonginkosi Dladlama told the pupils about the vocational opportunities available for them at technical and vocational ed-ucation and training institutions. He told pupils not to despair, because South Africa provided a wide range of vocational possibilities and opportunities for the youth.

The convocation and alumni officer in the department of communication and marketing at Univen, Mashudu Ramaleba, advised pupils about making career choices and informed them about the university entry requirements.

The guest speaker, Dr Ndwamato Tshamano (Tshwane University of Technology), told pupils to start preparing for a successful future. “What

you become in life does not depend on what your parents have,” he said. “You can become a scientist, engi-neer, medical doctor – despite your parents’ unfavourable situation.”

He told them that bursaries were aplenty to them; all they needed to do was to show determination. He added that each pupil must have a vision as it would provide them with focus.

The chairperson for the Mandiwana community structures, Mr Samuel Raselabe, said that the purpose of the event was to encourage and mo-tivate pupils, so that the community

could pride themselves on their own children.

“The success of these children is also our responsibility,” he said. “As parents, we will always involve ourselves in our children’s lives and education to make sure that they have a brighter future. We need to see more doctors, scientists, writers, accountants and so on, coming out of our village.”

A Grade 12 pupil, Calvin Mandi-wana (17), said he felt really encour-aged by the words from the different speakers.

Pupils and stakeholders were photographed during the event. Fourth from left is Vhembe TVET College’s Bonginkosi Dladlama.

In the photograph are (from left to right) Samuel Raselabe, Khuthadzo Musweswe, Mashudu Ramaleba, Rinae Rathogwa and Joshua Masakona.

Choral groups bring harmonious melodies to the local peopleChoral groups in Vhembe District have formed a friendship which lets them meet regularly and sing all day long at a designated venue. They have decided to take choral music out to the people.

The groups also aim to remove children from the harsh streets where they are exposed to alcohol abuse and criminal activities by engaging them in singing. The events also aim to lure possible sponsorship from the local businesspeople, so that the groups can

receive fi nancial assistance to cover travel and recording fares.

“We believe that if we stick togeth-er and demonstrate our love of music, people will hear us and listen to our pleas for help,” said the co-ordinator, Muhali Magwala.

A veteran choral master and com-poser, Magwala indicated that he had decided to host weekly friendly choral events, where two or more choirs got together and sang for the whole day - mostly on Saturdays or any designat-

Fruit of dedicationed day during school recess. Magwala is the man who discovered the Satma winner Jininka wayback in the 1990s, when she was still a young girl.

“We also aim to get help from government departments, community members, and businesspeople,” he said. “We still lack proper uniforms and transport fares as most members are unemployed people and school pupils.”

Last Saturday, The Mighty Ser-vants Choir from Ha-Mutsha village

and Muhali and the African Gospel Choir from Madabani village con-vened at Madabani Primary School.

The Mighty Servants Choir’s di-rector, Rofhiwa Muneri, said that the group had enjoyed the event, where the two choirs had praised God in song. “Getting together under one roof is what matters a lot to us,” he said. “We come from many different churches and denominations – so we teach one another that God is one. There are people who still dis-

criminate against one another, based on the denomination or church which one attends.”

T h e e s t a b l i s h e d singer and evangelist Sammy Mutibi recent-ly joined the Muhali and the African Gospel Choir as a lead vocalist and has become part of the movement which is taking choral music to the people.

“Many people tend to look down on choirs from the rural areas,” he said. “No, it needs not be that way – most of us, as you see us as celebrated singers, we started out from those choirs who sing under the trees or in class-rooms.”

The two choirs are available for singing at events and functions, such as wedding cere-monies, birthday parties and funerals. Muneri (The Mighty Servants Choirs) can be reached at 084 471 3440, and Magwala at 076 765 8750.

The joy of a Limpopo father who, in 2010, wished his daughter would fail her Grade 12 examinations because he did not have money to send her to university cannot be described.

Mr Reuben Dzivhani became one of the happiest fathers when his daughter, Arinao, received her degree in geology. Dzivhani (51) of Thohoyandou, general manager at the Thu-lamela Municipality, was close to tears when he addressed guests and graduates during his daughter’s graduation party.

Arinao (22) recently completed her BSc in geology at the University of Fort Hare.

Speaking during the occasion held at Mule-dane, Dzivhani said he had then wished that his daughter would fail because he did not have money to send her to university. “At the time I had only R5 000 and at least R50 000 was needed for her tuition. I was also building a family house, which needed a lot of money, and I had to put the project on hold,” he said.

