Wow! The response to Petwoo’s announce-ment that we are moving forward with plans to convert Petwoo’s online social net-

work into a full fledged personal match making service for pet lovers has had Petpalooza’s phones “ringing off their hooks”... hmm, that saying is probably outdated. Yes kids, before iPhones (and Android mobile devices) took over the world, clunky receivers hung on cradles waiting to be answered. Now, it’s a simple swipe to answer all the incoming calls anxiously requesting more information on what exactly is Petwoo and how much does it cost to join.

While still serving as Petpalooza’s C.E.D. Chief Execu-tive Dog, I’m also privileged to be a part of Petwoo’s new and exciting pet friendly organization. The con-cept behind Petwoo is simple. After seeing the love that pet owners.. excuse me—pet parents have for their furry kids it only makes sense to have a network for these wonderful, often busy individuals to meet up and connect.

Petwoo was first envisioned as bringing singles together that were looking for dating, romance and more, but as time passed, we took more and more calls, from both men and women, that were simply desiring to find wel-coming venues and events to meet, drink, dine and so-

cialize—with and without their pets.

This vital input gathered from current online members, and potential new members led us to reenvision our ini-tial goals but not to discard them—but to add to them!

Petwoo has added a basic membership that’s only $10 a month for 12 months (or you can SAVE 15% by mak-ing a one time payment of just $99 for the year.) The membership may be called “Basic” but there’s nothing commonplace about the perks of being a Petwoo Mem-ber. You will receive monthly invitations to a variety of fun and entertaining mixers and pet friendly meet-ups. You’ll even have opportunities to try out a wide range of pet workshops, classes, and trainings; all for no cost, or a Petwoo discounted fee.

Members also receive monthly VIP Perk Packages via email that will save them money on not just pet products and services, but also things they’ll enjoy, like dining out, entertainment, and so much more!

Becoming a Petwoo member isn’t just the SMART thing to do because of all the fun you’ll have, and all the money you’ll save—it’s also the NICE thing to do!! A portion of Petwoo membership fees will always go back to our local pet community.

Microchip Your Pet is a program run by LiFeline Adoptions, Inc which seeks to microchip as many pets as

possible. LiFeline Adoptions is a small cat only rescue and adoption group that assists difficult to place or spe-cial needs cats and kittens.

During the work in LiFeline Adoptions and shelter work before that, it became clear to the co founders just how important microchipping pets is. It can make the differ-ence between pets being reunited or even living or dying should they end up in a shelter. Microchips can literally save the life of your pet should they become lost.

Microchips are a tiny little unit that is inserted into a pet between the shoulders on their upper back. It is just a quick pinch feeling to the animal and is inserted under the skin. Most chips stay in place but some migrate a bit from movement and activity of the animal. The insertion is quicker then a vaccination and more often then not the pet doesn’t even know anything was done to them.

All chips have a capacitor and an antenna and carry a unique code that is the identifying number for that chip. When a pet is lost and ends up in a shelter, an animal control officer’s van or a vet, they are typically scanned with a handheld microchip scanner that reads the chips number. The chip manufacturer is contacted and they contact the owner to inform them where their pet is. In certain situations, the shelter or vet is able to directly access the pets owner’s contact information.

One in three pets will become separated from their owner during its life. Yet, current statistics suggest that

only about 12% of dogs and 3 or 4% of cats are micro-chipped. As grim as this statistic is, the registration milieu is downright shocking. About 40% of the microchips are not registered. Many people think that once a microchip is inserted and registered, they are protected for life.

The problem is that certain shelters and humane orga-nizations use microchip vendors who offer only annual registration options, not lifetime. Or, sometimes a chip never gets registered in the first place. So someone adopt-ing a pet from a shelter might be informed that it is being registered at that time but somehow the need for re-regis-tering does not get communicated, or strongly enough. If informed, the new pet owner might still not renew each year either forgetting or just not having fully understood the dynamics.

