Letter from the Minister

Dear Friends,

Summer is here – and it is such a relief to havesome sunshine to make us all smile! We have hadto suffer far too long with overcast skies and clouds – although I amtold we are already in a drought!

All sorts of things cause droughts – a lack of rain, a lack of food, a lackof faith - a deficiency of anything can be called a drought.

I am often told by people that they lack faith, but what is faith?

Faith is belief with strong conviction; firm belief in something for whichthere may be no tangible proof; complete trust in or devotion to. Faithis the opposite of doubt.

Faith is possibly the single-most important element of the Christian life.Hebrews 11:6 states, "And without faith it is impossible to please God,because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and thathe rewards those who earnestly seek him.”

The Bible gives this description of faith in Hebrews 11:1: "Now faith isbeing sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."

Faith is hard for many, and simple for some; faith requires us to believein the evidence we have, and in what we can no longer see or touch orfeel.

Doubting or questioning helps us to firm our faith, to define what ourfaith is.

Faith – it takes a leap of faith to have faith!

My prayer is that we don’t stay in drought, but find the plenty that Godgives.

Stewardship

Recently, we received a communication from the URC reminding usthat Stewardship is not only about money, important though that is:it suggests that Stewardship is the response to God’s giving inJesus Christ. It is about giving, about giving ourselves, without reserve,to achieve God’s purposes of love and, in acknowledging that all wehave first comes from God, offering answers to the question of howwe respond and use the gifts He has given us.

The suggestions go like this (slightly abridged):v Worship: God gives all of life completely out of love: our

response is to worship God and grow in prayer and spiritualityand develop our discernment of where God is and what He iscalling us to do.

v Peace: God gives peace such as the world cannot give: ourresponse is to be active peacemakers, building relationshipsacross the church and across the world.

v Gospel: God gives the greatest gift of all – Jesus; our responseis to receive this gift for ourselves and to share it with others.

v Creation: God gives us the world; our response is to care for itand use it responsibly, safeguarding, sustaining and renewingthe life of the Earth.

v Justice: God gives everything to everyone, for God loveseveryone equally: our response is to share what God has givenand treat everyone with respect.

v Body: God gives us intricate and wonderful bodies of suchvariety: our response is to treat ourselves and others with respectand love as an integral part of God’s creation.

v Property: God gives creative abilities and resources to buildprivate and public property; our response is to care forproperty handed on to us in trust and to put it to creative usein our generation, for example by making our buildings activein the life of local neighbourhoods.

v People: God gives people to each other, created in his image;our response is to welcome others equally and help each otherbecome the people God intends us to be.

"Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of allevolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are stillsavages."

Christian Aid Walk 2013Sunday 19th May saw Mike and I heading forHayes station to do our duty as stewards forthe Christian Aid Walk “Circling the City”. Wewere at St. Botolph’s without Bishopsgatechurch, where we have been before, andJeff the caretaker made us very welcomeonce again. For almost 900 years a parishchurch has stood on this site, and manythousands have worshipped here from thereign of Edward I. St. Botolph’s is a city churchand seeks to minister to those who work in, orvisit, the city. The church is there tosupplement, not replace, the ministry peoplereceive in their home parish church.St Botolph’s without Bishopsgate survived theGreat Fire of London unscathed, and only lostone window in the Second World War, but on24 April 1993 was one of the many buildings to

be damaged by a bomb planted by the IRA which damaged alarge area of the City.

Perhaps you are wondering who St. Botolph was. He was one of theearliest and most revered of East Anglian saints and became knownas the patron saint of wayfarers. After his death his relics were-brought to London through various towns and eventually through thefour City gates, Aldersgate, Bishopsgate, Aldgate and Billingsgate. The Churches at the entrance to these gates were named after him.The first three remain, but the one at Billingsgate was destroyed in theGreat Fire and never rebuilt. It seems that as his relics were conveyedfrom place to place, his name became associated with wayfarersand travellers. Around 70 Churches are named after him.

We enjoyed our day verymuch and hope to do itagain next year.

Mike & Barbara.

The Fairtrade Sunday StallWe hold a fair trade stall after the morning service on the 2nd and 4th

Sunday of each month. In July the stall will be held on the 28th. (as the service on the 14th isaway from the church, there will not be a stall). In August the stall willbe held on the 11th and 25th

If there are any lines you would like the stall to carry, please say. :-)Please continue to support your fair trade stall. Thank you.

Richard and Barbara.Footnote

You may have read about the disastrous loss of bees in the UK, and theanticipated increase of the price of honey. We are checking whetherthe price of Fairtrade honey, which is imported, will be unaffected. IfFairtrade honey prices will remain the same, we plan to orderadditional honey in September to meet the anticipated demand.

So, do check at the stall or with one of us about the situation.

June 5th 2013

Dear EditorI write to express my concern about the extremely radical

proposals included in the June edition of ‘Catalyst’. There’s the

experiment to hold the evening service of June 23rd at 10.30 in

the morning which is a bit drastic .... . I suggest that the faithful

dozen or so regular evening service attendees .... should be

briefed .... . The effect on the regular morning congregation is

quite problematic; the majority of whom have never been to an

evening service .... And as for poor Pastor Roy Powell, scheduled

to take a service at 6.30 pm that same day, I can envisage him

ending up with just the organist for company....

I’m sure we are all concerned about H.F.C.’s on-going budget

deficit, and maybe were hoping that a good result from the

annual Prayer and Gift Day would help alleviate the situation.

‘Pray then give cheerfully’ might well be an appropriate maxim

for the day. But - wait! I see from page six that this year a subtle

.... change has been introduced - June 15th’s event is to be

called a ‘Payer and Gift Day’. .... It’s a shame about the missing

prayer part, though - perhaps we can leave that to the throng

who regularly attend the Tuesday prayer meetings?

One last small gripe: I see the gift envelopes make mention of

being able to reclaim tax from all our spending on gin. Well, I’m

sorry, but I’m sure I’m not alone in never touching the stuff, so I

shan’t be contributing anything from that source.

By the time this letter appears in print the relevant events will

have already taken place. I just hope the potential disasters I

envisage prove to be less serious than I fear they could be. ......

Yours regretfully,

Perplexed of Pickhurst Lane.

Thank you for this. Some mistakes can slip past the proofreading teams. Will the mistakes make the list of journalslip-ups (many of which are glaring) in wide circulation?

Letters PageThe idea of having a letters page in Catalyst has been around for awhile. It would be nice. The “Catalyst Needs You” page could be used, but its preferable to keep that page for creative and artistic submissions.

The following letter, which has been heavily edited, has been recentlyreceived, and has proved to be the Catalyst for launching a LettersPage. The letters page will be used when there is material.

Two reasons for this are Apple's integration of helpful technologies (e.g.VoiceOver screen reader and Zoom magnification) into its operatingsystem, and a growing number of applications designed for low-visionusers.

God, bless to me this day,God bless to me this night;Bless, O bless, Thou God of grace,Each day and hour of my life; Bless, O bless, Thou God of grace, Each day and hour of my life.

God, bless the pathway on which I go;God, bless the earth that is beneath my sole;Bless, O God, and give to me Thy love,O God of gods, bless my rest and my repose; Bless, O God, and give to me Thy love, And bless, O God of gods, my repose.

Words of Wisdom - anywayMother Teresa

People are often unreasonable, irrational and self-centred:forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives:be kind anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight:create anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous:be happy anyway.

The good you do today will often be forgotten:do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it may never be enough:give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God:it was never between you and them anyway.