Dzivhani said God made everything possible. “We were very happy when she passed all her fi rst-year courses with fl ying colours but were shocked to fi nd out that she became pregnant in her second year. We decided to give her the nec-essary support, even though she fell pregnant, and we are today excited that she fi nally got her degree and she made us very proud,” he said.

Arinao said she had God, her parents and all who supported her to thank for her achieve-ments.

“I remember when I fell pregnant and thought that my world had come to an end. My parents supported me and my friends at varsity support-ed me throughout my pregnancy and I achieved my dreams,” she said.

Proud family members wait patiently as Arinao feeds them pieces of her graduation cake during the function.

Jeffrey Ramatsitsi of Tshiozwi and Hlamarisa tied the knot during a traditional wedding held at his home on Saturday.

Masana Social Skills and Development in Louis Trichardt donated building material to the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) congregation at Tshikota last Thursday. Photographed during the event are, from left to right, Messrs Fhatuwani Mudau (church member), Mashudu Ravele (Masana) and Prince Mudimeli, a member of the church.

Rev Patrick Nyambi (third from right) says the EPC's 140th anniversary went well.

EPC celebrates 140 years of excellence and goodwillA large number of members of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in South Africa (EPC) celebrated the church's 140 anniversary at Valdezia last week.

The theme of the celebrations was Remembering the rock from which we were cut.

The EPC's moderator, Rev Patrick Nyambi, said that the church had a

history of excel-lence, goodness, goodwill and good leadership, which spanned more than a century. “It's the reason why we have chosen Isaiah 51:1 as our stand-point on this 140th anniversary,” he said.

“We have got people from at least six provinc-es – and all the

people enjoyed the celebration which was like a pilgrimage to many who spent five full days staying in homes or local lodges in and around Valdezia.” Different speak-ers encouraged members of the church to continue to walk and follow the path which believers who came before them had walked faithfully.

According to Nyambi, the celebra-tions were aimed at commemorating the achievements and milestones of the church since its establishment in 1875. The celebrations were also attended by dignitaries from both the business and private sector and people from the enter-tainment industry attended and entertained the guests. The Valdezia Mission Station, which houses the EPC, was established by Swiss theological students of missionar-ies, Henri Bertroud and Ernst Creux.

“The two had obtained permission to purchase the farm Klipfontein from a Scotsman, Mr J Watt, in 1874, on which they established the station,” said media liaison of-ficer Ms Rirhandzu Nkombyani.

“Mr Alexis Thomas, an artisan and mission-ary, was responsible for the buildings, gardens and day-to-day func-tions of the mission.” Nkombyani stated that the Swiss Mission com-plex consisted of Elim Hospital, Old Valde-zia School, Lemana College, Elim Mission Church, Elim Mill and a dam, as well other historical buildings.

People attended the EPC's 140th anniversary in large numbers.

New youth leaders for Lutheran ChurchThe Evangelical Lutheran Church in Southern Africa in-stalled four dynamic members into the church’s Young Adults League at Tshiozwi village a week ago.

This yearly function was also attended by the Very Reverend Dean Alunamutwe Randitsheni as well as the executive secretary of the Northern Diocese, Rev Nditsheni Khodoga.

The four leaders, Mesdames Pophi Murulana, Thonga Lu-dere, Selaelo Mmbadaliga and

Fulufhelo Phadziri, are expected to accept responsibility for adult leadership and service in the Lutheran Church, especially in Vhuilafuri Parish where they are all based.

According to a spokesperson for the church, the four leaders are also to participate creatively in the various worship services provided for in the church. Rev (Dr) Ntavhanyeni Phaswana, who installed them, indicated to the four ladies that they are to realize the worth of every

individual in the church and local communities despite their gender, race and abilities. He added that it was refreshing to note that in a country where many were victims of moral decay, in 2014 the Lutheran Church in the Vhuilafuri Parish had installed 23 young adults.

“You are not ordinary people. Some of you are aspiring entre-preneurs whereas others are do-ing excellent work in our health system. Go out there and make a difference,” Phaswana said.

The four new youth leaders, Mesdames Phophi Murulana, Thonga Ludere, Selaelo Mmbadaliga and Fulufhelo Phadziri.