As good of a technol-ogy as microchips are, there are still rampant ubiqui-tous problems with regard to uniform microchip registra-tion processes. For example, there is the primary directory of registrations called AAHA (Ameri-can Animal Hospital Association) which was developed to streamline microchipping registrations since different companies had different registries and the process was splintered and fragmenting.

AAHA is the registry most commonly contacted when a pet is lost and scanned. However, some of the chip ven-dors, namely 24Petwatch and Avid, continue to refrain from interlinking with AAHA. This means that a chip number can be displayed in a scanner and the owner not

Green, or common, iguanas are among the largest lizards in the

Americas, averaging around 6.5 feet (2 meters) long and weighing about 11

pounds (5 kilograms).

They are also among the most popular reptile pets in the United States, despite

being quite difficult to care for properly. In fact, most captive iguanas die within the first year, and many are either turned

loose by their owners or given to rep-tile rescue groups.

The green iguana’s extensive range comprises the rain forests of northern

Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean Islands, and southern Brazil. They spend

most of their lives in the canopy, descending only infrequently to mate, lay eggs, or change trees.

Primarily herbivores, iguanas are active during the day, feeding on leaves, flowers, and fruit. They generally live near

water and are excellent swimmers. If threatened, they will leap from a branch, often from great heights, and escape with a splash to the water below. They are also tough enough to land on solid ground from as high as 40 feet (12 meters) and survive.

Iguanas’ stout build gives them a clumsy look, but they are fast and agile on land. They have strong jaws with razor-sharp teeth and sharp tails, which make up half their body length and can be used as whips to drive off predators. They can also detach their tails if caught and will grow another without permanent damage.

located, since they are not interlinked with AAHA directory.

Another unresolved issue is with regards to the micro-chip frequency. Two of the main ones used are 125KHz and 134KHz. All shelters and vets as well as rescue orga-nizations need to check to be sure they have a universal scanner, which can read each frequency.

Between the disconnect of some companies from AAHA and the number of chips that are not registered, there is still much education and changes in methodol-ogy that are needed in order to bring about a uniform and effective microchip identification system.

Still, so many lost animals are reunited annually with their families, despite an imperfect system. All pet

owners should have their pets microchipped. The registration problem can be solved simply by using the non-profit registry by Found Animals by going to www.found.org and registering

the chip, or

even double regis-tering. Why? This directory does interlink with AAHA and it provides a perma-nent registration for the animal. It is even free to use!

Please consider chipping your loved pet or pets. We microchip any pet who comes to us at events and we even will come to you if you don’t live too far away. We microchip pets at differ-ent clinics around as well. We will do it for only $30 and even then you get back a ten dollar voucher for pet store merchandise from one of two different stores. We help you with registration if needed and we ALWAYS follow up to confirm the chips get registered. You even get a “I’m A CHIPPER Person” pin to wear for a while.

You can contact us at: www.LiFelineAdoptions.org and you can find our different events on our calendar page. We always microchip at every event.

Remember, a microchip can mean keeping your lost pet alive, and you being located should they get separated. Ninety percent of lost pets who are chipped, make it home!

P’looza: Tell us about the originsof Hansen’s Doggy Daycare & Spa?

Debbie: Hansen’s began as Hansen’s Pedigree Spa and opened in 2009. Ini-tially it was just dog grooming. In 2011, Hansen’s Doggy Daycare and Spa was founded. The business relocated from a residential home to a plaza and expand-ed into dog training, doggy daycare and grooming.

P’looza: What is Hansen’s Doggy Daycare & Spa’s main goal or mission statement? Debbie: As a business in the commu-nity, Hansen’s mission is to fulfill all your pet requirements by offering the best pet care service there is. Consistent, ethical and quality performance with our clients, their pets, and our community results in

When Petpalooza stopped by Hansen’s Doggy Daycare & Spa, a really wonderful thing happened. Not only did we have a nice chat with owner, Debbie Hansen, but we hit the proverbial jackpot when she agreed to share her expertise in upcom-ing issues, as our newest contributing writer.

loyal, long-term relationships. Hansen’s will never be less than the best.

