The Flower PressIt was the sort of thing given to little girls:sturdy and small, round edged, wooden and light.I stalked the pasture’s rough and waist-high grassfor worthy specimens: the belle amid the mass,the star shaming the clouds of slighter,ordinary blooms. The asters curled

inside my sweat-damp palms, as if in sleep. Crushedin the parlor’s stifl ing heat, I priedeach shrinking petal back, and turned the screws.But fl owers bear no ugly bruise,and even now fall from the brittle page, driedprettily, plucked from memory’s hush.

Gunpowder Press was founded in 2014 by David Starkey, a Santa Barbara poet laureate, with the intention of publishing the fi rst books of two poets: Chryss Yost and David Case. Chryss Yost, also a Poet Laureate of Santa Barbara, has been writing for decades, and her collection Mouth & Fruit showcases the best of that fi nely crafted, wide-

ranging work. David Case, who died unexpectedly in 2011 at the age of 49, was an equally gifted poet. Wry, erudite, haunted, he produced a body of work that deserves the broadest possible readership. Gunpowder Press is intent on remaining small but vibrant, fully committed to each book it publishes. The Press acknowledges its city’s namesake, Barbara of Nicomedia, the patron saint of gunpowder.