A new church, The Bible Power Life Church, was officially launched on Saturday. The church is in Thohoyandou and was established under the leadership of Pastor Amos Siaga. A large number of people from all corners of Vhembe and even from Gauteng attended the event. Mr Caledon Netshikweta (left), Pastor Amos Siaga, Ms Sylvia Siaga and Dr Happy Ramakhanya (right) were photographed shortly after the launch. Photo: Silas Nduvheni.

Notice

“Apply for funding”The National Lot-teries Commission (NLC) is calling on non-profit organisa-tions, non-government organisations, pub-lic-benefit trusts and communities to apply for funding.

According to the NLC press release issued on Tuesday, the Charities Distributing Agency will also make provision for educational facilities designed to enhance literacy through early childhood education, adult literacy, vocation-al training and mento-ring for skills devel-opment that includes disabled persons. This is the second of three annual calls that will be made to the public to apply for funding in the current financial year.

According to NLC commissioner Charlotte Mampane, the NLC has set aside funds in line with stated sector allo-cations as prescribed by the National Lotteries Act. While the NLC will in future implement proactive funding to qualifying beneficiaries, Mampane says the NLC will continue to disburse funds primarily through open calls to the public, such as this one. “We are anticipating a pos-itive response and we therefore urge organi-sations to submit their applications as early as possible,” said Mam-pane.

Mampane added, however, that they would like to stress that beneficiaries must still comply with set criteria in order to be considered for funding.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to reiterate the fact that our recent change of sta-tus from National Lot-teries Board to National Lotteries Commission will have no impact on our mandate to uplift communities through our grant-funding pro-cess. The application and adjudication pro-cess will also continue as before,” Mampane said.

Applications offi-cially commenced on 12 July for registered medium-sized organisa-tions wishing to secure funding in excess of R500 000, while ap-plications for smaller organisations will open on 1 October 2015. Closing dates for the current call for funding are 3 September and 12 November this year respectively.

Sweepers are the new Bilisi champions Last Sunday was a memorable day for Maramanzhi Sweep-ers Football Club. They were crowned the champions of the annual Bilisi Soccer Festival at the Tshenzhelani grounds.

Sweepers beat Masisi FC 3-1 in the final. Their first goal was scored by Sipho Shikololo, who converted a penalty towards the end of the first half. The other two goals came via Gudani Mp-haphuli and Louis Phetheli later in the game.

Masisi did not throw in the towel, despite the fact that time was fast running out for them. Their consolation goal was

scored by Baldwin Matshete, whose performance was out-standing throughout the game. Sweepers received prize money of R3 200 during a ceremony shortly after the final whistle.

As he runners-up, Masisi FC pocketed R2 300 while teams that were booted out of the com-petition in the semifinal stage, Tshenzhelani FC and Tuwani FC, received R1 000 each.

Masisi beat Tshenzhelani in the semi-final, while Sweepers’ way to the final went via Tuwani FC, whom they crushed 4-0.

Baldwin Machete of Masisi FC received the oldest player

award. Machete and his son are regular players for Masisi FC. Maramanzhi Sweepers are lifting the trophy for the second time. They were crowned the cham-pions in the inaugural event in 2011. Masisi were crowned the champions in 2013.

Sipho Shikololo, the Sweep-ers’ fast forward, received the top goal scorer award. He scored three goals in the tournament. Hulisani Madide of Sweep-ers and Thanyani Phosiwa of Tshenzhelani received special awards for having played every year since the inception of the tournament.

This year, Reach for a Dream will be activating the annual Slipper Day campaign on Friday, 7 August. All South Africans can take part in the campaign by reaching for their slippers and wearing them to work, school, or wherever they like - all in aid of helping children who are fighting life-threatening illnesses. People are requested to buy a R10 sticker from a Wimpy and proudly wear their slippers on Slipper Day. If you wear the sticker and slippers to Wimpy on 7 August, it will guarantee a free cup of Wimpy’s regular coffee. “Last year stickers sold through Wimpy outlets resulted in just over R1.1 million in funds for Reach for a Dream and this year we would like to sell even more to further aid this non-profit organisation,” says Karabo Morudu, Wimpy’s brand manager. Astonomy club to meet

Two victories for Tshakhuma RO United

The Soutpansberg Astronomy Club has invited all local stargazers for an evening under the stars on Saturday, 18 July, any time after sunset.

Up for grabs in the early part of the evening will be the crescent moon, with Jupiter, Venus and Regulus nearby. The evening promises a gorgeous photo opportunity. “Saturn, always a fantastic sight with any size telescope, will be visible, as well as numerous deep-sky objects in Scorpius and Sagit-tarius,” says the club.