P’looza: Tell us about your recent expansion into dog training.

Debbie: Realizing a considerable de-mand by our clients regarding needing help with behavioral concerns with their pets helped my decision of becoming a Certified Dog Trainer. With doggy day-care and training, it can significantly transform a dog into a well-trained fami-ly member. Clearly working directly with the family is a huge piece of this trans-formation.

P’looza: What’s the most challenging aspect of your work?

Debbie: The most challenging aspect of my business is not being able to reach out to many families that may be having canine behavioral problems along with canine nutrition issues. Many families that have pets don’t recognize what a good diet has to do with a dog’s well-being. Hansen’s is a resource for the community. I want families to know we are here for them and only a phone call away.

P’looza: What would you say is the most rewarding?

Debbie: The most rewarding aspect is everything. When the dogs get groomed it enhances their coats, they have a bet-ter appearance and the dog feels better. In doggy daycare, we truly get to observe them enjoy playing as dogs. In the end, playing helps the dogs’ misbehavior at home due to the stimulus. Training is the utmost rewarding. I have worked with aggressive, fearful dogs, as well as dogs with separation anxiety. Working with a dog to modify a bad behavior is amazing. It helps the dog bond with their family members along with being well-behaved in a public situation.

P’looza: In what ways can Hansen’s Doggy Daycare & Spa help owners have a better time with their pets?

Page 19: Jul aug 2014 web

Havin’ some outdoor fun!

Debbie: My motto is “Helping families bond with their pets.” Meaning by educating through obedience training, behavior modification, and helping them understand their dog brings them together. Helping Owners understand their pets by reading dog body language helps the frustra-tion level of the dog to decrease. Their dog already under-stands them. People tend of “over complicate” dogs. The most important aspects you can give your dog are, First Leadership, Second Structure, and Third Consistency.

P’looza: Any particular stories you’d like to share?

Debbie: Of course, many, but two in particular. An own-er brought a fearful pet to our daycare last year. At first she just sat in a corner and would hide. We slowly increased her time at daycare and did obedience training with the owner at the same time. She now is part of the group and

comes every week and plays. Another case was with an aggressive dog. People use the word aggression but really don’t under-stand what it means. True aggression is when a dog wants to “hurt” someone or another animal. With close modera-tion at daycare and obedience training with the owner, af-ter nine months, the dog finally submit-ted to another dog.

But don’t get me wrong. You still need to understand your pet’s behavioral threshold. You can modify a behavior, but you cannot change a dog. The owners need to be the dog’s advocate and take them out of a situation before failing.

P’looza: Tell us about your current pets.

Debbie: I have two loves of my life (along with my hus-band, Joe and my son Jeremy). One is a 13 yr. old White West Highland Terrier, Katie and a 14 yr. old Sheltie, Shell-ie. My Westie is a trip just like all terriers. She runs around like she is two with a personality that doesn’t stop. My Shel-tie is my baby. Unfortunately she struggles with Degenera-tive Joint Disorder and goes for therapy every week. We are extremely fortunate to have her this long; typically Sheltie’s only live to be 10 to 12 years of age.

P’looza: Did you have a favorite pet over the years?

Debbie: Westie’s be-cause terriers are extremely stubborn and not easy to train. I think that is maybe why, I am always up for a challenge.

P’looza: What would you most like our readers to know about Hansen’s Doggy Daycare & Spa?

Debbie: Hansen’s wants the community to know we are here as a resource for them. I work closely with fearful dogs along with separation anxiety issues. Also, we work closely with many food manufacturers and attend many trade shows to see what is available on the market. When someone walks into a pet store and has so many varieties of food and treats it is overwhelming to know what to buy. They can call us at any time and we can give them some suggestion. We study canine nutrition on a regular basis.

P’looza: Deb, it’s been a real pleasure getting to know more about you, and your business. Do you have any final thoughts you’d like to share with our readers?