For more information contact Kos Coronaios at 079 148 4934 or via email at [email protected]

Tshakhuma RO United started their MMK Administrators League promotional play-off journey on a bad note, following their 1-2 defeat at the hands of United Artists at the Makwarela Stadium on Saturday.

They rectifi ed their mistakes, however, and won their remaining two matches at the same venue the following day. They fi rst beat Muswodi Happy Fighters 2-0 and later overpowered Mukula Young Santos 3-1.

Their game against United Artists was a see-saw battle. RO United did not lose their fi ghting spirit, despite the fact that two of their key players, Takalani Ratshilivha and Thulani Mashia, were cautioned with yellow cards in the opening min-utes of the game. Ratshilima was reprimanded for obstruction while Mashia’s infringement was a tackle from behind on Mashudu Siobo.

Both sides used all their substitution chances in the last half. RO United introduced Mulisa Luvhen-go, Londani Davhula and Rendani Mukomafhedzi for Ntanganedzeni Mudau, Lavhelesani Mukomaf-hedzi and Victor Makhaukhau respectively. The replacements were not good enough to stop Artists from opening their account in the 60th minute. Their left-footed striker, Vutomi Ngomana, headed home after a scramble within the box.

Artists did not have enough time to celebrate their goal. RO United fought back four minutes later. Ndivhuwo “Rooney” Makhado was on tar-get with a header, following a square pass from Takalani Ratshilivha. Lutendo Matodzi of Artists was booked for pulling off his jersey inside the fi eld of play.

United Artist later replaced Mashudu Siobo and Maanda Mulaudzi with Ndaedzo Mutavhatsindi and Vuwani Masakona respectively. Masakona formed a deadly combination with Vutomi Ngo-mana at the forefront. Artists scored the winner in the 84th minute via Vuwani Masakona. Masakona was later booked for faking an injury

Defenders beat Wayeni in play-offs

The Safa Vhembe MMK Ad-mistrators play-off match be-tween Wayeni Sea Robbers and Rabali Pull Together at Tshifulanani Stadium on Sun-day ended in a one-all draw.

The match was characterised by wasted chances on the part of the Robbers’ strikers. Kulani Baloyi missed a shot from the edge of the box after a good pass from Walter Munyanyi.

Baloyi dribbled past a number of defenders, but hesitated too long to release and he was dis-possessed.

Although fans started to shout at the Rabali technical staff to

replace Pfano Radzilani, their pleas fell on deaf ears. The tech-nical team, however, brought on Ndivhuwo Masakona and Ndamulelo Mbezi in the place of Rendani Mukhese and Rabelani Muofhe respectively. Robbers could have scored more than a dozen goals, had they managed to convert all their chances. They were, however, denied sure goals by experienced former Dynamos and Black Leopards goalkeeper Amoni Phophi.

Pul l Together’s s t r iker , Vuledzani Mahosi, missed a clear chance in the 40th minute. His team mate, Rudzani Ralushai,

committed a similar blunder two minutes later.

The half-time score was still nil-nil.

Robbers started the second half as if they were going to bury their opponents alive. Their breakthrough came in the 69th minute when Collen Sambo caught Phophi off guard and beat him with a volley.

The equalizing goal came in the 82nd minute. Ndamulelo Mbezi scored from a free kick after he had been brought down. Late in the match, Advocate Mokoena of Robbers was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Mpheni Home Defenders were too good for Wayeni Sea Robbers and beat them 2-0 during the MMK Admistrators play-off match played at Tshifulanani Stadi-um on Saturday.

The victory did not reflect the game in general as Defenders outsmarted their op-ponents from the onset. The boys from Wayeni were lucky not to con-cede half a dozen goals during the first half, as they were out of touch in all departments.

Defenders missed two clear chances in the first 10 minutes. Dakalo Nwanamidwa shot wide from close range after receiving a neat pass from Giv-en Ndou in the fourth minute. As if that was not enough to heat up the fans, Ndou caused another upset three minutes later. He re-leased aimlessly from outside the box, much to the disappointment of the team’s sup-porters. The half-time score was 0-0.

Defenders finally broke the deadlock in the 68th minute. The long-range ground cut-ter of their left flank, Ndaedzo Mareda, left the Wayeni keeper, Engedzani Sambo, flat-footed. Both sides effected two changes in the last half. Defend-ers capitalised on a lapse in concentration and scored their sec-ond goal five minutes

Moses Lisoga of Defenders (front) leaves his opponent, Tivani Mushombani, behind.

Given Ndou of Defenders clears the ball from Advocate Mokoena.

before the full-time whistle via Melvin Mabatha. Secret Mathebula and Forget Baloyi of Wayeni missed sitters in the dying minutes.

Phathutshedzo Takalani of Santos leaves the pitch after seeing red.

Mukula Young Santos started their MMK Administrators League promotional play-off matches with a bang, but the wheel of fortune turned against them in their last two matches.

They beat Muswodi Happy Fighters 2-0 in their opening match at the Makwarela Stadium on Satur-day, but shared the spoils with United Artists, when they played to a goalless draw at the same venue the following day. Their third match was against Tshakhuma RO United, to whom they lost 1-3 on Sunday afternoon.

As if they were going to bury Santos alive, Happy Fighters started the game like a house on fire but their original stamina vanished with time. Fighters threatened to score in the eighth minute. Their slender striker, Gudani Ramuthelo, was unlucky when his volley hit the woodwork and bounced out of the field of play.

Rinae Ndwammbi of Happy Fighters was the first player to go into the referee’s book. He obstructed Vuwani Nendauni just outside the box in the 18th minute. Young Santos gained momentum with time and scored their first goal via Candy Khaukanani in the 24th minute. Khaukanani broke loose from the right corner and beat the keeper with a ground cutter.

Santos were forced to effect an early change to their starting line-up. They introduced Freedom

Makhuvha for Jacob Ramudzuli, who was taken to hospital with a dislocated elbow joint. Tshimangadzo Managa of Santos was booked, following a continued argument with the referee two minutes before the half-time whistle.

Happy Fighters in t roduced Mavhuthu Makana and Zachariah Ndou for Rinae Ndwammbi and Lu-

tendo Mukondeleni early in the last half. Santos were reduced to 10 men in the 74th minute. Phathutshedzo Takalani handled the ball intention-ally and the referee did not hesitate to send him off. Joshua Netshilindi scored the second for Santos with a header after a corner kick that was taken by Tshimangadzo Managa in the referee’s optional time.

Tshivhilidulu Hungry Lions 2-1 in the losers’ final match at the same venue before the final.

Pfarelo Nemaranzhe of Ma-ranzhe Hungry Lions and Da-kalo Nemakonde of Sunrise Riders, with three goals apiece, shared the top goal scorer award. The player of the tournament award went to Zwidofhelangani Nevhulaudzi of Hungry Lions. Lugisani Ndou of Lions was the best keeper of the tournament.

Two local professional soccer players, Rendani Ndou and Thivhavhudzi Ndou, spon-sored the tournament. Ndou is a regular striker for Polokwane City while his younger brother, Thivhavhudzi, is a reliable Black Leopards centre back. Fifteen teams took part in the tournament.

Lions win Madzuhe ChallengeMaranzhe Hungry Lions lifted the Petrus Madzuhe Soccer Challenge Cup, after beating Phandulaluvalo FC 3-1 in the fi nal at the Ma-ranzhe grounds on Sunday.

The game had all the ingredients of a cup-fi nal fi xture as both sides fi red on all cylinders from the fi rst whistle. The referee, Mr Eric Munyai, had a long afternoon as the teams gave each other no time to breathe. The keeper of Hungry Lions, Lugisani Ndou, denied Phandulaluvalo two sure goals in the 14th and 20th minutes. Firstly, Ndou advanced out of the penalty area to block Pfarelo Nemaranzhe’s shot. Ndou was in the thick of things shortly afterwards. This time around he stretched to the limit to palm Ipfi Radzilani’s volley away for a corner kick.

Ndifelani Nevhulaudzi of Hungry Lions was

reprimanded with a card for a late tackle on Pha-thutshedzo Masindi in the 29th minute.

Phandulaluvalo approached the last half with their tails up but the Lions’ keeper stopped on their way to victory.

The game came to a halt for about 15 minutes while allowing the Lions’ keeper, Lugisani Ndou, to change his soccer boots. This after the referee had indicated that the boots were dangerous to the other players. Ndou was reluctant to change the boots, saying he used the same boots in all their pre-vious games and the referees had remained silent.

It was after a heated argument between Ndou and the match officials that the keeper finally succumbed.

The winner was determined through penalty shootout as both sides failed to fi nd the net during regulation time. Hungry Lions scored through Lufuno Ndou, Ndifelani Nevhulaudzi and Thifhu-