Debbie: I tell a lot of my clients and friends that I probably will never become a millionaire but knowing that I am help-ing families with their pets is enough reward for me. When you take a dog and modify them to have a better life, there is nothing more rewarding than that. After working in a retail industry for 28 years, I never thought I could love going to work as much as I do now. Don’t get me wrong, it is a lot of hard work and hours, but in the long run, it pays off.

Rush Inter Pet CemeteryCrematory & Funeral Home

National Pet Memorial DayAnnual Observance - Open to the Public

Sunday, September 14, 2014 Noon - 2pmNational Pet Memorial Day, observed each year on the Second Sunday in September, was established by the International Association of Pet Cemeteries in 1972. Although there has been no legislation to make it official, it was thought that there should be a special day to remember our pets; and using the initials SSS helped make it easier for people to remember when the special day is.

Since Rush Inter Pet Cemetery opened in 1979 (35 years!!) they have held an annual observance for National Pet Memorial Day.

This is a nice day for people to come together, meet and talk about their pets. They are always happy to see families who establish friendships because of the common bond they share... the love of pets.

In the past, Rush Inter Pet have held picnics with pony rides, ostriches and dog sled demonstrations. Many times visitors have enjoyed obedience, agility and flyball demonstrations. One special milestone was celebrated with a butterfly release!

For years now, Rush has remembered our pets with a beautiful candle lighting ceremo-ny hosted by their friend, Rev. Kathy Smith. Families place candles in memory of their pets on a memoriel table. Kathy then offers a heartfelt blessing and lights the candles.

Also in the past few years, another friend, Fern Hilsinger has offered a Native Ameri-can Blessing, which is enjoyed by all with her bells, drums, feathers and singing.

Rush Inter Pet truly enjoys hosting this annual event and invites you to be a part of this year’s celebration. For more info, please call: (585) 533-1685.

You will also want a secure way for your dog to travel. A good quality crate is probably the safest solution, but if this is impractical, a doggy seat-belt and harness can work well, too. Remember to never leave your pet un-attended in your vehicle, as tempera-tures rise quickly in cars.

You should call your veterinarian sev-eral days before you leave to make sure that your pet has enough medica-tion and to get an updated copy of his records to have on hand in case of an emergency. Also, make sure that pets are welcome at your destination.

Keep in mind that not all pets like to travel. If your dog does not like riding in the car, you may want to look into a boarding facility or a local pet-sitter instead.

Safe and Happy Travels !

Dear Dr. Dori,

Our family is going on vacation and we’d love to take our dog. What advice can you give us before we take a long car-ride with him?

Taking your family pet on vacation can be a lot of fun, but it’s good

to think ahead and be prepared before making a long trip. For a road trip this summer, it will be important for you to make sure to carry lots of water for your pet and extra food as well just in case. I would recommend planning to stop every 2 hours for breaks to stretch, potty and drink.

It will be very important to have a good leash and collar with clear iden-tification. If your pet has a microchip, this would be a good time to make sure that you have registered it with up-to-date contact information.

Reconfiguring space that was once adoptable cat housing, the Lobby and Reception areas are now an efficient and welcoming starting pointfor visitors and adopters. The centralized reception desk accommodates all visitor needs and the Adoption Counseling area has been expanded to include six desks to make our adoption process more efficient.

With the dedication of the Halle Polisseni Dog Adoption Center, Lollypop Farm reconfigured exist-ing space to increase available meet-and-greet rooms and improve the adoption experience for dog adopters. There are now three available rooms for potential adopters to spend quality time with dogs in need of homes. The reconfiguration also added doors to create a sound and safety barrier from other parts of the shelter, improving the quality of the experience for other animals and visitors alike.

In what was the old veterinary clinic, there is now a dedicated space for cleaning cages and other large shelter equipment. The Getinge GEW Cage and Rack Washer will modernize the cage washing process and greatly impact the efficiency of the shelter. We were also able to reclaim space to serve as a dedicated Grooming Room to present our animals at their finest to potential adopters.

Many visitors don’t realize that in addition to the cats in the adoption areas, many more are being housed for days or weeks before being made available for adoption. Some may have been turned in as strays, some may have medical or behavioral issues that need to be addressed, and some may yet be too young to be made available for adoption. The Cat Holding space is now a quiet and central-ized area that reduces stress for these cats. It is segregated from the noisy dog areas and every cat now has his own window in their condo for a view of the outdoors.

The Klingenstein Veterinary Clinic is a life-saving, state-of-the-art hospital. Veterinarians and a close-knit team of veterinary staff conduct health exams on every incoming animal, perform spay/neuter and other surgeries, and provide essential treatments for shelter pets in our care. The 4,786 sq. ft. expansion includes a clinic with functionally separated exam space, pre-op, surgical, and recovery areas. With an increased need for affordable spay/neuter and other veterinary services in the com-munity, the large clinic now includes five surgical tables in anticipation of the expected growth of services in this area. A new Veterinary Services entrance and dedicates clinic holding areas for dogs and cats allows us to serve other pets in the community through collaborations with local rescue groups, low-income spay/neuter services for owned pets, and feral cat spay/neuter surgeries.

Our Incoming Animals entrance has been redesigned to minimize animal stress and reduce disease transmission. The space was expanded to include a waiting room and a separate counseling room for staff to help those surrendering their pets.

The two-level Terrence B. McIntee Training and Education Center enables Lollypop Farm to offer more robust behavior and training programs for the community, as well as providing expanded humane education classes and community programs. The first level of the new 7,415 sq. ft. building wing is an expansive auditorium that is host to dog training classes, regional seminars, and humane education classes. Board rooms and much-needed office space can be found on the second level of this addition.

The Day Lily Cat Adoption Center is a new 3,500 sq. ft. feline-focused space that includes colony hous-ing, condos, and porches— all dedicated to cats and their unique housing needs.Improvements were designed to reduce stress, thereby reducing medical needs while the cats are in our care. Vertical climbers, walkways, cubbies, porches, and windows create an engaging environment for the cats during their stay at Lollypop Farm. The new housing allows direct interaction with the unique personalities of adoptable cats in colony housing that includes couches and benches for potential adopters. The very best feature is a new screened-in outdoor porch accessible via a cat door for the cats and a people-sized door for our visitors!

The Small Animal Adoption Center was carved from the lobby to showcase adoptable small and furry friends like rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, mice, and more! This space features elevated rabbit housing, as well as other condos that can be converted to accommodate a variety of housing needs as determined by the animals available for adoption. Where the shelter once lacked an area for visitors to meet adoptable small animals, the new center creates an inviting and centralized space to entice potential adopters to bring home our little friends!

Q. How oftenshould I give my bird a bath?

A. What? Give my bird a bath? Yea right..your kidding right? Honestly you should saturate your bird at least once a week, twice is better. Now I’m not talking about a light

spritz that puts a little dew on it, I’m talking soaked to the skin. This stimulates normal preening, removes dander, and makes the feathers look like they’re supposed to. Birds that chew or pluck their feathers should also get baths and this may help correct the feather mutilation problem as well. If the house tem-perature is comfortable for you, yes even in the win-ter, it should be fine to wet your bird. You can blow dry it but do so from a distance so you won’t burn or

overheat the bird. Most birds dry amazingly fast on their own.

For food or makeup stains you can use a product called Cockatoo Shampoo or a mild soap like Ivory or Johnson’s Baby Shampoo. Wet the bird, work the soap in, and rinse thoroughly, most stains should come out. For oil or grease on a bird use only Dawn detergent and rinse thoroughly. This is what oil spill birds get treated with.

Some people will comment that “ my bird doesn’t like a bath”... what I tell them is if you had a child and it didn’t want to take a bath you’d still get the kid in the tub once in a while to get the crud off them, they’ll smell better too. Give your bird a bath, it’ll thank you for it.
